>>13339 if it makes you feel better, there's probably a large chance we get nothing of value from SXSW and it's just TSR footage we've already seen and an announcement for the storymode we already know exists
>>13339 Thats very unfortunate
>>13340 Movie trailer is going to drop and we gonna go fast at the very least.
>>13342 >Movie trailer gonna drop I shudder to think what's gonna be in it

>>13340 >rumors about a new cartoon start doing the rounds >cartoons chick is at SXSW what if a new cartoon is announced? I can't remember her talking about any other thing every time they've had her in public.
>>13347 What would a new cartoon even be?
>>13348 Mania Adventures 2
>>13348 I can see a Mania Adventures Season 2 with Sonic, Tails, Amy, Mighty, Ray, Metal, Eggman & Knuckles being announced, or a new Modern Sonic cartoon. Personally speaking, I'd love both but given how popular the Mania stuff has been, I can see SEGA continuing to ride that particular train.
>>13350 I would love a Modern cartoon series, but Mania Adventures is probably easier and cheaper to make since there's no voices.

Have you ever rage quit a Sonic game?
>>13357 I somehow made it through Sonic 06 and ShTH.
>>13357 just once but I came back a day later. I got way too frustrated with that one fight in Sonic Battle when you're Knuckles and fighting three Guard Robots at once
>>13357 I didn't ragequit, but playing Hydrocity in Sonic Mania Tails got an air bubble when I was underwater & was 1 second away from dying causing me to die. I had to pause the game for a couple of minutes.
If there is nothing for modern Sonic announced at SXSW, I think he might be dead or getting phased out
(229.21 KB 800x600 1487117799601.png)

>>13357 Rage quitting at a video game? Haha, no, who would do something like that haha. Yes, twice I think, one with Heroes and one with SA2. I think both were on heavily rail-oriented levels. I'd have to look the levels up to remember which ones they were and at what points it was, but you guys could probably guess them anyway.

>>13361 >Tails got an air bubble when I was underwater & was 1 second away from dying causing me to die
(113.17 KB 640x748 pouts.jpg)

>>13357 not really, unless you count when I was really little.
>>13362 I was the first to panic about that with Boom but right now I don't think they have any reason to do it. Even if it's not doing so well, it's still a franchise that they can whore out and get a decent amount of money from, and currently I see no reason for them to give that up.
>>13362 Forces was like one year old right? And TSR is literally still happening. I really don't understand where did all this forced mentality where a series has to be talked about 24/7 to stay relevant anymore. Like, I wish I was still in 1996 playing Sonic 3K and still have the idea Sonic was still a thing after 3+ years when SA1 and 2 happened. I don't get it, is this just common for every franchise now?
>>13368 Modernfags have a victim complex. Ignore them.
>>13368 People tend to worry too much about where the series is heading, tbh. I remember SEGA mentioning at last years SXSW that the current plan is pretty much: Modern & Classic are gonna be their own series with a respective branch getting a title every couple of years or so. Besides, there's more money to be made appealing to both Classic & Modern fans.
>>13370 That isn't a doomsday scenario but it is absolutely a sign that SEGA has no idea how to fix Sonic.
>>13368 I think we're still used to having more frequent game releases. That no longer being the case brings a lot more uncertainty, made worse because the franchise is not in a good spot and we don't know where it's headed. I also think the fanbase is structured in a way that expects the series to be talked 24/7 and things being as dead as they are now doesn't help.
>>13368 Forces hasn't been mentioned since its release and Sega is barely advertising TSR outside of Japan which doesn't make sense because Japan doesn't care about Sonic. It's good that they're trying to increase the series' popularity there but if they're going to ignore the West it's kind of alarming
>>13372 That's probably the case. I mean yeah Forces hasn't been mentioned a whole lot since release, but that's pretty much because of its reception since similar treatment was given to Lost World after it got mediocre reviews. TSR's lack of advertising could be cause for concern, but I imagine that has something to due with how it was getting some pretty mixed reception of its own pre-delay. And there's a chance that they haven't fixed much of it, but we'll see
>>13374 my biggest fear with TSR is that it somehow turns out really good, like 8+/10 good but it sells like garbage because the lack of advertising and it being released so close to CTR. Then Sega will get the idea that delaying games to fix them up is pointless and we'll never break the cycle
>>13352 I personally want deeper stories but this looked a bit too much like a soap opera. Nonetheless I'm not one to complain of having more fan animations out there, that's always awesome.
(37.86 KB 616x383 kek.jpg)

https://twitter.com/sonic_hedgehog/status/1100219799722909696 kek Also, it is was Ohshima's birthday, you did wish him a happy birthday didn't you /sthg/?
>>13377 I still remember Ohshima posting the little OC he made in Forces. It was a kinda cute one. Either way, happy birthday to based Ohshima! >>13375 That's fair, but I think word about games tend to travel pretty fast these days. Who knows, if TSR turns out to be great that word could spread & ramp up its sales?
>>13357 Lost World at the last Zavok boss fight. Took me over a year before I went back and finished it.
>>13363 Rail levels around those times were really sketchy, so I don't blame ya.
>>13363 >heavily rail-oriented levels Rail Canyon?
Not really news, but THQ held an AMA on /v/ yesterday and it turns out Sega has the rights to distribute the Advance trilogy rather than them despite the their labeling. Hope I can find an archive of that thread since it fell off and journo sites, ResetERA, and the other /v/ made a huge fuss over it-I wonder how many know the board owner was also the one who originally leaked Mania as the "12 game overs guy".
>>13382 >SEGA has the rights to distribute the Advance trilogy Well, I suppose it makes sense given the few years THQ was out of business. That being said, this does make me wonder why they never bothered re-releasing those games.
>>13383 They did… in Japan.
(73.87 KB 479x431 1504642431595.jpg)

>>13383 A bigger reason is it being a GBA game. Not to my knowledge, but are there ported GBA games at this point in time? I'd imagine at best it would have to go to Nintendo's hardware, but then again, Lost World was meant to be Nintendo exclusive yet they still rereleased it on PC for some reason…
>>13382 >THQ held an AMA on /v/ Holy shit, at first I thought you meant 4/v/ and I was surprised but that place has been becoming more and more mainstream, but it was actually here?! No way!
>>13387 Yeah, that's actually pretty damn cool. Although I imagine it couldn't have gone well
https://web.archive.org/web/20190227221154/https://kotaku.com/anyone-for-sonic-the-hedgehog-lego-1832912457 After LEGO Dimensions, I'm surprised we haven't gotten a LEGO Sonic set, yet.

New IDW Sonic storytimed in >>13390 This new issue made me think, what would Eggman even do with himself if he ever beat Sonic?
>>13398 It'd probably depend on what beating Sonic means exactly. >try some new science stuff for a while >get bored >get frustrated with his situation, becoming increasingly angry and depressed >blame Sonic for being defeated >trash a base full of robots out of anger >get angry at Sonic >proceed to devise a way to undo what he did to Sonic so that he's able to express his anger to him personally >get too focused and fuck things up, allowing Sonic to escape and revert things back to normal
>>13398 I feel like Eggman would just prefer him to be a prisoner forever and watch his accomplishments. I feel like a big goal for Eggman should be to try and break Sonic's spirit,

Do y'all plan on buying TSR?
>>13472 Depending on how the final version of the game turns out
No… Because to sum up the game in short: "It's SSASR: Transformed, but downgraded and shameless." This is just a cash grab, the only thing I expect is that it will have at most 60% on Metacritic. Anything more than that means I lose the bet.

>>13472 Not currently. I only play Transformed because friends play it, and they only got it because it went cheap for $5 and there really isn't a great alternative kart game for PC. They don't like Sonic either, so I doubt I can convince them to buy it for $40
>>13475 I think it'll be in the 75% range. The actual racing seems fine and that's the meat of the game. I do imagine a ton of reviews saying moving to a Sonic-only roster was a poor choice and guaranteed they'll shit on the story mode.

>>13598 >Seaside Hill remix Hell yeah
>>13595 I also don't think he really fixed anything. I have to admit that people "fixing" awful redesigns is becoming a pet peeve of mine. Like, I understand why it's appealing to do and why people like doing it, but in the end it feels like it sends a message more like "this is how you should do it / could have done it" instead of one that makes it clear that it's something they should not be doing, and I feel over time that makes people more receptive of them.
>>13598 Why would you take a person who doesn't like Sonic to something about Sonic?
(71.42 KB 640x480 pussdestroyer.jpg)

>>13600 To me, it mostly depends on how the redesigned look turns out. Say for example, someone complains about a design & does their own spin on it that makes the same mistakes they felt the other design made, I can be a bit annoyed by it. But for the most part, I've always had an interest in seeing people put their own spins on certain things like character design, games, or whatever. >>13601 Aaron is pretty good friends with Arin IIRC, so he probably just brought him over to Japan to hang out & did this meme video in-between that.
>>13601 Same reason you send him cupcakes.
>>13600 I don't think that matters because no one liked Paramount anyways. Not to be disrespectful, but people have been doing this for as long as creation existed, because someone "Does something" to piss someone off, and as a result "Something better" comes out from it, even if it wasn't directly spite, which most people aren't doing it out of pure rage. The people posting better redesigns on halfchan are acting more hostile than the people actually doing the drawings themselves.
(3.26 KB 125x120 1490519652828.jpg)

>>13601 I don't know. And it makes me angry. I do not understand why Aaron continues to bring Arin along for Sonic-related things, as if he's ever going to be nicer to Sonic games. Aaron is only encouraging Arin's continued tarnishing of the brand. If your dog shits on the floor, and you give him bacon in response, he's going to keep shitting on the floor. Any social media expert will tell you that what Aaron is doing is wrong, and that he should be promoting e-celebs who are actual Sonic fans like JonTron, Somecallmejohnny, cobanermani, StephenKnux, Balenaproductions. But instead, Aaron chooses the man who is the source of 70% of blind hatred for this franchise on the internet.

>>13598 I saw the tweet and was grossed out and haven't watched the video yet, gonna do it in a sec, I want to see if I can compress it into a webm somehow. >Sega of America, Inc. paid for Arin Hansen's and Jirar Khalil's trip to Tokyo, Japan >this shit was paid by your vidya money Holy fucking shit fuck Sega.
>>13605 To play devil's advocate: Games like Sonic Mania have been able to succeed/become critical successes, despite the usual stuff about Sonic being said & the people who are usually drawn to the "Sonic was never good" meme vids that go on places like YouTube, are usually people who were never Sonic fans to begin with. I don't know what's really gained by using Arin Hanson on stuff like their official social media pages, but I do think it's a bit much to say that people like Game Grumps have hurt the brand more than say, some of the disappointing games SEGA's released.
>>13602 Yeah, it can be fun when it's a fan related thing but right now it feels like everything's up in the air and Sega's coming up with redesigns and shitty decisions like it's nothing and it doesn't feel like a fun thing anymore. >>13604 >I don't think that matters because no one liked Paramount anyways I don't know if it's just people being ironic but I've seen people saying they did or that it wasn't that bad, and I always see people bargaining (like mentioning that with some changes it wouldn't be so bad) instead of telling the company to unconditionally shove it.
>>13605 >JonTron Wouldn't work because people hate him for political reasons now. Same reason people threw a stick about him being a VA in A Hat in Time. But I agree with the rest.
>>13609 >Wouldn't work because people hate him for political reasons now. Same reason people threw a stick about him being a VA in A Hat in Time. That is an extremely vocal minority. (723.29 KB 1920x1200 027.jpg)

>>13608 I imagine there's some people who genuinely like the design, but this point: >mentioning that with some changes it wouldn't be so bad is kinda odd to me. I mean, yeah it would be better with some changes, but those lack of said changes is kind of why it's been catching so much flak. Well, on a more positive note I was thinking back to the Sonic Mania release trailer & the reaction the fanbase had to it & I've been wondering: What was some of the happiest moments you've had in the Sonic fandom? Whether it was seeing a certain moment happen in a game/comic/tv show, or a certain announcement or whatever.
>>13608 People like to be contrarian, for good or bad content, it's just how humans act. Or really, "adults" act. Back when everyone in my age group (millennials) was teenagers, hugboxing and circlejecking was the biggest shit and fuck me do I hate that more than I hate the contrarian posting we got now. Nothing's more shitty to me than faking happiness. At least cope with bad shit instead of trying to 100% lap it up. >>13611 > What was some of the happiest moments you've had in the Sonic fandom? In the Sonic fandom? As much as it's been starting to make me sad about Sonic Team's quality control, fans making quality fan games, even if they most of the time don't become full projects, makes me feel better wanting to be a game designer and gives me something to enjoy where Sonic Team couldn't.
>>13598 Man, they were so awkward in this >after being in the Tokyo Game Show >after playing a demo of the game they were brought there to shill >what did you guys think? >silence >it's really loud ha ha Song wasn't completely bad. With all the buzz around Sega's new HQ it would have been a lot more fun to just do a more traditional video showing more of it than this.
>>13610 This may sound weird, but I'd kinda like for Aaron to use the name brand & exposure Sonic already has to shine a spotlight on fans & content creators that could use a bigger fanbase. People like somecallmejohnny already gets some views, but being an official Sonic stream with Aaron Webber for example, could give him some really good exposure as opposed to JonTron, who's already super popular. Besides tumblr's ded, it's all about Newgrounds now. >>13616 That's pretty cool, yeah. Seeing projects like the Hero/Ring/Bumper Engine come to life & progress to the point that people are making stuff in it finished or unfinished has been amazing & some of them (like Islands & Utopia) have some really huge potential if they ever reach completion. >makes me feel better wanting to be a game designer Tell me about it. I've been saving up money for a while now to get a good computer so I can mess around in at least one of those fan engines for a fan project of my own that I'd love to try. I should probably find that Google Drive that had all the museum project assets, too.
>>13605 >If your dog shits on the floor, and you give him bacon in response, he's going to keep shitting on the floor. I guess putting videos of his dog shitting on the floor on Youtube makes it justifiable to him. A bad Sonic movie was just going to be that, a bad Sonic movie, weirther it was going to be animated or not. The reason it's a worse thing for Sonic is because of his bad games since 2006, if that shit never happened the bad movie wouldn't be associate with the rest of the series like with Mario when his movie happened 20 years ago.

>>13639 There is literally, positively, objectively, no fucking reason why a video game movie can't work. The only reason they don't is because nobody in the film industry actually plays video games. Even if they did, it would only be on a casual "ignore the cutscenes and have brainless fun for an hour or so" level. Obviously adapting a game to the screen would be problematic, but Sonic has a wide cast of characters, a bevvy of settings to choose from, and entire lexicons of lore to pull from. If you can't adapt it…just do your own thing. It's not that difficult. You have your setting, you have your designs, you have your hero, you have your villain, you have your supporting cast. JUST WRITE A FUCKING STORY. One of these days, someone who grew up playing video games and giving a shit about their narratives, characters and lore will either produce or write a film adapting it to the big screen.
(2.40 MB 250x188 1506901073891.gif)

>>13643 >no fucking reason why a video game movie can't work. The only reason they don't is because nobody in the film industry actually plays video games. Even if they did, it would only be on a casual "ignore the cutscenes and have brainless fun for an hour or so" level. So exactly why a video game movie can't work. Detective Pikachu is the prime example of a video game company having a lot of control over their product, and it's still going to be "brainless fun" because that's all movies are good for. Fiction isn't a big thing anymore, look at the state of American entertainment. Kids would rather listen to some e-celebs opinion instead of playing games or reading a book. Imagination right now is legit dying out. It's unsure if we just because A.I in the future, but right now, kids don't care about how fantastic a movie about a cartoon character could be, so how on earth can it truly be "good" in the biggest sense of the word? Was Sonic's movie ever going to hit hard in kids hearts like the Toy Story movie did for the first time? Hell no. Is the Mario movie going to be the best movie ever because Mario is the Disney of gaming? Hell no, his shit is likely going to be boring, brainless fun like all other cartoon movies at best. Ratchet and Clank might have some fantastic visuals, but so does his remastered game. What's the appeal? Back in the 90s/2000s, movies was leaps and bounds ahead in visuals than anything ever created. But now, really any game could emulate the fantasy of visuals in interactive form. So what's the appeal now? Story? No one knows what Sonic is anymore, all of what he was are all nearly irrealant. Sure you could retell something used in his past, but what would it do to make the movie wrothwhile? With the current design of Sonic, either just play the game version/read the comic version of whatever the movie is stealing plots from, or see an infearior version of old content. If it's new content created just for the movie, will it revolutize story telling? Doubt it, so what makes watching this worth it? Cringe factor? Maybe, but we just had other shitshows like the Emoji movie, so why not just watch that? At least the designs isn't eyerape like realistic Sonic. Nothing about this movie was going to be anymore more than "decent" which wouldn't have matter much at that point. I'd rather just have a decent game than a decent movie because all this would do is case more preferences in this completely fractored fanbase to the point it might as well be bad like it is now so people can avoid another thing that isn't Classic/Modern/Adventure/SatAM/Archie/etc. There's just too many fucking differences in Sonic for me to care what this movie could have been with better direction, that falling under "video game movies are always bad" makes me cope better instead of having hope for this movie to begin with. I rather we go back to just ONE identity of Sonic before making movies about yet another Sonic that isn't the one we all grew up with. Mario get's all the fucking luck, and I'm fed up.

>>13698 Alrighty then: Now, we need a group of people capable of operating under one cohesive vision as well as folks who can create the needed resources for a project of this level. Any of the assorted fan engines out there provides a good blueprint for gameplay but we need modelers, artists, people who can code etc. to help make these ideas reality.
>>13699 I know multiple people who are Sonic fans and are skilled in those areas, except programming and coding. That would undoubtedly be the hardest part.

I'd love to see something made with the Utopia engine. That's the kind of gameplay I want from a sonic game, momentum based in 3D, less homing attacks and lightdashes.

>>13708 SA, not DX
>>13709 Nobody is going to be able to agree on what they want, which is going to be the biggest issue when it comes to this. Personally I want something more modern and boost-like. I know /sthg/ despises the idea of Sonic having an accelerator (because either they equate that to a run button, even though it isn't, or they are uncomfortable to the idea of movement not being totally controlled with the analog stick, even though Spyro does the same goddamn thing) but I truly think that is the ideal way to be able to control Sonic.
>>13711 Tru dat. I'm just a drawfag tho, wouldn't know how to program either of those. Wouldn't mind helping any of those gameplay directions though

>>13693 Hmm, if for real, how should we start? I think it would just be best to take the most liked and objectively considered best elements of SA1/2/06 and roll with it (no pun intended). Personally, I think as long as the engine used is easy to add shit to it and understandable to use, if we: >Take Sonic's gameplay in SA1/2 as the core gameplay and add to it whenever possible for other characters to feel different >Make the plot a retelling of Season 3 of Sonic X >Remaster Chao Garden with tons more content and features >Online multiplayer mode And most of all, just make it more simple than complex, it should be doable with a decent enough sized team.
Why don't you guys start this off by giving this "idea" a separate thread?
>>13713 As long as we don't add any fan character I guess it could work. By the way, if you want it to be more simple, the plot should be simpler too. I'm not saying sonic 1 simple but, yeah.
(463.37 KB 659x851 DzZxYblX0AANiOF.png)

>>13708 WOW. What even IS SA2's problem anymore? There's so many fuck ups with the overall look of that game it's boggling my mind so much now. Amy, if you also add in the non crossed eyes of the Battle version, looks really cute and hot. *Cough*, anyways, to answer your question, why not just a mix of both in HD?
>>13714 Sure, why not? If we wanna go anywhere with this thing, it's gonna need a proper platform for it all.
>>13715 >the plot should be simpler too. Yeah, I'd imagine. I think if you just think about Season 3's key points to the story and just abridged it down to their key elements, that should get the job done enough. I'd have to rewatch it again to remember it all though, but I guess it's possible with a little effort.
>>13714 Why? It's Sonic discussion in the Sonic discussion thread. We never get to talk about anything, and we're slow as molasses. >>13713 >Make the plot a retelling of Season 3 of Sonic X >>13715 >>13718 >the plot should be simpler too Wouldn't it make more sense to retell Sonic 06? I mean, that is what SA3 was originally supposed to be and it is a more natural followup on SA2 with another hedgehog and higher stakes. Just maybe nix a bunch of stuff about Elise or Mephiles. Simplify it to where it doesn't lose the stakes, depth or emotion but disregards the unnecessary, pretentious crap. >Take Sonic's gameplay in SA1/2 as the core gameplay and add to it whenever possible for other characters to feel different Believe it or not, I actually appreciate how 06 treats characters other than the main trio and think it's better than what SA1 and SA2 did. Most of the time, characters like Tails or Knuckles are relegated either to their own side-stories and missions unnecessary to complete the game, or very short segments within the trio's levels that lets them be involved but not enough to disrupt the flow or fun you had with the other gameplay.
>>13719 No human main or secondary characters, please. As a background for the world they're fine, but we don't need an Elise 2. And nerf time travel, that's a one way ticket to plot holes.
>>13711 I actually think Sonic Islands had a really good idea of Sonic maintaining his momentum allowing him to achieve Boost-like fast at his top speed. One of the reasons why I've been hyped about that. >>13713 >add to it whenever possible for other characters to feel different This actually brings me to a question: How would you take that SA1/2 Sonic gameplay style & add to it for say, Tails or Knuckles?
>>13720 >but we don't need an Elise 2. I've thought about this stuff for years about how 06 could've been written. Here's what we do: replace Elise with Blaze, and give her an active role (possibly playable) instead of the typical damsel in distress bullshit. Explore more of her royalty status, and even better, use the Flames of Disaster stuff to explain how she gets her powers. >And nerf time travel, that's a one way ticket to plot holes. Do you mean nerf, or nix? Because it definitely needs a nerf with more rules in place to prevent plot holes, and stop them from time-travelling at will. That part is bullshit. But you can't have Silver without time travel, so it should still exist. X-Men: Days of Future Past has a good model for how time travel would work. As in nobody can actually travel between past and future, they just project a version of themselves there and snap back if something pulls them away. The Time Stones would be an interesting way to make this happen. It's what the Archie series did, after all, and it's stupid how the Chaos Emeralds seem to do basically anything the plot requires them to do.
>Wouldn't it make more sense to retell Sonic 06? Eh…Maybe, but unlike the Metarex saga, 06 has a lot of baggage that comes from what that game forced on between Sonic and his "admirer". At least in Sonic X it was straight forward "find the emeralds, but in space" with some romance between Tails and Cosmo but it wasn't as heavily focused on, kinda up until the end. If anything the Metarex Saga is like a Sonic version of Gurren Lagann. But by all means, we could try something else. I just wanted to add in another element tied to the Adventure days is all.
We need a writefag for this
>>13721 This actually brings me to a question: How would you take that SA1/2 Sonic gameplay style & add to it for say, Tails or Knuckles? Well, ideally like in all the other 2D games, make them like Sonic but with unique differences. Yeah I get this could be boring to most people, but Mania Plus' Encode is kinda what I wish Heroes was more like instead of structure having team members being how to progress the level by default instead of to explore locations you couldn't access unless you used the right character for extra goodies or secret routes through the level. In fact I actually think Sonic would do great keeping the Sonic Advance 3 approach to have two characters during play at all times, like Forces kinda did with the OC and Sonic. It was one of the most liked styles of play in Forces iirc to most people too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJQ-jO-QtcA Hope you all have a lovely Saturday night!
>>13727 You too, anon!
>>13725 I think, for a 3D game, the standard "Sonic but with a different ability" schtick would not only be boring but difficult to execute. The large and complex levels with like 10 different paths for each character would be overwhelmingly difficult if not impossible to represent in 3D. It'd be more worthwhile to give each character their own gameplay style not unlike what previous SA games did, and give them their own uniquely designed levels. And if you want to have a giant Sonic level with a bunch of different paths that all use different abilities…just give Sonic those abilities. Let him dig with a yellow wisp. Let him fly with a jetpack. Let him smash walls with a souped up spindash. Really, what is the appeal in having every character being able to go through the same stage? That would raise so many questions that don't need to be asked, limit how expansive the level design can be, and what it accomplishes isn't really worth it to be honest. Imagine if Mario Odyssey had Peach be playable and she was required to get some moons. She would break some challenging segments while others might be impossible, because the game was designed entirely around one character and his limitations. Plus it's annoying to have some things locked behind characters you might not enjoy playing as. Donkey Kong 64 does that, and it's excruciating.
(3.29 KB 209x182 1516997273740.png)

>>13729 Well, although you do have some points as to what could go wrong, the difference here wouldn't be to make these different places "Mandatory" because god forbid this isn't already the issue that's been plaguing 3D Sonic since SA1 or anything like that… But what makes the classics/advance/rush/etc work so well with this formula is how each character gives you a personal way to play the game how you want under the "standard" core gameplay. E.g, Smash Bros. Many playable characters with 90% of them having unique moves and different behaviors, all under a similar "rule" of overall gameplay. The problem with DK64 was the MAIN reason collectathon died out as a genre for so long, with one of them simply being on a system with a framerate of 12FPS…. Like with Tootie over Kazooie, these games having so much to do, so much backtracking, just to beat the game, gets very tedious for a lot of people. However, this very same element still exists in some games that has literal world wide appeal, called Minecraft. The trick to making this formula work with more people to make it feel fun, is that the steps to the final goal need to be FUN too, otherwise it feels like a chore, or a job. One of my favorite games as a child, Rayman 2, was like this to me, and why Rayman 3 later on has a sweet spot for me because it's linear by comparison, but shorter. Both can work, but modern games can afford to condense the more open ended game more for convenient sake and still feel fun (see A Hat in Time) Basically, it's not about making Sonic all do these things because it's easier, because it's simply not a factor. Smash has clone fighters with differences only down to character skin (Daisy, Dark Samus, Chrom) and I'll be the first one to pick Daisy over Peach in a heart beat because she's better to me, like some would say about Shadow over Sonic, or Cream over Tails or something. In todays world, there is no bloody way "skin" characters would be hard to make. That's the appeal many games roll with, and Sonic can do the same, it's basically like picking "Sonic but can fly, Sonic but can glide, Sonic but can use Chaos Powers" on the menu screen but given it's own character model for it instead. I mean, if you have to think about it, why would this be hard when the OC in Sonic Forces basically does exactly what I'm asking for? You get one based gameplay style with a different wispon to give yourself a different ability for a different run on a level. All of them gets you to the end of the stage the all the same, but you can do so in different ways via different routes, like in the classic styled games. I remember seeing so many fans wishing it was Tails that used the Wispon instead of some OC because they want the old cast to be playable again, and they are right. Sonic, much like Mario, can work just fine with other characters that play kinda like Mario does, as long as the changes aren't MANDATORY to beat a level, or the overall game, just a way to get you to play the game in a slightly different way. It worked in the past to the point people ask for these elements to come back again, why should it not come back when other series get around the problems to make it still work? Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to explain it although I'm half asleep right now so apologies if I said something confusing. Much better than halfchans text limit desu….
(19.09 KB 105x124 1490307782531.png)

>>13730 >E.g, Smash Bros. Many playable characters with 90% of them having unique moves and different behaviors, all under a similar "rule" of overall gameplay. That's a fighting game. Obviously they're all going to have the same controls and the same type of gameplay. Ask yourself: why is it so rare for 3D platformers to have alternate playable characters? Why did Super Mario 3D World's level design and mechanics take a hit in comparison to Galaxy or other 3D Mario games? There must be a reason. Something MUST be getting sacrificed when implementing alternate characters. >"Sonic but can fly, Sonic but can glide, Sonic but can use Chaos Powers" And why would you use Sonic in comparison to those? Sure you can go faster and maybe it's more rewarding to get good at him as opposed to Tails, but it's defeating the purpose of having challenge in your game if Tails or Knuckles can just fly over everything. In 2D, they will eventually hit a wall, but you don't have that solution in 3D, unless you seriously gimp the level design to accomodate every single one of those abilities, and that's going to limit what you can let Sonic do. Think about it: the reason Sonic 3 and Mania have such great level design for Sonic is because you can only go through those levels as Sonic. So the levels are designed SPECIFICALLY around his strengths and weaknesses. Knuckles has almost entirely different layouts, with only a few instances of even being allowed to go onto Sonic's path. And when he does, it's awkward. There's some jumps he can just barely make. Sure there's Tails, but Tails only exists for two reasons: an easy mode (in a time when difficulty options were uncommon) and cheap co-op (which doesn't work when you can quickly scroll each other off the screen). Having the former be the case would be a very archaic design choice. >Smash has clone fighters with differences only down to character skin (Daisy, Dark Samus, Chrom) and I'll be the first one to pick Daisy over Peach in a heart beat because she's better to me, like some would say about Shadow over Sonic, or Cream over Tails or something. Smash gets away with that because it's fucking Smash. Fighting games that use licensed characters are going to put "rule of cool" over anything else. Getting to play as your favorite characters is half the fun, regardless of anything unique they bring to the table. Soulcalibur II HD has Heihachi Mishima and Spawn, two characters that add far more variety and unique mechanics than Link, but nobody gives a shit about them. The Gamecube version has fucking LINK. Thus, it's the better version. You can't compete with that. 1/2
>>13730 >>13731 >In todays world, there is no bloody way "skin" characters would be hard to make. That's the appeal many games roll with, and Sonic can do the same. The appeal many games roll with today is "cosmetics". Being able to customize your character any way you want with a variety of different outfits. And I support Sonic having that, but not in the form of different characters. I just don't see it as anything other than a waste of resources only a small niche would actually care about. I keep imagining this Sonic game with a bunch of different characters with their own unique campaign, with unique storylines and level designs and mechanics and assets and music and cutscenes and animations and voice clips, and it just seems unrealistic. But if they're just alternate costumes with slightly different gameplay, then it not only seems like a waste, but it also asks questions that don't need to be asked. Let's say we decide to play as Amy in Sonic's campaign, once unlocked. What happens? Are the rules for getting an A rank different because of the different stats or mechanics? Does every character have their own A rank? Do you get something special for getting an A rank with every character? That would be really tedious if so, kinda like getting a gold flagpole with all 5 characters in 3D World. If there's a cutscene midway through or a boss, does the dialogue change? Do the camera angles/framing or animation change in a cutscene to account for different heights? Does the plot take into account these characters being playable at all? There would be a pretty weird disconnect if Sonic and Tails were in a cutscene, but when the boss starts you're playing as Amy. What happens if the character you're playing as is also an NPC? Does the NPC change to someone else or will it be a clone? Does the dialogue change when you talk to them? Would the game's difficulty be tied to these characters? Do you have to rescue Amy first, do you just talk to her and she joins your journey, or is she unlocked completely outside the story? What would this mean for Team Rose? Would it just not exist? What if Amy had her own campaign? Or is she just in modes outside the story? Wouldn't EVERY player need a good reason for wanting to play as Amy as opposed to Sonic, or vice-versa? Would there be a section in a level that encourages you to use Amy, making you sorry you picked Sonic in the first place? How would she be balanced for multiplayer, or online leaderboards? Could she be available in co-op? Could she follow Sonic like Tails? Or would Tails follow her? If there's co-op, does she have an ability she can use with Sonic like how Tails carries Sonic in the air? That would kill any idea for a boss like Marble Garden's where Tails carries him, unless he just shows up out of nowhere like when playing as Sonic alone, which would still require its own animations. These are not things you want to deal with when you're under a deadline, and you have a budget, and you have a team that may not feel like putting all of this shit in. And that's something I think many fangame idea guys struggle with: the concept of limits. 2/2
>And why would you use Sonic in comparison to those? Sonic's Drop Dash and Insta Shield + Elemental shields. Those are near perfect counters to any argument for using Sonic.
>>13733 Meant to link >>13731. I don't agree to both of the two of you all the way, but just wanted to point that out.

>>13950 I think the animation team is nowhere as "veteran" status as all the eastern animations out there is. Even though Mania Adventures and TSRO are nicely done, the comparison to say, Shantae: Half Genie Hero is likely the budget the team is allowed to work with. Just compare Sonic X to this, and I think for something like this, you'd need a far bigger budget and team to make something X tier again. For indies, it's honestly inspiring, just think if cartoons on CN or Nick was like this. I'd honestly wish I could thank the team for pushing so hard to get what they could do done.

Am I the only one that genuinely think Sonic is, slowly but surely, getting better as a series then people are making it out to be? Yeah, Forces happened, it was rushed, and it missed a lot of marks that not only made Boost games like Unleashed Day Time, Colors and Generations work, and, what made the Adventure era fun for story telling, but ultimately, it's nowhere as eyebrow raising, nor as poorly made, whereas the mid 2000s games got, and ultimately, made Sonic into the mess he's became known for since. Then ever since Unleashed, the only thing people hate is the fact it's NOT like the 2000s era anymore. Which, to me, must be the people that grew up on SA1/2 first, and just want that era of style of Sonic, back again. I can also blame Sonic X for this too. But besides that, objectively, Sonic's games are nowhere as poorly made anymore, by comparison to what was coming out in the mid 2000s, and its only on a subjective, nostalgic value, is where the hate for Modern Sonic is current regarded from I think. Boom and the movie shouldn't be indicators of the series quality because they aren't fully SEGA's ideas. Otherwise, we'd have to say Archie, the AoSTH/SatAM and Underground, or those European comics are an indicator of Sonic's quality. Maybe quality control in terms of consistency, sure, but they shouldn't be key elements because many other game series with non game media tend to have never been canon to the original source. Hell, even anime to manga share this difference as well. As kids, we just absorbed it all in and think it should all related together because humans are flawed like this, give or take. Anyways, I just think seeing >>13982, the effort to make TSR good on its own, even if isn't everyone's cup of tea, is honestly speaks more good for SEGA to me then not. At best, SEGA has Evening Star Studios and Sumo to help make Sonic games, same with Diimps if they can come back. At worse, SEGA is just confused right now, where to take Sonic. I really do hope they stop pandering to the fans at this point, and genuinely start fresh again and move on with new ideas and concepts. No more clinging on to the past. The old fans are actively holding the series back. Generations, Lost World, and Forces, could have been better just being unique (and for Forces, more dev time), instead of wasting the time to make references to Adventure, or add in Classic Sonic again. If we do, someday, get an Adventure remake, let it be one and done. Don't do SA2, or anything after. All you're doing is entitled old "bad" blood back into the series. The direction Tee Lopes, Taxman and Tyson has been doing with Sonic, both Classic and Modern, has proven itself a good direction to take, without it necessarily, feeling like retreaded old ground. With a bit of creativity, and good perspective of what works for Sonic objectively, Sonic can become good again, without relying on his past. It might not ever be "as good" as the 90s, or the 2000s again, but that doesn't matter. As long as he's consistent, and SEGA has faith with their product, Sonic can be good again, for everyone to agree on. /rant

>>13990 Bloomers are associated with "proper, ladylike" fashion. Like, what your grandmother or great-grandmother would've worn. That they're so frilly and loosely-fitted means they're popular for little girls to wear (or at least they used to. I'm not sure what common fashion is now). Amy doesn't seem like she'd be into that. She would wear either panties, boyshorts or bike shorts. Her Olympics outfit goes a long way towards fixing the issue.

>>13984 We're definitely not in another dark age like before, but I think what annoys a lot of people is the constant feeling that Sonic can be doing much better than it is right now. Seeing franchises like Mario & Zelda put some of their better titles to date probably has a lot of people scratching their heads as to why Sonic can't reach the same heights in some of his more recent 3D outings. And personally speaking, while the games are definitely more technically solid than the likes of Secret Rings or 06, I feel like the series should be aiming higher than just being better than that. Games like Mania are a great start overall, but SEGA still has a mountain to climb in regards to getting the Modern games where they need to be. >>13988 They could give her spandex like her Rio '16 Olympic games attire. Or skirt physics similar to her Winter 2012 skirt.
>>13991 >>13992 Olympicsmind
>>13992 >We're definitely not in another dark age like before, but I think what annoys a lot of people is the constant feeling that Sonic can be doing much better than it is right now. I understand this, and I get this, and with Mania happened, I can see this being possible. But the issue still is rooted with "what Sonic was" verses "what Sonic can be". Making a solid game is one thing for Sonic Team. But people genuinely are fighting between "Sonic needs to be classic era 100%" or "Sonic needs full SA2 kino to return" with no compromise in between. That's what's holding SEGA back. If they were to move on, start something fresh, and in the end, it was actually good content, would people, the old fans, actually move on with them? Or will they still cry and beg for an SA1 remake/SA3? Mario and Zelda never hit rock bottom like Sonic has, never. And would never ever in a million years, happen while Nintendo lives up to the standard they have for 50+ years. SEGA, for a lack of a better phrasing, doesn't have jack shit of a chance to be in Nintendo's shoes. They are no where as rich as they ever were when Sonic killed the stock market with Mario, nor do they have any of the talent left to even make a percentage of what was done during the 90s/early 2000s. Literally all of them are gone, with only like Iizuka, Jun Senoue and some others sprinkled in there, still remain, but not in the right seat, if at all anymore. Sonic needs new blood that has the skills, that has the passion. This is why Sonic cannot be what he once was, as of right now. It's been not enough time nor practice from SEGA's behalf, to make something consistent when it comes to Sonic right now. Consider that, only 5 years ago with Sonic Boom Fire and Ice, has Sonic ever gotten actual game delays to make sure games can be as passable as they possibly can. It's happen with Fire and Ice, Mania, and now TSR. And all of them, in varying degrees, has benefited from their delays. Mania would have looked far worse being released 5 months ahead of time, while TSR actually looks like they spent some time making it looks quite serviceable, even without some of the fan favorite content. Sonic in the 2000s would have been a godsend if they had what Modern Sonic has now, actual time spent to make the games as good as they can be. If SEGA keeps this up, and hire more competent game devs? Sonic might actually get back to his glory days again. But it's taking it's time, and the only thing we could do as fans, is criticize the rightfully bad, but actually support the content that actually tries and we can see the efforts, even if it's not as good as we'd expect, or, what we really wanted from the series.
>>13994 I think it speaks volumes that all we got about the latest Sonic game is that it's "in development". I think they're going to take their time with this one, just to have it ready for the 30th anniversary and knock it out of the park like Generations did. We are currently in a Sonic Renaissance.
