It has come to my attention that many (myself included) are not Anglosphere natives. As such, it would make perfect sense having a thread dedicated to perfecting English as a second language.

How to improve my reading skills? I cannot read scientific papers properly.
>>475 I don't wanna sound like a jerk but the harsh reality is that you just gotta read more of them.

>>475 Is your issue linguistic or methodical? I used the method described in this paper with great success, it helped me a lot. In general, attending or watching a course on research design will also help in demystifying a lot papers. For the terminology of specific fields if you are lucky you can find encyclopedias, otherwise you will need to pick it up like >>476 recommends. My impression was that even native speakers struggle with scientific papers, it's a very specific form of text.
>>484 I cannot understand the words. This happens with my native language too, but i remember being able to understand a scientific paper in both languages.
>>490 Technical terms? That's hard as every field has its own vocabulary, sometimes even reusing terms from other fields to mean something completely unrelated. If you study the field, you should pick it up naturally. E.g., an introductory course will explain a great deal of the most common technical terms. Otherwise, I recommend trying to find an encyclopedia (just search for "encyclopedia of" + field name, for example if you want to read papers about birds, "encyclopedia of ornithology") and searching the web a lot.
