So this is where some of you are camping out, huh? This is gonna take some getting used to, but I'm glad the people here were able to find each other. I've been watching the situation closely since the hack occurred and I prepared a little writeup to inform the thread of what happened whenever of if-ever the site came back up. Here it is:
>What happened?
A user from Soyjack Party, a 4chan alternative built to house the refugees of the now defunct /qa/ board, hacked into 4chan's server and obtained root access. He had full access to the site's database and CLI. The following information was released to the public:
>Usernames, email addresses, IP addresses, and hashed passwords for every 4chan staff member
>A full archive of the staff-exclusive /j/ board
>An archive of an old private staff IRC channel that has been out of use for over a decade (the staff use Discord now)
>The full source code for the Yotsuba image board format
>Browser screenshots of the site's admin panels showing what the guts of 4chan look like and providing a few stats about the site
Shoutout to the guy who was spamming the feedback form with request for IDs and flags on /vt/ right before the site went down

The hacker said that he is not going to be releasing or selling information on 4chan pass users. "This is an endeavor of fun."
>How did this happen?
Hiroshimoot has not updated the website's servers. Ever. The version of FreeBSD that 4chan is currently using was released in 2014. Moot left site in 2015. This version's End-of-Life date was in 2016. The hacker found the origin IP for the server and used a publicly known hack for the horribly outdated software.

>What will happen next?
We don't know. From the looks of things, the site was very poorly maintained, which does not speak well for any backups or disaster recovery plans they may have, if any. 4chan could be down for days, weeks, or forever. All we can do it wait
