10th Birthday Preparations Codexx 10/08/2023 (Sun) 23:15:48 Id: b2c19e No. 8560
8chan's 10th birthday is coming up this month, and I'd like to do something special. Community contributions will be needed. Tentatively, we are planning the following: >custom theme >movie marathon >game nights If you know CSS, we need contributors to build a 10th anniversarry theme. If you don't know CSS, please suggest good films. We were thinking of the common theme being "Banned or Censored Films", where we would air the uncensored version as a celebration of free speech. Finally, we need to decide on a game to play. Suggestions should be easy enough to host and distribute so anons don't need to jump through too many hoops to play. I'll spin up a couple servers and get them configured once a game is settled on. Of course, any other suggestions for festivities are welcomed.
>>8560 Congratulations for braving it this far, 8chan! How about writing a WHOLE big document on how you got here and give a big middle finger to 8kun by insulting them and mentioning them, too? Some stuff from the site history thread's welcome, too!

>>8560 >We were thinking of the common theme being "Banned or Censored Films", where we would air the uncensored version as a celebration of free speech. Kite seems like a given, and possibly the first episode of Dream Hunter Rem. The rest I'm pulling from this page (There's a lot more listed, but it's up to you as most are erotica): https://infogalactic.com/info/List_of_banned_films >Anything by the Marx Brothers (Banned in Germany) >Back To The Future (Banned in West Taiwan) >Barney's Great Adventure (Banned in Malaysia) >Battleship Potemkin (Banned in the U.K., Finland, France, Germany, and Spain) >Ben-Hur (Banned in West Taiwan) >Death Wish (Censored in the U.K.) >Dr. Strangelove (Banned in Finland) >Goldfinger (Banned in Israel) >Hardcore Henry (Banned in Malaysia) >High School DxD (Banned in New Zealand) >Ikki Tousen (Banned in New Zealand) >In the Realm of the Senses (Banned in Belgium and Japan) >Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (Banned in India) >Monty Python's Life of Brian (Banned in Chile, Malaysia, Ireland, Norway, and Singapore) >No Escape (Banned in Cambodia) >Oliver Twist (Banned in Israel) >Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (Censored in West Taiwan) >Rambo (Banned in Burma) >Shrek 2 (Banned in Israel) >The Da Vinci Code (Banned in Pakistan, West Taiwan, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Pakistan, the Philipines, Samoa, Singapore, and the Solomon Islands) >The Evil Dead (Banned in the U.K. and Singapore) >The Exorcist (Banned in the U.K. and Singapore) >The Hunger Games (Banned in Vietnam) >The Prince of Egypt (Banned in Malaysia) >The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (Banned in Australia, The U.K., Malaysia, Norway, Singapore, Sweden, Germany, Iceland, and Finland) >Titanic (Banned in Germany) >We Were Soldiers (Banned in Vietnam) If you want my suggestion, let's try to watch the films in such a way that as many countries as possible are list at least once for censoring/banning a movie. AFAIK, these seem to be only films ever nationally banned in the U.S.: >Convention City >Ecstasy >Häxan >Hillary: The Movie >I Am Curious (Yellow) >Ossessione >The Profit >The Yes Men Fix the World Also, if Anons are looked for banned/censored vidya to play: https://infogalactic.com/info/List_of_banned_video_games https://infogalactic.com/info/List_of_regionally_censored_video_games
>>8560 the fact you called this site 8chan doesn't make it 8chan so I don't know why you would be celebrating the anniversary of a different site. there have been at least a dozen other spamboards trying to ape 8chan's name and this is just one of them, a spamboard trying to ape 8chan's name.
>>8570 Why not just celebrate each year 8moe is up instead? Seems like that would make more sense and annoy far fewer people.
>>8567 >High School DxD >(Banned in New Zealand) Damn, New Zealand is cucked.
>>8560 Release a new software update
>>8567 Why the fuck was Titanic banned in Germany? Did they just glance at the plot description and think the ship being sunk by an iceberg was ab antisemitic dogwhistle?
>>8578 https://infogalactic.com/info/Titanic_(1943_film) >Despite the fact that a British company had already released a German-language film about the RMS Titanic, the film was commissioned by Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels with the intent of showing not only the superiority of German filmmaking, but also as a propaganda vehicle which would show that British and American capitalism was responsible for the disaster >... >Although the film had a brief theatrical run in parts of German-occupied Europe starting in November 1943, it was not shown within Germany by order of Goebbels, who feared that it would weaken the German citizenry's morale instead of improving it. Goebbels later banned the playing of the film entirely, and it did not have a second run. >... >Titanic was re-discovered in 1949, but was quickly banned in most western countries. Shortly after the war, the film, dubbed in Russian, was screened across the Eastern Bloc as a "trophy film." After the 1950s, Titanic went back into obscurity, sometimes showing on German television. In 1992, a censored, low quality VHS version was released in Germany. This version deleted the strongest propaganda scenes, watering down its controversial content. Finally, in 2005, Titanic was completely restored and, for the first time, the uncensored version was released in a special edition DVD by Kino Video.
>>8571 Dude, site is 8chan. The path of >>annoy far fewer people was never an option and even if it was the site couldn't choose that option without it losing its identity. Hell, the fact you even suggested that makes me think you're either too young or too "old" for this place (anymore, as applicable). >>8567 Kite is pretty good and the reason for it being banned in Norway lines up pretty well with the events that led to this site's creation, definitely a good choice. Evil Dead is also fitting for the season. I'd recommend against making the theme too CENSORED/BANNED heavy, this is a survival celebration. Some movies more in the vein of Band of Brothers would be fitting. As for games, I remember you talking off-hand about hosting a PSO server. I don't know how much work that is (I know Private Servers for PSO have been around forever so I figure it is a pretty well trod path) but it would be nice for some of the newfaggots who never got the chance to play, it also has a Halloween Event in the files. Not sure how it would work running something so progression focused for such a short time though...
>>8560 what day does it even fall on? I want to help but work keeps getting in the way
>>8572 Why this anime in particular? Is it because high school is in the name? Are they that retarded?
>>8567 The exorcist and The evil dead seems like great options.
>>8580 >site is 8chan No, not really. It's an 8chan spinoff with the same name.
You don't really like free speech though. You censor opinions you dislike all the time. <deleting spam is censorship Not talking about that. <Deleting niggerpill is censorship Not talking about that either. You know exactly what you do, and it is fundamentally anathema to freedom of speech.
>>8579 Interesting, I'd watch it. My own suggestions for banned/censored films: The Birth of a Nation Bad Lieutenant (1992) The Death of Stalin From Dusk till Dawn >>8587 It's a spiritual successor. Some boards here have the same communities as the original 8chan. Certainly more of a successor than the desolate Qoomer hellhole that is 8kun.
>>8588 Board Owners can moderate however they like, if you don't like it then make your own board.
Brothers idk exactly what this is or what half of you are saying but real life isn't that scary and I just looked it up and no one could possibly be this allergic to pussy ik its scary the first couple times but trust it ain't half bad once you start getting used to it.
>>8560 >any other suggestions for festivities are welcomed. I suggest a public suicide pact. It would be fucking amazing if we all go out into a public place and kill ourselves in the exact same way at the same exact time,
>>8592 Kek >>8594 Whinny retard.
>>8595 >replying to that post No, anon, you are the retarded.
>>8565 I was also going to say "make the site viewable to Google Search," but...
>>8560 While I am thankful for the site as always across all variations, I think there has been too much shenanigans behind the scenes to be cause for celebration. Mark gave up a paid salary seems a little too suspicious and having 8kun become basically a Q focused place would make sense for both /v/ and the q stuff to not overlap with gay ops pitting them against one another. In the future, it is going to be impossible to know if you are talking to a bot unless the conversation is real specific to taste and experience with specific games that isn't easily readable for the bot. Instead of celebrating our wandering desert past which might turn out to be shenanigans, lets prepare for our upcoming fight. We need to hone our tastes of what is good and what games are not. I've seen a lot of suspicious tastes and takes on terrible games and I frankly do not care for it. However, that fact that a site still exist is cause for celebration everyday, you will know what I mean down the road I suspect. So congrats.
>>8600 >everyone should conform perfectly and never disagree on the essence of what makes a good game There are about a 100 more important things to improve the site than playing arbiter of "taste".
>>8601 and yet playing arbiter of taste takes precedence over everything else because the main concern is creating a hugbox and not improving the site. that anon has the right mindset he just probably doesn't like nintendo enough to fit in.
>>8580 >As for games, I remember you talking off-hand about hosting a PSO server. Anyone going to include semi banned/censored games like the adult Atari games, Satan's Hollow, Maniac Mansion NES, etc., etc.?
Naming movies and games is all well and good. But someone has to actually download and stream these right? Or is codexx going to do it?
>>8560 Wait! I know! How about a language filter so we can't see Hispachan's announcements and boards?
>>8581 >what day does it even fall on? this, what day is the celebration? >>8595 samefag
>>8560 >We were thinking of the common theme being "Banned or Censored Films", where we would air the uncensored version as a celebration of free speech. The only thing I can think of are the Looney Toons/Merrie Melodies shorts that were banned for having racist humor and nigga stereotypes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censored_eleven >we need to decide on a game to play In >>>/vj/651 they mentioned Minetest (with MineClone 2) and SuperTuxKart. The interesting thing about both games is that they work on any potato PC, are multiplatform (in the case of SuperTuxKart there is even a version for Nintendo Switch) and open source. >>8567 >>Barney's Great Adventure (Banned in Malaysia) I know the movie is crap but, what's so controversial about fucking Barney that he got banned from there. >>Ikki Tousen I saw it about 15 years ago. The only thing I remember is that it had street fights with bare fists or some shit like that. >>8592 >real life isn't that scary But it is quite confusing most of the times. >>8610 >How about a language filter so we can't see Hispachan's announcements and boards? The first thing I suppose would be solved by placing the announcements in separate tags like this: <div class="foo-announcement">Some global announcement of the board ><a href="/foo/">>>>/foo/</a></div> <div class="bar-announcement">Another global announcement but of the board ><a href="/bar/">>>>/bar/</a></div> That way you could block the announcements of boards that do not interest you with uBlock and similar. For the second, I imagine you are referring to something like Endchan's language overboards or the 8kun filter, but perhaps it is something more complex to implement.
>>8608 I can handle the films. I will either handle the server or find someone to task with configuration. >>8581 >>8611 The birthday is on the 23rd, so I was planning to run events on the 21st and 22nd to align with the weekend.
This might be out of left field, but would a sort of text based adventure be possible? Could be as simple as the one guy serving as a dungeon master of sorts and reads out the scenarios on stream, and people can join the stream under a username representing their character and submit 'commands' in the chat when its their turn. >You do it Yeah, I don't know anything about dungeon mastering myself but I figure what I suggested wouldn't require much effort for someone who already knows how. It wouldn't be a DnD or Pathfinder game, just a single dice check for all actions. It would also be only a single session long I think. A less autistic suggestion would be jackbox.
>>8613 Happy Birthday!
>>8600 >>8602 >He complains about the site becoming a hugbox while saying >we should "hone" >our "taste" Your lack or self awareness is truly something to witness. >>8614 That might be fun. On one of the boards I browse we got a guy what set up a chatbot that used Character AI as backend and we had roleplaying adventures with it. So much fun. Nevertheless, Character AI got filled with filters so I have no idea of that's still viable, It would be cool to set up an open source bot such as Kobold using moe's server as backend; however I don't know if whatever 8moe uses it would be enough for a decent model. >>8613 How about setting up a pixel planet/canvas server? any board would be able to join and mess around and we won't have to be restricted by content policies.
It's not banned, but /v/ themed movies would be Escape from NY/LA Imagine a world without Snake...
>>8614 Actually, hosting a MUD or whatnot would probably be well within the site's capacity. I figure most folks are way too Graphicsfag to appreciate such text based gameplay.
>>8612 >For the second, I imagine you are referring to something like Endchan's language overboards or the 8kun filter, but perhaps it is something more complex to implement. Why? How hard could it be?

The People vs. Larry Flynt American man in golden wheelchair dedicates his life to defending the First Amendment. It's basically 8chan the movie---if one can exist without the pig scene from Hannibal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fR6l4D47fW8
>>8614 >would a sort of text based adventure be possible? Something like >>>/hisrol/ games? That should not be as laborious as doing it through streaming. >>8616 >It would be cool to set up an open source bot such as Kobold There are also those that had been left in >>>/t/12484. >>8620 >MUD I was going to suggest the same thing, and according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-user_dungeon#Popular_variants there seem to be several to choose from. >I figure most folks are way too Graphicsfag to appreciate such text based gameplay. There are programs like Mudlet that make them more user friendly by allowing you to play with maps, keyboard shortcuts and all that (in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_MUD_clients there is a very complete list). Although if by the 23rd there is no time to set up an own MUD, then the admins might consider using a third party server like bat.org >>8621 >Why? How hard could it be? Surely Codexx or someone more familiar with how Lynxchan works could answer this better, but to get started I guess you would have to do the following: * Add an additional parameter or column to indicate the language in the database table where the board configurations are saved. * Possibly update the aforementioned table to incorporate a default value in each board. * Add extra code in the frontend that allows to indicate and update the main language of a board. * Review the 400+ boards that currently exist to indicate what their primary language is. I know it would be easier to leave that task to the owners of each board, but it would not help much since most of them are abandoned as you can see in https://8chan.moe/boards.js?boardUri=&tags=&sorting=&inactive=on * If language overboards like Endchan's were to be added, it would possibly be necessary to write a query that generates these links automatically and it would also be necessary to determine how much that affects the site's performance. * On the other hand, if something like what 8kun has was implemented, it would be necessary to check the code of Tinyboard, vichan, infinity or OpenIB to study how that filter works and then write a version adapted to Lynxchan. It may not seem that complicated, but it is certainly something that must require a lot of work behind it.
>>8624 >Something like >>>/hisrol/ games? I don't speak mexican so I have no idea what that is, but I assume its basically like those quest threads on /monster/ back in the day, except instead of all the anons in the thread making suggestions for what a single character each anon plays as a specific character. I suppose they have to register the character as well somehow. Any ideas for what the scenario would be? I figure it should be related to 8chan in some way. If you want a suggestion, well I don't have much practice in this area but for the sake of providing a suggestion here's what I got: Antia is assmad about feminist frequency dying so she steals all of /v/'s games, now you have to go get them back. Maybe that's too /v/-centric.
>>8625 >I assume its basically like those quest threads on /monster/ back in the day, except instead of all the anons in the thread making suggestions for what a single character each anon plays as a specific character. I suppose they have to register the character as well somehow. Well basically it works like this: 1. Someone creates a new thread (the OP, who would be like a kind of GM) where he explains what the game is about, the rules (if there are any) and something else. In addition to that, a model of character sheet is left for those who want to join the role. 2. Those interested should post the character sheet left by OP and complete it with their own data, which usually includes things like power/strength/intelligence points and similar, character name, a brief description of the character (sometimes an image, but I think it's usually optional), profession in the game world and other shit (what is requested may vary from one role to another). The Name field is used so that everyone can identify themselves during the game. 3. Once there is a minimum number of players registered, OP sends a post explaining an event or occurrence that involves X or Y character or all of them at the same time. 4. The corresponding anons must respond to the post of the previous point explaining how their character reacts or what their character does and, if necessary, rolling the dice. 5. Returns to point 3 where OP responds to the characters actions. 6. The game ends when a victory condition is met (if any), all characters die during the game or all anons stop posting. Maybe I'm forgetting something, but it seems to me that covers the important thing. By the way, if you are serious about it, maybe it wouldn't hurt to ask the hisrolers at >>>/hisrol/1 to give you some advice since they have experience in this subject (if I'm not mistaken, they have been here since 2021).
>>8626 Maybe ask someone from >>>/tg/ to act as game master. They do have an rpg group.
Hi, newfag here. Can I ask when the specific date of the anniversary is?
>>8628 Officially, October 23rd. Since that is a Monday, festivities are planned for the weekend prior.
>>8629 Thanks.
>>8626 If I have to do it then it would be best to simplify it to one character, so just a standard quest thread then. And even if someone else were to be DM it would probably better to do above approach anyway. The original idea was too ambitious. Thing is, I live in the opposite timezone of burgerland AND I have a job. So it isn't really practically possible for me to do so. I did come up with a "plot" of sorts. But even providing that I understand that its still asking other people to do a lot. I might have time to run a quest thread on Christmas though, so I guess I'll put this idea on hold till them. Sorry for wasting post count. >>8627 I could try but the one here is basically a bunker. I suspect the only place I could find users equipped to DM would be on smug, and they don't take kindly to "blacked.gov".
>>8624 >bat.org Well, apparently BatMUD fits quite well with the spirit of the chan, see this review that I found at https://store.steampowered.com/app/616920/BatMUD (an official client that they have, but it is not essential to be able to play): https://files.catbox.moe/sl0dmr.png (I have problems uploading files to the chan, if someone can post it in the thread I would appreciate it).

>>8634 I don't understand what is this guys is complaining about, a dungeon crawler when you play X files inspired missions and have to change your gender to progress while screaming NIGGERS surrounded by other shy and old nerds seems fucking fun to play.
>>8636 ratio your agenda
>>8637 Speak fucking english, you toothless, and godless, sodomite.
>>8637 What?
>>8570 He’s right
>>8629 Its currently the week prior, is anything going on?
>>8570 I'm sorry, how exactly isn't a place called "8chan" 8chan? "8chan" is just a set of characters, so how can one website with those characters in its domain have any more claim to it than others? Because it happens to be earlier? Or are you saying there's more to it than that? That 8chan is more than just a domain? I agree with you on that at least.
>>8642 are you retarded? if Facebook went down tomorrow and I snagged some other domain with "Facebook" in it and tried to build a makeshift social network there, it would be highly disingenious of me to then celebrate the 20th birthday next year
>>8643 If you were not involved with Facebook before it went down, you'd have a point. Except Acid, Mark, Codexx and crew were all heavily involved with 8chan before it went down as board owners (of the site's largest boards) and of course previous OG 8chan users flocked to their website as the replacement for 8chan which does lend to its claim of being "8chan", so your analogy kind of breaks apart and explodes just like the sad terminally-online failure who spewed it [This means (You)]
>>8642 For the same reason I've been telling spicniggers this site isn't hispachan; this site isn't 8chan either. >>8644 >Mark was /v/ BO therefore this place is nu8chan <using Mark as argument unironically lol lmao From what I know Acid and Mark worked on managing /v/ when 8prime used to be online, which is fine, I understand why they would regard moe's /v/ as 8/v/ direct succesor and keep counting the years since its creation, similarly of what the /hisrol/ guys do; but your argument falls appart once you consider they only managed a piece of a site that had dozens of boards and several communities; that's the thing, they are part of /v/ not the site as a whole. Did Coddex work on 8prime as admin or programmer? From what I know he didn't and even if he did, that wouldn't turn this place into infinitychan just because of his involvement . It's okay if you want to regard this place as "8chan's only true successor" same way a lot of chileans regard bandada as nido's continuation and they get rightfully bullied when they go over the top with that sentiment, but don't act like everybody should do it, specially giving such idiotic reasons. If I were you I would just say "It's okay whether you want to consider this site as 8chan or not" and just go on with my day.
>>8645 Get a life, dick licker.
>>8643 Facebook is just a website though. Its users are all normalfags, no different from those that use twitter or jewtube. But, in my mind at least, this is besides the point. Maybe its just me but I'm not celebrating the launching of 8chan.moe. Again, 8chan isn't a website.

>It's been fucking 10 years
Quick update. I ended up with less time during the week to make preparations, so I've gone ahead and decided to kick the event to NEXT weekend, the 27th and 28th. I was hoping to avoid any conflict with people's Halloween plans, but there is just too much to do in the next 24 hours to realistically pull it off this weekend. It also means I can write up a full schedule of festivities with some additional notice. Tentatively, we're looking to start things up mid-day on Saturday, run through the evening, and then pick things back up on Sunday. Again, more details forthcoming. Sorry I've been quiet, I've just been drowning trying to make preparations. We're testing MUDs and making sure we can actually organize something in one right now, and the movie night preparation is nearly complete, but the extra week will give us time to polish. Nobody has volunteered to make a custom CSS, and my usual suspects are quite busy, so I will see if any drawfags have time to handle a commission to mark the occasion, and maybe integrate that into our usual birthday CSS. Thank you for your understanding.
>>8624 >>8612 What? I just don't want to see any Spanish while browsing...
(471.56 KB 1600x1200 1.png)

(630.07 KB 1600x1200 2.png)

For the occasion I was thinking of making my own quest thread in the vein of those old drawfag ones. This would be the first time I've ever done this, and I've never so much as played a tabletop game, so it may be a bit shit. The premise would be similar to this insert here, except you would be playing as /v/-tan himself and it would be a mystery who stole your games. I even went to the autistic effort of drawing concept art for it. Now, I too have a job and live in a different timezone from America, which I assume most anons are from, so the thread probably wouldn't be updated until midnight for most of you. I'd try to make at least one post a day on it though. I also don't want to step on anyone's toes, so if you guys are still making an AI dungeon style thing with a similar plot then I'm find to not do this. I can even give you my notes if you'd like. In fact I'd prefer this since I'm lazy. I guess the last thing to consider is whether or not quest threads like these are still koshur, or if a certain webcomic has ruined them forever.
>>8661 Uh, are you sure you didn't mean to post that on >>>/christian/?
>>8659 If you decide to run one of these, let me know where it will be and I will link it as part of the celebrations. Let me know in the next couple days. I'm finalizing plans.
>>8667 I should have clarified that I was asking for feedback. I guess it's only natural that it should go in the /v/ thread. So, do I just make the thread like that and then tell you about it?
>>8668 Sure thing. If Mark doesn't want it then I can move it to /co/ or /tg/ or somewhere. At least one of those BOs will accept it. Shoot me an e-mail at codexx (at) cock (dot) li or drop by Rizon and /query Codexx.
(40.95 KB 1112x395 like that.png)

>>8656 ...LIKE THAT!!!
>>8670 Additional changes to language templating is needed to accomodate that in the announcements, but I have some ideas. I can't promise anything soon, but if everything goes to plan you'll be able to only see content in the language of your choosing.
