Personally I preferred it over GitS, at least over the movie I watched.
Its basically just a violent character drama in a cyberpunk setting with cyberpunk problems, rather than a pretentious wank-off on "what-ifs", where either nothing happens, or its convoluted as fuck otherwise.
At least in the movie, GitS felt closer to the latter and it was pretty fucking boring and tedious.
Personally, I just don't think I like cyberpunk, period.
Only cyberpunk works I liked thus far have been the original Blade Runner, and Edgerunners (oh, and the Shadowrun video games but that's something different entirely)
Watched shit like GitS, Psycho-Pass, Cowboy Bebop, Blade Runner 2049, etc. and had a close friend who told me about some of the others like Jin-Roh and Akira and whatnot.
Most of them are just too nihilistic, pretentious, boring/convoluted/unimpactful, and with mediocre if not bad themes for me to enjoy.
I want a cyberpunk setting where there is someone who fights back against the shitty world and its wrongs, like a freedom fighter/resistance type shit; instead its all "everything is hopeless and everyone is gay, just give up and give in" shit, or transhumanist thought experiments.
At least Edgerunners was simple and had its moments, though it was frustrating that the only characters who had common sense and understanding was the MC's mom, Rebecca, and the giga-nigger's hideous tranny-looking GF.
Everyone basically helped make their own problems and lied immensely to themselves, but at least someone fought for something worth fighting for, even if they did so much retardation and caused a lot of the problems themselves.
