Gatekeeping Anonymous 08/21/2023 (Mon) 17:58:51 No. 12859
ITT we brainstorm about how to prevent unwanted influxes of newcomers that change the culture of imageboards. Preferably ones that can be implemented in a P2P way. For example: they could require a quorum of existing users to approve new users. This would probably require some sort of identity based on i.e. asymmetric crypto. But users could stay anonymous using ring signatures.
>implying 8chan still gets new users It will be fine
>>12859 that's not a computer chip my dude, it's a generid DIP package saved lmao I think a web-of-trust kind of thing might be interesting which allows attaching some kind of reputation to posts when they choose to identify themselves and maybe some kind of consensus system? Imageboards will be just that and I think trying to change it would - at least to some people - invalidate the entire nature of it being an imageboard in the first place Active moderation that doesn't let partisan spammers/peddlers take over is half the battle
altchans rarely get retards. 4shits is enough to keep the common pleb entertained. we're fine
>>12892 >altchans rarely get retards Are you sure? Have you seen kohlchan, or soijack party?
>>12889 >I think a web-of-trust kind of thing might be interesting which allows attaching some kind of reputation to posts when they choose to identify themselves and maybe some kind of consensus system? That is against the entire ideology of imageboards
>>12893 soyjak party is made up of zoomers and they're a whole worse breed of retarded, so it's not even worth mentioning >kohlchan german board. nuff said
>>12859 I am a complete newfag to darknet boards. What are you afraid of? Are we worried about normies installing Tor or are we worried about bots?
>>13376 4chan was apparently once more of a collection of likeminded high iq people that led nuanced discussions. Now it has become a magnet for normies and redditors who can barely think for themselves and write the first thing that comes to mind. https://boards.4chan.org/r9k/thread/75144649/you-guys-wont-leave-me-like-all-the-others-did#p75145147
>>12893 Both boards have their own distinct culture, but kohlchan is the remains of krautchan/einskanal culture, which was similar and related to 4chan oldfag culture, soiaparty is just this nihilistic unfunny soijak zoomer crap that spawned a few years ago. There are worlds between the two.
>>12859 idk why you'd go with ring sigs. theres other asymettric crypto schemes that aren't just sucking xmr's dick. Shamir sharing among users would be cool. I think a big problem is that web driver automation like selenium has led to places like 4chan being filled with bots and shills. Anyways, federated instances are pretty cool idea imo, but already done with mastodon and even then, theres always infighting.
>ITT we brainstorm about how to prevent unwanted influxes of newcomers that change the culture of imageboards. You're fifteen years too late, and according to some people, earlier than that. Most of the damage was done long ago, even 4chan is rotting, not only evident from merely looking at the place any time in the last five years but reflected in the stats too. That said, it becomes much easier on: - a self-hosted imageboard where you can hack in features - a board with an actual topic (if you have the luxury of banning politics, or all politics outside a containment thread, this does absolute wonders for gatekeeping) - a board with an actual culture (surprisingly rare after so much dilution from 4chan/8chan sites) When I say a board you can hack in features to, you can even gatekeep with custom captchas (e.g. name this molecule, which class owns the means of production, select all the female anime girls), so long as you're willing to suffer the high barrier of entry - it's pretty common to hear people calling imageboards a dying medium and not without good reason. So if you're going to block off all users who aren't already intimately familiar with your topic, it's going to filter out, maybe, 20 commercial CP spammers and wandering schizo /pol/troons and 2 actually curious people who just can't answer the question yet.
>>12892 This is absolutely false. In fact, many of them just receive medically-ill obsessed deranged people who are kicked out of all the other boards. t. jannied three of them over the last decade.Consider anorectal violence poster (I cant upload images) who has spammed the same posts on any imageboard they can find, nearly every single day, for over 10 years. Even /comfy/ has to kick out retards who come to shit things up.

>>12859 plebchan does what you want, it's part of the plebbit protocol, decentralized and P2P https://plebbit.com/
This isn't a /t/ech issue, it' s a soft/culture problem and thinking you can fix it with code is dumb.
Create a federated imageboard and actually maintain it. Use ActivityPub. RIP FChannel Also who gives a fuck about influxes lol

>>14283 Thinking that the material conditions (especially the software) and the culture which develops on top of it are completely distinct is dumb. This is a /t/ech issue, even in a code sense.
>>13974 >idk why you'd go with ring sigs. theres other asymettric crypto schemes that aren't just sucking xmr's dick. Shamir sharing among users would be cool Those are not even remotely the same thing lmao. Shamir's Secret sharing is a way if splitting up private keys so you need m out of n "shares" to sign a message. Ring signatures are a way of hiding in a crowd by only revealing that your signature was made by one of a number of private keys, and not a specific key. So you could use your private key to sign posts to make sure you were allowed to, but you would still be anonymous.
>>12859 well, i'm a newcummer. what ya gonna do now, goy??
>>13446 the problem is bots really, and paid shills
