It's still surreal to me how the real world and the internet world later became one, mostly from smartphones boom and after. Serial Experiments Lain was right all along.
Speaking for smartphones, many people lately shill the "alternative" social media app BlueSky as the new "twitter killer"...and yet none of them mention that BlueSky, just like Telegram, requires from users to verify their account via phone number.
>>455818 There's plenty of other federated instances to choose from with not-shitty registration
>>455817 Smartphones are a piece of it, but the bigger cause was corporations figuring out how to profit from online activity. When I was first online, the whole thing was "don't talk to strangers online. Never give out your real name or other personal information. Use online handles instead." Then it completely flipped, almost overnight, once business realized they could mine your data.

>>455826 Corporation were always trying to profit from internet. Still they didn't resorted to internet centralization, heavy censorship etc until early 2010s. Also corporation resort way too much to spambots. Sure, they always used them but shit gets worse and worse with the passing of years.
truly the internet should not have progressed past 2010 that was the peak of happiness
