Many times you can just consider the final issue made by the creator you like to be the final issue. If you only want to read Superman stories written by Jerry Seigel, you can. There are cases like Marvel not letting Jack Kirby do his intended version of his Ragnarok story in Thor, and then DC not letting him do the actual ending of his Fourth World saga either (and Fourth World was just him trying to do Thor again but with more control), but then there are good Thor and Fourth World stories even after Kirby got completely fucked over, so there is still stuff to enjoy. Most stories until the '70s were relatively standalone, and most of the time, when a creator left to get replaced by another, said creator would wrap up his story as he left. Yeah, Steve Ditko got fucked by Marvel and quit without revealing a cliffhanger ending mystery, making it so John Romita Sr. had to just guess who the Green Goblin's secret identity was (Ditko would decades later confirm Romita guessed correctly), but Romita's run was great too, and he didn't get fucked over and did get to do an ending. And so did the people after him for the next several decades. Sure, it's shit now, and I have little hope it will ever get better, but I just consider the ending to be the end of the last run that I actually liked, and that works fine. So far I've only read up to Amazing Spider-Man 200. It's Peter's graduation from college. It's a good ending. If I never read any more, it would be fine. And later stuff is a new creator anyway, so fuck it. But maybe I'll read it eventually, and I've heard it's good, so there's no need to deprive myself from it.

That's precisely what happens. However, there are sequels. But you don't have to like Arkham Knight to say Arkham Asylum was good. You don't have to like Action Comics #1050 to say Action Comics #1 was good. Action Comics #1 was a standalone story (or rather a collection of standalone stories, because it was an anthology series), and Action Comics #2 featured a sequel (or rather, a collection of sequels and some original stories).
