Weren't they more like feudalism?

Allodial feudalism, with its emphasis on property rights, hands-off rulers, lowered tax rates, and multiple competing suppliers in the sectors of arbitration and security, is a fairly good approximation of private governance. It's as close to ancap as anyone has reasonably gotten in history. Saying that Gaelic Ireland and Commonwealth Iceland weren't ancap because they were feudalistic is to make a distinction without a difference.

So you're admitting ancap is just feudalism?

Medieval ireland wasn't that bad, the conditions of the populations in Europe were bad at the time not because of the magical concepts of egalitarian democracy and the capitulation of society towards empirical science and intellectuals. The technology at the time was just not advanced and it takes time to breed intelligence(and accumulate knowledge as well). If ireland had stayed like it was in medieval times, with a natural elite creating and enforcing law, instead of the state, you can bet that ireland would be far more advanced in everything.
H.H Hoppe discuss the idea of feudalism and monarchy extensively. Read a book, you can get them for free at z library.
