I don't care about making the money back, if it took twenty years of trickle money from steam to recoup I'd be fine with it. It's mainly saying fuck you to the system. You need to take into account that you are going to be paying them for the next two or three years. With no guarantee you will make that money back. For a turn-based RPG or VN you will need less coding to be done (meaning that it might be one or two) but at that point you are simply paying more for artists and less for coders. And I would say that it needs to be fairly decent mechanically for someone to bother picking up a turn-based RPG. Doki Doki is the level of sophistication you would be aiming for if not higher if you go the VN route, assuming you're not simply turning it into a porn game. It might seem like you are saving money by going for a VN but you would have a hard time standing out among the rest considering your competition. Turn-based games are also endless in number but can be done if you put shitloads of effort into it. Turn based RPGs and VNs don't need rockstar coders, any random software engineering student suffices (and learning to do it yourself wouldn't be a great strain either). And free engines, like Renpy or Godot are definitely good enough. Let's estimate high and say 10k to the art director, 25k per coder, assuming it takes a year (this depends on the size of the game more than the type), plus art school fags for another 10k, and booze. That'd seem realistic to me, and much more likely to recoup the money too. What you could do is have the coders make a creation kit-like thing where you can easily add content yourself without their help afterwards, that could lower costs.
