Finally got around to watching part 1 of season 3 of Beastars. It was ridiculous, but it had some fun moments. I felt like the episodes went by too fast without advancing the plot much, mostly because the episodes tried to put too many subplots (like 5+) per episode, and each episode is about ~20 minutes. The Netflix adaption with english dubs is, of course, butchered, but fuck it, I watched it; I was never one for the whole 'sub vs. dub' internet flamewar, just pick one you like. Suppose I'll write a minor review here, may be some spoilers, be advised. Hopefully I can give some outside perspective on this, coming from someone who hasn't read the manga (yet). To paraphrase GamingSins, "If I have to read outside material to understand what's going on, it's getting counted as a sin." Reason being, the media should accurately portray and explain details in-universe of what's going on instead of relying on viewers to already know outside details from material that doesn't explicitly come from the media. So all knowledge in this review is being carried over from the first 2 seasons.

>Yahya the horse is introduced, plans on tracking down Legoshi.
Ok, I can understand the characterization of who he is and what he stands for, my question is, why is singling out Legoshi in particular? This is a world where illegal predation is common. Also, if he really is some kinda law enforcement official specializing in predation, where was this guy during the first 2 seasons when the attack at Cherryton Academy happened? It feels as if there was almost no investigation at all. Police incompetence is a common trope used to push independent detective work (i.e. Legoshi's investigation) forward, but this crosses over into gross negligence.
>First thing I notice is that they changed Legoshi's eye color from gray to brown.
Why.
>Legoshi recaps the events of Season 2, and ends by concluding he will never eat meat again.
...By the way, it was never explicitly stated what happened to Riz the bear. I assumed after the police arrived they took both into custody, Riz was put on trial, found guilty, and imprisoned, but that was never explicitly stated. Woulda been nice to have closure.
<Legoshi: "Thanks to Louie and the others testifying for me, they ended up letting me go with just a minor offense charge..."
This line in particular bothers me. What do you mean, "the others"? You mean Pina? He was the only other person involved alongside Louis at the bridge incident where Riz attacked Legoshi. There were literally only 2 witnesses. Who are these "others"?
>Legoshi dropped out of school, got a job as a delivery boy/waiter for an udon shop and now lives in an apartment. His stated goal is to live a normal life and start a family with Haru.
As stated in the anime, Legoshi dropped out by his own volition, he was not expelled. Gonna be hard to support a family as a delivery boy/waiter without a high school diploma. Gouhin even mentions earlier how hard it is for carnivores to get good-paying jobs. There's literally no good reason to drop out.
>Gouhin mentions that carnivores with a prior record of devourment cannot marry herbivores
So the state is directly interefering with consensual relationships? I feel like this was implemented solely to cause more drama.
>Gon, the tiger headmaster, states that due to the Tem devourment incident from last year, carnivores and herbivores will now be segregated.
Isn't it a little too late for that now? You waited months before implementing this? Besides, how is this going to help? Riz hunted down and devoured Tem after hours when the school was closed, not duing class. Although considering panther-boy accidentally tore off tapir-boy's arm during gym class, I can kinda understand, even though that wasn't a devourment. Come to think of it, WHY wasn't THAT mentioned? Also come to think of it, the world of Beastars is divided up into carnivore/herbivore split, but what about the omnivores? I think I remember a flamingo (omnivore) student in season 1 being on the herbivore's side...aren't the writers aware that flamingos eat shrimp?
>Gon announces the students for the advanced class; ALL of them are dogs.
Naturally~
<"Carnivores smell bad."
Rude.
>Legoshi ends up pinning his female apartment neighbor, Seven the merino sheep, to the ground in a meat withdrawal episode, before coming to and laying off
I feel like she should've been screaming more in this scene. She forgives him pretty easily and even hangs out with him instead of running out the room in terror. Unrealistic. Also, it's worth noting that in the episode just before this, Gouhin gave Legoshi drugs to stave off meat withdrawal symptoms, I guess that 'medicine' isn't very effective.
>Juno kisses Louis
So she's just over Legoshi now, despite simping for him the last 2 seasons? There was no buildup to the relationship, either. Juno just kissed him out of the blue.
>Melon unveils master plan to flood market with meat-enticing energy drinks to make a fortune in the black market
Er...ok? I guess it's not the worst plot I've ever heard...
>"500 cornered rats"; army of rat thieves. Introduced as a golem. Balls of living rats.
What.
>Police abusing rats over mayor's missing gold watch.
Plausible.
<Yahya: "All lives are equal...equally insignificant..."
Whenever someone mentions people or groups of people being equal, whether in high regard or low regard, they don't really mean it. The former is virtue signaling, the latter is being an edgelord. Considering this guy's 'job' is to hunt down and kill predators while leaving non-predators alone shows that he obviously values one group of people above another.
>Yahya reads a forensic report that Kines, the energy drink being pushed by Melon, contains narcotics. It's stated that regular animals don't know this, then a few scenes later we see some pushers trying to offer Legoshi a free sample. Legoshi takes one sniff and immediately realizes the drink contains animal parts.
See, here's the thing: canines have noses that are, in a word, superhuman. Dogs have noses that can detect billions of different scents, and from ideal conditions, can detect scents from up to 20 kilometers (12 miles) away. A dog's nose can detect an odor in parts per billion; if you put a drop of oil into a swimming pool, a dog would be able to smell it. Now, wolves have an EVEN GREATER sense of smell than dogs do. So what they're expecting me to believe is, that there wasn't one other canine who took a sniff from Kines, detected animal parts, and immediately reported it to the police. And aside from that, if you confirm that Kines has illegal drugs contained, why aren't the police doing anything about it? Isn't Yahya basically the chief of police? His suite is on the top floor of the police station, and he seems to have authority over underling cops. It's not as if Kines is an underground drug, it's later confirmed that Louis' fiancee's family owns the company that manufactures Kines. This report alone is proof enough to get the drink pulled from the market and launch an investigation. Remember what I said earlier about gross police negligence?
>Legoshi kicks the shit out of the pushers.
FINALLY! This is what I've been waiting for!
>Komodo pusher cuts off his own tail and leaves it for shishigumi as compensation for losing all of their money. The tail wiggles around on the ground.
Ew.
>Louis graduated and now attends university. Louis appointed Bill the tiger as drama club president after he left.
Um...are you allowed to do that? Don't school club presidents have to be elected?
>Pina quits the drama club since it's going to be segregated and he can no longer hang out with carnivores who will satisfy his autassassinophilia fetish.
It's odd that the other members of the drama club are sad to see him go, considering how much of a dick he was to them the first day he showed up.
>Gosha is introduced
The manga art design looked better. Still, would. For some reason, with what he's wearing, and the green skin, he reminds me of the Joker from the 2019 movie.
>Komodo venom sizzles on the ground[Expand Post]
It's supposed to be venom, not acid...also how did Gosha know Legoshi would be walking home and come by that exact spot where he was waiting for him? Gosha says earlier he couldn't get ahold of Legoshi since he cancelled his phone service. How did he track him down...?
>Gosha 'messes' with Legoshi by covering his finger in venom and sticking it in Legoshi's mouth. Legoshi comments his venom always tasted like bittersweet marmalade, implying he's done this before, and then gives a flashback confirming it.
...So...this is just something komodo dragons do to their families in this world...this is perfectly normal behavior here...?
>Gosha takes Legoshi out to eat at a diner. Legoshi orders a medium ant shake.
I'm sorry, what was that whole 'never eat meat again' thing about?
>Gosha starts his spiel about pacifism, just in time as a group of bird bigots walk in and start to harass him for being a komodo. They both leave the diner and walk down an alley before being accosted by said birds. At which point, Gosha proceeds to kick their asses.
While I enjoy righteous violence as much as the next dog, employing violence in just circumstances doesn't count as 'pacifism'. That's just being reasonable. Also, rewatching the scene again, they were both walking down a dead end alleyway between 2 highway overpasses...where the fuck were they going?
<Gosha: "You're lucky I haven't sprayed them (your feathers) with my poison!"
*Venom. Not poison. Komodo dragons are venomous, not poisonous. There is, in fact, a difference.
>Legoshi gets pushed down and just stays there while he watches his grandpa kick the shit out of the birds.
Inexcusable. If your friends, and ESPECIALLY your family gets attacked, you help them. This is very odd considering Gouhin specifically trained Legoshi about how to fight birds back in Season 2.
>Louis can't stand making love to a doe and vomits
Can't blame him. Just can't compare to canines~
>Yahya gets angsty about Gouhin 'betraying' him by wanting to start a family instead of playing heroes and wiping the streets of predators in a flashback.
By the way, in this same flashback, Gosha straight-up kills a guy. Legoshi mentions that komodo venom can kill any animal. Gosha coats his finger in venom (why not just bite him?) and sticks it in the big cat's mouth. That guy is dead. Pacifism, everybody.
>Legoshi is instructed to deliver udon at a harbor. Fish are introduced as sapient creatures with their own language and currency.
Why is this necessary? Also, how the hell did a fish living in the ocean order food from a restaurant on land?
>Sagwan the spotted seal is introduced. Later he's shown naked.
Not my first choice on list of characters I'd bang...
>Deshico the civet is introduced
As soon as he mentioned coffee, I knew EXACLTY where this scene was headed. Why, why, why.
