Looking to buy something but aren't sure what to get? Ask here.
>>13378 Something old and cheap to just get you running, T440/p. Something new, don't fucking know, Framework I guess like the other guy said.
>>13378 So, there's some good/bad news on my end. The good is that I have a spare computer laying around that I can use as a laptop. The bad is that it's a Compaq Presario CQ60-210US with Vista installed. Figured it'll fit majority of my need since I wasn't using my regular laptop for all that much. And, as far as I can tell, the battery isn't draining like a sieve (Which is the case with my Acer Iconia W3 tablet). <I've already started uninstalling majority of the junk. However, I want another pair of eyes to see if there's anything that I may need to keep installed. Also, aside from majority of the "anti-spywar/debloat" how-tos, do you guys have any advise for what to do with Vista specifically?
>>13386 >Also, aside from majority of the "anti-spywar/debloat" how-tos, do you guys have any advise for what to do with Vista specifically? Purge it from any computer connected to the internet and proceed to install Linux.
>>13386 Vista is end of life so security is all on you hombre.
>>13388 I did find something called the "Windows Vista Extended Kernel". Know anything about that?
>>13386 >do you guys have any advise for what to do with Vista specifically? Put in a XFCE linux distro that will play nice with your 4GB RAM max laptop such as Mint Debian Edition
>>13388 >>13389 Okay, found an entire list of software and updates for Vista: https://msfn.org/board/topic/175262-last-versions-of-software-for-windows-vista-and-windows-server-2008 So, going to see about running through this. For some reason, Vista refuses to install LibreOffice, but I'm wondering if that's because I haven't installed an update that the program needs. >>13387 >>13398 I will be dualbooting with another OS, but I want to have an available version of Windows up and running first that I can fall back upon if need be. Speaking of which, can you breakdown which of the OSes listed here are good for what: >>>/v/896148 I keep seeing them posted, but I have little clue about the actual difference is between them (Barring AROS)
>>13402 >For some reason, Vista refuses to install LibreOffice, but I'm wondering if that's because I haven't installed an update that the program needs. It's possible. Some programs on win7 refused to install unless you had the SP1 platform update. Then you may also need to install the latest visual studio that works with the OS. Regarding the other distros based on looking at them first glance, Devuan may be a good option as it's basically Debian without systemd on a XFCE setup. Can't comment on the rest since I have not used arch. Clip OS has this on its front page and is basically abandoned >The project is now archived, developments and maintenance are no longer assured.
Does anyone know of any thermostats that DON'T require internet access in order to operate? Apparently EVERY thermostat sold these days is a "smart" thermostat.
>>13408 Jesus, why would a thermostat need internet access? for what purpose?
>>13420 So that, when the city government or the power company thinks that you're using too much energy, they can personally adjust your thermostat. Because, you know, climate change. No, I'm not making this up, they're ALREADY doing it: https://archive.ph/uOMdZ https://archive.ph/zNUvD
>>13402 > https://msfn.org/board/topic/175262-last-versions-of-software-for-windows-vista-and-windows-server-2008 Which of these Chrome browsers lack any spyware: <360 Extreme Explorer <Advanced Chrome <Comodo Dragon <Epic Browser <Kafan Mini-Browser <Maxthon
>>13386 >The bad is that it's a Compaq Presario CQ60-210US with Vista installed. Why not install some beginner-friendly GNU/Linux distro on it? Vista is full of security holes now and GNU/Linux supports all new programs that have (probably) dropped support for Vista I recommend something like Mate (or Xfce4) version of Linux Mint or Debian/Devuan with Xfce4. But first you need a USB flash drive with capacity of 4GB or more. Then download Linux installation iso and also download Rufus. Insert the flash drive on your computer and open Rufus. WARNING: All data on the flash drive will be deleted! Then select the Linux distro installation iso and click on "start" button. If it fails somehow, you should try using Rufus in dd mode. You can test Linux from the USB flash drive before installing it. >>13486 >Which of these Chrome browsers lack any spyware: I don't know. I think you should install PaleMoon instead as it probably still supports old versions of Windows. PaleMoon is safer because it's open-source and free software. Firefox (and thus PaleMoon) also uses less RAM than Chromium/forks.
do you have socks and proxies for cc??
Are there any decent resources out there for this kind of stuff? I need a lot of things - mechanical keyboard, speakers, webcam, wi-fi dongle - in the mid-priced range, but everything is either outdated (installgentoo wiki) or just incomplete (logicalincrements). Direct advice on buying those things would be appreciated also.
>>13979 Youtube for most things, weird dongles and stuff are basically impossible to find good information on, or if you can it isn't applicable to what's available in your region. Jewtube reviews are everything now.
Yup
I haven't had to buy a laptop in 10 years, because it was a decent ThinkPad. Have ThinkPads gotten worse in any way I should be made aware of? Are they still a good go-to option for lots of typing and lasts forever at a low price?
>>14358 >Have ThinkPads gotten worse in any way I should be made aware of? They have. I bought a Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga back in 2019, the screen started freezing just two years later.
>>14358 Soldered memory Usb C ports that break etc. Get a framework or System76
>>8062 Why would 4chin block those? Very strange
>>13979 I've been using a corsair gaming keyboard for 8 years and have had no issues. It has "cherry MX silent" type switches, and it's quite nice.
>>14496 They block all VPNs. Some providers spin up new IPs so quickly that they don't make blocklists for a few days, but since Mullvad is privacy focused they don't bother.
>>14496 Remember that 4chins is administered by people who don't hide their hatred of the userbase. It is true that allowing posts from TOR would instantly result in the whole site getting buried in CP forever, but a VPN is not TOR. 4chan also has backend scripts running that scan for a secret list of naughty words and hand out "banned text" autobans. I've got a three day ban right now for trying to post a pastebin that had additional terms for a wordfilter for 4chanX to deal with a persistent individual who uses bots to flood discussions he doesn't like with his schizo copypasta. People flood with copypasta, guro, lolis, that's all A-OK with the mods, or at least half the time it takes ten or twelve hours for a mod to put down the bong and do a bit of cleanup, if anyone ever does anything at all. You really shouldn't be surprised that trying to use a VPN gets a response like they caught you pissing in their oatmeal. They hate you. They really, really hate you.
>>14496 Allegedly they do it to protect from bad actors using them to flood. We know that's bullshit as >>14500 pointed out their site is flooded 24/7, blocking vpns clearly doesn't work. >>14500 That reminds me I was shitting on a welknown spammer's thread and the mods decided to ban me and not the idiot who has been spending 5 years flooding. I cut ties with 4shit after that. That also reminds me they ban half of south america's ips because of just one pedofag. They are so imcompetent that they think nuking a whole continent is better than dealing with one guy.
Someone recommend me a good resin printer
>>14552 Elegoo saturn 3 ultra with the acf film, just dont treat it as a fast printer if you want quality, and that applies to resin too.
>>13408 The some ecobee models like you posted can be put into a zigbee or z-wave mode for home assistant I think, otherwise honeywell makes dumb thermostats.
(145.76 KB 512x512 Apple CSAM scanner.png)

Apple macOS scans storage drives for CSAM / CP It scans your drives even if you don't have an Apple ID, disabled iCloud and don't use the macOS Photos app. https://sneak.berlin/20230115/macos-scans-your-local-files-now/ https://github.com/AsuharietYgvar/AppleNeuralHash2ONNX It's not clear whether it's just real life CP hashes they match for on their databases, if they include underage characters from hentai / cartoon pornography, if they comply with various national or state laws like Australia's ambiguous small breasts ban, or if they do more than simply comparing hashes, such as image recognition and send back tiny thumbnails flagged for further law enforcement investigation.
>>15018 That's crazy, even the MEGA cloud storage has an issue with that.
what can i buy for 6 dollars im konly going to be on here for like 5 more mins
What are some good linux lappies that can be had for under $500?
>>15319 maybe a refurbished framework 13
>>15319 ThinkPad T440 or T440p
My Toshiba X300 has too many reallocated bad sectors for comfort. Any recommendations for hard drive replacements? The drive's capacity is 3.6tb. The other two are an 18tb Seagate Exos, that's good right now, and a 4tb Micron SSD on an PCI NVME with 100% health.
>>9044 Who would blast a perfectly good dive watch with cum like that?
