Weekly Theme Thread Anonymous 09/28/2020 (Mon) 04:02:17 No. 213

Blegh!
Alright we're caught up. Without some of the back-and-forth the thread's a little soulless but you've got to start somewhere.

>>593 Sure wish I could listen to .webms on this piece of sh*t. I feel like I'm missing out already.
>>595 It's just Season of the Witch by Donovan that I cut down so it wasn't so long. There is a surprising dearth of poppy iconic songs about witches.
>>596 That is surprising tbh; I can't think of any off the top of my head either. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAMYGzwUTK4
I just realized the real consequence of forgetting my other computer at my friend's house last night: MUH FILE is still over there! I guess I have to start over because I'm not making that 40+ minute drive until next week. I was looking forward to finishing this one too.
(151.85 KB 786x606 Witch.png)

>>593 My submission for this week. I was going to go full Coppertone, but could not make it look quite right. Treetop branches still look awkward. I think that including more of them would make them look better. Advice on making them look more natural is welcome. >>669 You can still finish it up and post it next week. Looking pretty good and thicc
>>670 Almost looks like it could be the start of a Frank Cho drawing if you just had a little more experience under your belt-keep at it! I think with the pose she looks like she's covering her own mouth a little too aggressively, like maybe it'd be better if we saw her proverbial "oh!" face as she realizes what's about to happen. I think the hand being there kind of breaks up the silhouette of her face a little too much as well. Where we might see a subtle chubby curve where her cheek would be it's mostly the boniest parts of her face playing off of one of the boniest parts of the body (the hand). I am not someone that's into this sort of thing but: her feet look pretty good. I think with the foot on our left the heel bone sort of appears like it's being fit into a socket (which it technically is, of course) but it should be overlapping/obscuring that part (the medial malleolus) rather than visibly being inserted into it with. I could be wrong though. >natural branches I guess looking into naturally occurring fractals would be a start. I think for a piece like this it's not the end of the world if they're a little "abbreviated" though, it really looks adequate for the prop that it is for the most part.
(375.69 KB 800x960 witch_wip.png)

>>593 Cowgirl gunwitch. Was originally going to have her holding a broom, so that's why the offhand is postioned that way. There is absolutely not a cock drawn on another layer. >>670 > I was going to go full Coppertone, but could not make it look quite right. The hemline of her dress isn't hooked under her knees. It could (would) be pulled up to her waist, exposing under cheek.
>>674 Noice, and here I thought you were going to post that witchy gondola from the drawpile. >not that there'd have been anything wrong with that https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Hg1Kudd_x4
>>674 >mfw I just noticed the broom had a saddle Good work with the gun as well, pardner. That classic octagonal gun barrel didn't go unnoticed. YEE HAW! https://youtu.be/2yVL72Wbz4A

>>740 Looks like the background character of a hentai. Good work fella. Remember the jawline kind of creates a division between the face and the earlobe, there are exceptions but at least typically the line is visible if subtle. The feet are pretty good, but there is a significant discrepancy in the size of his hands and fingers and length of his lower legs as well. Keep workin'!

>>832 Nice perspective on the blade of the sw'pear anon. The details are abundant throughout while not feeling overdone. Good work! I do feel the haft of the spear might be deviating a little bit from where the center of the blade suggests it should go, however if it is off it's not by very much at all, certainly not to where most would care or notice. Well done all around.
>>833 addendum: I think I might be mistaken here, I didn't consider the 3-dimensional volume of the blade, and when I do the apparent discrepancy seems to become even less significant. As usual my autism is just flaring up over nothing, more or less.

>>804 Fucking around with GrafX2 and the Windows 95 16 color palette. I wanted to do something simple but got caught up in the rendering. Fug D:
>>860 Reminds me of one of the older Might and Magic games. That's going to be a "based" from me there, compadre
>>860 I really enjoy the style. It used a very limited color range and clearly defined technique, but still manages to fool me into believing that certain parts are just a filter applied to a photograph. (But it's probably too time consuming to make that a staple style for any real project. Or am I wrong?)
>>864 It was fairly time consuming, but part of that was just grafx2’s ancient interface. The dithering is itself a pattern that you apply to a brush, so that part isn’t tedious, unless you want to hand dither like a madman. It’s just with pixel art you have to zoom way the fuck in and be very precise on where the individual pixels go sometimes.
On second thought there was too much wrong with that to bring myself to post it even with the not-excuse of it "not being finished".

I think the hand being there kind of breaks up the silhouette of her face a little too much as well. Where we might see a subtle chubby curve where her cheek would be it's mostly the boniest parts of her face playing off of one of the boniest parts of the body (the hand). I was not sure what to do with her hands. I wanted her to hold broom with one, but decided on mouth covering to let viewer's imagination to work a bit. In hindsight, this approach works better if we see more than half of character's face. >feet I am working on fully learning feet, but I am still not quite there. I am fine drawing them from side view and 100% from below, but any other angle causes problems. Even if I have a reference. I know how to break them into basic shapes/planes and set everything up in correct perspective. I just need to grind them a bit more to make final product look right. >The hemline of her dress isn't hooked under her knees. It could (would) be pulled up to her waist, exposing under cheek. I do not know how I missed that. My brain just stops working whenever I deal with lose fabrics. I might need to give up and go full greco roman, and have people either wear armor or nothing at all. Perhaps a subtle overlap of the smol breast form and that of the arm as well? >>3316 I would like to see more abstract themes. I really liked >>3209, because of that. You can interpret the meaning of "stripes and stars" whatever way you want. Most of the themes are way to concrete and define specific object in our physical world, which leads to a very constrained space of possibilities. Maybe try some more abstract themes like "Time" or "wave" or "hot".
>>3340 While I liked Stars and Stripes as well, I think in general they're already a pretty good balance. The idea of the theme thread is to give someone that doesn't know what to draw a subject to focus on, I think it defeats the purpose to be too interpretive too often tbh. The abstract ones aren't bad, I just think the more specific ones are just fine because they too are open to plenty of interpretation.
(169.45 KB 900x600 drawpile_gobbo.png)

>>3340 I'd like more abstract themes, too, but experience had taught me that anons want a fairly straight forward direction. When I took over this thing 150 weeks ago, it was my intention to keep the themes vague or open to wide interpretation, and while I still do throw in more abstract themes and seasonal/holiday stuff, if it isn't a fantasy race, class or mythological creature, it generally receives little response.

>>4195 I think you misunderstood the term aliasing in the context of computer graphics. The filter that's not wanted for pixel art is called "anti-aliasing". Wikipedia says this: "In signal processing and related disciplines, aliasing is an effect that causes different signals to become indistinguishable (or aliases of one another) when sampled." Anti aliasing makes games look realistic, because it soften many harsh transitions, which would not be observed in real life. That can be very resource intensive for a computer, which is why disabling anti-aliasing in games will usually lead to much better framee rates.

>>4269 I apologize for what your eyes are about to be subjected to. I've had a vague idea of a zombie girl for maybe a month, so this theme seemed like a good time to actually draw her. Ended up doing this comic in one sitting on a whim. Apart from which I think I've done some fifty sketches over the week. Honestly, it's crazy. Even if it's all pretty crude that's a lot of volume. I think it's the most I've ever drawn any one character. I have no idea why I like her so much because the design is really rough.
>>4400 Based as fuck.

>>4400 This your first time drawing her? When I saw her in drawpile I thought she was a character you'd been playing with for a long time. Honestly she's really cute and looks really fun to draw. I'd say she's a keeper but I wouldn't know what you want to do with her.

>>4444 Yes, I think I drew her the first time last Friday. I'm not a hundred percent sure what I want to do with her, although a lot of ideas are coming to mind. The concept has already mutated into something completely different from the original plan. She is fun to draw, but the costume design definitely needs polishing and I can't really settle on how to style her face. By my count I'm now up to 117 scribbles of varying quality not counting the comic draft. Is it love?
>>4450 Had a nice "heh" at this wide lass here heh

>>4461 Drat, of course you'd pick the least original of the lot. I was referencing another artist rather heavily for the style of that one. Trying to get some more of that fun, exaggerated look into her. Just goes to show how immature I still am I guess.
I don't want to create a new thread yet since I'm not sure what the convention is, but do you guys do inktober and/or are interested in doing it? If so, do you guys create a prompt specifically for loomis or is it the usual prompt from the site? I figure we'll need to decide on a prompt soon so people can look ahead and think of something to draw before it starts. I'm a beginner when it comes to all of this, but inktober is pretty similar to how I'm practicing now though I'm pretty burnt out atm. I figure the prompts would be a good change of pace though in terms of what I draw. I know there's a weekly alternative, but that's basically already happening now.
>>4487 You could make an Inktober thread, but the original artist appears to have killed it so I doubt it will get much traction.

>>5257 Thought I'd do another version of >>1108 to measure my progress since last year. Or something like that. It took me less than half the time of the previous one, but then there's also less fine detail. And with this the composition was improvised on the spot in drawpile (and ultimately cropped, a lot) contrary to the old that I planned rather carefully. On the whole I'm not sure this is even better, if so only because I'm making fewer bad decisions as opposed to any significant increase in skill. There's really no reason why I couldn't have done this a year ago with a stern saying to, a brief lecture and a days worth of practice. >and I still suck at hair >>5293 Thank you
>>5312 I think it's a very nice piece, they're both good in their own way and are, for the most part, completely different (I knew it seemed familiar tho). I think the staggered linework of the old one is very nice whereas this one has discarded that in favor of stronger and more confident lines which between the two of them they have their own sort of character to it. In the previous image it is as if we are looking through the eyes of the bespectacled fella and observing the female character and setting with a sense of emotional warmth, whereas the newer picture is more like a view from a third person perspective that is interpreting the scene in a more utilitarian, objective way like a movie director would. IMHO they are both strong pieces created under different conditions, circumstances and intentions.

>>5312 Looking looking like some major improvement anon. I would say you should be more bold with your shadows maybe, right now it looks just a bit too bright to me. Dark to light progresses logarithmically not linearly, so your darks should be really dark and your brights can very gently between each other. This is just a simple level adjustment so some nuance is lost, but I guess you can judge whether or not you like the levels of brightness in the original.
