Shuhei Yoshida to leave Sony Interactive Entertainment on January 15, 2025 Anonymous 11/27/2024 (Wed) 01:08:45 Id: f8d474 No. 1043903
“I’m leaving Sony Interactive Entertainment on January 15, 2025…,” Yoshida said in an Official PlayStation Podcast interview. “It’s like announcing the launch date of a new game, [something] I haven’t done for a long time [laughs].” He continued, “I’ve been with PlayStation from the beginning, and this is my 31st year with PlayStation. And when I hit 30 years, I was thinking, hmm, it may be about time for me to move on. You know, the company’s been doing great. I love [PlayStation 5], I love the games that are coming out on this platform. And we have new generations of management who I respect and admire. And I’m so excited for the future of PlayStation. So you know, PlayStation is in really good hands. I thought, okay, this is my time.” Yoshida joined Sony Interactive Entertainment, then Sony Computer Entertainment, when it was still just a department under PlayStation creator Ken Kutaragi. “Ken’s team was doing the development, and there was another team under Sony Music Entertainment Japan making games for Super Nintendo, and that was another small team preparing to make games for PlayStation,” Yoshida said. “So the two teams merged, Ken’s team under Sony and Sato-san’s team under Sony Music Entertainment Japan, to create Sony Computer Entertainment in November 1993. When the company was established as a joint venture, we held a party and everybody was in one room at the hotel [laughs]. I remember we had about 80 people total. We were very small.” Yoshida’s job was to talk to publishers and developers in Japan, making phone calls and visits in hopes that they would make games for PlayStation. Yoshida eventually became president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, today known as PlayStation Studios, before stepping down to lead Sony Interactive Entertainment’s indie games initiative. “When I was managing [PlayStation Studios] working with big studios, making AAA games was great,” Yoshida said. “However, when I went to events like E3 or Gamescom, I always went to the indie game area. And I found games that I liked, and oftentimes the developer was there showcasing it. So I’d take a photo with the developer, trying to help promote these games.” As for what the future holds, Yoshida said while he has no plans yet, he would like to stay in the industry, helping independent game developers. “I have a couple of events to visit. The Game Awards are in December. I have commitments to the Taipei Game Show in January and DICE Summit in February, because I’m on the board… so that I’ll continue to do. But other than that, I have no plan. I enjoy my free time… I would like to continue to help indie developers or indie publishers if they need me. So I’ll probably continue to help these creative, talented indie teams in the future.” Personally I think this is just more signs that PlayStation wants to shed itself of its Japanese roots and continue bleeding money. We've already seen how the brand keeps wanting to push AAA cinematic shit with how they shutdown Japan Studio and are just tripping down on bad decisions. Although this could also be a sign of a complete shift in terms of how PlayStation is handled as Sony President, COO and CFO Hiroki Totoki says that PlayStation are currently reforming their gaming business, although how they reform said business could go one of two ways either they could have more of a free market approach or they can once again double down. Still this is pretty big news and I hope Sony moves the PlayStation HQ out of California. and gains a more "free market" approach where ecchi developers can make games for the PlayStation platform again rather than relying on AAAA cinematic shit to dominate the industry. The brand has been dead to me for a while, so I'm unsure what to expect at this point. https://blog.playstation.com/2024/11/26/all-good-things-a-look-back-at-shuhei-yoshidas-31-years-with-playstation/ https://archive.ph/wip/qOuVJ
>>1043903 I respect that man as a fellow LID fan. Godspeed and God bless, Mr. Yoshida.
Seems like they're doubling down on the shit.
May Sony Playstation be nuked from orbit
Damn. This guy was literally one of the reasons PlayStation exists, and a large reason behind many PS1 and 2 games. He was a very important producer in the early days of PlayStation. Sad to see him go, but I'm not surprised. The guy is both quite old now and probably dissatisfied with the state of the company. He pushed for Ape Escape and Jak & Daxter; GaaS shit seems like the absolute anthesis of what this guy loves.

>>1043931 >>1043939 If the guy was actually genuine, then why did he stick around with the company and allow all this pozzing to occur for so long? Because "PlayStation" effectively died as a brand in 2018 when they began rolling out Nintendo style censorship requirements, not to mention almost no one from even as recent as the early PS3 era is still at the company.
>>1043949 >The only way to save the agency is for the good people to stay. That's how I see it.
>>1043932 >Expect the company to become even worse. There was that leaked data this very year, about how soyny (and crapcom, square-enix, bandai-namco and others) all had internal internal documents stating that they would double down on DIE and pozz. source?
>>1043903 >“It’s like announcing the launch date of a new game, [something] I haven’t done for a long time [laughs].” Because PS5 has no games to launch.
>>1043903 Interviews like these are always unintentionally humorous. I understand that there are things one is expected to say in interviews like these, and that it occurred during an official PlayStation podcast, so that limits Yoshida even more. But the interview reads as if he is living in some alternate universe. >You know, the company’s been doing great. It hasn't been doing great at all. >I love the games that are coming out on this platform. What games? >And I’m so excited for the future of PlayStation. Most would agree that the future for PlayStation is uncertain/getting worse, so what is he excited about exactly? >So you know, PlayStation is in really good hands. See above. >>1043949 >If the guy was actually genuine, then why did he stick around with the company and allow all this pozzing to occur for so long? I haven't read all of his tweets and interviews and whatnot, so he could have some personal motivation I don't know about. But the most likely answer is that he doesn't actually realize what he is supporting. Most far-left radical ideology comes from the West, mainly the United States, and like other pieces of culture, they come over to Japan gradually. In the case of PlayStation and Sony, it comes directly from the US branches of the company too, which have a strong influence over the entire company nowadays since their main office is in California. DEI, LGBT acceptance, Pride, etc. are all carefully presented to Japanese people like Yoshida under the guise of "kindness" and "tolerance", when of course it is nothing but destructive in reality. Yoshida probably thinks he is just being a "good person", and whether you are an office worker or a CEO, most humans are greatly concerned with being seen as "good" by everyone else. There is also that element of Japanese politeness. If he really knew what was motivating supporters of DEI, it wouldn't surprise me at all if he began to rethink what he has said. Of course this ignorance does not absolve him from responsibility, since as a leader and veteran he should be vigilant and suspicious about any threats. >they began rolling out Nintendo style censorship requirements Even if the final decision to apply censorship was signed off by him on some of these games, it is also likely that the decision was, in actuality, out of his hands. He could have faced pressure from other departments at PlayStation or Sony, especially the US branches. Refusing to comply could have risked the games being delayed, or he could have been labeled a variety of things, or even ousted from his position. This is all speculation, and even if it was true, again, he is still responsible for the products put out under his guidance.
