Walking Simulators Anonymous 04/16/2025 (Wed) 19:58:23 Id: 0c876d No. 1100872
What’s your favorite walking simulator?
So does that term actually mean anything specific that anyone on here can describe, or is it just a general catchall for games /v/ doesn't like and considers boring?
>>1100887 First person adventure games with minimal actual gameplay or interaction. You are gay for being upset at such a widely used and easily understandable term.
>>1101090 Ages ago it WAS a derogatory term, but it’s now a well-known term describing a genre of narrative-heavy, minimalist 1st person adventure games. My absolute favorite is Isle of Eras. Don’t look for spoilers / synopsis, just trust me and play (or watch) it.
Any Rareware game
Arma 3
>>1101181 Where is the "was" coming from. It still is a derogatory term because the genre is inherently bad. We don't want to walk around some fag's "carefully designed" level with "environmental story telling". We want to play games.
>>1101181 You can make a narrative heavy game with actual fucking gameplay in it. Using the one medium out there that gives the audience a ton of agency and utilizing none of that so you can instead have a voice wax exposition to you while you hold W and try not to die from boredom is complete bullshit.
>>1100872 dragon quest walk
>>1100872 >favorite walking simulator? arma 3, easily. i used to be in a realism / milsim unit and a good 80% of our time was spent humping across kilometers of terrain
>>1100872 Does Subnautica counts? I mean you backtrack a lot and build shit
>>1100872 >>1102035 that's swimming dum dum
>>1100872 I don't like the genre not because I am necessarily hateful towards the concept but I geniuently believe that every single walking simulator would be 10x better if it was an oldschool Puzzle Adventure game. You want us to focus on the story and environment then there is no better way of doing that than to give us some puzzles to solve that require us to pay attention and think. Every single walking simulator I play is just really lacking in this regard I think that they would geniuently be better if they had more puzzles The issue with Walking Simulators is that people who criticize them often fail to see the fact that we had a genre very similar but better in the form of Point n'Click games. The fact that Walking Simulators are popular at all proves that such games are still somewhat in demand, it's just that instead of any interesting puzzling we usually get just straightforward corridors or open fields with narration - which is really boring.
>>1102109 Play Gone Home. It feels like you’re going through a stranger’s house piecing together other people’s lives. It gives you a sense of voyeurism that isn’t replicated in any other genre. If you haven’t seen it, go play it without looking up anything about it, get into it and focus on searching through the house — you’ll get what I mean. Also I recommend playing it with headphones.
>>1102257 Have we really fallen so much that anons are unironically recommending Gone Home?
>>1102257 Shut up.
going outside
outer wilds. I still haven't played the dlc because I heard it was spooky and have avoided any detailed info on it in case I ever have the balls to play it.
I wouldnt mind playing a immersive one btw. Is Northern Journey good?
>>1100872 I treat Assassin's Creed like this. I disable the HUD and try to figure out my way through the cities on ground. There's a surprising amount of details you notice about the NPCs and the districts themselves when you do this with no HUD. There isn't just a different in building design and looking out for landmarks, the citizens in each district will wear different clothing and be annoying in their own way. For example, the poor districts have a lot of beggars and mentally ill, the merchant districts will have a lot of people carrying vases and crates, and the rich districts will have better dressed NPCs. You can figure out the bureau's location since it's always in the center of these districts and has a blue dome that more clearly stands out against the others in eagle vision.
I actually liked the original Dear Esther as a little audio visual experience when it came out. Never really bothered with any others except The Moon Silver since it was made by duskdev.
>>1102394 I went into Northern Journey blind and it isn't anything I was ever expecting. It's still very good, but also just bizarre. It does adventure really well by introducing just a little bit of terror into the experience. Lot of fun, but I think I burned out at the lake area.
>>1102499 Putting this one in my bucket list.
Yume Nikki
Morrowind
>>1102394 Its not really a walking sim. Its a treat but prepare for very rough edges. Try INFRA too. Those two are essential Eurocore vidya.
>>1104771 It is a walking sim. There's even less action in it than morrowind and that is a walking sim
>>1102352 The DLC is very good, and it only has a little bit of spookiness to it I say go for it
>>1105148 Is Outer Wilds a legit walking sim or is it a case of “close enough”?
>>1100872 I did like Firewatch
>>1106425 Wanted to post this but felt like I'd be called gay
>>1100872 Absolutely Death Stranding, greatly enjoyed the novelty of it
>>1106425 >>1106700 I really got into Firewatch but it did sort of chicken out in the end. Oh well maybe these kinds of games don’t have the budget to go long enough to properly develop their premise past a certain point. >>1106856 I never actually played Death Stranding and have been meaning to for ages.
>>1102257 >a fucking em dash Be genuine enough to write your own shitposts, don't ask AI to do it for you, you monster. >>1102352 I wouldn't count Outer Wilds as a walking simulator. It's just a puzzle/exploration game. Yes, what you do most can sort of count as walking, but there's threats, physics, an actually decent story and love poured in a game that was developed by smart people, not to mention the tons of puzzle and real problem solving that has to happen in the game. Walking Simulators have to be literally just walking, reading, and seeing cutscenes for things, it must be pretty much an interactive cutscene a-la half life 2 with pretty much no fail state at all, which is why Gone Homo is the key sample for that. You get into a house, open cupboards and drawers and read text. That's it. That's "the game".

>>1102447 this sounds like the sort of autistic levels of immersion I love. I do the same thing in RDR2
Still Wakes the Deep is pretty close to a walking simulator and it's pretty good.
The Stanley Parable. Kept me entertained for a lot longer than I expected.
>>1102447 The original Assassin's Creed was such a gem. It's really a shame how little care Ubisoft showed the series when it could've been their own flavor of Hitman to go along with Splinter Cell. There's so much they could've done to expand the way you planned assassinations like in 1 that would've made exploring the world worthwhile outside of finding bullshit collectibles.
>>1107436 >this gives zoomers nightmares
I really enjoyed exploring this weird house
>>1108643 IMO they really pushed the concept of “exploring a house” beyond the sanity point, like it was a dream sequence rather than looking through an actual home.
Conarium
Final Fantasy XIII also the best FF game ever made
>>1106856 >Death Stranding Came to say this.
Is Pokemon Go a walking simulator or emulator?
>>1107946 >made the nuhitman trilogy >currently makes the 007 game at this point give assassin's creed to lol imagine every mission being a different era without creating dozens of individual games instead save for a few off studio spinoffs

>>1100872 POOLS is fun. No Jump Scares, no annoying Monsters or Ghosts. Just Atmosphere and Walking. Also there is no TAA for Smearing which is great. 10$ Hypnagogia is a nice Walking Simulator where nothing much happens, but it is sort of about solving puzzles to get the Crystal for each world. It kind of relies on Nostalgia of PS1 Games and for those that like Japanese things as well. A really fun experience. To me these are the better Walking Simulators and define the genre as a whole.
>>1123523 Pools is the best liminal / Backrooms type game — which is strange considering that Pools definitely isn’t liminal in reality since it’s a straight linear set of maps. BUT the atmosphere is great which is what makes it useful as a walking simulator. Almost all Let’s Players refuse to play it properly and just run through everything, not explore nooks and crannies experiencing atmophering sounds etc. They almost never realize the sound amplification after sitting down — so they miss great parts like sitting and observing the statue praising the ceiling light for example. I really hope the creator makes another game.
>>1107208 I’ve been meaning to ask — can you actually play RDR2 like a walking sim? Is it like walking around randomly checking stuff out in AC?
I remember enjoying the vibes of the park but I don't remember anything about the game. How curious. And it was made by funcom, a developer who made the longest journey once upon a time.
Path of Titans I guess.
SOMA >>1114575 Was kind of the point of the story. The mother (or grandmother, don't recall exactly anymore) was kind of cray and made the place of living a dangerous place
