>So what happens if you can't afford the property tax, do they take your house away?
probably same as any unpaid taxes to the IRS (part of government that enforces taxation). they knock on your door and demand the money, if you don't pay they steal your stuff and sell it until the debt is paid. yeah that could include the house, or maybe just a sofa and a china cabinet, depends how much you owe
I've thought about the different kinds of taxation and I find property tax the least unethical tbh, it's most similar to traditional European feudalism. if you own land in a community, you must pay an amount relative to the value of your land to that community to fund public services like fire stations and having roads paved. then the community will have to pay some of that money to the state, and the state to the federation. makes sense, if only the taxes were a reasonable amount and only used for reasonable purposes
other forms of taxation are worse. income tax and sales tax have the government sniffing their nose into people's business too much, estate tax messes with inheiritance which is morbid, capital gains tax makes it very difficult for the little guy to get anywhere financially. if you accept that some form of taxation is necessary, I think property tax is the least objectionable, even though it does have that 'you don't own nothing goy' stink to it. the economy does work in such a way that renting out a property will more than pay for the property tax, it has to. plus property tax increases the difference in financial status needed to live in more upscale areas which helps keep the urban dregs away from the nice neighborhoods
