PlayStation 2 Thread - 25th Anniversary Edition Anonymous 03/03/2025 (Mon) 00:32:20 Id: 50ba19 No. 1076012
Accounting for time zones, the PS2 turns 25 tomorrow. Lets have a thread about the PS2 and its games >favorite game >favorite game that's not on everyone's favorite PS2 games list (hidden germs) >favorite genre that was on PS2 that's not made anymore >favorite characters
Reminder that Inafune looked at Silver Age Capcom and said "We have to change or the company is gonna die" and then made it much worse.
>>1076014 Microsoft pushed for it
>>1076022 I thought it was because Inafune was obsessed with Gears of War and Halo
Favorite game for the playstation 2 is definitely klonoa 2. Mainly the feels but the fun platforming is good. >favorite characters Only barely getting into the world of Playstation 2 games. So I dont really have any at the moment. Kind of don't like this Haseo guy from .hack // g.u but somehow I'm a sucker for asshole characters
>>1076023 He was, but Microsoft heavily sabotaged it's competition as well. Not only did they invest on companies like Activision and Bethesda directly (which is why they had such close ties and got bought out eventually) but stopped investing in Japan and paid journos out the ass to shit all over Nip games (outside of Capcom of course).

Every year this image hurts worse. I semi-recently played through the first ratchet and clank trilogy, its amazing in hindsight how much the gameplay improved in each iteration. >R&C The first game basically plays just like spyro with gun slapped on as an afterthought. Melee is just easier until the very last level where theres some annoying mobs with burst fire in corridors. >Going Commando Significant improvement in all aspects, much better gunplay with smoother aiming, weapons upgrades are now available for everything if you use them enough, coming in at the start of the 'edgy' era so the jokes are a bit spicier than the last game, but still not very notable. much more open in regards to farming bolts as well as arena challenges to mix up what your doing from time to time. >Up Your Arsenal Just as big of a step forward as the last game, higher render distances, bigger levels, more weapons with great variety. Amazingly, at no point playing this did it feel clunky or dated, it really seems to be the time that games locked down third person controls, because its very smooth with transitioning from shooting to platforming and vise versa. All weapons now can be upgraded into an entirely different evolved form, instead of just getting a stat boost. This game, unlike the last two actually has some pretty decent humor as well. Or, it has at least aged better. Also, graphically doesn't even look half bad, despite being 20 years old.

>>1076367 >The PS2 came out in 2000, 10 years after the SNES. It's been 25 years since then... i know anon, i know... whats even worse is that every generation after it has been just blurring together more and more until they is no real progress being made. I bought a PS4 opening weekend and only own 3 fucking games for it ( Bloodborne, KZ shadowfall, Ground zeroes). I don't even know if the PS5 has exclusives at this point. Hell, i don't even think games look better than they did 10 years ago. Even worse, isn't this current console gen coming to a close? Is there even a meaningful jump in tech happening?
>>1076374 >I don't even know if the PS5 has exclusives at this point. Well it has a worse version of Demon's Souls.
(354.81 KB 1800x1800 Secretary bird.jpg)

This is mildly related, but what would you all put in your "S-tier" of consoles? Handhelds included. For me, the SNES/SFC and PlayStation are the only guaranteed spots, but recently I've thought about including PS2 into that grade as well. There's a lot of systems I haven't played enough like the Genesis/Mega Drive, Master System, DS and 3DS , PC-Engine/TurboGrafix, for me to make any kind of definitive list.
>>1076378 >SNES/SFC and PlayStation I would agree with that and add the NES too. It may seem very limited today, even compared to the SNES, but the shear amount of games present on it and it being the origin console of so many series' and containing their earliest releases in those series' means that it shouldn't be ignored. The technical limitations aren't enough to drop it down a tier. >There's a lot of systems I haven't played enough like the Genesis/Mega Drive, Master System, DS and 3DS , PC-Engine/TurboGrafix, for me to make any kind of definitive list. Same. Just on recollection of it's presence I would say the Genesis would also have to be an S or a high A at the least. Trying to make a console tier list is going to get into a lot of autism before you even get started with it. Like should it be judged "holistically"? On a technical basis? Game library? Personal experience? Potential (even if it was unrealized potential)? It would probably be easier and more honest and useful to make a list using those "web" type Japanese power ranking charts instead of a tier list.
>>1076378 Its exactly as you said. The SNES, PSX, and PS2 are the only three consoles that have a shot for the spot of 'all time best' console. There are plenty of solid consoles, obviously. The genesis, N64, and gamecube are all solid, but doing some basic numbers you can see that the Playstation had more 'good' games than the N64 had games at all. (around 4000 for PS, vs 388 for N64). I didn't have a genesis growing up, but i did have an SNES. before 'retro' prices went turbo fucked i bought a genesis and even a got a sega 32x. The list of actually good games for it is kinda pitiful. Phantasy star 2-4, Streets of rage, and a couple of others are pretty much all that were memorable (i thought sonic 2 was kinda mid honestly), compared to all the classics on the SNES its just pitiful honestly. Though, streets of rage is absolutely great, don't get me wrong. Gamecube is a similar story, it had very few great games, and most of those were first party. The few i can think of that weren't directly made by nintendo are Chibi Robo and FromSofts Lost Kingdoms games. Its no surprise it got clobbered by the PS2 and almost put nintendo into bankruptcy if the Wii's success didn't save them. I don't think anyone here would disagree that 7th gen and on aren't even in the running, so ill ignore them.
>>1076374 Anon, home consoles are dead... Only the dumbest most retarded niggers get modern home consoles because they can't get or work with a PC.
>>1076378 >SNES >PS1 >Gameboy Advance >PS2 I hold a soft spot for the Gameboy, N64, Mega Drive, Dreamcast and the original Xbox. But those are the cream of the crop
>>1076384 I wonder how many people still have up to date PCs though? Tablets are taking over.
>>1076387 >Tablets are taking over What? They're like 3% of the market share
>>1076389 >access vs own That reminds me of something I was think about earlier. When I was younger a lot of kids would bring games to school to secretly install on the school's (obviously not optimized for gaming) computers. I'm talking the 90s here. PCs being what they were then and PC gaming and gaming in general really there was no difficulty in getting pretty much what ever you bought to run. I'm sure too lots of kids had access to their parent's home computers, which would have been mostly set up as business machines, and did the same thing. I don't think that would really work out today. If someone only had acces to a single household PC/laptop not made with gaming in mind It would probably just be easier to run what they wanted from a console. Not only because it would be (comparatively) more optimized from the family's work/school/home web appliance but also because they'll have more control over it and not get preempted by mom/dad doing work/turbo tax or sibling doing english homework. That graphic is a little less than clear about this point since it separates PC and laptops into two different categories while they are in most ways functionally and "spiritually" in the same niche. The main difference, as far as my point goes, being that laptops are much less upgradeable than PC. Which might even strengthen my point. If you're the gamer and computer kid in the family you might be eventually able to convince you parents to allow you buy and add gamer centric upgrades to the house's general purpose PC. But if that PC's a laptop you're way more stuck with what you've got. Maybe VERY stuck considering some of the laptops I've seen at Walmart. Just a consideration of one of the reasons why console gaming is still very much a thing despite how UNBELIEVABLY SHITTY the whole thing has devolved into.
>>1076394 I know the system requirements on modern games are jokes but if you want to play games then you find a way to play games. Not in the best way possible. But you find a way to play them. If it's games access you want to worry about then worry about how there's always some millennial responsible for feeding zoomers their latest marketeering brain slop and how nobody goes looking in the museum to see the relics particularly, they just play fortnite and things. Which is not specific to the zoomers and neither is this to be fair; having performative opinions as a way of socially flexing. So the best fallout was new vegas, the best console ps2, the best tony hawk was underground 2 etc etc. All it signals to me is that they never played Fallout 1
ps1 was better

I grabbed a second-hand PS2 way late to mainly play Megaten games like SMT: Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga duology. It is well worth it considering modern Atlus fucked up the HD remaster and they will do the same with DDS and the rumoured remastered Raidou games. Picked up some additional games like Okami and GTA: SA as well.
>>1076398 I certainly have fond memories of it.
I'm been playing Phantasy Star Universe and it's expansion, Ambitions of the Illuminus. I'm almost to the halfway point in the expansion, nice gameplay, but god, these characters are ass. Also playing through Metal Saga, still at the start of the game but it plays very nice. Will probably start playing dark cloud after it.
(21.26 KB 360x339 Steve2.jpg)

>>1076411 If you like Dark Cloud, I recommend its sequel Dark Chronicle and that game's spiritual successor, Rogue Galaxy. Rogue Galaxy is the best of the "trilogy". It's kind of obscure today, it was actually somewhat of a flop which surprised both Sony and Level-5 as the game is excellent and their previous releases did well.
>>1076378 I was thinking of getting a dreamcast since I found out you can burn discs easily and I have stacks of blanks I got for $3, and also a ds lite since it's $50 on ebay. For me the snes has to be on the list just because it's timeless. I haven't checked but someone said 70% of the n64 game catalog has multiplayer, which probably is merit enough to make the list. Haven't played ps1 or 2 much at all, either on console or on emulator, but the second probably makes the list. I don't think any handheld could begin to make the list unless it's a clamshell, haven't played 3/ds much but the gba sp does play gameboy games as well as gba titles and probably makes the cut. Streetpass is a pretty cool idea for the 3ds though. It also might be elitism, but I don't think you can form an opinion of a console by just emulating the games. Even buying the console and tossing an ebay'd disc or cartridge in nowadays feels like you're just playing the game rather than experiencing the frontier of home computing and seeing what's next every month.
PS2 is now 25 years old! Happy anniversary!

>>1076378 S-tier consoles would be PS1, PS2, PSP and Nintendo Switch for me. Namely for the sheer amount of various third-parties.
>>1076378 The PS Vita and the DS lite are the only ones I'd for sure put in there. A lot of consoles are high tier but S-tier is something special.
>>1076378 Vita for everything, PS2 for library. A solid argument could be made that few genres and a ton of series peaked on the PS2. PSP, DS, and the Dreamcast are pretty cool too.
>>1076363 Speaking of Green Reimu: Not-Green Reimu actually has an official appearance in a PS2 game because ZUN had a day job in the video game industry back then.
>>1076434 If I were try to make a console tier list, it would be based largely on library. I'll try. Within a particular tier, I'll list them by release date, because sorting them more particularly is hard. <S >NES, SNES, PS1, PS2 Greatest of all time, certainly of their respective generations. <A >Genesis, N64, Gamecube Not the best of their generations, but still really awesome and have tons of great games. <B >PS3, Switch Pretty good at the end of the day. Best of their generations, but their generations sucked. <C >Dreamcast, Xbox Best versions of multiplatform games during their generations. Yes, people say that technically Dreamcast is the same gen as Xbox, but that's bullshit. It's closer to being the same generation as Saturn. Also, they have some great exclusives (or at least exclusives at the time), though less than the really great consoles. <D >TG-16, Saturn, Wii Some awesome if niche libraries. But there are some things here I gotta admit are must plays. And yes, I know Wii sold absurd numbers, but I think a lot of people here ignore it as the wagglan casual console. And they're largely right to do that. But there are a few excellent exclusives that either use the wagglan well, or are just great regardless. But in the end, I'd say the number of great games is about the same as TG-16 or Saturn. <F >everything I didn't list except for handhelds and pre-NES consoles Handhelds are kind of hard. They kind of belong in their own list. Vita 4 life, though, baby. Gravity Rush alone makes it awesome. Pre-NES is kind of a whole different thing. I don't feel right saying the Atari sucked, but I also don't feel like there are any Atari games I get into as much as NES and later. I'll get super into Zelda I and II, as much as any modern game. Can't say the same for Adventure or Pitfall or Raiders of the Lost Ark. And I've barely ever played Colecovision or Intellivision, and from what I've seen of their games, I can't judge if they're better or worse than Atari. I assume Atari is better just due to a much larger library since it lasted much longer and must therefore have more games worth playing.

>>1076765 *Boku no Natsuyasumi 2 And the English patch only applies to the PS2 version iirc, which doesn't have the extra content (characters and events) that later appeared on the PSP port. There is a good chunk of Japanese PS2 games that were later ported on PSP (Vita only had Amagami and EDF2 as far as I remember), often filled with new stuff and QoL features.

>>1077274 Shame we never got a TL for the PSP version of 2 either, it adds a bunch of cool stuff and also through emulation you can have it run without any slowdown and without any technical issues (unlike PS2 which will have boats start doing drifts once you crank the OC high enough to get stable framerates)

>>1076374 >meaningful jump in tech If we're gonna be exact technology has continued to progress from a purely technological standpoint, but regressed with no survivors from a cultural one. It's bizarre to think we live in a time where Star Trek-tier voice recognition and AI capable of holding actual conversation exists, but the only "progress" video games see is in the form of janky mods and hyper-autistic emulators trying to emulate and occasionally improve upon 20+ year old games. >>1076378 Excellent bait friend. >Burgundian system <Game.com >SS <Dreamcast, Saturn, Vita, PSX >S <PS2, SFC, MD, PSP >A <PC Engine, FC, GBA, DS >B <Gamecube, Xbox, PC Engine Super CD-ROM >C <3DS, Wii, Switch, PS3 >D <N64, 360, Mega CD >F <PS4/5, Xbone+ >lol <N-Gage, Pippin, Amiga CD32, Jaguar (CD), 3DO, CD-i, Atari 5200 >not even trying <Stadia, Ouya >wuld have saved gayman if not for da joos <Amico >It was a different time <Atari 2600, Vectrex, Intellivision, Odyssey (2), Colecovision, Channel F >real gayman has never been tried <Anything by VTech

I had an SP back in the day, I remember owning it and playing it, but I cannot recall a single game I cared for aside from LeafGreen. >I found out you can burn discs easily You can, but on some games that requires compression (typically audio) since the GD is 1 GB as opposed to the ~700 MB CD, and I've heard it wears out the laser like crazy, since it has to read the compressed CD differently than the GD. At this point though, hardware is going to start failing anyway, so just be prepared to get a replacement or GDEMU at some point. >>1076708 >Dreamcast >C oh fuck right off with that. A home console doing arcade-perfect at home for the first time was amazing, and the library captured that "arcade-fun" feeling throughout. I feel as though the Dreamcast was one of - if not the - last consoles to really feel like it had an identity.
