Horror Anthologies Story Time Anonymous 10/31/2022 (Mon) 06:19:26 No. 30204
It's this time of the year. I have been reading old horror anthologies lately and it is crazy how often stories are actually good in ones from EC and from Warren. Even back then anthologies were mostly hit and miss, yet somehow these two publishers built up a stable of good artists and writers who managed to produce good books consistently. Jennifer is one of my favorites so far. It was originally published in Creepy #63. Dark Horse reprint collections have it in volume 12. It was adapted in Masters of Horror series' fourth episode directed by Dario Argento.

The second story is from EC's The Vault of Horror magazine #35. It's enjoyable but over reliance on narration makes it feel dated.

Now it's time for something from Eerie. It was another Warren magazine, a younger sibling to Creepy, created after that horror anthology was successful. Allegedly, the first issue of Creepy was rushed out quickly so Warren could secure magazine's title before Myron Fass had a chance to snag it. A Matter of Routine appeared in Eerie #5 and Dark Horse republished it in Eerie Archives v1. It was written by Archie Goodwin and Illustrated by Gene Colan. It feels like a middle ground between a Twilight Zone episode and one of the early Lovercraft stories. >>30205 It didn't notice that the author's names are gone in reprints. Jenifer was written by Bruce Jones and drawn by Bernie Wrightson.

Scared to Death was published in the EC's famous Tales from the Crypt magazine, issue #24. It's a simple story, but done well enough to be very satisfying. Feldsteion's writing is competent enough to be smooth in spite of being more verbose than modern comics. Wally Wood's art helps a lot too, even if a good amount of it hidden behind speech balloons. You might also see a common thread of an opportunistic suppose running through both stories from EC books I posted. They are far from being the only ones. For some reason writers working for EC liked to use that setup.

Foul Play was published in the 19th issue of The Haunt of Fear. This is the third horror anthology EC had in print. The story itself is rather average. However, it's an interesting piece of comics history. That's one of the comics that Seduction of the Innocent was using as an example and was one of favorite targets of several pundits pushing for censorship. It isn't anything controversial by today's standards. Like a lot of EC's horror stories, it is written by Feldsteion. The artist is Jack Davis who is best know for his work in Cracked and MAD magazines.

Vampirella's first book was not all about her. It was a magazine Vampi shared with other horror stories unrelated to her at all. In addition to having her own stories in the magazine, she sometimes served as the host. Many of these stories would not be out of place in Creepy or Eerie. However, they were more likely to verge into abstract or wacky territory in my eyes. Zooner or Later by Jones and Heath created for issue #78 is one such story. In addition it is more lighthearted than ones I posted so far. It's a bit longer too. This was my second choice for a story to represent Vampirella magazine. Image quality in my first pick was not very good. To the point it was hard to see the art. I will look for a better quality copy and post it later.

Halloween's here, so it's time for some creepy storytimes. The first story is "Thrill Kill" by Jim Stenstrum & Neal Adams from Creepy #75. It's not quite the typical Halloween fare but still a creepy read.
