Fuck game localization and translation companies Anonymous 02/21/2025 (Fri) 05:37:24 Id: 674967 No. 110
The latest victim of shitty game translations is The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy. A turn-based tower defense game by the creators of Dang It, Ron Paul!, There Is No Escape, and Master Detective. And the best part is that the game isn't even out yet, it releases on April 23.
Its NISA, were you really expecting any less? They're the worst of the worst, besides arguably Working Designs (but at least Working Designs games didn't also have rampant technical issues too)

Might as well post this here now since this is the thread for it. So it turns out that translators have been raping our asshole for the past century, but we didn't know or care about it until they came for our big titted anime lolis. I picked up a book several months ago entitled Appreciations Of Japanese Culture by Donald Keene. The book was published in 1971, with my copy being a reprinting of it from a decade later. Anyways, the last three chapters of the book is Keene laying out the exact same arguments we hear localizers make every fucking time for why they should be allowed to butcher Japanese translations, such as: <Altering the entire meaning of sections because "Westerners are 'too stupid' or 'too ignorant' to understand" <Outright removing large portions of the work because it "doesn't matter" or "destroys the story's flow" <It's the translators job to "fix" a work and "improve" it Pics are first of those three chapters. I was originally going to attempt to post the entire thing in text, but figured it was much more expedient to just take photos of the entire chapter and crop the images.

>>112 Also, do not mistake this as just the opinion and word "one guy". In fact Keene expressed that he sees himself as carrying on the work of Arthur Waley, a person he spends the next chapter expressing his utmost adoration for. For those who don't know, Waley made the first English translations of many Japanese and Chinese texts like The Tale of Genji and Journey to the West, and basically established how the Western public understands Japanese and Chinese culture to this day. And the way Waley did this was by adhering to the same practices many localizers are follow, by cutting out entire portions of the story or changing story elements to suite Western tastes. Another Anon found a PDF of the entire book, so it's the last attached file if you want to read the entire thing.
>>110 Which game got so censored to the point of becoming the industry's most absurd case? Fire Emblem has to be a top tier case of mutilated franchises by both japanese and americans.

>>194 >Which game got so censored to the point of becoming the industry's most absurd case? Depends on what you're asking for. Phoenix Wright is a case of "absurd" localization where, as the series progresses, they translators have to grapple with the fact the games obviously take place in Japan, but they essentially "wrote" themselves into a corner by trying to "localize" the entire series as taking place in LA. With pic related being one of the amusing memes results from this. Then there's also the case of NISA, where they either remove entire portions of games (At best) or brick your console if you dare to play it (At worst). Working Design is another infamous case for being incredibly terrible with their translations, which they only got away with for years because they lied about how the games they translated all "failed" in Japan.
