SaGa Thread Anonymous 04/19/2025 (Sat) 00:15:19 Id: dabdef No. 1139572
I'm kinda curious about the SaGa series. I've only played Frontier 2 (but got filtered by South Moundtop) but the remaster doesn't look worth the money. And I gotta admit, from the outside, the fanbase looks like victims of Stockholm Syndrome. What do you think are the ones actually worth playing?
>>1139572 For a starter I would recommend Frontier 1, RS2 (remake was pretty good) or RS3. The specific mechanics change depending on the entry but you'll get a general idea of what SaGa is about once you've played either two of these three. >What do you think are the ones actually worth playing? I played nearly all of them and I enjoyed each one although there's some entries like Minstrel Song and Unlimited that can be divisive and are better off saved for later.
>>1140227 Did a little research on my own, and the Romancing SaGa 2 remake actually looks really good. It's strange that I don't remember hearing anything about it even though it only came out a few months ago. I think I'll give that a shot. I remember hearing that Emerald Beyond was a dumpster fire. What's your take on it? The fact that it had a crossover with Vampire Survivors for some fucking reason at least has me curious what fans thought of it.
Overall I'd say they're all worth trying but for most people some games will click and some won't. Before the remake Romancing SaGa 2 was a great game and a good intro to the series; now it's even better. I agree with RS3 and Frontier 1 also being safe picks. And Final Fantasy Legend II is worth a mention, it's not what most people think of when asking about the SaGa series but it's a good game if you're looking for a simple gameboy JRPG. The more complex games like Unlimited SaGa and Emerald Beyond have some die-hard defenders but also many people that got filtered. Like me. They're not bad games, I think, I just don't get them. On the other hand I loved the equally divisive The Last Remnant (which is technically not a SaGa game but it's often grouped together)
>>1140463 I liked it and think it has a really good combat system for a turn based RPG but it's pretty much a continuation of the style of Scarlet Grace with a low budget 3d presentation and a focus on combat at the expense of things like cities and dungeons so it's easy to see why it's a divisive entry. Personally, I thought EB needed more polish but there's definitely some interesting ideas and it's the kind of game you can replay many times and still find some new stuff due to the way it's designed.
