Mostly background awards or the fighter Issamu tests being the primary model for the protagonists in 7. >>82103 Sorta. Macross up to about 27-28 was pretty good. Animation was sorta shit, but some of the designs were still surprisingly detailed. Then the post timeskip Earth arc happened and the creators dropped the plot. Then Plus happened, headed by Sunrise, it's animation is fucking great and the first two episodes of the OVA actually do have a passable plot. Then it's promptly proven that the writer can't be half assed to write a competent ending. In the meanwhile, the dogfights in the third/fourth OVAs are phenomenal. It's not a good idea to skip it because of the plot alone. I liked Isamu and hated what they did with Guld, making him into just an angry cuck who got pissed he didn't get any pussy. I think it's complicated enough to warrant watching, though I don't blame anyone for dropping it. 7 is just a different beast entirely to Macross. I get the feeling by the end of it that they were planning for a 60 cour or larger episode count, but got fucked and had to drop it to 49. A lot of the characters have autism. At least the entire alien cast (understandable?) and Basara (the protagonist.) Mylene is cute and Gamlin gets enough development to be good as well, but Basara gets nothing. Absolutely nothing. No character arc (except for when he gets depressed that his song doesn't work on Sybil), no change in attitude. He was going somewhere, but that's different from the actual execution. The plot is meandering and takes on a similar approach to Macross (crew gets stranded in space. Hijinks from a foreign enemy ensue.) Drama is executed very poorly. We barely ever see the effects of soldiers dying (or being drained) in droves on a colonial fleet. The first person drained only recovers by around episode 40. What the fuck? That means there was at least a month or two's time where the station was being attacked bi-weekly, with casualties in the hundreds, and no effects. Some buildings get shattered in scuffles, and yet the skyline looks exactly the same. Macross didn't have this problem. Aside from my issues of 7 being run like a monster-of-the-week show it generally can be entertaining, though a lot of people expecting war drama will be sorely disappointed. It's a good entry, but as standalone. Compared with Macross, it's just different. It's the type of show you'd expect from a writer who was obsessed with Minmay, but got forced by production to have a shounen protagonist. Basara is still cool for video related, but he's Gary Stu cool. Memorable from a Terminator angle, but not a character you'll be citing as 'deep' or 'interesting' past the surface level. Basically shit, but I still like him. Max is cool though. Easily one of the best characters in the series. Competent at his job, cares about his crew/people, and showcases that he hasn't, in fact, gotten rusty by obliterating a fleet with his original variable fighter. Everyone else has ayy tech or fighters 30-40 years newer. What a badass. First video is related but not where he uses his old fighter, but it's a spoiler if you really care.
