This is a locked thread for archiving the causes and outcomes of corner case rulings vis-a-vis the site's Global Rules. It may be cited as an explanation for rules and policies. The Global Rules page is the "what", this thread will archive the "why" and the "how" for specific instances.

Board Owner Support and Migration Requests
This thread is for Board Owners to get support for running their boards.
How do I create a board?
First, you should see if the board you want to create already exists. Some boards may be marked abandoned, in which case you can put in a board claim.
If the board doesn't exist, you can create one yourself. Create an account or log-in by visiting the lightning bolt symbol next to the CSS dropdown at the top of the page. Once there, make sure you have a verified e-mail address. Then, you can scroll to the bottom of the page and find the board creation section. Enter the URI, name, and a description. After you fill out the captcha and submit, you'll have your very own board.
How do I claim an existing board?
A board will be marked abandoned if the Board Owner has not logged in for a few weeks. Sometimes, this indicates they've gone missing. If the BO cannot be reached then we will hand the board over to a willing replacement.
We recommend sending an e-mail to the administration address of 8moeadmin@protonmail.com. Please include your username on the site and the board you are requesting.
How do I create custom CSS?
There is an upload field on the board settings page for custom CSS. Upload your file there.
Custom board assets such as background images, mascots, icons, music, etc should be posted in the appropriate thread on
>>>/res/. This board is for board assets only. This way, you don't need to clutter your board with a pinned asset, or worry an uploaded image will fall off the site.
How do I create custom JavaScript?
This feature is currently disabled. Soon, you'll be able to request custom JS be activated for your board. You can leave that request here.
I am moving my board in from another website. How can I request a migration?
We're happy to move or archive boards from other websites at the board owner's request. Please contact me directly at codexx@cock.li with the name of your board on this site, a link to the board on another site, and some kind of proof you are the board owner. Generally, a screenshot of your board management page or a capcoded post on the board to be imported is sufficient.
Currently we offer imports for boards on Vichan and LynxChan websites. JSChan support will arrive in the near future.
What rules do I need to enforce on my board?
Just the global rules, which are minimal and mostly consist of deleting illegal content. If your board is marked as Safe for Work (SFW), you will need to spoiler any images that show genitalia, scat, guro, etc. Globals will only police global rules on your board. You're welcome to add more rules on top of this, but you and your volunteers are responsible for enforcing them.
How do I label my board as "Safe For Work"?
Leave a request in this thread for a board to be marked as such, or send us an e-mail from your verified address. Your board must be reasonably about SFW content, and NSFW content must be spoilered so it does not show on the front page or overboard. We may label boards SFW or NSFW at our own discretion based on the average content on the board. If you would like its designation changed specifically, then please notify us of your preference.
Why was captcha enabled on my board?
If you set an automated captcha threshold in board settings, then captchas will be enabled on your board once a set number of posts/threads per hour limit is hit. The setting will not undo itself; you need to manually turn the captcha back off again each time. Still, we recommend setting a PPH captcha limit a bit above your usual peak PPH; this helps limit spam attacks.
What if my question wasn't answered here?
Reply with your question and we will try to answer as quickly as possible.

Make "disclaimer4" cookie not be session
Hey site owner, I remember you said you had to put that annoying disclaimer page on to appease your webhost, but could you please change the "disclaimer4" cookie to have a sensible expiry time (say 1 year) instead of expiring after every session? It's annoying to have to click through the disclaimer after every time we close our browser.
Since we can already change the cookie ourselves anyway, you'd just be making it smoother for us while still fulfilling your host's requirement.

8chan Broadcasting Service
This is the official support thread for
https://8chan.tv/
What is this site?
A place for anons to stream anything they'd like.
You can stream any video you'd like, and users can join chat anonymously.
Streams can also be embedded elsewhere for easy sharing.
Chat is built around XMPP, so you can connect with any Jabber client.
Streams are generic RTMP streams, so you can connect and view them directly. For example, you can watch a stream in VLC instead of on the website.
What can't it do?
The site supports uploading videos and storing clips, but these features are currently disabled. If there's strong interest, I can make it available, but I'd need a way to pay for storage space.
Why should I use this?
The goal is to provide anons with an easy, convenient way to get a media stream. Other sites actively police uploads to enforce "community guidelines". It can be inconvenient to share some media as a result.
The site isn't working well!
Leave a reply here describing the problem. If you're having performance issues, I can help diagnose. If the site is being used heavily and begins to struggle, I can download more RAM to make it go faster.
I'll be doing some streams myself in the coming weeks, so keep an eye out for announcements.

The Great Community Polling Thread - FOUR MORE YEARS
How much do you use TOR? Whether here or on other sites?
>¿Cuánto usas TOR?
https://favpolls.com/Poll/Join?code=1GWK6D
What other kind of site do you use the most?
>¿Qué otro tipo de sitio web utilizas más??
https://favpolls.com/Poll/Join?code=LS9RRK
How have the admins been doing over the past four years?
>¿Cómo están las administradoras?
https://favpolls.com/Poll/Join?code=DJB7GO
How satisfied are you with the website overall?
>¿Qué tan satisfecho está con el sitio web en general?
https://favpolls.com/Poll/Join?code=RYWZJA
Where do you get your hentai?
>¿De dónde sacas tu hentai?
https://favpolls.com/Poll/Join?code=E9LXKY
Back in the day when I used to be a Board Owner, I always liked to run occasional polls to take feedback from anons and get answers to questions about the community. With the site approaching its 4-year anniversary I'd really like to poke everyone for a minute and take some feedback and input. I'll be posting these in both English and Spanish for our hispabros too.
This thread will remain unlocked for posting for some time, so that if you feel the need to explain a poll choice that you made then you have a place to do that. Also as new poll ideas come up I will add them to the OP with the newest on top, so it may be good to check back occasionally to answer a new poll.
I must stress that these polls aren't going to be used to make decisions solely based on their results. But they will likely influence decisions in the future. Imagine that when the admins settle down to have a vote about something for the site, if the community had voted for or against a particular thing in overwhelming numbers then it will add extra weight to any admin voting the same way that the community did.

A post in hispanic board literally talking about rape toddlers? The board is full of that material (not just lolicon but people also depicting how they would fuck/rape children even babys) and when you writte your claim to the BO you get called slurs by the BO/volunteers themselves and stalked (post history checked and they make fun on your previous post) and obviously they don't do anything about it.
Also that thread is full of toddler material but I don't claim especifically the 2d but the description and apology to rape children in the posts.
The board is full with loli discusion, even books on how to attrack/have committing voter fraud for Democrats have been shared.

There's some stuff in the global rules that is unclear, contradictory, and outright antithetical to the ideals of the site, even upon further research in the
8chan Rules Enforcement and Corner Case Rulings Compendium. Acid has finally expounded upon these previously unwritten rules, clarifications, and unimplemented corrections to the global rules. I am posting them here for reference since they will eventually fall off the /v/ meta thread, including those are already clear but Acid included anyways. Acid did not capcode under this ID, just avatarfagged with Asooka, so anyone is free to claim these rules are fake and gay.

>If you're a pedo and you want to talk about your problems with it, take it to /b/
>If you want to talk about or advocate pedo shit in general, take it to /b/
>If you're talking about something else, and pedoshit ties into it somehow but isn't really the focus then its up to the board mods to decide if its on topic like usual
>It doesn't matter what the edited text of a legal 2D image says, whoever uploaded it agreed that all fictional characters in it are 18+ anyway
>If you cause problems or drama by trying to claim that legal 2D loli is pedophilia then the mods are free to do whatever they want about it, including nothing
>No kid pics on porn boards except innocent memes
>SFW kid pics okay on non-porn boards including /b/
>No lewding kid pics on /b/ or anywhere else
The first three points are very useful clarification on the newly established, "no pedophilia discussion outside of /b/ rule". Refer to Ruling 10 for more information.
>>4721
The fourth point is an irrelevant repetition of a global "rule" that isn't actually a rule, but a disclaimer of questionable value.
The fifth point corrects that it is not actually globally banned to conflate legal, fictional 2D or 3DCG artwork with pedophilia, resolving the contradiction that 2D that is explicitly allowed could itself conflate these subjects. This one is doubly important as the undoing of this unenforced-since-day-1 global rule returns the global rules back to a more free speech friendly state in which no opinion is globally banned.
The last three points, I believe, were already understood through both the global rules and Corner Case Rulings, but Acid was dealing with pedos and felt the need to reiterate these points which the pedos repeatedly choose to ignore.
Things would be a lot simpler if he just put this information clearly and explicitly in the global rules, and the more nuanced edge cases in the Corner Case Rulings, but for whatever reason, he does not. He has even been directly confronted by different people at different times over the course of months about that one global rule banning a wrongthink opinion, but refuses to change it despite it not being enforced whatsoever. I just don't understand why he can't make this simple.
Whoops, posted this in the wrong tab.

10th Birthday Preparations
8chan's 10th birthday is coming up this month, and I'd like to do something special. Community contributions will be needed. Tentatively, we are planning the following:
>custom theme
>movie marathon
>game nights
If you know CSS, we need contributors to build a 10th anniversarry theme.
If you don't know CSS, please suggest good films. We were thinking of the common theme being "Banned or Censored Films", where we would air the uncensored version as a celebration of free speech.
Finally, we need to decide on a game to play. Suggestions should be easy enough to host and distribute so anons don't need to jump through too many hoops to play. I'll spin up a couple servers and get them configured once a game is settled on.
Of course, any other suggestions for festivities are welcomed.

Translation Thread
So you want to translate the site into another language. This thread exists to provide a guide for how language packs are created and accepted.
Step #1: Where to Start
The first thing you will need is a copy of the English language pack. This provides English sentences for any text that is templated. All that means is, this is our base pack and if a piece of text is translatable then an entry should appear here.
You can find a copy of the language pack on our frontend repository on Git Gud.
Here is a direct link:
https://gitgud.io/8chan/Aleph/-/blob/dev-localization/languages/eng.json
The branch
dev-localization
should always have the latest changes, and is usually a few edits ahead of the actual site while we're between updates. That link takes you to that version of the file.
If you're familiar with git, you can clone the repo. If not, check out the "Download" button to the right of "Open Web IDE". You can get a copy of
just the English language pack.
Step #2: Editing
You will need a text editor to edit these files. There are many out there, including Vim, Atom, VSCode, and Notepad for you masochists.
The language packs are in JSON format. If you're not familiar with it, that's perfectly fine. All you need to know is that entries are formatted as such:
"name" : "value",
We want to leave the names alone (this is how LynxChan knows where to template it in) and edit the value segment. Translate these words or sentences into your native language. Feel free to use any special unicode characters that are common in this language; the website should have little trouble rendering them.
If you cannot translate everything, that's fine. There are a lot of lines and it takes time. You can leave some sentences in English so that they will still appear on the site. If you remove the line entirely, it will just display placeholder text. When you're ready to make a submission, you can move on.
Step #3: Submitting
First, you will need to name the file appropriately. If you view the existing language packs, you will see they are named things like eng, json, spa.json, and ita.json for English, Spanish, and Italian respectively. These are not arbitrary filenames. They come the ISO 639-2 specification. You can find a full list here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ISO_639-1_codes
I should mention I'm not actually sure if LynxChan relies on the B or T designation, but for the majority of languages it doesn't make a difference. On the off chance you happen to be translating for one of the few where it does, let me know and I can see if LynxChan only accepts one or the other.
Find your language's designation and name it based on that.
Finally you're ready to send the data in. Again, there are two methods depending on whether you know git or not.
If you do know git, fork the repo and push your changes somewhere on Git Gud. Then open a Pull Request to the dev-localization branch. I will review and accept the request.
If you don't know git and that sounds like a lot of nonsense to you, then you can just upload the file in this thread and I will include it in the next site update.
That's it!
It's a lot of tedious work, but it's not that hard assuming you actually speak the language. If you speak something other than English, I would encourage you to make a submission so we can grow out library of translations.
Even if a language pack already exists, it may be out of data. In that case, you will have less work to do, but your contribution is still incredibly valuable.

A Brief Reminder of Fallback Measures
Greetings.
With the recent drama passed, I have had some anons contacting me asking if there is a plan or plans on how the site would deal with any sort of major trouble or deplatforming event. Many of you who were here during the "Esther" era already know that we have multiple fallback setups, but it was suggested to me to make a post reminding the oldfags about them and informing the newfags that they exist.
If 8moe should go down for a significant time (more than a couple hours) any reason, keep an eye on the site's Twitter and the meta boards of the other imageboard sites. We'll bring updates to the inevitable topics.
>If the main domain should be deplatformed
<Use the backup domain at https://8chan.se
>If THAT somehow gets taken down, which is unlikely as its handled by the guys who handle TPB, we will spin up the https://8chan.cc domain from a Chinese "bulletproof" registrar.
>If we lose Cloudflare, the most likely weakpoint in our current setup
<We will switch over to the host's in house CDN for DDoS protection. The site will be down for a few hours to a day as the DNS records update, and we'll have to spend a day or two adjusting some settings. Not a big deal.
>Its the end of the world and all the domains got yanked.
<Access us via the .onion link and Tor Browser/Brave/Dissenter, or visit the proxies on Redchannit. We can spin up tor gateways on redchannit.net, .org, .com, and .xyz on short notice.
>The host boots us from the server.
<Unlikely, as we have a bulletproof host in a non-english speaking country and we only allow legal content. Still, if this happens we have backups of the site and two alternative pirate hosts in our back pocket just in case.
>Absolutely everything else has failed and the world is ending.
<We will spin the site up on a hidden server on a new, secret host as a tor based bunker site and fire up the Crescent Isle-based CDN we designed to provide our own DDoS protection. The 8chan.moe domain and all the rest will redirect to this CDN and become the main URLs for the tor site.
>One of the admins gets ///v& for wrongthink\\\, blackbagged, or (((assassinated.)))
<Two others stand ready to take over.
The site's tor address:
http://4usoivrpy52lmc4mgn2h34cmfiltslesthr56yttv2pxudd3dapqciyd.onion
I think that covers everything.

Can I ask (and get an answer) how does the IB convert the special syntax (like in moe) and urls to html tags? It does use some javascript library?
I tried to look at LynxChan source code but I don't even know where to start, lol.

/pe/ in /hispachan/ into an emergency
Hi, I'm looking for advices and information about the process of claim a board, in this case is the board /pe/ because the last Board Owner of that board forgot his password and Peruvians are afraid of losing the board because of inactivity.
Please, if you gave me the power to be the new B.O. of this board /pe/ it would have been fantastic.

it sucks and dead. nothing like 8chan. you can make it better by:
- decentralizing it
- doing away with boards and use hashtags instead
i honestly don't see the point of this site continuing to operate. you should just shut it down.

Translation Thread
The purpose of this thread is to provide resources for translating the website's frontend and to provide coordination between contributors as well as developers and site staff.
How does translating work?
There is an English master file in the frontend that provides words and phrases used all over the site. Pages can be adapted to pull phrases from this file. To translate to another language, you take this file as a template and translate the English sentences on the right side. You must leave the left side alone, since these are identifiers.
The current version of the English language pack can be found in the Master branch on our git repository:
https://gitgud.io/8chan/Aleph/-/blob/master/languages/eng.json
This file will be updated as more of the site is upgraded to handle translations.
How do I submit my translations?
Download the file linked above and edit some sentences to be in a language of your choosing. Then, upload that file in this thread with a brief explanation of what you changed. It's okay if you only do a few lines; any effort helps.
The English language pack is a moving target right now, but don't let that deter you! Just use the most up-to-date version you can. Some discrepancies will cause minor display issues, but they should be easy to identify and fix.
If you have any questions or require any support, please make a post detailing your problem and I will be happy to assist.

Clicking on an image expands it. Clicking it again collapses it. That is the expected behavior, so all good. However, if you click the same image again, it not only expands it, but also scrolls it to top of screen. It should not scroll to top of screen.

Video Thumbnails are not Lazy Loaded [Bug]
Thumbnails in the /v/ webm thread were not being lazy-loaded as seen in the screenshot. It loads all thumbnails on initial load, whereas it should be like the zchan screenshot - loading only whats visible and then making requests as the user scrolls down. According to
>>579206 "8moe does actually do lazy loading but for some reason it's not working for video thumbnails. If you're on tor it's specially noticeable because due to the latency you can see the thumbnails pop in for images all the time but for videos they're actually preloaded". This is likely the reason why the webm thread is unusable for mobile and will cut down load time significantly for big threads like this.

There should be hashtags instead of boards and only global mods/rules
No one should own boards here, especially imageboard-distinctive names like v, b, pol, etc. Instead of posting to /b/, users post to #b. All hashtags are moderated by the same globals mods against the same global rules. No one can be banned from posting to a hashtag. This means Jews like Mark will an hero when he can no longer remove vidoe gaem posts that he doesn't like.
The overall aesthetic of the platform would not change, and I'd argue there would be no very little change to the data model as well. Users could still browse an individual hashtag's posts in a catalog or a single feed view like they can now. As for the data model, instead of each post having a FK reference back to the board table, it's just a FK reference to a hashtag table.
Currently, BOs can ban users, but, with my proposal, users just hide content they don't want to see. If a user is spamming a hashtag, I mute them with a content filter. I can mute them globally or just for that hashtag. I can also choose to mute posts made through proxies or TOR. This way, the user becomes their own moderator rather than rely on a BO to do all their thinking for them.
This design also solves the issue of board dominance/monopolization. No single person should be able to own b, v, pol, or any board. When certain boards reach critical mass and become the defacto board for a given topic, alternate boards do not stand a chance at claiming any of that share. This is why, on the old 8chan, dysnomia and Mark were able to do anything they liked while alternatives to their boards like /vg/, /bbbb/, and /b2/ failed. It wasn't until dysnomia had gone entirely rogue and fucked up his board intentionally that /b2/ finally found success.
I would be interested in hearing arguments against this proposed design.

this is fucking annoying. i go to make a post and forget to attach an image. attach my image and it says "flood detected", likely because it does the validation on the server which counts as a request. either don't count posts that fail validation as requests or do the validation on the server... or fix whatever it is because this is really annoying

Please change your board re-claiming approach or we migrate our communities out of 8chan.moe
I shouldn't have to re-login when I'm still logged in just to prevent you from handing over the board to some troll who nukes everything. Instead of discreetly handing away the board over without providing any notice to the current BO (most of us use throwaway emails) or community to a potential board nuker, you should first actually post a thread with your admin/mod tag on that board notifying the community that someone has claimed the board and the BO has one week to re-login. For example another board /loomis/ was recently sabotaged by a new board owner (the original one was always there and posted frequently and did mod actions, but didn't re-login) who proceded delete several threads. I on principle will refuse to re-login to my own board, because that's a really stupid system you have where a BO who's still logged in can get his board stolen by a board nuker because you're not willing to make any effort to actually check whether the board even needs a new BO or not and post a notification on the board about a board claim. You are aware that you have several rivals (anoncafe, zzzchan et al.) from your childish webring drama who will exploit this process and nuke boards to bring them over to their own sites, right? If you don't change this broken policy within a week then I'll have you know that I and a few other board owners will be migrating our boards out of 8chan.moe, we all know how to do server and site administration, configure BIND9 DNS servers, find the cheapest and best VPS & domain registration deals (e.g. there are various excellent DMCA-ignoring pro-free-speech VPS providers based in Russia for example, not just your basic bitch pro-censorship globohomo Western VPS providers that you normies settle for), mask domain registration and hide identity with Bitcoin payments, set up reverse proxies, PHP programming (Lynxchan is an undocumented overengineered ANTI-MODULAR piece of trash and Node has ZERO advantage over PHP, the former of which requires a fucking server restart just to modify some code, what a garbage server runtime environment and language, I pity you having to deal with that shit, no wonder it takes days for you to figure out how to fix a simple thumbnail problem on the front-end lmao because of your piece of trash imageboard software that is hard to test and overhyped language for hipsters and corporate yuppies which by the way was never even designed for backend development but for client-side scripting, even the Node creator Ryan Dahl admitted Node was a huge mistake and is promoting Deno as a replacement), MySQL tuning, locking down several points of entry/directories with nginx for security hardening, etc. etc., so don't think we're just puffing hot air.

2.6 Changelog
Changelog 2.6.0: Libertarian Edition
Policy
You may now request your board have custom JavaScript enabled. All custom JS must be non-obfuscated and compatible with the AGPLv3 license so both users and admins can check for malicious usage. You may not redirect users off-site, nor track them in any way.
A number of pages have had their wording corrected. These pages have now been vetted by an attorney.
"Wrong or Expired Captcha" should now occur less often.
Style & Markdown
CSS has been reworked. There should now be fewer files and a simpler hierarchy to traverse, along with less contradictory rules. This may break compatibility with some themes, but fixing them should be easier than making them. Please look at any of the site themes for an example of how to style a custom CSS file.
Dice rolls now support adding and subtracting, and have had some bug fixes.
Lain Theme Added
Moe OS Theme Added
Secret Themes Added
Fixes
Fixed some features not working correctly with replies added by WebSockets.
Captchas should no longer reflow the page
Filtered threads will now be hidden on the catalog.
Filtering by ID should no longer filter the thread if the ID is associated with the original post.
Functionality
Trash Bin has replaced Deletion. Posts removed by moderators will now be moved to a trash bin so they can be restored.
Removed posts will now be auto-filtered when updating via WebSockets.
Files can now be stripped of their name on disk. Currently must be applied to all files on a post, and it will replace their name with their hash. We are interested in feedback regarding per-file options and generating/masking the name instead of using a hash.
Hiding files should now work without JavaScript.
Inline Replies have arrived! Please let us know how they can be improved.
Bottom Replies have also arrived.
Files above a board's file size limit will now be flagged before you begin uploading.

[Request] Replace the Board List with the Webring Menu
8chan.moe's boards page sucks all kinds of ass
>Search is broken

>No way of ungrouping boards from sites
>Looks ugly as hell
>Hidden behind a nondescript sandwich icon which links to a new page, instead of just being a list on the topbar
Can't it be replaced by the plugin used by most of the other sites on the webring, either the popup menu or the dropdown one? They're both vastly superior to this. Thanks.

Operation Organic Activity
Since you faggots (Cakekike and Acid) are already prone to degenerate social media shit-posting, I figure it's time to put those normalnigger proclivities to use and attempt to generate activity in a minimally intrusive manner. This ought to be done through utilizing the various social networks and platforms that have been developed and grown over the recent years, such as federated pleroma/mastodon instances like shitposter.club, peertube, and decentralized LBRY video hosting either through the odyssey platform or desktop application.
>the fuck would you even post to these places to generate activity
An "official" pleroma 8moe account could post every time a new site update occurs, or the result of hunger game events for boards. Hypothetically it could even be configured to make an announcement every time a new board is created, but that's probably a bad idea considering this site has zero curation on board creation and announcing [Insert pedonigger board here] is god awful optics. Regardless the objective is to generate discussion and discovery about the site in a way that attracts new users that are less likely to be completely cancerous faggots. And by consistently "advertising" the site on platforms that are generally used by autistic individuals to begin with you can maximize the quality of users attracted.
Advertising the site on places like twitter and reddit is met with disdain for good reason, the kind of retard using these sites is not the kind of person anyone here wants to interact with. But if the advertising campaign is focused exclusively on platforms that align more closely with the ideals of an imageboard user, privacy, security, anonymity, decentralization/federation, it'll increase site activity while inviting users that are most likely to conform to the existing culture.
Anons should discuss which platforms are acceptable, and how they should best be used. A pleroma instance, shitposter.club for example, could be used for site updates, hunger game announcements, and things like that. Maybe even announcing special event threads. An LBRY account could post video content created by anons, such as game night clips or other OC related to the site.
Shilling campaigns are a double edged sword, but I think if we have productive critical discussions about how best to approach it ITT we can do it right.

Form inputs on this site autocomplete data that I've entered into other websites like usernames, email addresses, etc. This poses a risk to accidentally partially doxing myself. The issue is that the autocomplete attribute on form inputs is set to "none" when it should be set to "off".
I had to write a userscript to add the proper attribute and now it's no longer auto-completing. It also prevents the captcha from trying to autocomplete which was really annoying.

Looking for a Few Good Men - Global Mod Recruitment Drive
EDIT: RECRUITMENT ENDING SOON
We will stop taking applications at the end of this week. If you're still considering applying, please do so soon.
With the LynxChan 2.6 upgrade finished and a little bit less on our plate, we're now ready to start taking on more global volunteers. I want to lay out a bit of what you can expect:
>We're looking for autists who lurk the site a lot. The more time you spend with a tab open, the better.
>We're especially looking for at least 2 people in the 4am-8am America time (CST) hours.
>We're looking for people who give a shit and want to help, but who aren't looking to be overbearing mods.
>Globalling is low-volume but high uptime. It's easy, but being vigilant can be boring.
>You need to be dependable. Everyone takes breaks, but you can't just no-show for weeks at a time. The site needs you, and you need to act like it.
If these things are mostly agreeable to you, please contact us at 8moeadmin@protonmail.com with the following:
>Your account name (or TBD if you don't have one yet)
>IRC handle (if applicable)
>Have you ever modded before? If so, for how long and on what site? You don't have to name the board if you wish to keep it private.
>What your most common available hours are to do your jannying.
>A sentence or two describing why you wanna help and why we should trust you.
>We don't need or care about your dox, but if we like you we might ask for a phone number in case of site emergencies.
Here is what Global Modding is like.
>Tab open, occasionally refresh site homepage looking for CP or obvious spam, such as PPH shooting up to 500+ for no reason.
>Check Global Management -> Open Reports page. Quick scan for CP and other Global Rule violations. Ignore all the other reports - as a global they are not your job. Leave them to BOs and their staff.
>If you identify a problem such as an ongoing spam attack or a persistent CP poster, notify the admins and spend a while camping out on the Latest Postings - Sitewide page to help clean it up.
>Every once in a while, team up with the rest of the global staff to deal with "all hand on deck" shitstorm events.
You should make the regular, boring sweeps 2 to 4 times an hour and clean up things you find as needed. Most of the time there will be nothing, but when things do come you might spend 10 minutes scrubbing it into the trash or camping on a persistent spammer until he gets bored. You can shitpost with us in the dev chat and get other people to help if you need it.
What you get in return for this important service:
>A steady diet of Hot Pockets
>Scorn and ridicule from anons :^)
>Sekrit insight into the backend of the site and whatever we're working on down the pipe
>Secret, arcane Internets knowledge and all the myriad and undefined powers that go with it
>A direct line to the admins for bug reports, concerns, opinions, and suggestions
>The satisfaction of knowing that you, personally, are helping keep this place alive and online
>Our gratitude. No, literally. Our global mods are awesome.
Feel free to ask questions in this thread if you would like to know more.

Before I go over the usual boring stuff I'll get straight to the issue of the day: /hebe/, their content on /b/ and elsewhere on the site, free speech, and the recent waves of spam.
In short, our position is this: Pedos have a right to free speech, but do not have a right to possess or share unlawful content especially on our site. Global Rule 2 has always been quite strong, in my opinion and gave the staff and BOs some leeway to use common sense when removing material or banning users who post borderline material. Leeway is good. Good faith is also good. It means when we doubt what you post, it gets removed but you don't get banned, we don't assume you're a pedo, and nothing else comes of it as long as you don't repost it. Users have a little freedom to make honest mistakes, because the law in this area is murky, grey, and largely untested (yet must be followed.) So we do the best we can.
Unfortunately this leeway has been translated into ambiguity about the content allowed under Global 2, which allowed for the rise of /hebe/, the appearance of their target audience, and outsiders from places as varied as /tvch/, /cow/, anonib, and "CIA Triad Security LLC" some of whom have proceeded to cause problems sitewide on both that board and the global level for going on three days. Much of this drama is manufactured in my opinion, and our concern level is low but we owe our anons and board owners a clear response. Please direct your attention to the new, much more specific Global Rule 2. This now hard-codifies what our base restrictions are and have been, but names the particulars. BOs are free to take a harsher stance if they so choose, but these will be the guidelines for global enforcement going forward.
That said:
We will not be deleting or removing /hebe/ so long as they operate in accordance with the rules. If they wish to have a board purely for discussion of their preferred interests, it is not our place to judge them for that or deny them provided they are in accordance with the Global Rules and the law. Free speech means free speech. Linking or making available unlawful material is already itself unlawful, and is covered fully by Global Rule 1 already.
The rest of the site meta stuff
Very little to report, honestly. We have received no warrants or court orders since the last update, the hosts and server are doing well, we took on the nice little community at /hisparol/ who have made themselves at home and the site has experienced two months of steady growth. Codexx is working on further improvements for Lynxchan 2.6, and I have a server OS upgrade scheduled for sometime next month that will probably cause a day of downtime, which we will announce well in advance.
If anything comes to mind that I forgot, I'll edit it into this OP. As usual this will be merged into the meta sticky after a week of visibility. Onward and upward.

/b/ 404's
When typing it into the URL bar it brings up a 404 page.
This doesn't happen when clicking on a link from elsewhere on the site (only works when there is a referrer header?).
And the 404 page is different to the one shown when you go to a board that doesn't exist. Pic related.

Delete the boards marked as Abandoned that haven't had a single post in the last three months. This will save resources (storage, shekels, global volunteer manpower), free URIs for people who want to use them on different boards, free space on the board list, and reduce the amount of potential attack vectors for bad actors (like glowniggers posting illegal content on an unmaintained board or trolls parking URIs for no real purpose).

Moving a board from another website to 8chan
Hello, Acid,
I've been mulling over your proposal for quite some time now and I really think it's in my and my users' best interests if we joined you with our own bunker. I'd like to ask if you could help out with moving the currently available threads onto our equivalent board on 8chan, and on that note, would like to understand how the system for mirroring posts actually works.
I don't want to disclose WHICH board it is yet because some of my users may not like it in the immediate and I need a few days to mediate with our group. Thanks in advance, lad. We're in this picture if you're wondering. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out who we are by a process of elimination.

Any interest in lewds/porn hosting sites by the administration?
Has Acid and co ever thought about making porn hosting sites?
technically 8chan can host lewds but the filesize limit obviously prevents most video content from being posted Or would it just be too much hassle with the exorbitant costs, probable lack of income, and all the dangers and efforts of opponents that come with it?
Was just thinking about it with the fall of Pornhub (and by extension, all pornhub-related networks which is a lot of places, and more will come with Mastercard and Visa likely not stopping)
Gallery or booru sites would be convenient too, what with the logistical inconveniences of using imageboards to browse for lewds (formatting of the site and whatnot), though I was mainly thinking about video content with this post since the former at least seem safe for now (but that could easily change as well), but something like a gallery style viewer would be cool, and it would be nice to contribute to a less autistic place than sad panda (and by extension, make lewds a little more decentralized in doing so)

Take Over /jp/
Does anyone want to take over /jp/? Now that /japan/ exists and has taken the place of a board for Japanese culture, I was thinking of making /jp/ into a place for Japanese-speakers, such as like /de/, however I don't know enough Japanese to have a full conversation in one, let alone run and moderate a board in Japanese. So if anyone wants to take it over for the purpose of this, I'd be willing to hand it over. Just share your username here or email me at NekoNyuh@cock.li if you want it. Also, if possible, please provide some proof that you can actually speak and read Japanese.

Redchannit / Project Crescent Isle 2.0

Welcome to the official Project Crescent Isle thread. This thread is

In the classic Dreamcast RPG Skies of Arcadia, the heroes are a band of Blue Rogue air pirates; swashbucking heroes pursued across the world by an evil empire. In the middle of the game the party discovers a tiny, uncharted island in the corner of the map and they turn it into a hidden fortress paradise. A base of operations, safely hidden from their enemies in a place called Crescent Isle.
What is Crescent Isle?
It is a clearnet portal to 8chan's tor server (.onion) created by combining a specially configured proxy server called Tor2Web with an HTTP Accelerator cache, all hosted on a dedicated server and with its own domain.
What does it do?
It allows anons to potentially post on any number of imageboard .onions from the clearnet, using any browser and viewing/posting from anywhere, without needing to use Tor Browser themselves. And they can do it almost as fast as using the site on the clearnet due to the aggressive dynamic caching system that front-loads things like thumbnails and CSS.
How does it work?
There is a separate server that is currently running the open source Tor, Tor2Web, Varnish Cache, and Hitch Proxy software programs, all specially configured to play nice together and with 8chan's LynxChan software. The system uses a single .onion site as a default (this site in our case) but through the use of special custom subdomains a single Crescent Isle server can proxy traffic for any number of imageboard sites.
When you go to the site running Crescent Isle, it connects you via encrypted HTTPS to the proxy server, then Tor encrypts your traffic and connects you to the .onion site. Due to Varnish caching things like CSS, HTML, and thumbnails the site will load and function much faster than it normally would if you were connecting over Tor yourself.
What is Redchannit?
A meme, son. "Redchannit" or "Redchanit" was the name of the evil darknet site used by the badguys in the infamous #GamerGate Law and Order episode "Intimidation Game." The 2.0 version of the system has now been launched on a new server at:
https://redchannit.com
How is Redchannit's Crescent Isle system configured?
The server currently has no subdomains and only serves 8chan, but we can still add other sites as time goes by. We no longer use Vanwanet and the server has been upgraded to a duocore machine with 4GB of RAM. All logging has been disabled apart from a transient cache debug log that stays in active memory and overwrites itself several times a day. Nothing is logged to disk. Varnish has been configured to send proper X-REFERER headers so that the site will now work the same as on clearnet, including mod tools and user accounts. The site uses a LetsEncrypt certificate and handles its own HTTPS now instead of needing a site like Cloudflare to do it for us.
Why is this system important?
>Server protection. The actual webserver can stay hidden, safe, and anonymous on the Tor network.
>Public portal. Even with the imageboard itself buried in the Tor network, it still has a public face with a human readable domain and doesn't require special tools to access.
>Deniability. As a public proxy Redchannit hosts nothing, stores nothing, logs nothing, and caches only to industry standards.
>Deplatforming-resistant. The argument that "this public proxy is capable of displaying content from shitlord site X" is a much harder sell to a business than "shitlord site X has Y content on its server pls deplatform." Public proxies are everywhere and even picky registrars and hosts rarely try to hold them accountable for displayed content that they do not store, especially for legal content.
>Clearnet fallback. In the event of a catastrophic deplatforming of the main site, Crescent Isle can be used (or brought online on a different server) very quickly if domain names are made public in advance.
>One or All. A single imageboard can run a Crescent Isle system very cheaply to serve as the front door to its service. It needs only a mediocre processor and ~4GB of RAM. The prototype was built and tested on a $15 DigitalOcean Droplet before being moved to a production server, and it works with Cloudflare's free DDoS protection for those so inclined. For a small, low traffic site you could run the portal on a laptop in your kitchen. A "full monty" install like Redchannit can serve as a central portal to many different sites as well, like a tor based webring or "onion ring."
>Free, open source. All of the required software is open source and free of charge. The magic is in the slightly unusual configurations which will also be made available for free, by us. If you don't trust Redchannit for whatever reason, I'll show you how to set up your own Crescent Isle.
What's required
>A VPS or Droplet with at least 4GB of RAM and a not-shit processor
>A domain name for the portal
>Debian 10 with Sudo and Nano installed
>Tor, Tor2Web, Varnish, and Hitch installed
>Properly set up tor2web.conf and varnish default.vcl config files, a letsencrypt.vcl file for Hitch
>The .onion address of your imageboard(s)
>Enough IT knowledge to do basic things like service port configurations, systemd configurations, and a little bit of C programming language for the Varnish .vcl configuration syntax.
How did you come up with this?
Zeronet has clearnet proxy sites that have been around for a while. I conceived of something like that for Tor to make a distributed imageboard system resulting in the first concept pic above. Doing further research I learned that Tor proxies like onion.ws already exist, but are widely shit on by the tor community because of them using tracking cookies and Google ads, logging and selling user IPs, eavesdropping on logins and cookies, and other sketchy things to pay their bills. Deciding the only safe way was to do it in-house, I looked into adapting their same system (tor2web) to do what I wanted. Once I got it working through a lot of trial and error (due to tor2web being effectively abandoned), combining it with an HTTP accelerator cache to speed up user experience was my idea.
The End Result
You can browse and post on 8chan anonymously via the Tor network from any clearnet connection anywhere, almost as fast as on clearnet, and the proxy and the site server both are far more resistant to being deplatformed. If you use DNS over HTTPS on top of this I think you're about as anonymous as you can get. If the .moe and .se domains get taken down you can access the site via Redchannit, and if Redchannit gets taken down another one can pop up in minutes as opposed to us having to move and restore the entire site itself. From a user standpoint the only things different are that opening files will be slightly slower due to Redchannit having to pull them from across the Tor network, and all Redchannit users will appear as Tor users with the black "00000" ID.
What's Next?
I'm waiting for the final release of Debian 11, which is coming in a few months, to release detailed setup instructions for the new 2.0 version. This is because all the core pieces will be available right in the repositories, so all you'll need is the Tor2Web software. We are also looking into implementing unique visible IDs for Tor users, which will allow other anons to tell them apart. This system will work with Lynxchan 2.5's new Proof of Work captcha system to control spam over both Tor and Redchannit.

Project Crescent Isle: Early Launch Edition
Hello everyone.
INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS: >>825
I've been teasing this project for a couple of months as I worked out all the implementation details, so here's the payoff.
It is a clearnet portal to 8moe's onion created with the implementation of a specially configured Tor2Web multiproxy coupled to an aggressive HTTP accelerator cache, and protected from DDoS by a CDN.
What does it do?
It allows anons to potentially access any number of imageboard .onions from the clearnet, using any browser and viewing/posting from anywhere. And they can do it almost as fast as using the site on the clearnet due to the CDN and aggressive dynamic caching system.
How does it work?
There is a separate server that is currently running the open source Tor, Tor2Web, and Varnish Cache software programs, all specially configured to play nice together and with LynxChan software. The system uses a single .onion site as a default (8moe in our case) but through the use of specially configured custom subdomains a single Crescent Isle server can proxy traffic for any number of imageboard sites on an opt-in basis.
When you go to the site running Crescent Isle, it connects you via encrypted HTTPS to the proxy server, then Tor encrypts your traffic and connects you to the onion site. Due to the HTTP accelerator caching things like CSS, HTML, and thumbnails the site will load and function much faster than it normally would connecting over just Tor.
What is Redchannit?
A meme, son. "Redchannit" or "Redchanit" was the name of the evil darknet site used by the badguys in the infamous #GamerGate Law and Order episode "Intimidation Game." Since I owned a couple domains for it I used one for the first Crescent Isle server:
https://redchannit.net
How is Redchannit's Crescent Isle system configured?
For the more technical among you: The multiproxy works but is currently disabled by leaving the subdomains blanked, and the tor2web server is locked to HTTP mode, receiving HTTPS connections courtesy of Vanwanet due to lacking support for SSL termination in Varnish cache. The Translation mode is locked to 8moe's onion address and the debug log disabled. The Varnish cache is not running any of the optional logging systems, and varnishlog is not set up to log to disk. There is a temporary log that is held in active memory and overwrites itself. The system is configured to not pass valid XFF headers, REAL-IP or REFERER. This gives the most security and anonymity for users, but it means that User Account functions are unavailable through the proxy and have to be used via Tor Browser.
Why is this system important?
>Server protection. The actual webserver can stay hidden, safe, and anonymous on the Tor network.
>Public portal. Even with the server itself buried in the Tor network, it still has a public face with a human readable domain and doesn't require special tools to access.
Doing further research I learned that Tor proxies like onion.ws already exist, but are widely shit on by the tor community because of them using tracking cookies and Google ads, logging and selling user IPs, eavesdropping on logins and cookies, and other sketchy things to pay their bills. Deciding the only safe way was to do it in-house, I looked into adapting their same system (tor2web) to do what I wanted, and I nearly forked it until I figured out that I could use their byzantine config system to make it cooperate out of the box. Once I got it working through a lot of trial and error (due to tor2web being maligned by the tor community and very nearly being abandonware with dead support channels and no updates in 9 months), combining it with an HTTP accelerator cache to speed up user experience was my idea.
The End Result
You can browse and post on 8moe anonymously via the Tor network from any clearnet connection anywhere, almost as fast as on clearnet, and the proxy and the site server both are far more resistant to being deplatformed. If you use DNS over HTTPS on top of this I think you're about as anonymous as you can get. If the domain gets taken down you can access the site via Redchannit, and if Redchannit gets taken down another one can pop up in minutes as opposed to reworking the entire site itself. From a user standpoint the only things that do not work are post editing and deletion due to the referer header being invalid. Board owners and moderators will need to use Tor Browser to access their tools for the same reason.
What's Next?
I was going to release this in ~10 days, so there are a couple remaining little QoL bugs and things I've yet to fix/tweak. There are experimental ideas on how to make the proxy work and feel more like the clearnet site in regards to user function to explore, and I'm writing up detailed setup guides for a minimalist and a full monty install so it'll be far easier for other imageboard sites to copy what I've done. The system will work closely with the LynxChan tor-control addon that we're developing to allow somewhat better moderation of Tor users. If other sites would like to opt-in to Redchannit they can contact me via the usual admin email.
