Animated PNG thread - Rebuilt Geocities Edition Anonymous 10/24/2024 (Thu) 17:12:31 Id: 0ca8c8 No. 1031284
Suggested from >>1031266 in the sexy sprite thread The idea is very simple: You take your GIFs & convert them to APNG. Why would you want to do this? Let me explain >APNG is usually smaller in file size vs. GIF while still maintaining the same quality >thus, APNG images in posts endlessly loop without having to click on them due to the smaller filesizes. <GIF animations not so much even with the fewer frames of animation Based on my testings, here is what I have determined to get working APNG animations on the posts in this site >must not exceed above 25.00 KB in file size >must not exceed above above 220px x 220px in image size Use this website to convert your GIFs to APNGs: https://ezgif.com/gif-to-apng Then repost them if they meet the above criteria.

Think I know why there was trouble with the Mario GIF, there's nearly 900 frames despite the colors being simple. If you can get the same effect but reduce the number of frames it should convert better. 2nd pic in this post has 30 frames but it had to be really shrunk down to stay under 25kb
(192.82 KB 148x128 ezgif-mario-resized.gif)

https://ezgif.com/resize using Gifsicle, not ImageMagick, resized by nearest neighbor so combine https://ezgif.com/resize with https://ezgif.com/gif-to-apng if resizing a GIF. >>1031301 Many made that claim, not one guy. The OP of that Minecraft thread was the one guy switching IPs and projecting a narrative it was one guy. Some shared evidence it badly behaved, like the guy who proved it detected if it was being run in a VM or virustotal. The evidence got deleted then the OP said there's no evidence. Not going near this topic again, I don't want to get banned.

Also if you want to test your APNGs out before posting them in this thread, use of the threads in >>>/test/

>>1031314 I use InfarView, it works there at least.
Here's a neat comparison between the APNG & GIF animation of Netscape, both of them resized to stay under 25KB This is the biggest working APNG in terms of file size and at 38 frames which dwarf both the korean fried chicken & spinning big think As you can see, the GIF has to be clicked on to be animated. The APNG meanwhile just keeps chugging along with no problems

No way I go under 25 KB if under 25 animates. >>1031308 means framerate would be 7, not 60. GIF >>1031309 is 192.82 KB and APNG >>1031311 is 196.32 KB, around the same size, so APNG size benefits depend on the GIF but APNG animating under 25 KB without having to click on it justifies file conversion.

(12.24 KB 128x108 kirby spinning apng.png)

It's already been mentioned in the sprite thread from OP but the APNG animations will keep playing even in the thread catalog. Any CSS theme made could change the size of the catalog thumbnails, but most of them do not modify the values for consistency reasons & is best if they remain that way. So while 220px x 220px & 25kb are the maximum sizes for a single file in a post before it needs to be clicked on, the catalog thumbnails don't go above 128px x 128px. If you plan to make threads using an APNG for the catalog thumbnail or want to reduce space so that you can squeeze the detailed frames in, follow the bolded text above as a guideline for great quality. Otherwise you can ignore it & stick with the previously mentioned sizes for posts. Imagine if you will, someone makes a Kirby thread and used pic related.
Oldfags will remember 8chan used to have animated gif thumbnails, too.

PSY anon here from the WebM thread, this is a GREAT thread. Unfortunately unless I learn more about the format and how to properly crunch down the bytes I don't see myself using the format often. I tried to convert a Super Mahjong animation of 11 frames and it took reducing the color palette to 16 colors to fit within these confines. 25kb and 220x220 PX is too restrictive, I would give anything for the CSS to be modified to expand these limits. I haven't gotten the chance to use proper compression like OxiPNG but 25kb, as much as compression has advanced, does not offer a lot of space. Also, Acid and Codexx, animated AVIF and JXL support would be great.
i want to impregnate Mai Shiranui. Multiple times.
>>1031374 >I would give anything for the CSS to be modified to expand these limits. I don't think it's CSS that's causes the compression of a file above 25kb and/or 220x220 PX, it seems more like the code the site runs on. That pic still came out very nice though! That's the kind of thing you would see on Geocities. There was the Geocities GIF archive provided by archive.org but they're still down, so it remains inaccessible. https://gifcities.org

Decided to change my workflow. Apparently my first test for some reason is very hard for APNG to compress. These five pieces fared much better due to being more simplistic. Still experimenting.
Is there a way to do this natively on my computer? I'm moving away from ansolutely everything being an online service.
>>1031407 Sure. https://ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-formats.html#toc-Options-11 https://github.com/apngasm/apngasm A lot of these websites just cobble together a bunch of scripts and utilities that are already available and give you less control over them as opposed to running them on desktop (example: say you want to use pngquant and then OxiPNG to compress your PNGs, most websites deny you access). It's why I want to eventually try APNGs by constructing them from raws on desktop once I figure out the workflow and optimal settings, and why I want more modern formats like JXL supported.
(934.00 B 133x146 light bulb apng.png)

I just thought of something! So the colors have to be very limited, right? And the images have to be small in size so that it's not over 25kb, correct? We also had the Mario Paint thread with the various contributions made that, barring some exceptions, were mostly 256 x 224 px in size >>958116 There's a very nifty idea to make some cool APNG animations out of Mario Paint drawings! Unfortunately, I don't know if the game resolution can go lower than the above size & still look sharp.

It took over a decade for non-Mozilla browsers to add support. Chrome only supported it in 2017 despite the format existing since 2004. This is probably the biggest reason the format never really caught on.

APNG is such a niche format, its usage outside browsers is basically 0. I hope they hurry up on the Firefox jxl rust decoder. With jxl you'll be able to have lossly or lossless animations at even smaller size. >>1031374 >animated AVIF Garbage. It has neither progressive decoding nor video compression, so it's really shit for animations because you can't play them back until everything is loaded.

>>1031642 I actually agree, but until Acid and Codexx change the site's fork to support JPEG-XL or I learn enough webdev to suggest a commit to Aleph Gulag is inexplicably going to try to cockblock it. The cockblock essentially stems from JXL and AVIF being developed by separate Gulag teams and one team getting pissy over JXL being better and shoehorning in AVIF (and I say this as an AV1 proponent). People who don't know what SSIMULCRA2 is are going to go with whatever is pushed onto their shitplates like VP8-derived WebP and soundless 4MB webms, or bitcrushed H.264 videos from Xitter and watermarked verticals from Douyin. Some CDNs, however, are seeing the light and starting to use JXL in their backends, and Gulag released a new encoder for JPEG that derives from JPEG XL (though I suspect it's more to do with trying to muscle it out). I really hope JXL can be implemented in the future.

Continuing to experiment I decided to try one-bit APNGs with the 1st Chaika animation, and it worked so well I tried to apply it to other ones. No such luck, as only a few images can work in pure black and white. Overall, I don't see the point of striving so hard to work within these limits if you have to employ so many workarounds like this is 2012 Tumblr, it defeats the point of APNG being supposedly better than GIF if you have to reduce the color range just like GIF anyways to get the size and video formats can compress to similar sizes without those concessions. There are lossy PNG compression tools I should have tried but I don't have a Wangblows machine on me right now. https://css-ig.net/pingo >>1031717 Hope the limitations are lifted so we can see more fun stuff. JXL automatically addresses such bandwidth concerns.

>>1032782 I don't say this with the vitriol of 31ba7d (insults rarely change minds), but the flooding's a bit much. Someone in >>>/vb/5275 suggested last night to organize these there.
>>1032784 Do you know what flooding is? I'm not the one posting five single file posts in a row each under one minute after the last. I've been making sure not to double post because I didn't want my posts overrunning the thread. Also /vb/ is practically dead compared to /v/. It's just another failed attempt to redirect off-topic posting away from the the most popular places for it, just like the lounge thread in relation to to the GamerGate thread. But sure, I'll dump the rest there all at once since no one cares if I actually flood a dead board. >I don't say this with the vitriol of 31ba7d I sincerely doubt that, considering you're the 4th (1) in a row to join this discussion on that side while not posting any apngs at all. I'm wagering you don't give a shit about my bugs one way or the other, but are trying to playing nice now, even though you still couldn't help but accuse me of flooding, just so you can be rid of me, because you're unreasonably upset that I and one other fag expressed distaste for your post making a mass reply. But this is all just conjecture, and I'll fuck off regardless since the rest of my apngs don't auto-animate.

Something weird's afoot: the bugposter's obviously generated a bunch of (1)s to pile on a buried post of no significance in a big thread. I'll write how further on. >>1032788 By flooding, I mean overwhelming this thread with very similar posts. Single or double file, it's a flood. >/vb/ is practically dead It has almost 6000 posts in a few months. >just so you can be rid of me, I don't "get rid of you" on /vb/, I obviously browse /vb/, or I couldn't have relayed 5879 from /vb/. I didn't even see the quotes post you didn't like when I posted, just 31ba7d from the index, and my post was unrelated to it. I scrolled up to figure out what you're even talking about. I know people project, so your accusation makes it obvious you're the (1) flood in your other argument that 8eb3db mentioned, where you pile on some buried post in a big thread. When 8eb3db figured out your (1) flood, you went to your standard ID to express the same distaste, then 2 other (1)s, 1dfe12 and 51c882 above this post, came after my last post to do the same. So now it's obvious you're 4 (1)s here. I wouldn't even have read up enough to notice this if you hadn't projected. And 3 people, not 4, mentioned your bugflood. Your story's that, since I arrived to a thread only 4 days old, to relay 5879's post, and gently recommend the bugflood to a Bug Fables thread, I'm 4 different people, including one who doesn't exist, awake and online all night and morning only to get you, all because these people, actually 1 person, didn't post images, but 8eb3db posting an image and not being (1) doesn't count, and I went back in time, to before a post that supposedly upset another me who isn't me, to suggest you bugpost in a Bug Fables thread, all to get you out of my sight on a board that's necessarily in my sight for me to relay 5879's post at all. >But this is all just conjecture It's my more plausible conjecture you're involving me in what's not my business, over one gentle post, because you can't accept when people don't think the same as you, rationalizing everyone as the (1) generator that you are.

It doesn't view APNGs, but it may be useful for color reduction: http://www.pictview.com/ The Bubblegum Crisis APNG should hopefully give you some ideas & inspiration. There's another use I can see for APNGs if used well: Creating a little series of frames to put together a recipe, short story, document, etc. as long as not too many colors are used & enough time is given for the viewer to read. Also added the original Sonic Genesis game logo APNG. Sonic threads are now way past cool!
