Archie Comics Discussion Thread Anonymous 02/26/2016 (Fri) 00:29:29 No. 757
Throwing this up, since I've just realized that we're somehow missing one after all this time. Anyway, what's everyone's reactions to the recent news, along with Archie finally getting their shit together with no more delays?
F
I remember those delays. There was a lot of doomsaying, who knew the end was really near at just under a year later.
>>5072 >>757 >Archie finally getting their shit together with no more delays? Ironic, isn't it?
>>5075 A bit sad too.
>>5075 The thing that kills me is that I was a late comer to the comics and I feel they were really starting to hit their stride. They could have at least gave us the last issue of Mega Drive.
>>5076 Quite sad, but that goes without saying. Just when we were thinking it was going back to being fun storytimes twice a month, it gets canned. Do you think Pensers and that other clown had to do with it? I don't think we got an official explanation of what happened, did we?
>>5079 Ian has claimed they were not the reason it got canned, but I’m skeptical. The second lawsuit occurred that directly involved SEGA this time seemed like a final straw. I think when asked, Aaron basically said they can’t give the reasons at the first IDW panel, but I could be misremembering. The only real other guess would be either SEGA and Archie simply couldn’t get a new deal done (be it due to money, the lawsuit, or forcing a new direction/reboot).

>>5082 I fully imagine a combination of the 2nd lawsuit & Archie probably wanting to focus on Riverdale lead to Archie Sonic coming to an end. It's a damn shame, because the comic was really coming together & they were so close to STH & Universes milestone issues. I guess we can hope that IDW revives that world someday, right? R-right?
>>5087 I'm pretty salty about the milestone issues. We earned them. It's not fucking fair coming so close and being denied of them. Did Ian or anyone else elaborate on what was the plan for them at least?
>>5090 I thin Ian said that the 100th issue of Universe would give "closure" to some things, but that's about it. He mentioned that he's pretty apprehensive when it comes to talking about post-SGW Archie plans because he hopes IDW will revive the line one day.
>>5091 >he hopes IDW will revive the line one day That sounds ultra far fetched. It makes sense to leave the door opened to the possibility instead of shutting it close by revealing the whole thing, but still.
>>5094 The reason he gave is that IDW has a tendency to bring back lines from other comics after they acquire the license. I have my doubts we'll ever see it come back, but if it were it would probably happen under IDW, as opposed to any other publisher.
>>5087 I never got the impression Archie wanted to move on, if they did, they would've wrote an ending. This feels like SEGA essentially pulled the rug out under them regarding Sonic.
>>5096 The main difference is that I don't think the other companies who allowed older runs to come back were as stingy as SEGA is. Hell, SEGA decided mid-creation of the IDW comic that Classic characters were now off-limits. Add in any potential legal dealings with Archie (if needed) and I think it is incredibly unlikely for it to be revived.
>>5098 I could be wrong, but I think SEGA owns the stuff post-reboot. But if nothing ever brings that world back in official comic form, at least Ian can do Lost Hedgehog Tales or someone just starts a fan-continuation ala Archie Sonic Online.
>>5099 >I think SEGA owns the stuff post-reboot Even if they did, there's nothing stopping other parties from copyright trolling them, and considering the parties we're talking about here it doesn't sound unlikely at all. >Lost Hedgehog Tales Aren't we still waiting on those from the previous reboot?

>>5105 >Aren't we still waiting on those from the previous reboot? Yeah, we are. Fug
>>5079 >>5082 I made a joke about it awhile back, but there was an interview with Iizuka in 2017 that talked about various things and his move to the US. He talked about how everything with Sonic on it goes directly through him and Hoshino now for approval and that in the past certain things got approved and put through with their reluctance. In the back of my mind, I wondered if that could be part of it. On the other hand, only a few months before that in late 2016, Iizuka actually brought a bunch of Archie Sonic comics back to Japan to show off at the Sonic Cafe, so maybe I'm overthinking it.
>>5114 Oh yeah, I remember that last part. This is confusing as hell.
>>5126 I recall during one of the old I think Summer of Sonic Q&A panels he did, he said something along the lines of really enjoying and wanting Sonic to branch out into all these mediums like TV, comics, movies, etc. Yet, I don't recall anyone asking for any specific thoughts regarding the Archie comic series or the old cartoons.
>>5129 I remember that as well, but I never thought he meant anything specific with that. I mean, Sonic already has had TV shows, comics, games, sound CDs/vinyls, the whole thing, and I think even the movie had been anounced by then, so I just thought it was just a generic PR answer to the question he was asked.
>>5131 The one I think I'm recalling was pre-2013 I think, so it would be before the movie announcement. I also don't think he meant anything specific, but he probably was aware of their existence. He no doubt had to approve/disapprove certain concepts in the book at some point as head of the team. I'm mostly wondering what he thought about it, if anything at all. Even then, I'd be surprised if he didn't flip through the books he brought to Japan in 2016 out of curiosity.
I really hate how SEGA basically neglected all the SoA characters because they're American. You know its the case because they adopted SoJ fan characters into their games but couldn't do the same with the SoA ones.
>>5202 I mean, I kinda get it. I doubt any of SoJ really knew anything about the characters and saw them as nothing more than just for cartoons and shit.
>>5202 japanese companies generally ignore everything from their western branches. It's sad but nothing new
Why are we even having this discussion when we have this: http://archiesoniconline.com/ And yes, it's just like what happened to the British Comic. Plus it picks up from #247 pre-reboot.

Hey, so I really like the covers on the Sonic Archive Volumes, enough to buy them… but I've heard that some of them were censored from having characters appear because of Penders. Is that true, because that honestly sounds pretty lame.
>>20303 I don't recall the Archives line being censored from the Penders lawsuits. The mess from the lawsuit is surely why the Archives line eventually ended, but I don't think they altered any of the stories within the ones that released to remove characters.
>>20303 I dunno about the Archives, but I do recall issues of the mainline comic having to make changes to accommodate the lawsuit like having to take out certain characters & whatnot. But the Archives? I honestly can't say.
>>20303 If i recall correctly, before SEGA pulled the license they were actually under another lawsuit(from someone other than penders) because of these things, so probably not.
*because the plantiff's OC's were still in the comics archie was selling
are you shitting? the 6th largest sfw board is dedicated to sonic? this is a joke right?
>>20411 You make it sound like it's a bad thing

>>20411 If anything you should be surprised we're not an even bigger board. The fanbase is certainly big enough for that.
