Why are RPGs and Strategy RPGs so overcomplicated today?
>Got the demo for Triangle Strategy
>Looks like a really pretty FF Tactics
>Actually play the demo
What the fuck. The tutorial is massive and handholdy, there is no way to turn off the tons and tons and tons of shitty voice acting, combat is slowed to a crawl by having to click through 30% more menus than necessary, and the game doesn't even have a basic "Attack" command. Even your basic "attack" is some kind of super special skill. The UI is too busy and the business is ugly to boot. Did I mention that the voice acting sucks and never goes away? And the individual characters require tons of boring-ass micromanagement for what amounts to disposable cannon fodder.
>Bought Legend of Runersia on sale a while back at anon's recommendation
>Finally try playing it tonight
>The tutorial literally gives you an achievement for "Press the A Button"
Same problem here. The whole thing is inelegant as fuck , the menus are overcomplicated, the characters have no real introductions, including a bunch of named characters that I have no reason whatsoever to care about. The whole thing is like an overcooked meal slathered in too much ketchup.
Meanwhile let's look back at FF Tactics.
>5-6 characters to a map. Enough for variety but easy to control.
>Each character has a limited list of abilities by job and they are all straightforward, but you can still mix and match them some to give you lots of easy-to-understand options.
>Each character has a few simple equipment slots and you can start acquiring basic equipment immediately. Equipment items are straightforward and easy to manage.
>Each character has a simple battle menu with a basic Attack, Magic, Skill, Move, and Item commands.
>Passive bonuses from terrain and special other things are explained right in the tooltip when you actually interact with them.
A simple system that you can dive into to a very great depth. Infinitely better than this modern take of a system that "goes wide" right from the start but limits its depth, or else forces you to plunge in and overwhelms you until you're bored.
Modern RPGs are shit. SHIIIIITT
