I always assumed each dozen or so of these games take place in their own Prime Dimensions (helps iron out the inconsistencies). Example: -Classic dimension (obvious which games) -MS/GG dimension (likewise) -Arcade Dimension (Trackball/Sonic Fighters/Jam/R/Shuffle (8 Chaos Emeralds is the first clue)) -Adventure/Advanced dimension (Rush, Battle and Chronicles also count) -Sonic '06 (the fork-in-the-road ret-con of the Adventure universe, which morphs into the Nu dimension (like New 52, only less hated)). -Nu Dimension (Unleashed and onwards). … I'd like to think Forces took place in it's own dimension because of a concerning lack of humans compared to the previous games. I'm not counting games like Spinball and Mean Bean Machine because they're already based on an established separate continuity. I'm not sure if TSR even is cannon. In my opinion, the Sega All-Stars franchise and Olympic Games fall under the same spectrum as games like Tekken Tag Tournament (Fantasy Battles taking place in their own little walled-up world just for the hell of it).

>>21122 I still think it's both stupid, and inconsistent. It wasn't even clued in until some SEGA executive tweeted about it or something. I say it's about as believable/canon as Penders tweeting about wanting that Skunk to be Sally's first time. Honestly, it feels more like an excuse so they don't have to care where a Sonic Game takes place (especially a plot-hole-ridden mess like Forces). A concept about One Planet where a minority of Animal People are segregated for whatever racist reason is already good enough. But hey, Archie already somehow did it with their post-war societal recovery undertones in the comics. Any questions?
I like to pretend Forces isn't canon because the story was so awful and the characterization was abysmal on plenty of characters.

As broken as '06 was, it was at the very least not planned to be a rush job (kind of like Driv3r). Forces is just an insult to what SEGA really thinks we expect of them. The biggest hole (in my opinion) was that Sonic spent 6 months imprisoned on that Egg, and both him and his brain are literally still in one piece. You'd think the Doc would take this chance to earn some pleasure (especially if he knows what waterboarding is). It's one of the most pointless time-jumps in any piece of media I've ever came across. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Speaking of losing minds, why are they forgetting that it's not all about Sonic? (reminds me of this classic short)

The japanese version I heard makes a few alterations like no "TBs of selfies" joke or Silver's odd line about "optimist but also a realist" being worded better.

Do I really need to explain how Sonic Adventure is the finale of the Chaos arc, slowly built up since Sonic 1? The Chaos Emeralds aren't even in SegaSonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Jam (I assume you mean the Sonic World portion), or Sonic Shuffle, and there are only 7 in Sonic R. They just fucked up in Fighters because there were 8 characters and they didn't give a shit. It's easy enough to say Knuckles had the Master Emerald anyway. Sonic the Fighters features Fang, from Sonic & Tails 2 (Triple Trouble), a Game Gear game. Are they a different dimension? So Fang in Fighters was actually a completely new guy, and not intended to be the one from Triple Trouble? This is fucking stupid. It's all one continuity. Except Spinball and Mean Bean Machine are the SatAM/Adventures continuity. Because oh yeah, those shows are the same continuity since they cross over in the last episode.

The shows couldn't be further apart in style and tone. The continuity is going to be a mess no matter what. You can't make Sonic Fighters and SatAM/Archie and Adventures and all the games canon with each other because it's never going to work. There needs to be some picking and choosing of the best elements. This worked for the Star Wars community for a long time. You pick which novels work best and ditch the shitty comics that conflict and get bogged-down with dumb ideas that go nowhere. Same thing applies here: keep the 2D games and some ideas from Adventure 1 and 2 and the rest can be selectively sidelined.

Of course not. SatAM/Adventures is its own continuity. Archie is its own continuity which is heavily based on SatAM/Adventures but not actually the same thing. The games are and always have been their own thing, with only Spinball and Mean Bean Machine ever even referencing any other continuity. Except for Amy and Charmy being in the games despite originally being from a manga. No, Star Wars had canon-tiers, where what was canon depended on what medium it was. Movies were top canon, followed by novels, followed by games and stuff. Then Clone Wars came out and was above the novels. I forget where shows like Ewoks and Droids went. I mean really they should be above the novels with Clone Wars, but since they're less serious, I bet they weren't. Anyway, things of lower tiers could be said to count, unless they contradicted things of higher tiers, then those details didn't count. When making higher tiers, creators, especially Lucas making the movies, didn't give a fuck about lower tiers. Sonic could be said to be similar, in that the people making the games obviously don't give a flying fuck about any adaptations, except for the ones mentioned above, and even then, it's not like they just treated those things as canon. But no, seriously, Sonic games have a very tight continuity, except Spinball and Mean Bean Machine. Fighters is honestly the biggest problem, because of the 8 emeralds. But again, that's really not the biggest deal, and it's easy to say one is the Master Emerald. Aside from that, the biggest problems are things like map screens showing recurring locations as being in different places, which still most people wouldn't notice, except for maybe the most egregious example of Forces showing Green Hill as being on the mainland instead of South Island. But even then, only big nerds who actually know Sonic lore would know what South Island is, since it's never talked about outside the manuals for Sonic 1 and a few Game Gear games, and isn't even important to the lore compared to Westside Island and Angel Island. And Westside Island never has its name spoken outside the manual for Sonic 2 anyway. Of course, the games starting with Unleashed, and especially Colors, go out of their way to not have very complex stories. But they do still make references to past entries, and since they don't have very complex stories, it's not like they really contradict earlier ones.
