THE CONCERT STARTS IN JUST A BIT MORE THAN 6 HOURS >>24184 Shadow pls, don't get all edgy just because you're a youngfag. if things keep going this way this franchise will outlive at least some of us

>>24184 >>24185 Ah, yes, I thought that was just fanart but I just caught up with what you were referring to. I wish this had waited until tomorrow. Why does everyone keep trying to run away from Sonic and what he is instead of trying to give us more of what we already like? Isn't this the most retarded approach possible? At this point Sega has spent the majority of the last decade trying to bury Sonic and making him anew in different ways. For as much as they try to force people to follow their rules for the sake of brand strength everything is just such an incoherent disorganized mess.
>Sonic Studio creative director Kazuyuki Hoshino reportedly said there are plans to expand the Sonic brand in brand new ways. It included a project that will make Sonic a VTuber >Sonic is being converted into a VTUBER as part of a new project of a streaming program. https://archive.is/tt3aJ

I swear by the time it begins I'll lose internet or power or something else will happen.
>they skipped Colors completely >no Nega wisp armor NOOOOOOO
>>24192 they played it you baby
>>24193 They did technically skip the game, no bully! Crush40 and Ohtani are next it seems! I didn't know Masato Nakamura was such an eccentric character, that's awesome.
That Singer is a great match for Endless Possibility.

From Colors they played the main theme (which is actually fantastic), Aquarium Park, Starlight Carnival, Sweet Mountain, Tropical Resort, Planet Wisp, and then they went back to the ending of the main theme. I'm gonna need another symphony, with more tunes and blackjack and hookers.
>>24226 I think he meant Colors in general, not the specific song, considering you jumped the gun in complaining about them skipping the entire game

Iizuka did an interview and things go spicy >Looking back on the past 10 years I am very pleased we have been able to release titles that our fans have really enjoyed, like Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations and Sonic Mania. <Unfortunately we also had the Sonic Boom brand, started by the development and production team in America, come to an end after an unfortunate title release. To prevent that sort of thing from happening again, I made up my mind to move to America wew. There are some other interesting questions but unfortunately Iizuka wouldn't have any of that and just dodged all of them. https://archive.is/7P8nv

>>24236 I imagine they'll eventually get to that, though maybe they'll do something like the twitter takeovers that they've done in the west first to test the waters. Honestly the chats in the events have been really mild plus this seems to be JP only so that should limit the autism or at least its spread.

Solicits for IDW #45 came out and they're again doing a girls-focused arc >The ROAD TO #50 starts here! Enjoy a TEN-ISSUE long adventure leading up to the EPIC SHOWDOWN in milestone issue #50. >ROAD TRIP!!! The girls; Amy, Jewel, Tangle, and Belle, are heading off on a well-deserved camping trip. Between Dr. Eggman, Dr. Starline, and the Deadly Six, life has been a bit stressful, so they hope rest and relaxation will bring them some peace. Unfortunately… tensions are high and Amy’s fortune card readings leave everyone feeling confused. Can the girls extinguish the awkwardness before it burns out of control? Find out in “TRIAL BY FIRE,” part one by Evan Stanley. >Estimated release date: September 2021

>>24255 It always struck me as something ironic, but the IDW comics have taken it to a whole different level. Literally the whole run so far has been creating exaggerated suffering and leading to an unsatisfying resolution and even the new arc has started exactly with the same formula as well to my disappointment. I can't stop wondering if we didn't monkey paw it 6 years ago.

>>24264 Can't deny the resemblance but it doesn't match robuttnik's design close enough and it's otherwise too simple a design for me to believe it actually is inspired by it.
>>24265 What other Robotnik design has a red top, black bottom, and yellow plus with a circle in the middle? This has to be a reference to AoStH, it would be an incredible stroke of luck that they came to this conclusion by pure happenstance.
>>24266 >red top, black bottom I thought it looked like the bottom part was just in the dark earlier and it was just a red ball, but it's actually the right colors. They show better in >>24184. With the colors matching it looks much more like a real reference.

>>24275 Maybe it's talking about Midori? I don't know the original context though, so your guess could be right too.

>>24272 Well, welcome back in that case. I haven't been able to stop listening to the concert for the past few days. What part was your favorite? >That guy sucked for Endless Possibility I don't agree. The new guy has so much more inflection and nuance compared to the original, but I can see how that could be too many frilly effects for some. I also love just how good it sounds overall, I had a major bone to pick with OG Endless Possibility because it just sounds like it came from a 50kbps mp3 from the 90s. Can we agree that Crush40 completely aced Live and Learn?

Holy shit I almost forgot it's /sthg/'s birthday in 2 days.

Sonic Channel's story for next month was just published today and it involves Sonic and Rouge. Since I couldn't find a proper translation I translated it with deepl and pasted the translation in the original page. Since I remembered that I also couldn't find a translation for last month's story I did the same for Sonic and Shadow's story. Why are Shadow stories always the best /sthg/?
>>24312 I often forget Boom was even a thing, which saddens me because I thought it had great potential
>>24327 Now that I think about it, this would be an excellent moment to stock up on Boom merch because in a few years it'll be this rare part of the franchise that was only alive for a few years and everyone will want merch of it just because of how rare it is.

>yfw they cast a nig to voice Knuckles https://archive.is/WCUHk
>>24338 Knuckles is gonna sound cool as hell in the Sonic Movie sequel & I'm all for it
>>24338 Knuckles is basically the Mobian equivalent of a negro. >muh ancestors >low IQ >constantly tricked by the villain into attacking the ones trying to help him >rap music
>>24340 No, he's of Meso-American origins. That was the entire story-arc of SA1. So, Knuckles should be casted as a South American or Latino actor (If you want to be "racially" accurate). But, then again, I cannot see Elba faithfully recreating Knuckles.
>>24340 >muh ancestors Knuckles never really cared about his ancestry. SA1 makes this explicitly clear. >low IQ Except not. Knuckles is a bit gullible, but he's not dumb. >constantly tricked by the villain into attacking the ones trying to help him He was tricked a total of twice, and the second time Sonic wasn't trying to help him. >rap music In one game. And, like >>24341 pointed out, his entire people are based on Meso-American civilizations. Have you actually played the games, or are you some kind of secondary that somehow found their way here?
>>24339 Yeah, me too! Usually they put black people in casts for their talent and not for something petty like making a weak political statement at the cost of the product so I'm sure it'll be great. Besides Knux has a history of being voiced by black dudes so it's totally fitting and awesome.
>>24342 That's one way of looking at SA. The other way to look at is, aztecs robbed architecture from the ancient Echidna race.
(5.04 MB 1280x720 smb.mp4)

How did Super Monkey Ball ever get popular and how did it get such a following? It feels like a concept so dumb and simple that it would be too much so even for a mobile game.
>>24345 Because it's one of those easy to learn, hard to master games. If you want to get good at the game, which it expects you to do, you have to really understand how the physics work. Some levels ask you to pull some crazy maneuvers you aren't going to be able to do as a casual player.
(1.39 MB 1280x720 dumb.webm)

>>24342 >Except not. Knuckles is a bit gullible, but he's not dumb. I get what you're trying to say but at some point you have to admit it's been Sega's intention for years now to portray him as stupid, so when can you start saying that's what he is? Then again I think everyone lost a few IQ points along the way.
>>24342 Not only that, but even the Sonic Channel comics showed that Knuckles doesn't really have much sympathy for a lot of his ancestors when it came to their rampaging of Chao's & driving Chaos to destroy the world. >are you some kind of secondary that somehow found their way here? Posters like the one you're replying to tend to have no real interests outside of posting trash, so that's most likely the case >>24347 I think a lot of that can be put down to how the characters are portrayed in the West. In the JP versions of the game scripts, everyone comes off as a lot less flanderized & more "grounded," for lack of a better word.
(864.49 KB 760x530 sonic & knucklehead.png)

(775.93 KB 707x530 knucklehead adventure.png)

(633.55 KB 795x530 knucklehead battle.png)

>>24342 >He was tricked a total of twice I can think of three times off the top of my head.
>>24339 Literally kill yourself.
>>24347 Yes, because, as we know, a completely isolated, short-lived spin-off series that has no bearing on the primary canon is representative of the qualities of the main characters in the games and Sega's intentions with them.
(97.57 KB 490x713 blue arms are canon.jpg)

>>24352 Yes, I'd think that since they did a new series that didn't need to have ties to the previous ones they would have pushed the characters in the direction they wanted to take them, but in any case I used that as an example because it was very graphic, them making Knuckles an idiot I think dates back to like Sonic X or something.
(93.04 KB 1920x1080 BLUE ARMS.jpg)

(1.27 MB 1680x1050 gens blue.png)

>>24351 Literally cry about it >>24354 Knuckles gullible nature (that's usually a byproduct of his lack of experience dealing with people outside of Angel Island) has been overemphasized in Western takes on the character since Sonic X, yeah. It really can't be overstated just how much that series influenced how people over here portrayed the Sonic cast, tbh.

The Zombot arc in IDW Sonic was one of the best arcs in any Sonic comic and could've easily been made into the plot for a mainline game with the characterization (besides Shadow), tone, moral and philosophical themes, making it great. Change my mind.
>>24374 I think they should make it into a Sonic game.
>>24374 The Zombot arc was incredibly drawn out with a rushed and unsatisfying ending. It was also way too dour for a Sonic story, having nothing but downer moments up until the very end. I have no problem with a Sonic plot being more serious and dramatic, but it can't just be shitty moment after shitty moment.
real shitpost hours in here go on
>>24365 It's dropped! https://yewtu.be/7wM-IJ9xV8Y What did you think of it? Personally even though they're clearly doing these to help promote (e.g. advertise) the games they release I think they leaned way too much to that side for this one to the detriment of the animation, and I think because of it this won't end up being neither a good advertisement nor a good animation in its own right, which is sad because I really love Sonic animations so I hope I'm proven wrong so that we can keep getting more. I really liked Tails' voice in this though.
>>24376 The tone is the best part of the arc. While it is on the depressing side for Sonic stories to tell. It does still treat the situation as a serious thing that the heroes have to fight the odds against, rather than just shouting Baldy Mcnosehair at it to get upvotes which is what most Sonic writing has been since after 06 bombed.
>>24379 I found the writing to be unfortunately as juvenile as the game it's advertising, which I guess kudos to them for staying perfectly in line with what they're selling. Still, I found every bit with Sonic and Tails to be as annoying as they are in Colors itself. >>24380 Being the opposite of one bad thing does not make it a good thing. It went way too far in the other direction that the games have been going, and became a slog to read through as a consequence. It started getting predictable, which is never a good thing. It never did anything real interesting with its premise, it just went "oh look, a major character got infected. Oh look, the heroes failed to solve the problem. Isn't this sad and dramatic?" It got stale quickly, and then they wrapped it up by bringing in the bargain bin Koopa Kids that no one likes and then having the chaos emeralds magically fix everything with no real consequences whatsoever. It was a typical zombie story played entirely straight with no interesting divergences until the very end, an end that was ultimately unsatisfying and lacking in long-term impact.
>>24381 When I first read through the Zombot arc, most of it was already available so I was able to speed read it. I think that made it good for me as the events felt more compact rather than being drawn out for months. As for the tone and "drama". Something either at SA2 or in between SA2 and Shadow the Hedgehog should be how Sonic stories are written. Shit is taken seriously no matter how campy/cheesy it might be and there is an actual threat. Either that threat is more similar to the Zombot threat where shit is getting constantly fucked left and right, or it's more of a neo metal sonic from the first IDW arc or the story of SA2 where shit is still serious but the characters are still able to stay upbeat about it to get the job done. That's how Sonic games and comics should be written and I think the zombot arc fits in well.
>>24379 Holy shit they replaced Tails' VA in this. Although it sounded a bit different I didn't think it was a change of that magnitude, the tone of the voice is almost exactly the same and it totally fooled me.

I liked their personalities and more fleshed out stories.
>>24390 > I'm curious about how many covers featured exclusively OCs in the history of Sonic comics. IIRC, the three issue Princess Sally comic from WAY back in the early 90's. >When you look at things it really feels like Sega has something against the modern cast. I think it has something to do with the fact that Sega doesn't know what it wants to do with Sonic. Or even caring about why people should be interested in Sonic beyond his name. For example, when was the last time Sega actually released a compilation of Sonic games, specifically? From what I've seen on SonicRetro, the last compilation was Sonic Classic Collection, on the DS, released back in 2010, that only contained Sonic 1-3&K. Since then, either the games have been released as a part of the larger "Sega Mega Drive" collections, or was part of the official fan-project that was Sonic Mania. Part of the reason why no one gives a damn about Sonic anymore, or even know who or what he is, has to do with the fact that no one has actually bothered to pull everything back and point at what made the franchise that people liked.
>>24391 >IIRC, the three issue Princess Sally comic from WAY back in the early 90's. That makes sense, Sally somehow got to be a pretty big deal back then. But I imagine it's happened after that too, no way it didn't in 300+ issues. >I think it has something to do with the fact that Sega doesn't know what it wants to do with Sonic Yeah, that goes without saying. It's funny because their lack of knowing where to take Sonic has meant that they decided to make an incoherent mess of games that never build up from one another and have very little in common as a way to not have to commit to anything in particular, but it's come to a point where they feel the need to have even more leeway and make even more radical changes every other year. At this point every major production from the past decade (Boom, Forces, and the movie) has had a different design, tone, art style, and even voice actors (except for Boom and Forces, but now they've changed them yet again). >compilation of Sonic games Does that really make a difference? I've never really cared about those compilations at all. What do they have of special that you can't get just getting the games individually? In any case they were preparing another compilation with remasters from Sonic 1 through CD for the 31st 30th anniversary so I guess that's something that can be crossed out. In this case however these are actually pretty cool because it's not just a compilation of the old games and instead includes legit remasters which are really needed to make the old games more accessible, so I definitely understand the need. >Part of the reason why no one gives a damn about Sonic anymore, or even know who or what he is, has to do with the fact that no one has actually bothered to pull everything back and point at what made the franchise that people liked. I think part of the reason for that is that they just can't deliver things like they did before for whatever reason, and also honestly lots of the 3D games that people hold dear and made Sonic a beloved franchise didn't really age well at all, so even if they tried to make more of that it probably would suck and would make a lot of fans frustrated. I think they know this and that's the reason they haven't tried their hand at another Adventure game or a similar concept. At the same time I think they're just looking for whatever will make them some money so they're doing all these desperate attempts at rewriting everything, and I think the moment they find something that works they'll just take it, even if it has nothing to do with what they had so far and would tear the fanbase up even more, so this is bound to get worse.

All the games in one place for one to play. Seriously, why inconvenience new players by requiring them to buy EVERY Sonic game individually, especially if you want to introduce them to the series? As of right now, if a player wants to have the most "complete" Sonic experience, as far as an intro, they have two options: <Buy a PS2 (Or a PS2 compatible PS3), Mega Collection Plus and Gems Collection OR... <Buy a GC/Wii, Mega Collection, Gems Collection, and SA1' If you follow either of those two courses of action, you will have every single Sonic game made during the 90's, with the sole exception of Chaotix and the SegaSonic arcade games. From there, however, your options are all over the place: <Have to buy all five of the GBA games <Have to buy the two DS games <Have to buy the two PSP games <Have to buy the remaining 5 GC/PS2 games <Have to buy the 7 360 games <Have to buy the 5 Wii games <Have to buy the 8 PC games And, those remaining four bullets have some crossover, so the number of games needed to acquire can be far lower, but goes to demonstrate how insane this all is. To put it simply, you have to buy over two dozen games, individually if you want to "understand" Sonic; how he started, evolved, and why the games have become a directionless husk. Why not compound nearly all of that into one big collection, that players have to buy ONCE, that has every single game to bring players up to speed? >In any case they were preparing another compilation with remasters from Sonic 1 through CD for the 31st 30th anniversary so I guess that's something that can be crossed out. Just saw that, and it's still going to be inferior to the bundle of Mega Collection (Plus) and Gems Collection from 15-20 years ago. >In this case however these are actually pretty cool because it's not just a compilation of the old games and instead includes legit remasters which are really needed to make the old games more accessible What's "inaccessible" about the games right now? All they needed was the option apply a screen filter to give players the "CRT experience" if they want it. >also honestly lots of the 3D games that people hold dear and made Sonic a beloved franchise didn't really age well at all SA1 and 2 play just fine; Heroes and Shadow, however, are slightly broken from the start; Sonic '06 is completely broken; and everything afterwards is basically when the "dark ages" began. >so even if they tried to make more of that it probably would suck and would make a lot of fans frustrated So, it would be a casual filter for all the brain-dead retards who cannot complete a game unless it is played for them. Why are today's players far more stupid than I was when I was 8 years old? >At the same time I think they're just looking for whatever will make them some money so they're doing all these desperate attempts at rewriting everything, and I think the moment they find something that works they'll just take it, even if it has nothing to do with what they had so far and would tear the fanbase up even more, so this is bound to get worse. So, they're following the typical AAA model of constantly appealing to the continually migrating herd of normalfags who only consume never produce, which is a fruitless endeavor that never makes any company money unless they are smart enough to know to quit while they are ahead, meanwhile leaving their fans behind and jaded and ultimately hating the company for not giving them more of what they wanted (Especially when the fans are the ones that built the franchise in the first place, because they're the ones who spent their money buying the games).

>>24393 >>24394 Damn, good job. That's a really tiny amount everything considered. >All the games in one place for one to play. Okay, that's a good point. It is more convenient. >why inconvenience new players by requiring them to buy EVERY Sonic game individually I don't think even most fans have played every Sonic game or even tried to. I think it may even be counter productive to give a new player a compilation with literally everything because they may either not know where to begin or what path to follow or they may try to pick up a not so great game and get frustrated and then forget about the whole thing. I think the new compilation will be a great addition because it puts the best front and center in a way that is much more comfortable to just pick up and play. Hopefully Sega played their cards right and will be able to use the remasters in new collections with more titles later on, but considering how late they're arriving with this already I guess it's good they didn't include more games, lol. What game pre SA1 do you think should be the next to get a remaster /fast/? >Just saw that, and it's still going to be inferior to the bundle of Mega Collection (Plus) and Gems Collection from 15-20 years ago. I wouldn't call it inferior to the Gems collection since that collection is for the most part Game Gear games, which are nowhere near as popular and as essential as the Genesis games. Mega collection did have the trilogy and then some more games, however the new collection has CD which I think is, again, a lot more popular and essential than any of the other games it has. Then there's the fact that the games in thew new collection are remasters, which makes me more excited than Sonic Spinball or the Game Gear games and I think would give someone new a much better impression of the series. >What's "inaccessible" about the games right now? All they needed was the option apply a screen filter to give players the "CRT experience" if they want it. I haven't played any of the collections, so I had to go get each game individually (and also the BIOS files I think), then fiddle with the emulator and have it pick up my controller, and ultimately all you get is a tiny square screen that's like 320x240 or some shit that at most you can try a bunch of workarounds to extend. And that's okay for me because I'm not a fag, I know what I'm doing, and I'm a fan but having something that's easier and more comfortable to play would be great. >SA1 and 2 play just fine I want to say that SA1 is fine because I had fun with it but can you seriously say that fishing and emerald hunting aged well? Do you think something like that would be well received these days? Hell, emerald hunting stages could take as long as werehog stages, specially in SA2, but with a gameplay style that is even less engaging. SA2 is much more frustrating because it still has shit parts but now they incorporated stuff like rail grinding in the Sonic sections which was finicky as hell. Overall despite how much of a staple game it is for the franchise it's not great. Honestly they're both less than stellar games compared to what you'd expect from a franchise that went on for so long and the renown they have, and they're still some of the better games there are. >and everything afterwards is basically when the "dark ages" began. Did you just say the dark ages began after 06? >So, it would be a casual filter for all the brain-dead retards who cannot complete a game unless it is played for them. No, what I was saying is Sonic Team would create a huge turd with hype through the roof because of saying they're going back to the roots/renown from the name/it's what a lot of people have been waiting for/other reasons and it'll crash and burn the fanbase because everyone is still waiting ever since gens for a serviceable game. I think that's what they've been trying to do and the way they'll go. I think they were just throwing stuff against the wall hoping something would strike gold and fix everything and now that the movie has made hundreds of millions in profit they'll turn their attention to that. I think that will cause a local maxima of profits because of the huge exposition that comes with it, and they'll they'll follow that vein at the cost of ostracizing their fanbase, eventually ending with less profits than they had, but the fanbase is huge, established, and stubborn so it'll take years out of sheer inertia. We'll see, lots of conclusions could have been made when Boom came into existence and look how that turned out.

>>24406 >I don't think even most fans have played every Sonic game or even tried to. Have you ever considered that's the reason why Sonic is in the gutter? From the first game in 1991 to Sonic Rivals at the end of 2007, the ENTIRE series is one huge overaching story, with every single game in it canon and adding on a new chapter. If you haven't even taken a crack at half of them, and have only played the "best" ones, then you're missing out on majority of the story of the games. And, it's a wonder why people don't understand Sonic. >I think it may even be counter productive to give a new player a compilation with literally everything because they may either not know where to begin or what path to follow Why is it so hard to just start at the beginning and play in order of release? Or, if they did do a "master collection", divide everything up by eras (Genesis, Game Gear, Dreamcast, HD, etc.) so that you can go straight to the types of games you want. > I think the new compilation will be a great addition because it puts the best front and center in a way that is much more comfortable to just pick up and play. But, the new compilation is quite literally Sonic Classic Collection on the DS with the addition of Sonic CD. And, it's not the "best" Sonic games "front and center", it's just the Genesis games that they're rereleasing for the second dozenth time. >I wouldn't call it inferior to the Gems collection since that collection is for the most part Game Gear games And Sonic CD, and Sonic The Fighters, and Sonic R, and an entire gallery with videos and images that are rarely ever seen (Including the full versions of all of the Genesis games). >Then there's the fact that the games in thew new collection are remasters It's the same games as was released 30 years ago. From what I've been told, the only addition that the "remasters" have added is a widescreen hack and a soundtrack change. >which makes me more excited than Sonic Spinball or the Game Gear games and I think would give someone new a much better impression of the series. Let me get this straight: <Releasing the same four games for the 20th time > having a game compilation with over 20-30 games to play >I haven't played any of the collections And, that goes to show. >I had to go get each game individually (and also the BIOS files I think), then fiddle with the emulator and have it pick up my controller, and ultimately all you get is a tiny square screen that's like 320x240 What stupid piece of shit emulator did you use? You can runaround the net and find pre-installed versions of Kega Fusion that auto-start with whatever game you wish and zero issues. >but having something that's easier and more comfortable to play would be great Which is already possible with the dozens of collections that already exist. I already pointed out that all you need for nearly all of the "original" games is a PS2 or GC and 2-3 games. >can you seriously say that fishing and emerald hunting aged well? Do you think something like that would be well received these days? I don't see why not when people didn't have an issue when the game came out back in 1999, and again in 2003. And, if people bitch and moan about it, then I can dismiss it as "unjust criticism" like whenever people write off my views about Half-Life being a superficial piece of shit that is only considered "brilliant" because the "master race" had never played a JRPG. And, that's still receiving "fan remasters" to this very day despite majority of the game being nothing but fluff. >Hell, emerald hunting stages could take as long as werehog stages, specially in SA2, but with a gameplay style that is even less engaging. How retarded do you have to be to not understand how a radar works? >SA2 is much more frustrating because it still has shit parts but now they incorporated stuff like rail grinding in the Sonic sections which was finicky as hell. Grinding the rails was the best part of SA2 and Heroes, and it's been the biggest shame that they nerfed it starting with Shadow. >Honestly they're both less than stellar games compared to what you'd expect from a franchise that went on for so long and the renown they have Oh dear Lord, 'ARE YOU ONE OF THE BRAIN DEAD IDIOTS SPOUTING THE MEME THAT "SONIC WAS 'NEVER' GOOD''"? >Did you just say the dark ages began after 06? There's a lot of Sonic games no one cares about and in some cases all people care about in some games is just one meme. >And, it's not the "best" Sonic games "front and center", it's just the Genesis games that they're rereleasing for the second dozenth time. They mentioned there were going to be more changes too, so we'll see. >Releasing the same four games for the 20th time > having a game compilation with over 20-30 games to play That has nothing to do with what I said, which was that releasing polished and improved versions of the most memorable and well received games would leave someone with a better impression of the series than a compilation just being inflated with games like Sonic Spinball. Like it or not out of those 20-30 games no one wants to play 60% of them, not that any compilation actually has 30 Sonic games. You can runaround the net and find pre-installed versions of Kega Fusion that auto-start with whatever game you wish and zero issues. >downloading jerry rigged emulators from random sites for the sake of convenience no way fag. No, but not everything is great either. It's pointless to discuss it with you because you won't even admit fishing was shit but when everyone recognizes that whole parts of the games are boring as hell and have issues you normally wouldn't call that game stellar. >You just described what their current model of advertising is for EVERY Sonic game since Sonic 4. >>24418 >I would think Sonic is in the gutter because of Sega not being able to deliver a fun Sonic experience more often than not. In other words, the games that they do "care" about is only in a superficial manner, with no respect or interest in the source material. >What would you say are the best 3 (classic) Sonic games? 3&K, CD, and Chaos; with honorable mention to Triple Trouble and Sonic 2. >I think they run at 60FPS The games already ran at 60 FPS. Frame rate didn't matter until true 3D entered the scene. Have you noticed how older games, when they load too much, slow down rather than become a slide show? >That has nothing to do with what I said, which was that releasing polished and improved versions of the most memorable and well received games would leave someone with a better impression of the series than a compilation just being inflated with games like Sonic Spinball Yet, Sonic Generations had a couple levels dedicated to Sonic '06. >Like it or not out of those 20-30 games no one wants to play 60% of them And, less than 10% of console owners used backwards compatibility when the system allows it, yet here are. >You seem to put all the weight in the sheer number of games and not in how much fun you can get out of those games. Yes because, even from a marketing standpoint, having more content available increases the amount of people interested in a product. If you're going to include a finite amount of said content, you better make damn sure that you go over everything with a fine-tooth comb that it will give more than enough players bang for their buck. And, given what's offered with the upcoming compilation, I don't see that being the case since it's going to either be on par with Classic Collection on the DS or inferior to Mega Collection on the PS2/GC. To put your argument another way, people had the option of buying the Wii U with a limited library, but extremely well made video games for those that were on the console; or buying an Xbone/PS4 with hundreds of games, overwhelming majority being trash, and only a fraction being of excellent titles. >Also that's not going to do much for the low resolution the device they're emulating use. Even the remasters use the same "pixel graphics" as the games did 30 years ago, so what's the actual point you're trying to make? >you won't even admit fishing was shit What was shit about it? <It didn't belong in the game! Like fishing doesn't belong in Zelda? >when everyone recognizes that whole parts of the games are boring as hell and have issues you normally wouldn't call that game stellar The only real "issues" I had with SA1, from what I can remember, was just getting lost in the open-world. But, all that was solved by having Tikal and the TV monitors dropping hints on where to go. >What was the last game that was seriously hyped outside of Mania, even? Forces as it was suppose to be a "return to form" for the storytelling; coming from writers that don't understand that Sonic is a Dragon Ball rip-off, with a knock-off Mickey Mouse as the protagonist, and a fat Teddy Roosevelt as the villain.

>>24418 >>24424 Also, here's another suggestion. If Sega really insists on only showing people the "good stuff", why don't they make a comic/movie/series/etc. that detailing the overarching saga of the games to help fill in the blanks for the titles not present? It would certainly would help bring everyone up to speed. For those too lazy to actually get good at the games.

I wouldn't say they are impatient though, there was plenty of time to develop Forces and they wasted it. >Dragon Ball, MCU, The Lord of the Rings I'm not a fan of any of those series so I wouldn't know but I'm gonna venture a guess and say both that the content you mentioned isn't irrelevant and also that outside of some exceptions they likely have a higher standard of quality than Sonic. >3&K, CD, and Chaos; with honorable mention to Triple Trouble and Sonic 2. Well the new compilation has 3&K and CD and Sonic 2 too. I think that fits what I said pretty well, specially since your pick of Sonic Chaos is probably one in a million. >The games already ran at 60 FPS That's impossible since TV sets never ran at 60FPS. >Yes because, even from a marketing standpoint, having more content available increases the amount of people interested in a product I think that's a rather broad statement and I can't imagine it applying in cases where people don't care about something which I believe it to be the case here. I also think that from a marketing standpoint the Taxman remakes have a very solid reputation and will make people excited so they'll be easy to market and will do well. We'll have to see how it actually goes, I guess at some point next year Sega will release their fiscal reports and we'll get some info. >I don't see that being the case since it's going to either be on par with Classic Collection on the DS or inferior to Mega Collection on the PS2/GC. You keep mentioning collections on really old consoles and I cannot imagine many people having and using those consoles regularly these days. It kind of defeats the purpose if people have to source a 20 year old console and then a disc that's no longer made to get a collection working that's supposed to make it easier for them to pick up the games. Kinda funny but I was looking for some information on one of the collections and got to an official Sega page, but the page was loading almost completely empty. I brought up the source code of the page and it was trying to embeded a flash file which was the only thing on the page, kek. I wonder what other things they've forgotten that they're hosting and if some of them are ultra vulnerable by now and will eventually come back to bite them in the ass for being careless. >Even the remasters use the same "pixel graphics" as the games did 30 years ago, so what's the actual point you're trying to make? The sprites back then were designed for 320x240 screens or whatever tiny resolution the Genesis handled, and if you try to stretch them and filter them it looks like shit. That can't be the assumption of something designed to run on modern hardware. >What was shit about it? It was boring, slow, had nothing to do with platforming or Sonic, and it didn't belong in the game >Forces Lots of people felt disappointed when they saw Classic in the trailer, but it's true that there was a lot of hype back then. I was super hyped myself back when they teased it at the 25th anniversary party now that I remember, but really all of that waned with the upcoming trailers and I didn't end up playing it until last year actually. >webm pic related. >>24425 Because Sega is completely averse to taking risks. That's why they try to keep it safe with the games and have each one be something completely self contained and separate from one another and why the movie was just licensed from them and they were told to shut the fuck up when they said they didn't agree with Paramount's (first?) Sonic redesign. They would never sink $90 million on a movie (or anything else for that matter). Similarly with the upcoming animated show, it was licensed to Netflix and I'm going to be surprised if we don't see a repeat of certain things. Personally I think it's a great idea to do a Sonic series or movie because Sonic lends itself very well to the format and because it could have a lot of stuff people love and usually cannot get from the games nowadays. However personally I'm rather tired of retelling stories, I really think the series needs to elaborate and create new stuff rather than keep rehashing. It kind of feels like a business model of its own to be honest, what Sega does with Sonic. People want to make something, be it a game or a movie or a show, and Sega comes in and says "hey, make it with this name and make it have more or less a plot like this and it'll sell". It's like an "IP-as-a-service" kind of deal. It happened with Rise of Lyric (which was theorized to be a different game and then adapted to be a Sonic game), it happened with the movie, and it'll likely happen with the Netflix show.
>>24430 >also that outside of some exceptions they likely have a higher standard of quality than Sonic. With the sole exception of TLotR, not really. > That's impossible since TV sets never ran at 60FPS. 60Hz is a different measurment than 60FPS. Frame rate is tied to the amount of images per second that a device is capable of outputting. Hertz (Hz) is the amount of images per second that a device is capable of displaying. For example, if you played F-Zero X on a 30 Hz television, despite the game being programmed to run at 60 FPS, you would only see the game played at 30 FPS due to it being a 30Hz TV set. In addition, like I said, frame rate wasn't really a concept at the time because, with the way the games were programmed, the only "frames" present was the sprite animations programmed into the game, but the game is still running at a smooth pace in regards to movemeny without interrupting the image being seen. Test it out on Sonic 1 (The original version) when you lose 100 rings and you'll see. > You keep mentioning collections on really old consoles But, they're not that old. Hell, I just bought myself a PSP back in 2019. And, my GameCube is still kicking. > I cannot imagine many people having and using those consoles regularly these days. The 3DS, PS3, and Wii are backwards compatible. > It kind of defeats the purpose if people have to source a 20 year old console and then a disc that's no longer made to get a collection working that's supposed to make it easier for them to pick up the games. That's the irony, though. Some of the best game collections are on the PS2, PSP, and even a few on the PS1/Saturn. Almost none of them have been surpassed or remade for newer systems. > It was boring, slow That's IRL fishing in a nutshell. > However personally I'm rather tired of retelling stories, I really think the series needs to elaborate and create new stuff rather than keep rehashing. Part of the problem is that they keep focussing on the Genesis trilogy and maybe Sonic CD. There are a dozen other games that take place between Sonic 1 and Sonic Adventure (And Tail's Adventure taking place prior) that are their own unique stories. And, AFAIK, the only time those stories were ever adapted was under Archie back in the 90's (Except for that one SU arc). At that point, the entire Sonic series should probably be written off as something akin to the Tezuka-metaverse.

It seems it was a bit of a rocky start for Colors Ultimate with several issues reported including save file corruption. Some fag created the rumor that there were severe graphic issues like in webm related but it turned out he was running it on an emulator. Then some other people reproduced the issue on actual hardware, although it seems it's not so easy to get the game to behave like that. I hope it's better than what people are making it out to be but it seems pretty bad. Even though this port wasn't developed by Sega I wonder what this outcome says about their next game and their usual rhetoric of taking their time with games to make them properly and all that.
>>24449 I would give him some more distinguishing features, specially around the face/head. I dig the hair covering the eyes because I think it looks cute and I don't remember a lot of characters doing that but he looks a bit bare and monotonous otherwise. Perhaps some kind of hair accessory but I feel that would be too girly. I also don't like the yellow straps, they stick out like a sore thumb. With that emo hair he'd get Zor or some other deadly six loser after him in no time.

>>24459 The Japanese version of Colors has a different script from the English version, and some names are different. Eggman's Interstellar Amusement Park is "Egg Planet Park" in Japan. The Final Color Blaster is "Final Prism Blaster" in Japan as well. Here's a translation of the Japanese cutscenes if you're interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uCGTux8lBI
>>24460 >Eggman's Interstellar Amusement Park is "Egg Planet Park" in Japan. The Final Color Blaster is "Final Prism Blaster" in Japan as well. That's nowhere near as cool. I guess it's the price to pay for no baldy mcnosehair. >Here's a translation of the Japanese cutscenes if you're interested: I remember someone saying at some point that the script for Colors in Japanese was totally different and actually okay but it actually seems to be very similar, which is kinda disappointing. Other than that Japanese Sonic a cute. I hate that the subtitles don't show when you download the videos from youtube otherwise I'd make some cute webms.
>>24463 Colors Wii's English script was written first and the script was modified/localized for the Japanese region, but aside from some naming differences and more Japanese-esque humor, the story is pretty much the same. The DS version of Colors is the better game and has a better story, imo, but even then, the story isn't particularly interesting there either. Seeing characters other than Sonic and Tails show up during the missions is pretty nice, though. Colors' story to me always felt more like a light-hearted filler episode/arc from an anime that acts a breather from the more intense stories, kinda.
>>24464 >Colors Wii's English script was written first and the script was modified/localized for the Japanese region I can definitely see that now. The other theory also made sense because I played Colors with Japanese voices and English subtitles and the dialog clearly didn't match. >Seeing characters other than Sonic and Tails show up Oh yeah, I think Blaze showed up? Also that thing with the mother wisp. You'd think that if they were thinking of bringing up important characters and plot points like that they'd do it in the more important game. I had completely forgotten Colors DS even existed honestly, I should give it a play!

Meant to upload this on Sonic's birthday but found myself engrossed in playing all the games up to Generations on the 23rd and the filesize itself is just over the file limiy, apparently. When I played SA2B on his birthday before reaching Sonic 1 and Generations, my Shadow chao ended up reincarnating after playing Cannon's Core in the Last Story. Pretty funny how it fit in with that and Shadow's own role in the story. Like a little nod or sign of what was to come.

So it turns out Ian is involved in the upcoming Sonic Netflix show https://archive.md/B0G4W What are your thoughts if it turns out he's writing for the show? A few years ago I would have been excited but I'm not so sure now. I'm not a huge fan of IDW Sonic's writing although I get the feeling that's more of a direction issue, but either way that's for sure going to be a problem with this production too.
>>24517 Ian is only good at certain types of writing. When he has a rich, continuous history of ideas and plotlines to build off of, he can produce some good things. He understood exactly what to do to rescue Archie from the shitshow it had become, and he continually turned bad/annoying ideas and characters into things that were far more palatable. But whenever he has to write something simpler or more self-contained, it tends to fall flat. Whatever it is, it usually doesn't really satisfy, no matter if it’s trying to be adventurous, exciting or comedic. I've failed to get into IDW Sonic twice, because it starts off feeling empty and vapid somehow. Of course, it didn't help that the entire first year went: Nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, HUGE STAKES. If he writes an episode of Prime, and it's not script edited too heavily, I expect it to be similar to his work on Boom: It will be decent, but something about it will feel subtly off, compared to the other episodes.
>>24518 >I expect it to be similar to his work on Boom: It will be decent, but something about it will feel subtly off, compared to the other episodes. I didn't really get the feeling something was off in his episode. Besides IDW, do you have any other examples where he's done what you describe? I think he started a comic with ABT, did you happen to read it and is it like that as well?
(818.06 KB 650x1024 20.jpg)

(1.30 MB 1986x3056 Sonic Boom 003-009.jpg)

>>24519 I haven’t been following him closely, so I don’t know whatever comic you’re talking about. I don’t think there are any examples that are as obvious or egregious as IDW’s opening. What I mean is that when he tries to write stories that are too simple, he tends to do things that don’t feel quite right, or include jokes or character interactions that fall flat. They’re not necessarily things that leap out at you. Most of the time, it’s just a vague sense that something isn’t working, or that it isn’t as good as it should be. There’s a little bit of this in the early issues of the Archie reboot as well, like when Ixis Naugus gets scared over nothing and fucks off. After a lengthy plotline that had been building and building for years, that’s not a satisfying conclusion. I know Ian was forced into the reboot, but come on: Either use him properly, or leave that story behind completely. Even if you’re trying to simplify and take a back-to-basics approach, don’t half-ass a resolution to something like that. Now, I’m going off a shaky memory, because I haven’t read Archie Sonic much in years. It’s possible I’m completely off the mark here. But the first time I recall really noticing this was the Genesis arc. I’m skimming through the first part right now, and it is very much not a good story. Nothing about it feels substantial. It’s like the plot is a series of bullet points, and they’re not fleshed out at all. So much in this issue just happens, without buildup, drama, or even enough character interaction to warrant it. Sonic meets Snively and defeats him within four pages. Then he immediately meets Sally and the others, and decides to join up with them, within two pages. And then they go to Marble Zone, where Sally suddenly develops the ability to speak Flicky. There’s barely a story here, and almost everything seems like a plot contrivance. I was really gungho about Ian’s Archie writing at the time, and even I couldn’t help thinking, “Man, this is shit.” On the opposite end of the spectrum, you have the Boom comic, which is his attempt to do pure comedy. I would say it’s reasonably successful, but it’s not his forte. He’s a writer who can do jokes, not a comedy writer. It sometimes felt to me like he was out of his depth, and struggling to keep cracking jokes just because he knew he needed to. (Second pic related.) IDW’s opening is pure characterization, with a bit of action and no plot. The Boom comics are pure comedy, with a bit of action and no plot. Genesis is almost pure plot and action, with a bit of characterization, but no real, substantial story. When he was at his prime with Archie, he tended to balance all of these elements very well. When he tries to be simple, he tends to lean too heavily in one or two directions, and it exposes weaknesses. I think Ian is a “jack of all trades, master of none” kind of writer. He’s good all around, but no one specific facet of his writing is excellent, and he needs that balance in order to produce his best work. And when it comes to his Boom episodes, I really just mean that you can tell the difference between his style of comedy and the regular writers’. The character of Og seems like a very Flynn idea: He looked at a discarded concept, saw potential, and decided to explore it further. But for reasons I can’t quite explain, the hippie characterization also feels to me like it’s more Ian’s sense of humour than Boom’s. Of course, I haven’t seen that episode for ages either, so it’s possible I was looking out for things like that.
>>24520 IDW's first four issues were a special introduction thing that were all released in a single month. After that I thought it got a lot better, up to the end of the thing with Metal Sonic. I'd go so far as to say that might be my favorite Sonic comic story ever. After that it slowly dropped off, and by the Metal Virus arc finally ended, it was pretty meh. The stuff after didn't get better.
>>24520 Well, the Genesis stuff specifically had to get through two games in four issues. There really wasn't much room to do build up, drama, or a ton of character interaction.
>>24522 Flynn isn't very good at adapting things. He just wants to write more stories with his OCs, just like the stereotypical Sonicfag the internet has made fun of for like 15 years now. He just happens to be slightly better at it than the rest of them.
>>24521 I’m not only talking about the first four issues. Although they weren’t really bad, even the ones where Shadow and Whisper were introduced had bits that felt weak or boring to me. And then, suddenly, you’re supposed to be invested in massive stakes and an epic battle, and I just found myself completely unable to care. I tried picking it back up again, and got as far as some of the early Starline/Metal Virus stuff, but it simply felt lifeless for some reason. From what you're saying, I probably wouldn't feel much differently about what comes later. Maybe I'm just too used to Archie, and expected it to be the same way right off the bat. >>24522 I get what you’re saying, but there actually was a lot of character interaction. I just think it was handled clumsily. There are definitely areas where you could have cut out a sequence or two, and used the space you saved to flesh out the parts that needed it.
>>24523 >Flynn isn't very good at adapting things. He just wants to write more stories with his OCs I've always gotten the feeling people liked his adaptations of e.g. old characters.
>>24525 Yeah, he's pretty good at the characters, most of the time, but not at adapting particular stories. And even when he is doing original stories, which is the vast majority of the time, he likes making up new OCs to be the focus of stories, instead of making stories about the characters from the works he is supposed to be adapting. Not every time, because he can certainly do well with the regular characters, but he can very rarely resist the urge to slap his OCs front and center.

WHERE'S THE GAME TRAILER
So here it is, the trailer for Sonic's 30 31st anniversary game. They actually really seemed to have gone for an open world game and it gives me serious vibes of Rise of Lyric. It looks like a Unity game with the lightning all fucked up. Did they really just trash the Hedgehog Engine 2 after the mess they made with Forces in order to develop it? I guess the tower we see is the tower the faggot in pic related was talking about back in January.

But there is more to this technology than he realizes, and unintended consequences immediately come to bear. Sonic must race against time to discover the truth, save his friends, and maybe even save himself at the same time. I hope the story of this thing is at least as cool as Battle. https://archive.vn/VvPUH >Fans of the Sonic comic books should be happy to know that Ian Flynn, head writer of IDW's current Sonic the Hedgehog comic and former lead writer of the Archie Comics Sonic series, is penning Frontier's narrative. Oh wow, he finally made it. I really hate to say it, but this is like what, 7 years late? And I'm not saying it because I mind the wait, it's just that IDW is not really all that great and he doesn't seem as trustworthy to deliver great stories like back then. I really hope he's able to create something good, and hopefully that if he manages to, the rest of the game doesn't completely shit the bed and ruins everything. >>24603 I don't think so. Gonna bet it's related to that ancient technology the press release mentions.
>>24602 It geniunly saddens me that they're still sticking with the short-spined forces model and the lost world idle pose. At least the gameplay won't be automated cause they'll be doing an open world game. Let's hope Flynn does well and Roger get

Is it nigger-pilled of me to say that I've given up on the idea of them ever making another enjoyable 3D Sonic game? They've veered so far off from the shit I loved about the series, that I'm better off trying to make my own game, and at that point I might as well make it my own """original series""" that has nothing to do with superpowered furry autism.
>>24599 I love it
(82.59 KB 749x908 meme.jpg)

>>24611 Nah. Your sentiment is probably shared with a chunk of the fanbase. >my own "original series" Make that not-Sonic game, anon. Put all the love and care into it that you have/had for Sonic. Show them how it's done. And maybe one day I'll join you in doing the same if I get off my lazy ass
>>24613 Thanks, anon. I think I'll try for, at the bare minimum, something that controls a lot like SA1, with the same kind of physics and level design philosophy. There's a lot of potential in the different character abilities that they never quite tapped into, which becomes really apparent when you play as other characters in Sonic's stages, and I've got more cool ideas to add on top of that. Not sure if I've got the artistic chops to design or write characters with the same kind of charm as Adventure era Sonic, but I'll work something out. I have an artist and a writer for siblings, so I could at the very least get some pointers and feedback. I wish you luck in your game idea, too.
I'd rather have a mediocre open world sonic game than another boost game. Boost = mobile game
>>24602 I think the Frontiers logo is the simplest logo I've seen for a Sonic game, it looks lazy in that context. There are a couple of autists rather obsessed with Sonic logos, I'm curious about what they think. >>24611 No one can blame you anon, it is rough and there's not a lot to grab onto for hope considering the past. I'm also wondering how much I'm going to last before burning out because although what I love is still kinda somewhat there I'm just so tired of all the blunders all the time and how Sonic feels like a budget franchise, and I feel the things I like have its days counted. They've already tried to trash everything a bunch of times. Regarding Frontiers I'm too apathetic and busy with IRL stuff to care too much about it right now so I'll wait until more is revealed, but what was it for you that broke the deal already? Honestly the biggest problem so far is that the leak and previous experiences paint a really bleak picture, otherwise very little has been revealed to consider it an unsalvageable mess at this point. >at that point I might as well make it my own """original series""" I wonder how the anon that was making his own fangame is doing. >>24616 >what was it for you that broke the deal already? Honestly the biggest problem so far is that the leak and previous experiences paint a really bleak picture, otherwise very little has been revealed to consider it an unsalvageable mess at this point. For me, it's the realization setting in that they dropped the Adventure fanbase entirely in favor of "wider appeal" and that, either through stubborn unwillingness or their overall loss of talent, they will never go back to that style of gameplay or aesthetic. No more satisfying 3D movement, no more full-fledged characters with unique abilities, no more balanced tone in writing, no more building off of previous stories and characters, I just can't take it seriously or get excited for it anymore. All they're doing with the series is chasing gimmicks and trends, pandering for quick cash-ins, and being an entry point for devs aspiring to work for Nintendo. They didn't make Sonic Lost World because they wanted to further explore the funky gravity and terrain gimmick from SA2, they made it because they wanted that Mario Galaxy/3D World money. They're not making Sonic Frontiers because they think open world is the next step for the series, they just want that BotW money. And between the Twitter, Sonic Boom, the movies, and the fraternizing with letsplayers, they've cemented Sonic as just another snarky ironic memester, instead of a headstrong Shounen protagonist like he used to be. All those cool quotes on the Japanese boxart/promos wouldn't sound sincere coming out of current Sonic's mouth. I know Unleashed came out after, but Sonic and the Black Knight was the swansong of the Sonic that I found compelling. >That'd be dooming the game to fail and you know it. Yeah, I mostly just said that because I want to avoid it feeling like it started off as a fanfic. Nothing against Freedom Planet, but there's a certain consistency and balance in tone that I want to strive for, it's hard to articulate what I mean. Plus, I kinda want my characters to have customizable equipment for gameplay reasons, and I'm leaning towards them being clad in powered-armor which means they could still be furry characters. Imagine the combat of Mega Man ZX (fast-paced close-ranged and projectile combat, fun to shred enemies, multi-tiered lifebars for players and bosses) crossed with Sonic Adventure (fluid 3D movement, physics that let you launch around like a cannonball, movement options on the ground and in the air to keep momentum going, levels full of hidden alternate paths, some shortcuts don't even feel like they were intended), with the complexity of part-swapping customization being on a median level between Custom Robo and Armored Core.
>>24620 I agree with a lot of what you said, but don't you feel Frontiers is at least a small step in the right direction instead of the opposite? Frontiers has a format that is a lot closer to the adventures than Boost Sonic ever was, at least after Unleashed, and it's possible there will be gameplay changes as well to make Sonic better suited to play in the open world. Additionally, with Ian writing the story there's a chance it's something a bit more coherent, with a better understanding of the characters, and all around better than what Potanff were able to create. Now, I think it's disputable whether any this will make a difference in the end but it feels a bit early to be utterly blackpilled.

>>24627 It's a work in progress.
>>24625 You really do have a point, and it does make me happy to see Ian moving up the ladder. I'll calm down and reserve further judgement until we see some actual gameplay.
>>24625 >Additionally, with Ian writing the story there's a chance it's something a bit more coherent, with a better understanding of the characters, and all around better than what Potanff were able to create. He HAS done better in the comics than we've gotten from the videogames. Maybe with this game he could improve Sonic's public image from "Standup Comedy Goku" to "Darkwing Duck"; have him regain the ability to be serious about some things.
>>24633 >He HAS done better in the comics than we've gotten from the videogames Fair enough, hard to do worse than Pontaff. >Maybe with this game he could improve Sonic's public image from "Standup Comedy Goku" to "Darkwing Duck"; have him regain the ability to be serious about some things. I hope so, but I'm not holding my breath for anything too amazing. IDW's writing is not all that great in the first place, it has its moments but they're few and far between. No clue what he'll end up doing in a medium he has no experience in as far as I know. But in any case, I've always felt that the real issue is the direction that Sega wants to take the series in and that they won't allow anything at all that goes beyond their limited, risk-averse vision, and if that's true we might not even see that much of a change from Pontaff. I have doubts that they'll allow the gaijin writer to have any kind of input in what gets created, I feel like Sonic team looks more for a dialogue writer than someone to actually sculpt what events will take place and how, and how they'll be told. At least it'll for sure not be a repeat of the Generations script with the community manager shouting at the fags that they were fucking it all up, kek.

>>24641 Depends on your criteria. Sonic 4 Episode 1 was leaked in its entirety due to a Brazilian from Sonic Retro with a J-Tagged Xbox 360 downloading it from PartnerNET and showing off all 4 zones, and unlocking Super Sonic in it. That incident caused Sega to go on damage control and delay the game to make 2 exclusive console/PC levels since almost everyone reacted negatively to the Minecart level in Lost Labyrinth which was moved with Casino Street's score attack act to the movile versions. Sonic 4 Episode 2 was also leaked in a mostly complete state days before release, finally we have this infamous 8chan moment when a certain Board Owner here got the game a couple weeks early before they delayed the PC version to add Denuvo to it.
>>24642 Oh yeah, that's pretty catastrophically bad too. I wasn't even aware of the story of Sonic 4 EP 1, at least the second part. I also barely remember something about leaking stuff from an official FTP that had a really obvious password like supersonic, that got pretty famous. But overall I think I had in mind more regular leaks like the previous ones which just give some details well in advance before the game is even finished rather than someone getting their hands on the whole game a few days before it officially releases and leaking it. >finally we have this infamous 8chan moment when a certain Board Owner here got the game a couple weeks early before they delayed the PC version to add Denuvo to it. 8chan gonna 8chan. I never associated them adding Denuvo because of him because he got it on Switch and the whole thing had nothing to do with piracy. >>24645 Yes, Sonic 4 was supposed to come out in the Summer before that leak and so Episode 1 ultimately came out in October, one before Colors, instead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRpQCAh-r1Y Mania was delayed twice, with it to have originally come out in the Spring of 2016 before (according to rumors, Iizuka himself pushed to extend the deadline to give the devs more time). It was never outright stated that the Switch leak was the motivating factor behind adding Denuvo, but Sega of Europe were the ones who called the shots on the PC ports of not just Mania, but other titles Yakuza to have Denuvo implemented. IIRC they had deals with that company but I can't verify that at the moment. But yes, as far as details of a game before it's even shown in its entirety, I think you may be right in that regard, assuming everything listed turns out to be true. I may have to look around for that time when he got banned from PSN, too.

Late December Sega had an investors' Q&A and there were a lot of questions about Sonic. The very first question asks about Frontiers. The part where they mention using 'external evaluations' does not fill me with hope at all. Part of me wonders if bullshitting investors about the amount of quality they're putting into the products is against the law. Then they discussed monetization strategies for Sonic, but the answer is not very interesting outside of them betting on the games doing well and considering the Netflix animation a low risk kind of deal. They also mention they don't see their other franchises growing to a similar level of popularity as Sonic. They also pretty much confirm they're not going to do what they did with Forces again in terms of having a reduced initial price. They additionally went on to discuss their NFT strategy and the uproar they generated with their last attempts actually seems to have worked as a deterrent. It is really puzzling to see the phrase >if it is perceived as simple money making, I would like to make a decision not to proceed on an investors' document, though. Whole thing is here: https://www.segasammy.co.jp/english/ir/library/pdf/settlement/2022/managementmtg_main_qa_20211224_e.pdf

>>24715 >I can't wait to storytime his autistic trainwreck but unfortunately he's such a faggot that he won't grant us even that. A storytime of his downfall in writing the comics: >>>/co/21113 How you talking about his OC that's been in production for more than a decade?
>>24695 Ironic that /fast/ is so /slow/
>>24715 I wish that one day he would actually publish this shit, so that we could watch him get blown the fuck out when Sega and EA sue him, and his defense is that characters literally named things like "Evil Sonic" are not derivative. His stance that fans are siding with corporations is also missing the point. They're siding against him in particular because he sucks, and because he stops other fans from working with concepts. All of the characters he claims were unbearable in everything he wrote with them. It too Ian Flynn's incredible awesome to squeeze a tiny bit of blood from the stone that was Evil Sonic, by drastically retooling him into an effectively new character, Scourge (and the only reason Evil Sonic is even related is because Flynn was autistic enough to not want to just ignore things that came before him). But Penders is stopping Flynn from doing more Scourge stories. If he wasn't stopping that, nobody would care. Also, dear lord that character design in the second pic is horrific. Maybe Penders could actually be good if he went for horror. He could be the American Junji Ito.
>>24727 Penders did literally nothing wrong.
>>24726 I bet you feel real original. I take some solace in the fact that it isn't completely dead yet like so many other places.
>>24727 >so that we could watch him get blown the fuck out when Sega and EA sue him, and his defense is that characters literally named things like "Evil Sonic" are not derivative. As much as I wish that would happen (not just so that his autistic ass would finally shut the fuck up but also so that the characters would hopefully get freed from his grip), I really doubt Sega would really go that far simply because there's no profit to be made from those characters and because they'd get stuck in a legal matter that would probably be dragged out as much as possible and stretched in every possible direction because the only way Penders can win anything is by getting the other side exhausted. >Also, dear lord that character design in the second pic is horrific The worst part is that it's far from the worst he's done.
>>24730 Clearly right now Sega is just ignoring him because it isn't worth the effort, but if he actually tried to publish anything, their hand would really be forced. They can't just let him actually publish comics about Knuckles without their consent. Especially since he's so openly antagonistic. I have to think he actually knows his place, and will never publish because he knows what will happen. He's just talking shit because he is confident in his current position, but he knows he shouldn't go any further.
>>24730 Ken claims to wholly own Shade, Evil Sonic, and Robo Robotnic. If he ever actually used those characters, Sega would no doubt sue him, because simply letting him do it would set a dangerous precedent for them on 3rd parties profiting off works highly derivative of their copyrighted properties. I highly doubt he would ever actually use them, though, because he knows that would prompt legal action, as much as he likes to claim he's uncontested. Instead, he'll just continue to boast about how he "owns" these characters to inflate his own ego, while never actually doing anything with them.
>>24733 was actually meant for >>24732.
>>24727 >Penders is stopping Flynn from doing more Scourge stories.
>>24735 Scourge was more than "Green Sonic." He was more than Evil Sonic. And that's what made him good. His character was basically a commentary on how shitty a character he was before, under Penders. He's actually a strong argument for Penders' case, not because Penders created him, but because he is a great example of the artistic value of derivative characters. Scourge is derivative of Evil Sonic, and to take away his history as Evil Sonic takes away from what makes him a good character. But he is also much more than Evil Sonic. Penders could be using the same moral argument to say why he should be allowed to continue publishing stories about Pink Knuckles, but he doesn't, he goes in the opposite direction and argues in favor of copyright law, which is absurd for a guy who is literally claiming that he owns a character he literally named Evil Sonic.
>>24732 Yes, I guess that's also a possibility, hence him just stalling indefinitely. It really is hilarious that he has to try to come up with excuses about why he hasn't done any real publishing in like 10 years. On the other hand he never really said he'd publish anything about Knuckles, right? Just the dumb characters he created. Even then I guess it wouldn't really make a difference for Sega since everything would still be based on the Sonic universe and characters but considering how the lawsuit with Archie went and how his contract was destroyed the whole thing is muddy with regards to the extents of what he actually owns. I wish I could just call him a faggot pussy and dare him to publish something with the characters just to spite him and call on his bullshit.
>>24737 >On the other hand he never really said he'd publish anything about Knuckles, right? Just the dumb characters he created. The characters he "created" ARE just Knuckles. Also, he did say his stuff was going to include actual Knuckles, but he just wasn't going to call him Knuckles anymore. Penders is Chris Chan levels of autistic and he says that the story is going to pick up where it left off, and all the old stuff is canon. He couldn't just have the main character stop appearing for no reason. But he can just call him by a new nickname. I can make a character that looks exactly like Superman but I say he's Superman's son, and now I call him Duperman. Totally new character, guys. Not at all derivative.
>>24704 > 1 vid, at the end > Adults welcome > Boxart shows rating 18+ What? Why? How? Do I even want to know?
>>24739 Well, the "adults welcome" bit is to advertise that Lego is not only a toy for kids, but for everyone of all ages. In this particular case it's also appealing to the adults that played Sonic 1 on the Genesis as children, considering the game is right at 30 years old now. As far as the 18+ rating goes, looking into it, it's something they introduced just a couple years ago, and it seems even Lego fans have been confused by their use of the rating, as one of it's early applications was a Sesame Street set spawned from an Ideas proposal just like this Sonic set. The only consistency seems to be higher price tags and if the set is aimed primarily at nostalgia.
>>24739 I completely glanced over that, oh wow. I guess it's about not having to comply with some regulation or another.

>>24763 Well damn. Still, it would be nice to see /fast/ make some sort of game for Bump and Sage though.

Well Sega just announced yet another movie and a Knuckles live action series. This is what you wanted right /fast/? https://nitter.42l.fr/sonic_hedgehog/status/1493707402968928262
>>24772 >Sonic movie sequel >Sonic 3rd movie >Knuckles spin-off series >Sonic Netflix series >Sonic Frontiers >Sonic General Mills cereal deal We Sonic fans are eating good, fucking hell
>>24772 >Knuckles live action series I can see it now: the Donkey Kong Country cartoon, but with people in low-budget echidna costumes instead of CGI apes, and the once-per-episode song is usually (if not always) Knuckles rapping. And then partway through the first season, Ken Penders tries to sue them. This is going to be hilarious.
>>24774 >Ken Penders tries to sue them I really really hope this happens, it would be the most hilarious thing to happen since the anniversary party.
(309.71 KB 592x643 penders nfts.png)

>>24774 >>24775 I think this is more likely to get him into legal trouble, assuming he actually follows through with it. Sega acknowledged Chronicles in official material, recently, so they still lay claim to Shade.
(112.55 KB 757x503 ride.jpg)

>>24776 I've been waiting for some happenings for years, can they get on with it already? >only the buyer will have access to the bonus material included I hope he doesn't realize that's not how it works. >mfw a 3rd party buys the NFT and produces commercial merch of Shade under the guise that he obtained the rights legally from penders, making an even bigger mess and forcing Sega's hand But more seriously, how is this different from some fan creating merchandise from their fanart and selling it? Wouldn't Sega just consider it like that?
>>24777 The difference is that Ken claims to own Shade. Plus, NFTs have such a negative response that Sega may try to stop him purely to disassociate the brand from the practice. And NFTs typically sell for a lot more money than, say, a plush or keychain, so there's that factor as well.

>>24799 That's why you use tags to store images rather than folders. Could just punch in "maria_robotnik" and get everything that way.
>>24800 I started doing that years ago, but I was overwhelmed by the amount of images I had to tag. Then I left 4/sthg/ and there wasn't a lot of reason anymore to spend so much time tagging images since the regular folder system worked somewhat well given the small post volume.
It was Kazuyuki Hoshino's birthday recently and I just found out that he was the one who drew that EGM Cover all those years ago which promoted Sonic Heroes: https://archive.is/VbcEe He's been a great long standing artist and creative director since joining way back when for CD as a protege of sorts to Naoto Ohshima.

It seems Sega has entered its usual early prerelease advertisement stage where they release trivial information targeted at people that might stumble upon the franchise for the first time. I also had some more time to look into Origins and found some interesting pictures. No clue what's going on with the 3D classic Sonic, looks sort of like Generations. Apparently if I'm understanding things correctly you can only play in widescreen (and possibly 60FPS?) in the anniversary mode, which has infinite lives and no game overs. The classic mode is the one with the original games' mechanics but in 4:3 aspect ratio with filler on the sides.
They really are going to nickel and dime this aren't they? I sure wish I could find that picture with the video games analogy with fast food. Imagine if they redid SA2 today and they tried to charge you for the different backgrounds and menu narrators, not to mention the alternate outfits.
>>24943 >widescreen, but no lives Seems like someone knows the audience for this game a little too well
>>24944 They would have gotten some money out of me if they just released the full game in a physical copy. Instead, due to their greed, they will get none of my money. If I can't own the full game, then I will not pay for it.

Sonic Prime news just hit. It looks like it's made in SFM or some shit. Also it features a completely independent, separate voice cast because why the hell maintain any semblance of coherency anymore? Also Sonic's a nigger https://archive.is/pqjG5 Are you ready for this journey of self-discovery and redemption /fast/?
>>24965 On a second though it does look a bit better when it's not stretched to full screen like when I originally saw it outside the browser.
(134.43 KB 720x480 C_CP15919670.jpg)

>>24965 >Also it features a completely independent, separate voice cast because why the hell maintain any semblance of coherency anymore? You mean like how the OVA had an entirely separate cast? Or like how the current movie series only kept an actress in Tails? >Also Sonic's a nigger So how he originally started as.
>>24967 The OVA is a one off Japanese thing when the only other Japanese voice acting Sonic had was scattered lines in commercials and obscure single-line clips from spinoff games. The movie is probably what Anon was expecting them to copy, because surely they could afford to keep whatshisname as the voice of Sonic. And if not, why not keep the voices from the games? Also, technically Urkel wasn't the original voice of Sonic. There were a few of those obscure Japanese voice clips in commercials and spinoff games that predate the American cartoons. Sonic originally started as a Japanese man. In fact, I'm pretty sure the first Sonic voice was the guy who plays Trunks in Dragon Ball Z.
>>24967 >You mean like how the OVA had an entirely separate cast? Or like how the current movie series only kept an actress in Tails? Are you trying to agree or disagree with me? You're illustrating two things decades apart and a more coherent period in the middle. >So how he originally started as. Only with more socjus ideology-based hiring now.
>>24969 Sonic franchise voice cast has never been coherent, dude. All three early western cartoons had separate voice actors for everyone except Sonic. The OVA had entirely different voice actors including Sonic. Then the games from Adventure on started having voice acting (where Tails changed actors twice), yet the dub for Sonic X had a completely different cast. Then the games switched to that voice cast, and then switched again a few years later for everyone except Eggman. And then the Sonic movies changed the cast almost entirely again. The only time one series had shared a cast with another, without any sort of swapping before or after, was Boom. It only looks more coherent in the middle, because there was barely any spin-off material that used voice acting at the time, and even then the games changed their entire cast two times. This is the first time in years Sonic has had multiple different voiced series going on at once. And even then, why does it matter that these different series have different casts? They're different continuities, the characters don't have to sound the exact same. And it's not like this is exclusive to Sonic, either. How many times has Batman changed voice actors? The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Transformers? I just don't see how this is an issue to complain about. It's pretty common when it comes to long-running multi-media franchises.
>>24970 Yes, I'm not talking about things that happened 20 to 30 years ago, back then Sega didn't even care to get rights to the music in their games and even lost the source code of a bunch. With 20+ years since that happened it's irrelevant to what's been happening recently and not so recently, where there has been only one cast instead of multiple casts at any given point in time despite some VA changes and where the cast has, for 12 years now I think, remained constant. That's almost half of Sonic's lifetime. But besides this, you're ignoring how for the past decade and more Sega has been stomping on anything that could be remotely fun for the sake of keeping things within their stupid franchise rules for the sake of brand coherency, and then violating their own rules for the pettiest of reasons, which is frustrating as hell. >It only looks more coherent in the middle, because there was barely any spin-off material that used voice acting at the time >This is the first time in years Sonic has had multiple different voiced series going on at once. You're literally saying it was more coherent yourself. >why does it matter that these different series have different casts? On one hand, because I feel like hitting them with the same stone they've been throwing at fun things for years. But also because how a character sounds is part of what defines the character. I don't see why anyone should have to be okay with changes such as these outside of when there's no choice, like with Otsuka. There's absolutely no benefit to the series or the customers when they swap a VA for someone else unless it's something that was completely broken. This shouldn't even be needed to be said. I'm always baffled when people say the way the series or the characters look, sound, or behave doesn't matter, as if they believed only the name in the title screen matters. >They're different continuities, the characters don't have to sound the exact same Why not? The first thing anyone would think is that they do. >It's pretty common when it comes to long-running multi-media franchises. It doesn't make it any less shit. Specially when Sonic as a series has itself managed to have the same VAs since pretty much the beginning in Japan.
Here's an awkward would be Origins video that came from nowhere. Shows a bunch of new stuff such as menus/UI and some new features. The main menu looks kind of odd and bland, I'm not sure I dig how it all looks together. Doesn't have any of the Charm Mania had.

Here's the Ugly Sonic scenes from the Chip N' Dale Movie if any of you fags haven't seen it yet.
>>24990 >Considering the comics' luck what are the odds of this guy ending up with the rights of the character? Nil. Penders at least had the fact he worked for Archie and created the characters, the debate was over if he forfeited ownership when he made them. Here, the guy is unaffiliated with IDW, had no explicit involvement with Belle's creation, and is making claims based purely on conjecture and tenuous similarities. His claims have less substance than Penders with Shade, and the courts threw out that case.
>>24995 I didn't expect this crossover
>>24995 I haven't and I intend to keep it that way
>>24996 Especially since Belle started out as a mouse badnik marionette instead of her current nonspecific form.

>>24996 >the guy is unaffiliated with IDW, had no explicit involvement with Belle's creation According to him he was in talks with IDW about publishing a comic based on his character but that fell through or something and then IDW came up with Belle.
>>25000 "In talks with" isn't the same thing as "was employed by and has his name on the originating comic". Niv here essentially has to prove that not only did the people working on Sonic likely see his material (as sending his concepts to IDW doesn't mean everyone at IDW saw them), but that Belle is close enough to Bongkid to be a direct ripoff, as simply being inspired doesn't cut it for a lawsuit. Otherwise Konami could have sued Iga over several Bloodstained characters.
>>25000 It's still absurdly tenuous. Especially since his character isn't all that unique. The only thing they both have in common is the freckles, and that's a pretty common ventriloquist dummy design.
>>25001 >>25002 Yeah, yeah, I know it makes no sense that this would go anywhere but what I mean is that the comics have such terrible luck with this stuff that it's fun exaggerate. After all Penders had signed away his rights to the characters and there are archives of him saying so himself, but his contract mysteriously banished or was caught in an office fire or something like that so weird and unlikely things tend to happen around this. >Bongkid Someone needs to draw this. Also >>24996 >His claims have less substance than Penders with Shade, and the courts threw out that case He's still actively claiming she belongs to her and producing and selling stuff with her as official. Speaking of Penders, I've been waiting for him to comment on the Belle mess but he's busy complaining about guns and abortion laws.

>>25004 see >>24715 and pic related. Also have the weasel trying to sneakily appropriate Knuckles' hat. https://archive.is/TRnDd https://archive.is/byRlU
>>25005 Okay, that's not exactly claiming Shade or selling stuff regarding her. Notice he say "should this go to NFT", not "it will" or "it has". And while that definitely Shade's suit and basically copyright infringement, that's not Shade herself. Remember, the recently published Encyclospeedia had an entry on her, so Sega still lays claim. Penders has no legal claim to Shade, no matter how much he wants to act like he does.
(158.90 KB 1280x720 sonicthink.mp4)

>>25006 >that's not exactly claiming Shade or selling stuff regarding her He calls her by name, it's the same design, he's quite literally said anything related to Shade belongs to him, and he's selling (or at least insinuating he'll sell) art of her as if it were official. I don't know how it could be more clear. >Notice he say "should this go to NFT", not "it will" or "it has". I'm not sure how his little charade went, might be interesting to look into it later. >Penders has no legal claim to Shade, no matter how much he wants to act like he does. Yes, I just said he's claiming Shade is his, which he is.
>>25007 Characters aren't their outfits, dude. Shade is an orange echidna, not an edgy black suit. If I make a bat OC, stick her in Rouge's outfit, and call it the Rouge Suit, that's not the same as me using Rouge herself. Penders is dressing Julie-Su up like Shade, not using Shade herself (which is probably why he thinks he can get away with it).
>>25008 That's not a valid comparison, the armor is not an outfit, it completely covers the character and would make it impossible to tell apart one character from another.
>>25006 The En-typo-speedia is not evidence of anything.
>>25011 Anon what the fuck is this and is there more?
>>25012 It's a Sonic 1 hack. I don't think there's more or a download yet.

>>25032 Half an hour to this. I wonder what kind of shitstorm this will unleash.
These enemies (can they even be called badniks?) look terrible
Well that was short. I think these enemies are going to slow the combat down a lot and make it rather boring and drawn out. Some of the abilities look cool though, but some other like the circle thingy look too slow and not powerful enough to be worth it to use them. Overall there seems to be no reason to fight these things and given how slow and unrewarding the combat seems to be I'd rather avoid doing it which probably means they're going to use whatever that thing the enemies drop as a currency to prevent you from advancing in the game and force you into looking for these enemies and defeating them, like in Unleashed with the medals. Nonetheless I kind of want to see more and play it for myself, everything is so unusual looking I'm kind of drawn to it.
>>25040 Im pretty sure defeating enemies will be necessary in order to obtain points so that you can level up. If only the enemy ai were harder it could actually make this not seem like some sort of easy dork souls. Imagine an actual hard sonic game. dont give me that dark souls is not hard crap you know what I mean
>>25041 >Im pretty sure defeating enemies will be necessary in order to obtain points so that you can level up That makes sense too. >If only the enemy ai were harder Yeah, it seems they just applied the same enemy logic they are used to from the regular games (where the badniks often have some sort of routine they repeat mindlessly) to this and I don't think it'll work that well. I wonder if they'll have sections with regular stages too. I have no idea how any of this comes together otherwise. Honestly all these trailers should have been executed much better, and I'm surprised it's being done like this since they have a pretty sharp media team and now the meme man is even higher in the corporate ladder.

(2.80 MB 1280x720 part.webm)

According to the IGN video they wanted to create something mysterious and somber and they kind of got that right for better or worse. The whole thing feels unsettling. I really hope these babby tier puzzles are just the very first ones but considering how ridiculous Sonic games have become in terms of difficulty and even precedent in other games entirely I'm not sure. There'll be regular levels too it seems. I think that's pretty cool, I was hoping that would be the case but considering how low effort the levels were in the previous games and the rather bland level design I don't know how great that'll be, also they always had issues making enough levels or long enough levels to fill the game so it's doubtful this feature will be all that great, but here's hoping I guess. Not a lot of new gameplay in this video but something that was interesting was that part in the boss fight where he couldn't get to the top of the boss through the waypoints and flew off the boss but still managed to grab onto it and climb it on his own. It'd be pretty cool if you could do your own things and solve things your way like that more often.

Sonic Central webm. >>25067 Yes, I'm not saying the game is going to be good or bad, just that they did manage to create something that feels somber and unsettling.
Honestly I'm not sure what Sega was thinking, leaving it up to IGN to handle the first major reveal of this game that will have been 5 years in the making. Did IGN offer them a big sack of cash or something?
>>25070 It's a bit weird, I guess they could have included a trailer in one of the big streams with other titles for more viewership but outside of doing another physical event there aren't that many options. Ultimately they may still do the former later. At least this saves me the trouble of having to watch an hour and a half of shit trailers to get to what I want to see.
The IGN Frontiers saga continues tomorrow at the usual time with an interview with Iizuka about the game. >We talk with Sonic Team Creative Officer Takashi Iizuka to find out the origins of Sonic Frontiers' "Open Zone" design, the split between that design and the traditional linear 3D Sonic levels, and the lessons learned from Sonic Adventure that went into Sonic Frontiers. Find out all of this and more in this Iizuka-san interview for Sonic Frontiers. https://yewtu.be/watch?v=-OTqxOudRd4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OTqxOudRd4 Sounds interesting. I really want to learn more about the regular levels in the game. I wonder if they're going to be reusing the combat abilities in the levels too, otherwise it'd be kind of a waste to implement the abilities but not use them. Already it is kind of waste in a way because you'd think they'd want to take the most advantage out of the open world they had to create, but the open world by itself just doesn't scratch the sanic itch. Also it's easy to assume they'll be boost based but I wonder if it's gonna be tweaked or something since you don't even have boost in the open world which is kind of where you'd want to boost the most since it's a fuckhuge area. Perhaps you gain the full boost with levels or something, that'd make sense.
What are the odds there are Wisps in Frontiers?

>>25078 Well, I suspected as much for a long time but I guess it's better to get it out of the way instead of having people rioting on release and tons of youtube videos popping up on the matter
>>25078 Well no matter what I do with the video it just won't upload. I'll see about reporting this on /site/ tomorrow.
>>25082 >>25078 Actually I lied, one more try. >>25081 Yeah, better to clear it up now than have a nasty surprise later. But they made arrangements with Masato Nakamura for Sonic 2's music previously (and probably again now for the Origins release) so it could have happened.

holy shit Iizuka just teased adventure 3
They definitely had the right idea going for a more freedom oriented approach, that was always a complaint with the boost games despite the environments being beautiful and people wanting to explore them. I also think the storytelling (and not just the stories) was terrible in the previous games and I'm happy they realized that and are going for something different. I'm still not sure if the good intentions will translate into a game that's worth a damn. On the other hand the soundtrack is confirmed to follow a new philosophy compared to the previous OSTs which is dumb because that actually fucking worked. It's probably going to be the forgettable stuff we've been exposed to. I also still don't get what he's trying to convey about open world vs. open zone.
Here's today's Sonic Prime segment on the Netflix's event. >reinvented cast >fate of the multiverse Fuck this shit. Why can't we have a fucking regular Sonic TV show/movie?
>>25088 The Sonic we knew is fucking dead. We aren't the demographic anymore and as we seen before SEGA keeps changing Sonic's image every decade to fit in with the current trends and "culture". We got 90's Sonic, 00's Sonic (my favorite), 10's Sonic, and now we are witnessing 20's Sonic. Face it man, it's over. I guess there's Boom but his personality and writing feel in line with the 10's Poor guy really is washed-up

>>25089 >>25089 >The Sonic we knew is fucking dead. >We aren't the demographic anymore Ok, i don't care This is like the third time where an era of sonic has ended, and the same generic augment of sonic is dead I'm sure this is the same thing that was being said by the 2d fans when the mid 2000's started. If there wasn't change we would've never have gotten 00's sonic in the first place. The only thing that was is bad was in the 10's where they took nothing from past lore/stories and played 100% safe in story and tone. Past game even in the SA1 took elements and expanded lore from past games, even in heroes they bought the chaotix back, which is something i'm sure less likely would've been done if it was the 10's. Even mid 00's and early 10's at least they brought there own lore and stories into the mix while expanding the early 00's sonic. Sonic was always building or using the past era's, the past era was always round one way or another, even sometimes in the 10's with generations and mighty and ray. It was just put on pause and ignored what came before in the 10's. And that done for most of the 10's until forces which was poorly handled > Face it man, it's over. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsx2vdn7gpY
There's some sort of convention going on right now and Sega has a Frontiers demo on it. They have it locked down tight though and they're only letting people play it by appointment and with an NDA but it seems there might be some more info dropping next week. Although they don't allow video to be taken either some videos of other parts of the convention show Frontiers in the background and we get a glimpse of some of the regular levels and the hud, which so far nothing has been shown about. I'm really curious about this stupid game, I'm getting hyped for no good reason and I don't like it.
>>25101 Looking at these more carefully it seems Sonic will be able to use some items when free roaming. Maybe some of the fruits we've seen him pick up are going to give him special effects or something. Also the regular levels seem linear as fuck sadly.

It seems the embargo on articles regarding the convention demo has been lifted so there's more info on what people were able to play. Iizuka has also been giving some interviews which reveal some interesting bits of info about Frontiers and the future. <Yurogamer Iizuka interview >The initial attempts at an open world Sonic didn't work out, and the team had to return to the drawing board. "We played it in testing and we thought this isn't working, something's not going right," says Iizuka. "So we had to scrap it all, throw it all away, start again and keep iterating and iterating and iterating. It took so much longer, you know - usually when we're making a Sonic game, we're going to make something based off of the previous format so we can just roll right into production, we know what we're going to make it. But it's this iteration that we needed to get us to this open zone, style and format that took a couple of years, which is why it took a whole lot longer to get us to like a brand new title than it usually does." >the world opens up as you complete things, and new rails come in so you get to experience the island kind of transforming into this bigger and bigger playground which does feel really Sonic-y and it's our way of showing people this open zone format >this is the third generation and the open zone format is going to be the new style for Sonic games https://archive.is/eZbYg So they plan to make 'open zone' games the next game style it seems. I wonder how cost effective that is, as making that big map and then making even more stages is a lot more than you'd expect on a regular Sonic game budget. Then again they said something kind of similar with Lost World regarding establishing a new gameplay style and you know how that went. I wonder if that demo they scrapped was what the playtester leaked, although everything we've seen still matches what he described. <VGC Iizuka interview advance >We asked Iizuka what he felt about the recent #DelaySonicFrontiers hashtag on social media, and whether he was actually in a position to delay the game if he wasn’t entirely happy with it. lol >“Frontiers is in development now, and actually we’ve been doing a lot of playtesting with our target audience, who would be in that demographic of someone who’d play a Sonic game and enjoy it,” he replied. https://archive.is/GxA8h He probably means focus group testing and I fucking hate it. Focus groups' only purpose is to add normalfag shit into games, justifying stupid decisions, and shifting blame so that no one can be held accountable. I still remember Whatshisname Frost going b-but muh focus group testing when talking about some of the retardedness in Boom.

>>25106 <nintendoeverything demo review >Sonic Frontiers has two different playstyles to choose from: Action Style, which gives Sonic a bit of extra weight as he moves around, and High-Speed Style, which is considerably faster >There’s even fishing, apparently what >if you’re careless – the character will meet his demise. Fortunately, any damage you’ve dealt to a boss before you die seems to persist when you return to them https://archive.is/F3ypO They also have a video which shows new bosses, enemies, puzzles, and locations, one of them with some sort of Eggman vessel. Some of the combat movements make me hopeful the combat might have some meat to it but we'll see. https://yewtu.be/watch?v=XYOFWcGfxYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYOFWcGfxYU <pcgamesn demo review >I didn’t get to check it against the slower option, but the fast controls in Sonic Frontiers get very fast kek >The demo includes two minor ‘boss’ fights, and it’s here that I get a chance to click with Frontiers’ combat system. It’s pretty simple – locking onto an enemy will change Sonic’s focus so he moves relative to that enemy, just like in Souls games. Tapping X will have him execute a quick attack that snaps right to the enemy in focus, and the trick tends to be to time them so as not get swatted when you go in for a strike. >There’s a complicated embargo to observe regarding the Sonic Frontiers demo, and I can’t share everything I saw during the time I played Jesus Christ why are they being this obstinate about keeping it all under such tight wraps. Also I really hope the combat is not just that holy shit. https://archive.is/NNO7Y Overall the reviewers try to compromise with the reader a lot >look guys we know it's rough around the edges but >there are some very evident technical limitations, however It kind of sticks out and makes you question how sincere it all is.

>>25107 Continuing with this, here's an interview Iizuka did with Gamespot. Holy fucking shit Gamespot kept cutting the video in the middle of Iizuka's responses. Anyway, they stress that this is the 'future of Sonic' some more; they mention that they're not going for a 'comical' kind of storytelling (I imagine they mean lighthearted, like Colors); they mention Ian is writing the dialogue for the story and Sonic's 'snarky comments', which makes it sound like Ian isn't writing the story itself which may not be completely unexpected but still; Gamespot asks about whether the puzzles get any more difficult with game progression, which Iizuka dodges completely; and there are some other questions which aren't very relevant. https://archive.is/xLlO9 Some outlet called The Gamer also wrote about the demo they played. Lots of info on this one. >I don’t know if this will make it into the release version, but the settings include a dozen or so sliders that allow you to customize the way Sonic controls. There are five different sliders related to Sonic’s speed, as well as turning, acceleration, resistance, and more. I can understand why you would want to give players the opportunity to customize the way Sonic handles to some degree - Sonic has an all-ages fanbase, after all - but this felt more like Sega isn’t sure how to tune the physics so it’s just making us figure it out. >controlling Sonic actually felt pretty good. Sonic’s movements are snappy and responsive, and it’s relatively easy to be precise while platforming >Sonic can double-jump in the air and use the boost to dash forward long distances >All of his base stats - speed, attack, defense, and ring capacity - can be incrementally upgraded by finding hidden collectibles. >Sonic also gains new abilities throughout the game that can be upgraded by spending skill points >Homing attacks will only get you so far, and mashing X to unleash a torrent of kicks and punches, while satisfying, will often get you killed. You have to learn attack patterns and wait for the right time to go in, dodge attacks, and resist the temptation to over-commit. Combat is fast, flashy, and a lot more engaging than I was expecting. >There are platforming challenges that reward you with the opportunity to reveal parts of the map in a scattered, checkerboard order. >You’re also searching for Memory Tokens, which are used to free Sonic’s friends. In the demo, I found all of Amy’s Memory Tokens and released some kind of digital imprint of her from a futuristic jail cell >Tails was also mentioned at the start, but I don’t yet know what other Sonic characters will be in the game. Eggman does make a brief appearance, and I got the impression he’s just as lost and confused as Sonic is >There’s another core gameplay mechanic in Sonic Frontiers that, according to the NDA I signed, I’m not allowed to talk about until June 29. If you’ve been following the IGN First coverage, however, it’s already been revealed and widely discussed. I’ll have a lot more to say about it in a couple of weeks, because it’s a major part of the game and I think it’s great. Here’s IGN’s Mitchell Saltzman describing the thing I’m not allowed to talk about. lol https://archive.is/AMNDC The way Sonic controls has been positively highlighted by different outlets by now, not that it means anything considering who it comes from. There's also been a more crisp picture from the demo pop up which shows the hud more clearly. Judging from the review from above it seems you'll be able to see each one of your four stats and the level of each on the bottom left part of the hud, there's a compass at the top and some counters on the upper left part of the screen, with rings capped at 400 on the first level of ring capacity. Oh, and get this, the caption on the game's window says 'rangers', just like in the leak, kek.

A new IGN video is up and it's an interview with Kishimoto. As surprising as it is, I don't think I've ever seen Kishimoto before. He looks like an enormous fag. For the most part he goes over the rationale behind some of the features in the game, like the open zone, which he mention is like an improved world map. I think this is a step in the right direction because just selecting levels from a glorified menu is weak as fuck, but for that to work correctly the meat of the game is supposed to be somewhere else and so far we haven't seen much of that at all. He also says that the combat was inspired by the first Sonic movie, and confirms there'll be dynamic weather and time of day in the game and that some events depend on this. He comments on the difficulty of the game saying that a higher difficulty was needed in previous games to prevent the players from finishing the game too quickly and that for Frontiers they didn't need to do that because it's long enough on its own so the difficulty is kind of uniform. Although he remarks that the game is still not a walk in the park it's not really very reassuring. He estimates around 20 to 30 hour of regular playtime and about twice of that if you want to 100% it but I'm also skeptical of that, lol. What would you fags say is the longest game in the series? https://yewtu.be/watch?v=sAalzwme3RE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAalzwme3RE Here's the interview in text format too if you'd rather read: https://archive.is/G4t45 >>25117 I don't like it either. It makes the whole game feel pointless.
(2.52 MB 651x10811 vgc2.png)

>>25118 The VGC interview with Iizuka that they previously mentioned has now been released in full too and it has some interesting bits and pieces https://archive.is/uwMtF >Because of the success of the movies, we’re finding that we’re reaching into this wider audience of people who maybe never played the game before, or don’t play them that much. It’s this wider group of fans who we need to start now making content for. >Because the movie Sonic came from where the game started, trying to take the movie qualities and stick it back into the games doesn’t really work well. What I want to do is stay faithful to our game Sonic and really expand on the game Sonic to incorporate new ideas that are going to get people excited about new games. >But the game Sonic is really the core essence of the character, so instead of trying to take the movie and put it inside of the game, I really wanted to expand on the game to make it appealing to everyone. >I see a core fanbase of people who really like the 2D side-scrolling format, and people who really like the 3D action format. Trying to put those both together to make everyone happy doesn’t really work. >Young kids are going to be more into the 2D side-scrolling format, and they’re not going to want the 3D action games kek >2017 was one of those examples, where we delivered Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces to the two different fan types in the same year, and everyone was happy kek. Then VGC puts him against the ropes regarding his previous SA3 remark <You mentioned in an IGN interview that you’d like to one day work on Sonic Adventure 3. What would that game look like compared to Frontiers? <But from your comments, doing another Sonic Adventure sounds like something you’ve thought about? <So just to clear, is Sonic Adventure 3 something you’d seriously consider? Or was that just a frivolous comment? lol >I want to be very direct and very clear: we have no plans to make Sonic Adventure 3. Completely predictable but still very fucking funny. He also shoots down a possible Adventure remaster. Overall I think he has some good points but the execution has always been the biggest issue with Sonic games so ultimately it'll all boil down to how they can translate this into the games. Considering what he said about 2D and 3D games the biggest question is where do they want to take the 2D part of the franchise now since for 3D they've mentioned they intend to make more open world games. They've already played the remaster card, so they have to make a new game, unless they remaster something like the Advance series which is not really what anyone wants which would make it a typical Sonic Team blunder. I wonder if they'll stick to Genesis style graphics for whatever they make next and whether they'll try to make it fit within the regular classic universe.
>>25119 Finally, Sega has also come up with a new video series to promote Origins before launch. On this episode they just go over a few of the features of the game but I don't think there's anything we didn't know before other than maybe that there's just a new opening and ending scene per game.
