/sthg/ - Sonic The Hedgehog General Anonymous 09/05/2018 (Wed) 17:20:33 No. 4538
Welcome to the Sonic The Hedgehog General. >>4540 Everyday we get faster & faster. Also, since SAGE is over (or almost over), I figure I could give some suggestions on what I'd recommend: Petit Hedgehog, Sonic Chaos & Sonic Islands. There's a few I wanna get into, but those 3 games have been some major highlights of the fangame community this year, for me. Petit & Chaos are both the most excited I've been for a 2D fangame in years, especially Chaos which feels, looks & plays so much like Sonic Mania I'm surprised it's not a mod of the game itself. Petit is fun stuff too & it has a really unique artstyle which I always appreciate from fan-works. It's also a lot of fun to play Sonic, Shadow & Amy. Islands though, steals SAGE for me. In terms of controls, physics, moveset & mechanics (like having Sonic being able to boost at top speed), it's pretty much my dream 3D Sonic title in those areas. That being said, it's not perfect. The gimmick of "collecting Chaos Emeralds unlocks certain essential moves" can be a bit annoying. But there's so much potential in the game & I really hope it sees a full release someday.
>>4542 >Everyday we get faster & faster. Seems like it, I hope it doesn't stop. Kinda worried that it might. On the SAGE topic, aren't you afraid of executing stuff made by random fans on your PC? It's one of the things that sometimes stops me from trying some of the games. Isn't there some precedent of people putting bad code into their games previously?
>>4543 There can be instances of this, but SAGE is pretty safe with what fangames they showcase. I think the worst instance of any fangame was Gather Battle, which seems to (hopefully) be something that won't happen again.
>>4543 I think it might slow down as well, but we’ll see.
(55.32 KB 600x631 DmNiJo6UwAASQJp.jpg)

>>4542 What's the best SAGE game you've played, from any year?
>>4547 From any year? I'd also recommend Sonic Utopia & Sonic Before/After the Sequel.
>>4542 I assume Islands holds back abilities through collecting Emeralds so you can gradually work your movement options up through basic to more advanced. It's really good though, super excited to see what comes from that.
>>4550 Need some more suit Sonic, he looks so dapper
>>4551 He can pull it off well.
>>4552 Damn straight. So /sthg/, what's your favorite Classic, Adventure & Modern-era game? Stuff like handhelds & spinoffs can count.
>>4553 CD Adventure 1 Generations
(143.57 KB 400x400 rings.jpg)

>>4553 S3&K SA 1 Generations. Pretty standard choices except maybe for the middle one. Looking forward to seeing which one of both games people prefer.
(623.19 KB 550x650 fe0.png)

>>4553 Mania SA2 Generations
Is there anything that SEGA could do to make you stop loving Sonic?
>>4559 If they axed my favorite character I might lose interest, but I don't think I'd ever stop loving the franchise.
>>4561 Who is your favorite?
(184.43 KB 318x602 scream (2).png)

>>4561 They are not going to axe anyone, but they will give you bullshit excuses for him not showing up while keeping the door open for a possible appearance and then ruin his character eventually.
>>4553 S3 & K Sa1 or '06 Generations I'm serious about all of them
(262.79 KB 480x361 1509348182115.gif)

>>4564 Shadow >>4565 Don't do this to me, anon
>>4559 if they axed Modern Sonic or 3D gameplay. I know Nakamura said 3D Sonic isn't going anywhere but who knows what that means. They might consider Modern Sonic to be "3D Sonic" or 2.5D to be 3D or something else. I love the Classic Sonic games and Sonic Advance and Rush but if that's all this franchise will become, then I'll lose interest. Also if they don't quit it with the nostalgia pandering, I'll stop caring. I don't want Green Hill Zone and Chemical Plant anymore. Same with pointless Adventure 1/2 callbacks that don't go anywhere like Chaos in Forces. If they want to include them as bonuses like Green Hill in SA2, that's fine but for the most part I want something new. I'll always love this franchise and I don't think I'll ever hate it, but I could see it becoming like Mario or Pokemon for me where I don't pay attention to it except for a month before the next big mainline game comes out.
What if the next sonic game is a forces spin off where you play as your avatar
>>4569 Accedently clicked send. And have your own solo adventure w/ small cameos of actual characters
(572.22 KB 1200x900 1484011752479.png)

>>4566 >06
>>4569 I hate to be negative and a doomsayer (it ain't very original these days is it?) but I fully expect them to go even deeper down the rabbit hole they've been going. Their vision for the modern side of the franchise is pretty clear at this point. I don't necessarily think they'll go the route you describe but I don't think the alternative they'll take is going to be great. >>4570 I admit I get kind of paranoid of accidentally doing that now that I don't have to do a captcha to post.
>>4567 They'll never axe Shadow.
(8.71 KB 480x360 RCcJnffie48.jpg)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCcJnffie48 >>4568 >I could see it becoming like Mario or Pokemon for me I don't think Sega Iizuka would mind that. But basically this: >I'll always love this franchise I can certainly lose interested and I probably count as having lost most of it already, but I still love some parts of the franchise and even if they move away from those parts even more, I will still love them. Speaking of Chemical Plant, they other day its stupid tune got into my head again and I couldn't stop whistling it all morning. Dumb tune is catchy as all hell.
>>4577 I know, but I'm still afraid. You never know what SEGA's going to do next, there could be another reboot.
>>4580 I suppose they could axe his backstory, but they would never get rid of him completely.
I have like 4 threads opened what the fuck is going on here
>>4584 Discussion, I would guess.
>>4582 That's what I'm worried about. They'd make him like his Boom version, an asshole who fights with Sonic for no reason whatsoever. I don't like that. >>4584 What do you mean?
>>4586 >What do you mean? fast
>>4577 I could see them removing him from the mainline games and relegating him to spin offs, side series, and merchandise. They sort of did that after 06 until Forces. After 06 he was only an important character in Rivals. Then after that he was a side character in Riders, the Olympic games, Runners, etc. and a boss fight in Generations and I think Rise of Lyric. I doubt they'll ever totally axe him but not being an important character in the main games is almost the same as dead

>>4659 >tfw want Sonic Universe instead of a Classic book >but that means that I will never see Honey ever again
>>4538 That's the most fastest thing I saw today. *SNAPS* Into my sonic fan game collection.
>>4666 Given how well IDW's been selling, I kinda hope we get both, tbh. Or at least do a yearly quarterly comic based in the Classic universe, like a yearly Mega Drive.
If they made a Classic Sonic comic, would the characters even be allowed to speak? Classic Sonic didn't talk in Generations but Classic Tails did and then no one spoke in Mania Adventures.
>>4669 They were allowed in the Classic issues of Archie & according to Ian, the mandates haven't really changed much with IDW, beyond the segregation of characters. So they could probably talk.
>>4668 That'd be great.
I NEED Classic characters with their Modern versions in IDW!
Sonic is slow.
>>4674 Go to bed Shadow
Considering the sales current IDW issues and late Archie issues, do you think the difference of ~50% more sales in favor of IDW is justified, that is, that the comic is that much better? >>4666 Do we know if they consider her Classic?
>>4676 IDW apparently has higher sales than Archie ever did, period. I wouldn't say it's because Sonic is more popular, but maybe because there's a bigger dry spot with the games not giving much story and all of that, and this style is closer to the SegaSonic! style.
>>4676 I think the increased sales are mostly due to the fact people actually know the comic exists now. It was plugged on the Twitter a couple times. Some gaming journalists talked about it, Tangle, Rough&Tumble, etc. With the Archie comic, no one ever talked about it except for Mega Drive.
>>4676 It makes sense to me for now. It's still brand new, marketed and pushed decently by SEGA, starts from #1 instead of trying to carry over the large number, and is more games focused bringing in fans who were put off by the previous series while I think most older series fans are still reading for now too. I'm curious to see if it sustains it's sales. Right now it's riding the high of being new, but we'll see if it has the longevity.
(12.37 KB 791x399 julysales1.png)

>>4679 Doin' fine so far. Let's hope this keeps up.
(67.65 KB 195x157 amy_look_down.png)

So, why do we have an 8chan board again? This seems identical to the /vg/ thread.
>>4681 It's both a backup and an alternative place to post. Also, technically /fast/ existed for the 4chan exodus a few years back, but it didn't really work out back then.
>>4680 Yup, holding decently steady.
I like Manic the Hedgehog.
>>4681 >This seems identical to the /vg/ thread. Except people don't argue every single day here and actually discuss what they enjoy about Sonic instead of complaining about it.
There's an active moderator on here that can delete unsavory posts, right? >>4686
>>4687 I think I can delete my own post if you want me to
>>4687 There's a BO that's seemingly keeping their eyes on what's going on here. Don't know who they are, but they seem to be a bit of an /sthg/ oldfag so they probably know a lot about both here & the /vg/ thread. >>4676 Supposedly, there was some stuff for Archie Sonic that wasn't accounted for when it came to sales, but IDW has been doing incredibly well so far. I think a lot of it has to do with factors like it having proper advertisement (not that I blame SEGA for not being on the best of terms with Archie after Ken's lawsuit, but some promotion after the mid-2000s would've been nice), starting fresh with a new #1 & it being closer to the games makes it easier to access for newer fans. I can't tell you how many times I saw people interested in Archie talk about how they had no idea where to start given the long-ass list of STH issues, as well as the countless side comics over the years. And of course, older comic fans are probably still keeping their eye on it. We'll see how things keep up, though. >>4688 I think anon may have just been asking in case some shitposters try to stir up trouble here. Not related to your specific post.

>>4711 What are you trying to imply?
(75.41 KB 800x600 DJz-01oU8AArBjS.jpg)

>>4714 Nothing insidious, I swear! Just that as time goes on and more people come, we'll probably have some arguments and shitposting.
>>4718 As usual with all forums and communities in general. Every time it gets bigger, I mean EVERY TIME, the quality of discussion lowers and more stuffy, retarded little cretins come through and want to start arguments out the ass. The only way this can be prevented is thoroughly vetting everyone who passes through or at the very least putting down STRICT moderation.
>>4706 I think Archie/Mania kinda has the right idea. He's capable of being a powerhouse but at the same time he's different from the likes of knuckles & even Bunnie because he's a pacifist who doesn't wanna fight unless he's pushed. Pretty cool idea that I'd like the see the games tackle in a character & who better than Mighty? It also makes for some nice interaction between hotheaded characters like Knuckles. >>4708 >>4705 Night anons, sleep well.
>>4719 It's unfortunate, but yeah bigger communities usually head that way. Especially on imageboards like these. I do hope if we grow (hopefully), we can get a good set of moderators.

You guys know any thing about the website kaifuu.com from what I've found is that it was ran by a person who went by Raphaela (real name is Rachael Avery) Shes most likely responsible for most of the early archie scans and her "studio" is called Turtlewing Productions Links: http://kaifuu.com https://tinyurl(.)com/y8yhjzhr https://tinyurl(.)com/yapylrl2
(40.06 KB 640x330 186nk4.jpg)

>>4723 First time I'm hearing of this site. Sounds pretty interesting though, so I'll probably give it a look in the morning. Thanks for the share, anon.
>>4720 >>4713 Yeah, I like how Ian wrote him in the Archie comics as well. I always thought Ian had a tendency to write characters with interesting concepts but miss the mark with some of them, or not go experimental enough with their characterization. Still, time constrains and all of that. But you know, that's just my criticism in general of him, he tends to be someone who plays it on the safe side and doesn't stray much from conventional story telling and plot devices & characterizations. Personally, I love the concept he gave to Mighty. That Mighty is a pacifist because he has a dangerous temper and superhuman strength. I want to take that concept and get more fearless with it. What if Mighty is like that because his rage was out of his control at a point, he was in some kind of war or conflict with an opposing side, and had to do a lot of things he regrets in the future? What if he still very high irritability and can be triggered into berserk mode but not only defending friends, but also to himself if pushed VERY enough? It sounds like too much but I just really like discussing these characters. I miss doing that.
>>4725 >I just really like discussing these characters. I miss doing that. Oh, don't get me wrong I know how you feel. It's always fun whenever I'm able to actually discuss concepts & ideas for characters or hell, just flat out discussing the character we already have in the games & how we feel about them.
>>4681 Look at this thread and then at /sthg/ on /vg/ at this moment and tell me then look remotely similar. No one here is talking about buttplugs or how passive agressiveness makes you gay.
Vector is one cool croc
>>4732 Looks pretty trustworthy.
>>4542 Sonic Islands was ok, but had some shitty controls, and the fact that your camera gets jerked to nearby enemies when you unlock homing attack was BS. And when you say Sonic Chaos, are you talking about Sonic Battle of Chaos, that MUGEN clone? Cause that was complete shite. I haven't played Petite Hedgehog yet though. What's it like/about.

Goodnight, /sthg/. Stay /fast/.
(19.06 KB 480x360 K5_DjXukEsM.jpg)

Good morning all. >>4719 >or at the very least putting down STRICT moderation. That would be a shame, because it runs the risk of going full NO FUN ALLOWED and that would ruin things, it's just much more fun to have a more relaxed kind of community where people respect the community itself naturally rather than at gunpoint (kind of like it is right now) I got to the same conclusion a couple of years ago on /sthg/, though, hence why I came here, but I hope everyone understands the concept and that in order to make things different and not end up being the same, not all people and not all kinds of content can be allowed. I get very uneasy saying that because it sounds very much like censoring and like something opposite to the imageboard spirit, but I have no idea how else to keep things from going to shit. Having said all this, dealing with the most obvious of shitposters sounds relatively easy, but beyond that somehow dealing with low qualuty posters appropiately sounds much harder and difficult to properly accomplish. >>4721 Well, fortunately we can now have more options regarding moderation but I have no idea how we'd pick more mods given how we're all anons. Fortunately it's not needed at this point and I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get there, but I do ask myself that question sometimes. >>4729 >>4725 I love it and you have no idea how happy this thread made me. I missed stuff like this so much.
>>4741 Morning, anon. And yeah, it's something we can probably handle as the /fast/ community gets hopefully grows. In the meantime, we can just enjoy the current pace of things.
>>4741 I guess the other thing is to weave some kind of particular atmosphere to the community where shitposters have a hard time penetrating. Establish a certain sense of community spirit and make the other anons look after each other and whatnot, so they don't reply to b8, they encourage swift reporting & ignoring, ect. A few communities have been able to do this but it's possible and can happen. Some things have to happen early on, though. >>4741 You're welcome! Honestly one thing I hate about discussing things in /sthg/ [and other places really] is that people are adverse to the idea of discussing anything in depth. When I used to go in Sonic communities in the 2000's, we used to do it all the time, but I guess with all the people obsessed with labeling what other people do as cringe and taking screenshots of what they do to laugh at with other people in different communities turned true blue fans off from that.
Oh yeah and I noticed pretty much all recent communities, even the ones based on discord, have large spots of people straight up refusing to discuss anything and just lurking. What's with that?
>>4747 >I guess the other thing is to weave some kind of particular atmosphere to the community where shitposters have a hard time penetrating /sthg/ was like that in the beginning, but I guess things got more relaxed in time. Having a community aligned in what they want is important. >>4747 >people are adverse to the idea of discussing anything in depth. I think there is a point where there can be way too much depth. I think I remember a few cases on /sthg/ of people discussing really dumb things in great depth and in great length where it became really fucking annoying, and at that point you just want it to stop. It's hard to tell if it's just shitposting in those cases. >>4748 Lurking is comfy. I do it a lot personally.
>>4751 I think that was a well known Sonic fandom member called "Sparky" doing that in most of the notable cases.
>>4748 Some people just like to view from afar. I lurk a lot of other Sonic communities, but rarely post there. This and 4chan are pretty much the only places I actively post.
>>4756 Not to mention, some like to lurk so they can really get a feel for the place before posting. I've done my fair share of that in other communities.
bumb >>4758 >actually lurking more to learn about a place before posting Things would be so good if more people actually did this.

Does anyone think the hate for Sonic is nowhere near as bad as it was in 2012-2014? Is it because of gamegrumps?
>>4776 Part of it is from the series having games that weren't as bad as Sonic 06 on a major scale & the fact that stuff like the Sonic twitter (for better or worse) gives the impression that SEGA can poke fun at their fuckups. There's still a lot of work to be done, though. Despite not being as bad as 06, games like Lost World & Forces have really struck a nerve with the fanbase by disappointing a lot of people. Hopefully SEGA can improve on the titles going forward.
>>4776 I think hate has turned into just sadness.

>>4881 How did you find us? And welcome!
>>4883 >>4882 >>4884 Thanks guys. I saw this place mentioned in /sthg/ on 4chan. It seems pretty fast (compared to other boards I've seen on 8ch) so far which is a nice surprise. I'll start off by asking what you guys think about Sonic Heroes. I thought it was a really fun game, but just needed some polish. There are a lot of quality of life changes that could make it an amazing Sonic game. Though honestly you could say this about most 3D Sonic games, eh.
>>4885 I'll always have some love for Sonic Heroes first 3D Sonic game I ever played & all, but yeah, it could've used some polish. Mainly the controls being a bit more tight, as well as the whole "play through the game 4 times to get the last story" thing, which I wasn't big on in SA1 either. But even then, the game had some pretty fun stages & the level themes/music are still pretty high-tier for me. I kinda wish we got level themes like Hang Castle/Mystic Mansion & BINGO Highway again, tbh.
>>4881 Hi, anon. Hope you enjoy /fast/
>>4885 I wasn't a big fan of the execution, but I will always say that the team gameplay was the best way to handle multiple playable characters and I would love for it to return proper.
>>4885 its soundtrack is kino
>>4885 It's been getting faster, but you're still going to need to have patience if you're used to 4/sthg/'s speed. Heroes is… definitely not a favorite game of mine, lol. I liked that the rails seemed to be more polished than on SA2, though not anywhere near enough. And I remember thinking that Knuckles' attack was the coolest shit. But I don't have a lot of good things to say about the game otherwise. Generally, I think it took the franchise in the wrong direction, and having to replay the same levels so many times is just unacceptable.
Making you replay all those stages was very unacceptable, I agree.

Had a dream last night where I was at high
>>4900 School and Dreams of Absolution was playing on one of my friends headphones
>>4885 Honestly, I haven't played it in some three years but I didn't like it re-playing it. The stages were too long, I hated the team system mechanic, the having to kill all your enemies to progress through the stage was a fucking chore as well. I remember getting it for Christmas or somewhere around there either a year it got released or a year it came out. I liked it then because I got to play as my favorite character (Amy Rose) but was thoroughly annoyed at the team mechanics and stage level progression engineering. I remember trying to knock out the rest of my 2 team members because I wanted to play it by myself. It was a little disappointing, tbqh. I remember being vaguely frustrated at the fact Fang, Bean, Bark, and Mighty weren't in the game. Hell, I'm frustrated at it now. I liked their original idea of putting Mighty & Ray in the game along with Team Hooligan instead of what we got now. I really, really hate Team Rose's set up too, with Big, Cream, and Amy. I think Big should have been replaced with Rouge at least. Also I re-call this has to be the latest Sonic game released (in 2003) I actually played. I didn't care for Shadow, dodged 06, didn't even try the other games maybe except for Riders, I didn't even care to play anything that wasn't the Classics or Adventure until Generations came out.
>>4902 >I didn't even care to play anything that wasn't the Classics or Adventure until Generations came out. Same case here except I played sonic 2 a bunch
>>4903 Man, I remember rotating between Sonic 3 and Knuckles, Sonic Adventure DX, Sonic SA2, some Sonic 2, and all of their hacks.
>>4904 I'mma share you a secret the first and only time I beat sonic 1 was on the GBA port.
>>4905 >spoiler Oh lord, to be fair I never attempted to beat Sonic 1
do you guys wish Sonic Team or the writers of the IDW comics would do more unconventional storylines, plot points, and team-ups? I would like to see a story where Amy goes on a long journey by herself and meets new villains and old friends along the way. She needs that sort of character development I think.
>>4906 It's sad but true. Although I might play the original version someday
>>4907 >I would like to see a story where Amy goes on a long journey by herself and meets new villains and old friends along the way If they did make an Amy spin-off game it better supply with obscure references and alternative Costumes

>>4909 I also know that classic sonic has been done to death, but companions like classic amy or cream would be cool too

>have really good online friend who's embarrassed about liking Sonic and is constantly bullied for it at school, people call him names like "Sonicfag" >I convince him to stop hiding what he likes, to just embrace it because you only have one life, who gives a shit what those other people say >he wears a Sonic t-shirt to school on the first day, a girl with a Sonic hat walks by and tells him she likes his shirt >I help him gather up the courage to go sit with her at lunch. They spend the rest of the break talking about Sonic, he helps her find her class and now my friend has someone he can talk to
>>4915 Sonicfag? What kind of small bumfuck town does he live in where people are autistic enough to say that out loud? I graduated in 2016 in one of the biggest cities in the US and I was never picked on for liking Sonic, ever. I even saw some kids with Sonic backpacks in my school and this was in 2014-2016. The rest is cute, though.
>>4902 >I think Big should have been replaced with Rouge at least. That wouldn't make a lot of sense, plus what would you do with Team Dark then?
>>4907 At least in the case of Sonic Team, that's the least of my concerns. They should first write a normal story worth giving a damn for. Regarding the comics, I'm sure we'll eventually see everything you mention once things are more settled down.
>>4918 >Regarding the comics, I'm sure we'll eventually see everything you mention once things are more settled down. I was talking about >unconventional storylines, plot points, and team-ups by the way. I doubt any one character outside of Sonic would get the attention the story you mention would need.
>>4917 Shadow would have stayed dead or been the final boss :)) Or at least throw Amy in with Mighty and Ray. Idk. I just don't like her with Cream or Big all that much. >>4918 Unconventionality is normally an attention grabbing interest for most readers who are drawn to a particular story, like S3K or the Adventure series. They've been too run of the mill lately, even Forces was predictable as shit. >>4919 You think SEGA mandates prevents some characters from doing certain stuff?
>>4920 >Unconventionality is normally an attention grabbing interest for most readers who are drawn to a particular story By going unconventional they would appeal the most to a reduced part of their clients, and at this point I doubt that's what they want to do. >They've been too run of the mill lately, even Forces was predictable as shit. I agree completely, but it's not necessary to do something unconventional for it to be good. Unless you mean that a god story would be unconventional because the stories we usually get in the games are shit. >>4920 >You think SEGA mandates prevents some characters from doing certain stuff? Maybe, but I was more so talking about what I mentioned above. Not everyone is interested in some characters so giving those characters a lot of focus is something they'll probably avoid, at least until they do other things first.
(3.75 KB 165x179 I7q1alB.png)

Has anyone used Mania character replacement mods here? Have you liked any of them? I am trying to find a good Amy Rose mod that suffices most of my requirements >Edited moveset as opposed to replaced animation >MOST IMPORTANTLY, a spritesheet that resembles the Mania sprite style instead of an obvious slight edit of a spritesheet from 2005 Nothing so far is meeting my standards, but I'll have to look further I guess. I was hoping for a game that's been out since last year would have more polished mods but I guess not. Also, a bit unrelated, but last year, I recall some guy on /sthg/ was modding Mighty & Espio into Sonic Mania. I told him my ideas for Mighty's moveset based on his Knuckles Chaotix moveset, e.g, to make him have a bound jump that works as a slightly stronger Bubble Shield in function and a wall kick. The modder said I had a horrible idea and called me an idiot. I'm reminded of this shit every time I play as Mighty with his hammer drop in Mania. Fucking shithead.

>>4895 >>4898 Man, I don't know why but these really bothered me. It's been a while since that happened. I think I may have a problem.
>>4921 So, how do you suppose they write a good story? The key would be consistency and character development, of course, but also, there should be good character interaction and some unexpected things happening in the story which catches the fan interests. Sonic fans were never too big on predictable storylines, I think.
>>4922 >modding Mighty into Mania Oh yeah, I remember that. Kinda funny, considering Mighty's now in the game. Also, I haven't really messed around with character replacement mods but I've been looking for a good Amy in Mania mod. Maybe I haven't been looking at the right places, but I've yet to find one that suits my needs.
>>4925 I'm thinking I should make one but I haven't even attempted to mod a sprite replacement in since two thousand fucking seven lol
Oh yea and I think most of the sprite replacements are amateurish as hell. I think the people doing mods now seem to have no experience and no polish at all
>>4926 Oof, that's been a while. But if it's something you wanna do, go right ahead.
>>4924 The things you mention sound good to begin with and are things current stories lack. Hell, just making the stories make sense and have some fucking cohesion would make miles of difference.
