Video Game Transformation Gimmicks, Alt Forms, & Variants. Anonymous 04/26/2024 (Fri) 00:17:50 Id: 34b5b3 No. 962390
Been wanting to make a thread about this for a while but I've been putting it off cause I thought there wasn't much to go on but fuck it, might as well try. I want to talk about mode changes for player characters, enemies, and other NPCs and how they affect the game in general. It doesn't have to be a combat-based form but even an NPC having an altered state with visual indications. So give me anything you've got about the subject, the only games I can call at the top of my head that I've played about this subject recently are Devil May Cry 3 and Megaman ZX as part of the zero collection. Minor note: Might as well count super modes like Superstar Invincibility from Super Mario Bros. just in case.
Ape Escape 3 replaces a lot of useless-unless-hard-requirement gadgets from 2 with a bunch of transformation you can select quickly that each have multiple special abilities which are broadly useful. A great part of an already great game. Breath of Fire's main gimmick is that the protagonist can transform into a dragon. It's OK in 1 but suffers from elemental weaknesses being an afterthought so 2/3rds of forms are near pointless and most random encounters don't justify the time spent transforming. It's essentially non-existent and just a damage all spell that uses all MP in 2 (2 is still a solid game), but in 3 there's a very detailed system where you combine various genes to make unique forms on the fly. It unfortunately takes far too long to get going, you don't really have access to it for the first ten hours, but its great once you have it. Outside of the dragon system, 1 has a party member who fuses with other party members into a single character. The problem there is that the fusion is so much better than any of the component party members, who are all the ones that are pointless once their story has completed. 2 has a Shaman system where you can fuse elemental shamans to most party members for bonuses, and certain highly compatible combos change a party member into a "new" one with their own abilities. Great system killed by the fact that you barely have access to it until almost the end of the game (and one is permanently missable unless you have a guide because it involves doing something you have no reason to do in a limited time frame) and party member balance is so horrible in this game you don't bother with most of them (The "Maeson" balance patch helps with the party balance without feeling romhacky, but it doesn't help how late most shamans come). 3 has a lycanthorp party member, but again it's a case of too slow in normal battles, cost so non-existtant it doesn't mater for boss battles. I suppose Final Fantasy VI gets a mention for Terra's transformation ability she has in the second half of the game. Again, falls into being too slow and resource intense (she has a hidden counter that fills with every enemy killed and depletes with every round transformed) for normal battles, but the cost is not remotely of note for boss battles. On the upside, its one of the few personal abilities that isn't either near useless in the second half of the game and not just a unique spell.
-Power Stone 1/2 Transformation is a timed powerup where you pretty much rape everyone who didn't collect the Emeralds Power Stones >Prototype fuck 2 There's several transformations depending on what you need or want to approach an objective, but the one with the biggest visual indicator is the armor, which boosts your defense, restricts your movement and is pretty much fucking useless considering high threat enemies will rape you if you're not dodging them. >Crimsonheads I don't think I need to explain this one but if you never played Resident Evil Remake. It's Zombies, but they get up, statt running and fuck your shit up. >Jak2/3 Jak turns into an eddgelord because this was the early 2000s and NuMetal was really popular. Has powerful melee attacks including an AoE ground stomp. Gets more powers in Jak 3 but I can't remember which, I'm waiting on the reverse engineered PC ports to come out so I can replay all 3 games again, I had tons of fun with them and it disgusts me what happened with Naughty Dog post the PS2 days. >Pickle Rick Funniest shit I've ever seen

Literally my favorite gymmick in any videogame ever. I prefer multiform characters though rather than one "super" form, but "devil trigger" power up forms are cool too. I particularly like ZX Advent where you pause the game mid combat and eventually reach the point where you have a massive wheel of forms at your disposal. Though I don't like how you outright turn into the characters you steal forms from instead of getting a new set of armor like in the original ZX, I like the idea of new armor more than just outright shapeshifting, though the ability to turn into more stereotypical boss characters is cool.
I like the goddess form transformations in the Neptunia franchise. In terms of gameplay its a pretty massive powerup and they have different movesets.
Warriors Orochi 4 had a mechanic called Deification for plot important characters like Lu Bu, Nobunaga Oda, Zhao Yun, Yukmura Sanada, etc. The idea being that the Norse and Greek gods, in reviving the previous crossover world created by the Chinese and Japanese mythological figures, put their power in the form of bracelets to keep the crossover world from collapsing in on itself a second time Only 8 characters out of about 150 got fancy forms and new movesets. Tyr - The Asgardian god of war, this bracelet was used by Yukimura Sanada, renowned for his skills in battle. Freyja - The Asgardian goddess of Love, this bracelet was used by Guan Yinping, who has a deep bond with her family. Thor - The Asgardian god of Thunder, this bracelet was used by Lu Bu, whose strength and skills are unmatched by others. Apollo - The Olympian god of light and sun and protector from evil, this bracelet was used by Zhao Yun, who protected both leaders of Shu. Poseidon - The Olympian god of the Seas, this bracelet was used by Cao Pi, renowned for his calm and calculating presence. Aphrodite - The goddess of beauty of Olympus, this bracelet was used by Naotara Ii, head of the Ii family and loyal vassal of Ieyasu Tokugawa. Hermes - The god of trickery and wisdom and messenger of the Olympian gods, this bracelet was used by Mitsunari Ishida, retainer of Hideyoshi Toyotomi renowned for his resourcefulness. Izanagi - This bracelet, cursed with death, was worn by Nobunaga Oda, the Demon King, one of Japan's Three Unifiers, who uses it to gain power. You might like the concept OP, I felt like it excluded a lot of characters.
>>963303 Sounds promising and the trailer's really nice, reminds me a bit of Dynasty Warriors, strikeforce. Does it have a PC release?
(365.79 KB 601x883 Fierce Deity.png)

I love this one.
>>963317 Yes, this game and the previous game in the series Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate, came out on PC. WO3U even has the Strikeforce outfits for the Dynasty cast, and created new ones in that style for new characters not in the original Strikeforce games.
>>963337 Would you recommend Warrior's Orochi 3 Ultimate over 4? I hear the latter has no post game and the plot isn't really much of a concern for me here.
>>963344 WO3U is more beloved than WO4U. Although everyone is based on their DW7 and SW3 versions respectively, it does have way, way more content and personality compared to WO4U, which only has the strengths of being based on DW8 and SW4, looking nicer overall, and more gameplay systems like magic items and switch combos to tweak and look stylish doing.
>>963347 Oh, and probably the most important bit for you, sorry for forgetting. WO3U does not have deification transformations, just WO4U.
>>962390 power forms are fucking awesome.

>>963192 Megaman overall has nice transformations. Megaman Starforce (OP) has a lot of them.
>>963594 If you haven't already, check out the Star Force DX mod >brings the content into a single game that can be completed fully singleplayer. >restores content cut in English translation >adds a way to get once peripheral exclusive content in game >backports all the improvements from sequels >hardmode that isn't romhack bullshit and made by someone who really knows the game >a few new post-game fights >option to replay a minigame that was originally one time only >save speed improved and multiple save slots (apparently Capcom was retarded and wrote 3 redundant saves to protect against corruption instead of cycling them) >the part relevant to this thread: completing game with hardmode enabled the entire time gives you a bonus cosmetic transformation >loads more
>>963606 Anything like this for the variant Battle Networks?
>>963934 There's mods that restore the Solar Boy Django content for BN 4, 5 and 6.
>>963606 Bump. Thanks for the suggestion, I just downloaded the game and finished beating Flame Taurus. This game's a lot more fun than I expected. Can't wait for more things like satellite admins and other things to expect. Is there a DX version for the other Starforce games?
>>963934 There's a mod for 4.5 that changes the battle system to the one used in the main series. It works great, but it's still hamstrung by 4's crappy chip library. There's another mod that removes the RNG from Battle Chip Challenge. It makes it kinda playable. >>964043 Not really. The same author did a mod for 2, fixing some of its most egregious mechanical flaws (the insane encounter rate) and makes the game 100% completable single player, but its deliberately not nearly as extensive. 2 isn't well received at all. Most of DX's improvements are backports from 3 (which is well liked), but I don't know of any mods to remove the need for MP to 100% complete everything.
Bump.
>>963606 Yeah I already tried. I must have replayed MMSF1 over 10 times by now. >>964043 Nice; Get his card by fighting his EX form. It's on the waveroad just above Luna's house. Try to get each boss card after defeating them by finding their EX form.
>>971272 Already got it along with Cygnus Wing on my first attempt as well.
>>971266 Revolting. Somebody was very hard when making this and that's the only reason you're posting it.
I know I'll get shit for the examples, but I'm a sucker for space games with this very mechanic. Eve's tech 3 destroyers change form based on maxing a single stat. https://yewtu.be/watch?v=ndln1phJplQ And, of course, Star Citizen... https://yewtu.be/watch?v=Q60YjQ3ZTo4&t=8
>>971356 Geez, you're really into this kind of thing huh? Well it doesn't violate SFW standards and is on topic so have some more.
>>971272 Managed to beat Harp Note and the Pegasus Sattelite admin, when's the transformation sequence gonna take place and how can I change them when I get them? I just figured out how to get satellite admin emails with the passwords sent to you as well.
Bump.
>>976372 Not that much longer, but SF1 did wait a long time before giving you Star Force access.
>>984548 Managed to get it a while ago funny enough. So far it's pretty damn fast and has an auto-lock built into it. It's great for sword builds that's for sure. Can't wait to get the other three forms. I'm currently at the part where I'm hanging out with Sonya and likely it's gonna be where she becomes Queen Ophica.
>>963594 I have always wanted to have Star Force be Battle Network X, with the Reploids in the X series being the enemy EM Waves. Dasypodidus Major fuses with Netopian Michael Irons to become Armored Armadillo, who wreaks havoc on a neighborhood.
>>963606 I would prefer a variant of this for Battle Network 6.

>When the final boss' final form is no longer "defeat" but "survive" Any more games with this trope?
>>984615 Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is the only game I know of that does this but the Dothack Quadriolgy games do the inverse before you data drain them after dealing enough hits and surviving them.
>>984555 The only ones that could be applied to BN6 are the restored content cut from English release, and removal of the MP locks, which the fan translation of EXE6 already does (use the virtual console version of the patch).
Kamen Rider Memory of Heroes has this as its whole gymmick
(66.06 KB 400x550 s-l1600 (1).jpg)

>>984551 In SF1 you can get only a single form depending on which version of the game you're playing. My favorite is Pegasus. The card will appear during combat... But you probably figured that out on your own by now. In SF2 and SF3 you can have more at the same time.

>>985141 The mod in question does let you grab the other forms, but its a post-game thing without multiplayer.
