Miniature painting Anonymous 11/22/2022 (Tue) 00:33:35 Id: 0cbd14 No. 521
Post miniatures that you have painted. Here are my plague boys and ultraboys.

And the ultraboys. I will admit I got really lazy with these guys.
Man I wish I had miniatures. This shits so fucking cool. I keep saying im gonna buy a squad of blood angels but I never do. Man I should.

Update on one of the deathguard marines. he is now finished! well sorta, couldn't get the ground correctly since the "armageddon dust" dried over. well either way I am happy with him.

Here is something not warhammer related. I got this dwarf berserker looking dude and tried to paint him. It went ok but I feel like I was being lazy with the colours. I dont really have the shade of gray that I wanted to paint that little fur thing hanging off his kilt. I also tried using the glue I had to fasten him to the base and that just kinda ruined the paint on his shoes. I attempted to paint the eyes but it looked awful so I painted over it. Might have to get an even smaller brush to make the eyes work.
Back to warhammer. I got this guy off of tradera for like half the price he would be on GWs site. Only problem is that he didn't come with anything aside from the model, he didn't have a base so i will need to find one of those. First image was painted on new years eve, the other four was 3-5 hours ago as I for some reason decided to start painting at 1 in the morning. This was also a bit experimental for me as i tried applying a different base paint first and then painting the green over it and seeing if that looked any better. Didn't look that different, Probably could have just painted the base green and then not paint over the green as I usually do. I also got to try painting the parts of the model before assembling them which was a first for me and I quite liked it. It was a bit of a pain to paint the helmet while holding the helmet but doing detailing on some of the larger parts was a lot easier. The guy also comes with 2 head options and I choose the helmet as I did not want to paint eyes.
>>563 You know looking at it again I am kinda tempted to just throw it in a vat of paint remover and start over again. I should thinned the paints way more than I did. Its like I just threw globs of paint at it.
>>563 Woah looking nice.

I attempted to paint a vampiress that I bought a few months ago but I really hated the skin colour, Try as I might it just looked ugly. So I got some paint remover and tried getting rid of it all with mixed results.

>>572 Oh right forgot to mention that the ultramarines are also one of my least favourite chapters and i wanted to paint them something else. So far I am debating whether to paint them as Death guards or try my hand at painting them as lamenters. Lamenters is going to be so fucking difficult though. I also painted this knight some more. Currently trying to glue the sword to his hands.

I also visited a gameshop called Alphaspel and they had some neat models. Not sure if I should be posting them in this thread since I didn't paint these but I really like the nativity scene with the nurgling.
How can I learn mini painting basics? Assume I have access to paints, an airbrush, etc, but am a no-talent assclown who can barely dress himself in the morning. I've got a big bucket of Reaper Bones D&D figures I want to paint and no idea where to start. How do I get gud?
>>578 Step 1. THIN YOUR GODDAMN PAINTS RETARD.
>>578 I have no idea, the only thing that I know is that you should apply a undercoat to your models first. This helps the other colour stick to the model properly. Something I like to do is after dipping the brush in the pain I do a few brushes on some newspaper so there isn't that much on the brush. Helps a lot when you do finer details, you dont want to just slap a glob of paint on it. I would also recommend a table lamp, trust me when I say its a lot easier to miss parts you haven't painted when you don't have a light directly pointed at the model. Besides all of that I think its just practice. Look at my models, the first ultramarines are god awful but I think I am getting better. >>579 You know I have been told that paint thinning can be done with just normal tap water but I dont know how true that is.
>>583 WarhammerTV based an entire series on painting miniatures with that as their gimmic, Duncan Rhodes has his own fucking youtube channel now. >Khorne is red >Ultramarines blue >Thin your fucking paints >Two thin coats will do

Managed to get this guy for cheap. He took a while to arrive but now when he is here I assembled him and started painting him. its not complete obviously but I think I made some good progress. Now I just got to paint the eyes red, the tracks black and the weird mass of flesh at the back some shade of pink. I dont have pink colour though so I might just mix some red and white and hope for the best.
>>592 So far so good, maybe its the color but your paint thinning issues arent as present anymore. You may need to get a steadier hand though, some of those color lines arent respected.
>>597 >steadier hand Is there a way to train your hand to be steadier? I hope there is, my hands are way too fucking shaky. is it all just experience?

I got some old warhammer figures, 2 of which were from 1993 and this one I have no idea. I attempted to paint him as well and I think I did an alright job. It was also fun to be able to try different techniques, I dont have any grey paints so I ended up mixing white with black to create the fur colour you see on his boot. Ended up looking more light blue than grey but thats ok too I guess. I was also talking to Parias and he told me about Pinwashing, You just water down a dark shade and then put it on the recesses or just areas where it would be grimy and I think it worked pretty well in making the boots and the shoulder armour look more worn.
(122.20 KB 746x508 unacceptable.png)

>>626 Looking at it again I noticed I completely forgot to paint the handle. Fuck my life.
>>598 Yes. The issue isnt limited to painting toys. A gun requires a steady hand, a pistol even more so. So how to get one? Building up you hands strength helps. Practice helps more. Go the range more my guy.
(24.73 KB 300x377 huh.jpg)

>>629 >get a gun and start shooting to improve your painting skills. I mean I guess that could work.

I'm trying to get into terrain modelling. I've bought all sorts of supplies and tools (not to mention foam) but, thanks to my depression, I just sit at my work table and go blank. Can anyone please assign me a small building type or prop to get me started? I'll post pics.
>>668 Make a commie block! I dont know shit about terrain modelling but making a commie block seems like it would be relatively easy. Or just make like a deserted plain, Something like WW1 no mans land.
(271.56 KB 1100x856 No_mans_land.jpg)

(34.19 KB 660x174 No_mans_land_1.jpg)

>>668 Some images for inspiration.
(282.45 KB 1200x1599 warhammer seinfeld.jpg)

>>669 I was thinking something more D&D or other fantasy thing. It's not for Warhammer or WH40k. Also, out of curiosity, what's a commie block? Like a block of cold war era apartments or something else?
Is it cheaper to buy a 3D printer and print your own figurines? The quality won't be as high of course, that's a given.
(704.21 KB 2218x1668 commie_blocks.jpg)

>>675 >Whats a commie block They are these rather ugly eye sores of apartment blocks. Kruschev Liked building thousands of these fucking things. Known for being rather ugly and cheap. If you want something more D&D then maybe try the inside of a tavern? you got a bar, some table and a stair case leading up to the second floor. Could be neat.
>>676 In the long run? absolutely. In the short term you're going to have to pay for the printer and everything else that you need but if you need a lot of miniatures then yeah go for 3d printing. I should mention that I dont have a 3d printer but I got a friend who does and he seems happy with it. Even if the quality of the models is a bit subpar.
(4.92 MB 2999x1999 Block of khrushchevka.jpg)

>>681 The actual term for these buildings is a khrushchyovka, sometimes jokingly called a khrushchoba. There are a few different types that go by different names, what you posted are brezhnevka which are the really tall ones. They were built to address housing problems in the Soviet Union, they were intended to be temporary but as you probably know there's nothing more permanent than a temporary solution. They built millions of these, in some post-Soviet regions almost 90% of the population live in one of these, in some entire countries around 70% of the population does. These buildings were meant to be replaced and torn down but it's very difficult for governments to justify nuking such a huge portion of their housing infrastructure that they inherited for free. This slapped together "temporary 20-year solution" ironically ended up being extremely important, it provided an enormous amount of high-density housing over a huge region that previously didn't have it. This housing project is the reason an apartment in Warsaw costs $500 a month. Sorry for the derail, the history to these buildings and their unintended impact on Eastern Europe is interesting to me. >>682 Really cheap 3D printers but decent can run for only $170, you'd start saving money rather quickly wouldn't you?
>>689 I guess you would, I dont know if I would trust the cheaper printers though personally.

Miniatures have always impressed me and they look like a really neat hobby to get into, but I've heard a lot of people talk about how expensive a collection with all the right tools and paints can get so I've always avoided them since I try not to burn through my wallet. I used to work with a guy who once talked about working for Games Workshop but he never went into detail what he did. Sort of regret not asking him more about it. >>579 https://yewtu.be/watch?v=m3p_VuPIS2c
>>695 Unfortunately yes its a very expensive hobby. I have been able to get by relatively cheaply but just using the paints from the starter set I got years ago but that does limit you a bit in what you can actually paint. I kinda wish there was a company that would sell miniature paint in bulk. I wonder if you can use normal house paint for models?
>>697 >I wonder if you can use normal house paint for models? I doubt it? It's way too thick and probably would flake off even if you thinned it out.
>>698 Well that sucks.
Hey I had an idea for some of my sisters of battle. I am normally a bit averse to kit bashing but I thought of giving one of my SoB minis a scythe. Making her a real Sister of nurgle! Thing is I have no idea where the scythe would come from. I was thinking of just taking a scythe from a typhus model but that would mean buying a typhus model just to leave him scythe less. Anyone got any suggestion? I tried finding sites that sell death guard bits separately but couldn't find quite what I wanted.

>>695 Michael's and Walmart sell some great inexpensive paints that I've had some good results from. Craft Smart satin acrylic paint. 3D printed miniatures have made things a lot less expensive for regular fantasy and sci-fi minis... but stay the hell away from Warhammer if you don't have a lot of money. Also, buy stuff that isn't affiliated with Wizards of the Coast because they deserve to burn in the fires. If you want to try it to see, buy red, yellow, blue, white, black, and silver, a fine brush, a bigger brush, and a plastic mini. You can mix the colors as needed if you remember your early school days. Check out the myriad youtube channels for how-to vids. Use water to thin the paints.
>>704 >walmart Dang it. I dont have that in my country. I will keep an eye out for that though, thanks anon.

I dont even know if I want to post this. I finally tried to re-paint my ultrasmurfs into death guard and its not going well at all. As you can see the I am doing just a terrible job at it. I wanted to try and do the trims first and then everything else but its just kinda led to more fuck ups. I cut my painting session short. I still want to try painting them green and brass but ill have to do it some other time.
(1.83 MB 3264x2448 001.JPG)

>>717 This was a terrible idea.
>>717 >>719 Shouldn't you have soaked them in acetone to try get the paint off first?
>>720 I did remove the paint! well most of it anyway. I didn't use acetone though I used something called "biostrip" >>572 Probably should have used more of it.

I took a break from painting Marines to painting a traitor guardsman. He was so much more fun to paint. I think I did a much better job with this guy than I did anything else. I think this guy has actually become my new favourite.
>>724 Not bad anon. Yeah he looks pretty good. Maybe youre getting better?
>>725 I sure hope so. Feels great to have a painting session where I actually felt better at the end of it.
>>724 Really good job around the eyes, very clean. I like the little blood details.
>>727 Thanks anon. Funny thing about the face is that I was originally trying a new paint. "Pale flesh" is it called. Thing is when I applied it it wasn't really pale flesh it was just white. I ended up just using bugmans glow to try and cover it up but there is still a bit of white.
(1.49 MB 2448x3264 005.JPG)

I kinda took the other pictures before the earthshade had dried. Here is a better picture of it.

(2.12 MB 2448x3264 002.JPG)

(1.84 MB 3264x2448 003.JPG)

Painted another traitor guardsman. I am really happy with the result, only thing I am not happy about is the skulls but oh well. I guess I could have done a better job on the rusting on the armour but i'll have to do that next time.

I got 2 minis painted today! Third picture is the squad in progress.
(2.02 MB 3264x2448 005.JPG)

I finally got around to start painting this old space marine model. Thing is I got hungry mid painting and so I stopped here. How do you guys think it looks?

>>744 The final result. I am not that happy with it. I decided to use white for the chest wings and I very much regret that. Not only did it get everywhere, my attempts at fixing it also just made it worse. Should have just waited and gotten some gold to paint it with. I haven't glued it together so I can take it apart and try to fix it later but for now its like this.

Even if nobody's replying to you, I still like lookin at your paints, anon
>>755 Thanks anon. I am glad you like them.

(2.27 MB 2448x3264 011.JPG)

(2.28 MB 2448x3264 012.JPG)

Well I started painting some more of the plague hauler but then I kinda got bored and stopped. There isn't much job left to do just paint some more of the gears and exhaust ports and then the tires black. I do like how the flesh ended up. Mixed some white and red to make pink and it was a bit brighter shade than I wanted but oh well. Later on it had hardened a bit so I added some more water and it made a slightly redder shade of pink that I applied. On the contrary I think I watered down the bronze way too much.
>>705 >Dang it. I dont have that in my country. I will keep an eye out for that though, thanks anon. You're welcome. You can buy CraftSmart satin paint through Amazon.com. I don't know if you can get it through your country's amazon since I'm not sure where you are. The 59ml bottles last forever. I've only needed to buy white and black more than once, so far. Oh, and some shade of green I was using.
BRU ISNT EVEN USING FUCKINB PRIMER
>>767 But I do. I usually prime with black paint and then paint over.
(1.82 MB 3264x2448 004.JPG)

(2.25 MB 3264x2448 003.JPG)

(1.76 MB 3264x2448 002.JPG)

New mini painted. I think he came out pretty good even though I cant really paint his face. I could try but I dont think I have a brush that is pristine and small enough enough to do it.
(2.55 MB 3264x2448 003.JPG)

Got 3 new miniatures a while ago. 2 duck warriors and a human warrior. The reason I got them was that I wanted to try painting metal miniatures. I think I am going to try first with the mini on the left. I am also going to undercoat it with white instead of black for what I feel are obvious reasons.

>>785 Well first attempt is done and its not very good.
>>786 I want to elaborate a bit. I originally was going to just make the eyes these like black dots but it looked awful, So my mom suggested painting larger eyes so I would have more room to work with. There are specific parts to put eyes in though already but then I tried making them larger anyway. While doing so I got the idea to fill the black space with white and then put a blue dot in it. It almost works but now he just looks like hes got eyeliners. Not really what I wanted to do but I guess its better than just a dot. I also really regret making his cap red. It stands out too much, I should have made it brown or something not red. Should probably apply some wash to the horns as well to make them look better. On the bright side I do like the darker red that I decorated the armour with. I got it by mixing the leadbelcher and red paint together and I think it looks pretty good. I think for the next one I am definitely going back to using black undercoats, Its easier to hide mistakes with those.

the guard are mine i painted them and the space marines my friend painted and are his >>768 are you priming with primer or just paint >>786 you need a smaller brush or somethin i think bru
>>794 Looking pretty good anon. I like the green helms and dark brown coats. Really works for Krieg. >Primer or just paint. I am just using normal paint. For most of them I am actually using black airbrush paint. I figured since most people prime their stuff with airbrush paint applying it with a brush wouldn't be too bad. >Smaller brush Definitely. Smallest brush I have is something like OOO, Which I thought was the smallest but today I noticed my friend had a 5/O brush. Need to go find one of those while I am at my local hobby shop.

I am fucking retarded. While painting I was going to mix some "tan flesh" (its pretty much just white) with yellow to make bone colour but some paint had dried in the tube and as I squeezed the entire thing came out. Got paint all over my stuff. Its not too bad I can probably get it away later but its annoying. On the brighter side I finally painted my space ork! I think I did a pretty good job with this one. I fucked up a bit on the face, might have had a bit too much rust on the bolter but aside from that I like it. Armour looks nice, Axe looks good, Helmet looks good. definitely one of my better paintjobs. Only other big problem is that I probably should have painted the gun "hole" black so it doesn't look like he is just holding a toy.
>>794 What chapter are those marines btw? I assume its a custom chapter.
Where the fuck can I find 28mm bases? I wanted to buy some of those notsquats but wargames atlantic doesn't include bases for their miniatures. >Oh well ill just buy bases from somewhere else, Surely plenty of sites will be selling 28mm bases in bulk Nope. No one except random fags on etsy seems to be selling 28mm bases. I found 28.5mm bases, Plenty of 25mm and 32mm bases. For some fucking reason 28mm are just not something anyone has.

Got done 3 models today! Wanted to do a bit of speed painting to get all of these traitor models that I bought so long ago finally done. The results? They look ok. Not that good or bad just OK. on the bright side I got them out in about 2-2 1/2 hours. Had already done the flamethrower previously but I think this guy is slightly worse.
>>863 Honestly I like these a lot. Your brushwork seems to really be improving.

I failed again. I tried painting the second metal miniature that I had but it ended up being complete garbage. The sun on the shield looks like a child drawing and the eyes look googly and amateurish. I should just get rid of the paint entirely and try again, this is just awful. So far my attempts with metal miniatures have been complete failures.

>>1012 They are finished! Sorta, I did a very sloppy job with them but I am feeling drained working on them. I really think working on 4 models was the mistake for me. I also tried something different, I got a new wash called "Flesh wash" and tried using it on Rakarth flesh. I thought rakarth flesh would look more nurglish so I used that instead of the usual bugmans glow. 2 of them have the new wash on their skin (rest is agrax earth shade) and the other 2 have flesh wash. If I remember right its the first 2 in the first pic that used flesh wash, I cant really remember. I don't think it made much of a difference.

In the same session that I finished the above 4 I also decided to paint this guy. last of the traitor guard models that I had and I love how he came out. I kinda forgot to put the rust effect on him but besides that I am very pleased with myself. for this guy I sprayed him first with white paint and then began painting with a wet palette for the first time. Well the other minis were also finished with a wet palette but you know what I mean. This guy made me realize that having white as a base coat isn't that bad of an idea. Would black have been a better base coat? maybe, But this guy came out fantastically so i do not really care. I did have some white paint on my hands though and it seems to have rubbed off on his cape. I will have to fix that some day.

Painted another one today. This one though is some Sister of battle. Originally I wanted to kitbash them together with some plaguebearers but I am too lazy to do that. Also I dont want to give GW more money. I think I did a subpar job with this one. Not the worst I have ever done but far from the best. I think adding softtone to the skirt was a big mistake as well, added some green spots that I am not a fan of. I also dont like using so much metallic colour, It feels lazy to do. This was lazily painted anyway though so eh. I also want to try a different colour scheme just to see if it works.
>>1023 Looking at it some more I think I need to spend a few more hours on this one. As it is right now it just looks lazy. Definitely need more layers of paint on the plasma gun and the gloves.
Genuine question about >>1023 Should I be thinning my paint more? I am using a wet palette and I thought that was enough for thinning it out but looking at it some more I think I might need to add more water.
>>1025 Haven't painted anything yet but the texture at the rear of the cape looks like you wrestled with thick paint and made it come out pretty good. A video I watched mentioned wet palettes only replenish water at about the evaporation rate, but not the medium that suspends the pigments. So as advice from a guy who hasn't practiced what he's talking about, try adding a brush of water onto the paletted paint, and only putting an amount of paint that you'll use in the next hour or two. It should also help with transferring paint to small areas or with small brushes since it won't blob on your brush. This video is one I plan to try following, https://yewtu.be/watch?v=sBDVPoNXyVI And this one goes further into thinning with paint additives, but I think water is fine https://yewtu.be/watch?v=FuSFCiLvs1w

I finally got the second sister of battle painted! Some of the details are kinda fucked but I think it turned out amazingly. I haven't applied a wash yet and I am still debating whether or not I should do that.

WIP. The back plates (?) were going to be painted brown but I thought it looked like shit. The red is a mixture of Mephiston red and leadbelcher. On the cover the Ogres are reddish brown skinned but I wanted to make them look like cave trolls so I painted their skin rakarth flesh. Not quite as pale as i wanted but I think it might work. Anyone have any suggestions?

shit me I didnt realise 8ch was still alive and knocking about, been years since i've browsed/posted, may as well contribute some of my recent WIPs as well as pic of some recasts that arrived recently :D >>1042 >>1070 these are looking good anon, are you priming your minis and thinning your coats? beyond that these are some bretty slick basecoats !! you should try experimenting with washes/shades next to add a bit of depth to the models' sculpted details if you're looking to try some new techniques in your process
>>1080 Nice to see another oldfag finding their way here. Are those raumjäger units? I thought about getting those. Nice paintjob on them. >Are you priming your minis? Of course. I got some white primer in a can that I use. I would have used a airbrush but I haven't gotten one of those compressors.

>>1081 based, was just asking as few of the pics in the thread look like they're painting onto bare plastic yee these troops are RaumJäger from WGA, really nice kits tbf, appear to scale well to at the very least the octarius krieg guys though I have no idea about the new cadians. And ty re: the paintscheme ^^ was originally doing just a little 4ed detachment of witch hunters and using them as Inquisitorial Stormtroopers, though I may just do an enitre army i'm loving the theme that much lol, pic related is the start of an inquisitor and his retinue ^^ Guess it's a good place as any to ask too, I'm wanting to kitbash my own Arco-flagellants rather than buying the official kit though I'm struggling to find a good kit to use as a base, closest i've seen to what i'm after are Crypt Ghouls from AoS/WhF and their proxies that mantic games do though both are still not quite what i'm after... any suggestions for kits would be massively appreciated, especially if they're non-geedubs and doubly so if I can use it to kitbash a daemonhost too ^^

Ogre boys! The one on the right was actually finished a while ago. I took pictures of him before I had applied any wash though. Now I finally got around to painting the second Ogre as well and I think he looks great. At least it would be if the fucking glue that I am using didn't ruin it all. So annoying, I should get some of that glue you just brush on surfaces instead. Well despite the glue and me possibly fucking up his arm placement I think they both look great. The one on the right was assembled first and then painted. This means he has a lot of white spots I cant reach without ruining the model. Second guy on the left was painted and then assembled which lead to the glue problem. Not sure if I am going to paint another 2 handed boy or the shaman next. I ned at least 13 of these models to make a 750 point army for Age of fantasy. I also want to do more for the bases but I have no idea what to do. The bases are so large that it is kinda distracting how empty they are. I was thinking the terrain should be like the floor of a cave. Maybe get some gravel and sand and mix that together? Could be nice. Just gotta disinfect it before I glue it on.
>>1082 >Arco flaggellants Kind of a hard one. They are a pretty unique unit. I guess you could take some zombies and make some metal parts with green stuff. Might be a bit complicated if you want them to have whips though. Might also be very time consuming to make all of them.
>>1023 >Gold and Blue surprisingly not a bad color scheme for the SoB.

Painted this guy last week and I thought I did a pretty meh job. Not really good and a few white spots missing but its doable. I do like the potions on the back and the robe but the staff was just awful. It doesn't help that I had a hard time making out what the fuck half of it was supposed to be.
>>1155 Looking at it some more I think I applied way too much wash.

Haven't posted here in a while so i might as well do that now. First pic I am not entirely happy with. Second pic I tried painting the skirt and legs first and it was way more pleasant. Especially since I kinda just covered the legs in brown and stopped caring about where the pants start and where the boots start. Not my best work in the world but I think its perfectly fine.

New ogre! I am really slow with painting these guys. I really like how this guy ended up. Halfway through I thought it was going to be a bust but nope it turned out pretty well. I especially like how the back turned out.
