The webring is like a bookmark list of boards from different sites that updates itself with any change done to said boards. The concept was created by julay.world (now theguntretort.com) and smuglo.li in an attempt to keep fellow 8chan bunkers in contact with each other in case shit happened to one of them.
It's easier to understand with an example, so let's say Site 1, Site 2 and Site 3 are members of the same webring. A person on Site 1 would be able to see a list of the boards on Sites 2 and 3, and if Site 3 chose to add a new board it would appear on Site 1's list without additional intervention. Additionally, webring members can block others from their lists without leaving the entire webring, so Site 2 could say "I hate Site 1" and blacklist all of its boards (without losing Site 3 from its list) while Site 1 still could be able to see Site 2's boards.
8chan.moe was part of the webring for a couple of months, but the way it was implemented caused a lot of complaints, principally:
- 8moe's webring list didn't include all of the webring members, not because they were being blacklisted, but because the add-on was broken
- the webring board that could be displayed were buried in the sea of dead boards that this site has, without having an easy way to find them because both the add-on and Lynxchan are broken software
- 8moe's huge number of dead boards cluttered everyone else's webring lists, with multiple sites being under 190+ boards from the same site
- some sites complained that 8moe would steal their users because it had identical boards and a more recognizable brand
- other sites simply hated to see 8moe on the webring because they hate Mark and Acid
In the end, /hebe/'s drama served as an excuse to cut ties with 8moe for the reasons mentioned above and possibly more.
