turn based rpgs Anonymous 04/18/2025 (Fri) 17:27:12 Id: a688b7 No. 1133900
what are some good turn based rpgs aside from pokemon, paper mario, fear and hunger and black souls. those are really the only ones i ever played but i enjoyed them a lot and am looking to expand my horizon. please recommend me your favorites!!! if it has like a dark fantasy/depressing vibes itd be even better
>>1133900 Mario & Luigi partners in time N.P.C. Dreams (black souls fan game)
>>1133900 Shin Megami Tensei from 3 onwards has some of the Best turn based combat. Etrian is in a similar boat.
>>1133900 Demons Roots
>>1133900 Bravely Default is pretty good, though it gets a bit repetitive/grindy towards the end. The combat mechanics are solid and it's fun to play around with different job compositions for your party Also gonna second >>1134192's mention of the Etrian Odyssey games; those are good shit, especially if you're more interested in gameplay than story
>>1133900 Try Octopath traveler 2.
Lisa the pointless infinity unfolds Lisa the pointless Ultimate modpack (in agony mode) Alternatively Lisa the Pointless ultimate modpack ultimate fix (makes its own thing with the combat system, heavily edited version of the ultimate modpack)
>>1133900 I feel like you should check out the Dragon Quest series eventually. They're essentially the JRPG from which all other JRPGs grew. However, it doesn't really have dark vibes. I haven't played any of them, but maybe the Wizardry series does. But I heard they're hardcore, so you should play them after you've played all the other games from this thread you decide to play.
>>1133900 Obscure gems: Shadows Hearts 1-3 (especially 2 and 3) Turn based combat with timing elements. Dark atmosphere with eccentric humor and surprisingly good characters and music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elHF9LmcqkM Xenosaga trilogy if you want something story heavy. Xenogears, too. Autism is a prerequisite, be warned. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mniJs3kLAzQ Mainstream: Shin Megami Tensei (Nocturne, IV, etc) Needs no introduction. Great if you love collecting monsters, mythology, and philosophical debates. https://youtu.be/ALQuw8H3gig?t=63
>>1133900 You got to play FFX at some point as a gamer.

Why won't they publish Expedition 33's demo? I want to know how well or not it runs on my PC.
Final Fantasy X doesn't really have dark vibes, but it does have excellent turn based combat and is a decent JRPG overall. Shin Megami Tensei, as other anons have mentioned, seems to fit your criteria, most of those games have quite a dark vibe. SMT is more focused on gameplay whereas Persona, the spin-off series, is more focused on story. I'd recommend SMT 3, 4 or Strange Journey, or Persona 3 of you want a darker game.
>>1133900 Romancing Saga 2.
>>1133900 As far as niggas-in-a-row combat goes, SaGa Emerald Beyond is pretty much peak. No dark fantasy vibe unfortunately. Might want to check out Wizardry for that or something. I wish that Daphne game wasnt a shitty gacha live-service, since that would be up your alley.
>>1145553 I'm playing Daphne right now. I would say now is a good time to start as the banners have improved rates for legendaries you can use your starting rolls for. The game also gives you a free legendary to choose so at minimum get Lanavaille to heal your units. If you never played EO I would recommend trying that first before this game. Just read up on how to avoid permadeath scenarios, why you need a thief, and you'll be fine even as a F2P.
>>1137859 >Xenogears The actual combat in Xenogears is dogshit though. The way you acquire skills is the most retarded mechanic ever conceived.
final fantasy tactics advance chrono trigger :^)
>>1133900 Kamidori Alchemy Meister. A common thing people complain about it is that you can't get it into true full screen. What you do to fix it is Ctrl alt delete, end program, and it should have a special popup window the next time you boot up the game after which you set the screen setting to "virtual". You're also going to need a Japanese locale emulator and run the game in Admin. The game is 100% worth it and easily the best turn based RPG I've ever played. Thank me later.
Battle Moon Wars is an underrated gem
>>1133900 Older: Phantasy Star IV (the best Genesis game) Final Fantasy I to X Chrono Trigger Legend of Legaia Dragon Quest series Newer: Baldur's Gate 3 Divinity: Original Sin 2 Yakuza 7 and 8 Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 South Park: The Stick of Truth Touhou The Genius of Sappheiros Labyrinth of Touhou 1 and 2 And one million RPGMaker games, like OFF, Towelket, LISA, Omori... There's too much stuff to recommend since the genre is as old as modern vidya.
>>1147093 Is BG3 actually worth it? How does it stack up to games like Neverwinter Nights and pathfinder wotr?
>>1147136 They have different design philosophies but in my opinion, as ROLE-PLAYING games both Pathfinders are way better than BG3, but the combat in BG3 is very superior and it lets you be very creative with how you approach most encounters. And obviously, BG3 has far better production values than WotR (full voice acting which is also good, most dialogues are animated, great visuals, etc) I personally prefer WotR (beat it 5 times) over BG3 (beat it once, went for another run but got bored) because of the replayability, choices and build autism but I loved both games in my first playthrough.

>>1133900 SaGa series, the Last Remnant.
(38.13 KB 640x640 bug bug.png)

If you like Paper Mario, Bug Fables is really great.

>>1133900 I’ve been playing Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls on Steam. It’s fairly easy for a Wizardry game, yet the lack of a tutorial or manual ironically makes it harder than the Wizardry 1 remake.
been playing cassete beasts and its legitimatley become my favorite rpg of all time.

>>1133900 Epic battle fantasy is by far my favorite turned based rpg series ever, also you can click on the main girl's tit's to make them giggle
