Takes place in a planetary system of eight planets, each one with four moons, all revolving around the same sun, with two planets in each orbit on the opposite sides of the sun from one another at all times.
It is very obviously an artificial solar system, intentionally created by some unknown maker for some unknown purpose, perhaps an art project due to the emphasis on symmetry and coordination.
The moons are always at opposite ends of their planet from one another, they all make one revolution around their planets as their planet makes one revolution around the sun, when the planets are furthest from the sun one of their moons are positioned directly between them and the sun while their opposite moon is exactly on the other side, and these two moons switch places between each of these two occasions. The same thing also happens with their other pair of moons when their planets are at their closest to the sun. When the planet is halfway between the points in their orbits that take them furthest from the sun and those which take them closest to it, none of their moons are between them and the sun, but the four moons are instead at a 45 degree angle off from this position, exactly half way between their next alignment.
Each of these planets has six square shaped continents contacting their four neighbors by their points, forming a checkerboard pattern between the water and land. Each continent is like a pyramid shaped protrusion, with it's highest point of elevation in it's center, and lowest points at their edges. Each sea is like a pyramid shaped depression, with it's lowest point in it's center, and highest points at their edges.
At the two times when the sun is closest to the planet, it is directly lined up with the center of one of it's continents or with the center of the continent on the other side of the planet, and at the two times when the sun is furthest from the planet, the sun is directly lined up with the center of one of the other two continents, or the one on the opposite side. At the times between these four events, the sun is directly lined up with the center of one of it's four oceans. This does indeed mean that the center of the continents at the north and south of these planets also serve as the axis upon which they rotate.
The two continents that face towards or away from the sun when it is closest to the planet are the lands of summer and winter, the other two, which face toward or away from the sun when it is furthest from the planet are the lands of spring and fall, the lands to north and south are simply the lands of the north or south poles.
The orbits of each pair of planets in the system are lined up such that when the closest two planets to the sun are at the point in their orbits that takes them the furthest away from the sun the pair of planets which are furthest from the sun are at the point in their orbits which takes them the closest to the sun, and vice versa.
The two pairs of planets between them share the points in their orbits with the planet that their orbit rings are not next to, the planets which are second from the sun are at the point in their orbits taking them closest to the sun when the planets furthest from the sun are at the same point in their orbits, and the third planets from the sun are at the point in their orbits taking them the furthest away from the sun when the planets closest to the sun are at the same point in their orbits.
Thus at each time when a pair of planets are at the closest point in their orbit to the sun so too is another pair of non-neighboring planets, they are synchronized to be the same, and this occurs while the other two pairs of planets in the system are experiencing the furthest points in their orbit from the sun, perfectly synchronized as well, to be opposite.
Each of these planets are inhabited by a different humanoid species:
The closest planets to the sun are inhabited by humanoids of the smallest possible size, these planets are hot with heavy gravity.
The furthest planets from the sun are inhabited by humanoids of the largest possible size, these planets are cold with light gravity.
The planets in between these have those humanoids from the planet closer to the sun (second closest) being short and stout, while the humanoids from the planet further from the sun (second furthest) being tall and slender.
Each of the eight planets has their own assortment of native life which had evolved upon their planets, giving rise to their dominant species of sapient humanoids, their histories, wars, and civilizations, developing their own technologies and eventually making contact with one another, then traveling between their worlds through the space between and cross-pollinating each other in many ways, which led to more wars and more times of peace at the end of those wars.
The whole of the solar system was clearly intended to be beautiful and elegantly designed, but none of the beings who had come to exist on these planets ever discovered who had made it all, however, they all do have a feeling that it was all made for them.
