Game of the Month #12 (September Edition): Tomato Adventure (GBA) Anonymous 09/06/2024 (Fri) 09:20:06 Id: 0c00c0 No. 1010309
Happy Anniversary, Game of the Month threads! >What is this? This is exactly how it sounds: A game is chosen each month (which will be relatively or totally obscure on purpose) with hopes of bringing new avenues of playing potential to anons with narrow video game perspectives. The goal isn't necessarily to pick bad games, but obscure ones nobody, or as few people as possible, have played. You can play the game and then use that fact as bragging rights to others! You can use it to broaden your backlog horizons! or you can forget about it. It's up to you. THIS MONTH: Tomato Adventure, quirky RPG for the GBA from AlphaDream, the same people who brought you Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga! >Where do I get this? English-patched game https://www.upload.ee/files/17066745/Tomato_Adventure__English_.gba.html https://moddinghaven.com/mediawiki/index.php/Tomato_Adventure_mods/Uncensored_Patch Emulators Mesen (multi-system emulator for Game Boys, NES, SNES, Game Boy, PC Engine, Master System/Game Gear) https://github.com/SourMesen/Mesen2 https://archive.org/download/gba_bios_202206/gba_bios.zip/gba_bios.bin (makes games boot) mGBA (emulator for Game Boys) https://mgba.io/downloads.html Older Patch https://cdromance.org/gba-roms/tomato-adventure-japan/ Contains the JP game and the English patch. GUIDELINES FOR FUTURE GotMs: Poll for MONTH YEAR: https://poal.me/6a5prg If you do not like any of the games in the poll, you can either add a new entry manually, or reply to the OP with a different suggestion. Don't come crying to me if you don't like the game, blame democracy. If you DO suggest a game though, please, report all relevant information on the game (magnet/dl link, interesting mods, guides, tutorials on tech, speedrun etc.). Feel free to suggest any and every game you can think of, bonus points if it's games that barely anyone has played or talks about in the [Current Year] or that fit the month thematically. However, try and follow these rules: 1) No game that relies on modern hardware. If the game cannot be pirated or emulated properly, or no working emulator for the game exists, most people won't be able to enjoy it, rendering the thread kind of pointless; 2) No always-online games, meaning no live service games or mobile games that are dependent on external servers, unless a backup instance of said servers has been created by its fans or the offline content is significantly larger than the online content; 3) For multiplayer games, provide only free to play games that let players create their own servers, or games with local multiplayer that can be set up to play online (requires someone to be a hostfag, or, and may Allah forgive me for uttering these words, using Parsec); 4) No game that requires gimmicky controls to be enjoyable (guitar pedals, Wiimotes, cameras etc.) unless they can be easily remapped or translated into some other control scheme. (268.42 KB 2413x1413 Gear-Yo chart.png)

At the start I gathered and analyzed data on the Gear-Yo by choosing it from DeMille's Gimmick menu then pressing Start to enter a practice mode. I'm sharing my autism. To red zone press A when the light blue bar right of the dark blue bar overlaps the red bar. Both blue bars extend and accelerate together. The light bar preindicates by 1 frame the position of the dark bar. The Gear-Yo has 2 attack stats, X and O. I assume X misses while O lands as those appear on fail and success. X starts at 21 for each difficulty level (L). L[1-4] change attack (O-X) some, your frame window a lot (L[1]'s 13 frames are 2.6 times as lenient as L[4]'s 5 frames), and attack (O) a little. L[5] is unique, doubling leniency from 1 frame to 2 on the blue bar's return so on L[5] you should press A on return, except L[5]'s only gain on L[6] is that undershooting the 1st O-frame of the return by 3-4 frames, or the 2nd by 4-5, red zones. It's accidental and, if off that much, L[4] or lower is better. Otherwise, choose L[6-7]. L[5] is least justified. L[7] is frame perfect but its O-X surplus damage doubles L[6]'s O-X, with L[6] on a 2 frame window. Your red zone % at L should exceed (O[L-1]-X[L-1])/(O[L]-X[L])*100 (the purple dot left of yours, divided by yours, times 100). Repeat for each L except 5 until true. For example, at L[7], (O[L-1]-X[L-1])/(O[L]-X[L])*100 is (36-21)/(52-21)*100 or 48.4%. Predict your red zone %. If under 48.4, drop level then recalculate. Repeat for each L except 5 until over. The red zone % for mean target damage D is -(100*(X[L]-D)/(O[L]-X[L])). O[L]'s the blue dot, O[L]-X[L]'s the purple dot. For example, at L[6], -(100*(X[L]-D)/(O[L]-X[L])) is -(100*(21-30)/(36-21)) or 60%. Red zoning 60% at L[6] averages 30 damage. I chose L[6] between L[4] and L[6]. I didn't double-check calculations or battle, and damage is probably reduced in battle by formulas with parameters like monster defense. But it's a game about tomatoes, not a math symposium. I'm just contributing to the Game of the Month thread.

>>1010331 Cheers. So before senpai Nintendo noticed AlphaDream and put them on the map with Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Tomato Adventure was their second game, after the digital collectible card game Koto Battle. Tomato Adventure was originally developed for the GBC as Gimmick Land, and little was known about it except for 2 screenshots until the Gimmick Land prototype surfaced as part of the September 2020 lotcheck leaks. TomatoAdventure_Fan translated everything that provides essential context to beating Gimmick Land, though he left the rest alone. You must name yourself in English and not Japanese to avoid glitches, text gets cut halfway through some lines and drops down to display the rest, the translation's worse than GBA's, and the font's too big, but I patched it to a Gimmick Land prototype with the correct CRC32 of 228D0B0C. It's an alternative demake (premake?) that Tomato Adventure improved. Gimmick Land https://www.upload.ee/files/17068989/Gimmick_Land__English_.gbc.html
A screenshot of Gimmick Land I forgot to add.
Looks like something I really would have enjoyed when I was a kid. Shame my Gameboy got stolen at school. Never did finish that wario game....
(163.65 KB 1440x960 tomato adventure cave.png)

I finished the cave so far, and a quiz that rewarded paying attention. Enjoying how instead of random encounters I bump a bad guy bopping around to begin a battle, and the adjustable difficulty on Gimmicks (Tomato Adventure's name for attacks), which let me control the pace of fights. The awe system rewards execution in those fights while discouraging biting off more than you can chew. Fighting gets better as you get Gimmicks. DeMille runs fast so navigation is brisk, areas don't overstay their welcome, and each scene is colorful and fresh. Music and sound effects are cheery and match the mood. I have 4 Gimmicks and enjoy Alesa's Pop Horn the most. Game's got that Mario & Luigi spirit, I'll continue playing later when I find time.
>>1010582 >Never did finish that wario game.... Don't let the dream die, sail the seven seas.
>>1010309 Tomato Adventure, quirky RPG for the GBA from AlphaDream, the same people who brought you Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga! >>1010512 >So before senpai Nintendo noticed AlphaDream and put them on the map with Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Tomato Adventure was their second game >>1010604 >Game's got that Mario & Luigi spirit The question is, who's playing Brothership in 2 months? I plan to spin it up on Ryujinx, try a couple hours and see where it goes from there. Hope it returns to form and isn't more Paper Jam.
>>1010712 I'd plug my prong into Connie's socket. Do her people have ocular sex?
I need to get around to the Mario+Luigi RPGs sometime, I keep putting it off. Superstar Saga looks like the best journey starter.
>>1010655 I'm waiting for gameplay footage and poz'd translations but graphically I'm hooked
>>1010774 NoA put up a new trailer 4 days ago with graphical hooks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5IlOERYagU More gameplay footage can't be far off.

>>1010893 >"Greetings from Concordia!" in the Mario & Luigi Brothership trailer >4 days ago <Sony announced they're shutting down Concord 4 days ago Nintendo might be taking the piss. Their video team is aware of timing, they didn't stream in the UK the Direct that named Tears of the Kingdom after Queen Elizabeth died.
>>1010900 Their video team is retarded and don't need to be drawing bullshit from financial scams if the game ends up being shit.
>>1010318 Tried it on my toaster for an hour and it works fine. >>1010461 Yeah I mostly hit on level 6 and rarely hit on level 7.
>>1010712 Can someone explain what Mario's wearing and why Luigi's drawn as a robot? This reference is lost on me.
>>1011018 I'm going to be annoyed if you're baiting but livid if you genuinely don't know.

>>1011039 It's obviously a Fallout reference, duh.
>>1011018 He's a pasta maker duh
>>1011018 Its probably some flavour of the month type shit anime for niggercatle
>>1011018 Full Metal Alchemist
>>1011164 You ruined it

...video games?
>>1010461 So I made progress and besides RNG gimmicks like Erupter, Gear-Yo's the hardest gimmick for me so far. Don't spend upgrades on it, it's your starter move obsoleted later by better equipment and since you need to use all equipped gimmicks to activate the deactivated ones it cuts DPS to keep around. Alesa's RabiShoes work like Gear-Yo with a more forgiving stop window and a constant thus predictable velocity. AlphaDream's Tomato Adventure seems to their Mario and Luigi what Capcom's Darkwing Duck (NES) is to their classic Mega Man, like a hidden installment with different characters.
>>1012125 Thanks
I'll probably try this on my Everdrive once I clear the gaming backlog.
Sound familiar? Seems some unused audio tracks from M&LSS are actually from Tomato Adventure, like this, which rearranges the Tomato Adventure title screen.
>>1012125 Will trannies ever be gone from the modding and hacking scenes?
>>1013593 Data miners find many nice tracks that stay unused for some reason. Chrono Trigger had a cut section in Prehistory called Singing Mountain, and its nice track died with it, but stayed in data to be found later by data miners.
>>1013593 I made more progress and I'm in Tartar Valley. Mario and Luigi was probably made from Tomato Adventure, explaining the music. There are little nods to or from Mario and Luigi through the game. The big weird tree in the middle of >>1010318 is in a place called Starshade Valley, reminding me of the Starshade Bros. from Mario and Luigi. The colors resemble the place where you find the Starshade Bros., Stardust Fields. It's a better game than I thought it'd be.
>>1013696 >probably made from Tomato Adventure Probably >explaining the music Nah it's a rearrangement, not a remnant. They planned on reuse
>>1010309 Hey hey, gamers, I have a couple of announcements for the next GotM, which for ONCE is gonna be uploaded on schedule: 1) For the first time since these have started, the polls show two games with the same number of votes. Now, I propose two different ways we can deal with this situation, and leave it to you guys to decide on which one seems preferable: either we make the next thread a double whammy and feature both games, or the tiebreaker shall be the last digit of the post number of the OP, with odd numbers (1-3-5-7-9) deciding in favor of Barkley and even numbers (0-2-4-6-8) deciding in favor of Boktai. I swear to respect either outcome impartially. 2) I wanted to actually go ahead and add a bit of a theme to future GotM, but with a caveat. Each month I'll be choosing a set number of games that adhere to some sort of gimmick, letting you guys vote on which of the games best describes it and picking it as the GotM. However, as I can foresee anons not particularly enjoying some themes, I will still let all additional entries in the poll participate as equal (i.e., let's say the theme is "sports games" and people really just want to play some JRPG that gets the majority of the votes instead, I will simply neglect that month's gimmick in favor of the more popular title). Regardless, I'd really appreciate it if you could come up with games that fit the theme, just for fun.
>>1020429 Boktai since it isn't a meme game but really you should just pick.
>>1020429 Oh misread and thought you wanted a tiebreaker post, my bad. Still think you should just pick.
