Haven't seen that many kaiju films other than the originals of Gojira and a couple of other things. What are some must see? Were this decade Godzilla films any good?

Mostly because most people don't understand Godzilla films. They also expected far more actual kaiju on kaiju fights. When really all the movies are about humanity versus Godzilla in a hopeless situation. King of the Monsters is an excellent sequel to the 2014 American Godzilla. It improved on everything people disliked about the first movie. It's also far more of an all out kaiju brawl that ignorant people think all Godzilla is.

The human stories in 99% of Godzilla movies are very forgettable, and frequently have very little to do with Godzilla, which I suppose makes sense since so many Godzilla movies were unrelated movies that Toho just slapped Godzilla into at the last second. For this reason, the best "Godzilla" movies are the ones that straight up don't have Godzilla in them. Plenty of other Toho-universe films that have monsters that appear in later Godzilla movies are better than most actual Godzilla movies, and it's a shame they don't get attention. Atragon I think is based on a novel, which explains why it has a much better story than most. Godzilla movies should try harder to at least have human plots that are more intricately tied to what Godzilla is actually doing. I know it isn't actually what the series is, but it's what the series should be. The best part of the 2014 one was the two seconds when Kick-Ass was actually helping Godzilla fight the bad guys, even if only in a minor way, because at least then I had a reason to care what Kick-Ass was doing. I'm sure there are a couple more movies where the humans are more significant to what Godzilla is doing, but usually it's the opposite, where the humans are fighting some aliens or something, and then Godzilla shows up to fight a kaiju the aliens are controlling, but it's really disconnected otherwise. Final Wars is the best because at least the humans in that are basically the X-Men. It's not like the rest of the Godzilla movies, but at least they're entertaining.

I blame the media perception & horrible english dubs/localizations making the average person view something like Godzilla as lame campy rubber monster fights. There are the ones where Godzilla is more of a villain, and/or the only monster, and those are a bit different, but for the ones where Godzilla is a "good guy," frequently what ends up happening is a human plot that has nothing to do with Godzilla, and then when Godzilla shows up the humans become irrelevant. The best ones are the ones where the humans and Godzilla are actually both working together and doing things that influence the others' fight, not just "humans escape from alien base while Godzilla fights a kaiju," since those two things don't actually affect each other much, even if the kaiju Godzilla is fighting works for the aliens.

How many non Japanese "kaiju" movies have any of you watched and which ones are your favorites?

>>333 The original King Kong is in a league of its own. It's so much better than everything else in the genre that I wonder if it even counts. Son of Kong is also underrated, and benefits immensely from being one of the few kaiju movies ever to actually use recurring characters, so I automatically begin caring about Denham's character and story, which actually goes in a logical direction from the original. It works very well as a double feature with the original. It feels like an organic continuation, even if it isn't quite as good. America basically had its own age of kaiju movies, but they never called them that. But things like Tarantula and Them seem like basically the same thing. Plenty of dinosaur movies going back to the dawn of cinema are basically the same premise. Hell, even a lot of the most famous Godzilla monsters are basically just dinosaurs with nicknames. Rodan is the localization of Radon, and he's just a Pteranodon. Angilas is just an ankylosaurus. So if that's the case, does The Lost World count? It's basically the precursor to King Kong. Hell, does Jurassic Park? Few would argue that The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms doesn't count, and that's just a dinosaur too.

They're basically as realistic as one would expect of a movie from that era, and we are told specifically what kind of real life dinosaurs they are. They just have nicknames because the Japanese can't pronounce their real names easily, or because Toho figured it would be more marketable, or something like that. But if you want a non-pedantic answer, I'd argue Atragon might be my favorite of their Showa era stuff, but I hesitate to even count it, since Manda isn't actually particularly important in it. The movie gets by by having a much better story and much more interesting characters than probably any of the other movies in the Toho Kaiju universe or whatever you would call it. The Mysterians and Battle in Outer Space are pretty cool, too, but not really because of Mogura, because again he feels like an afterthought. The special effects in general are cool in those ones, though.

Well sure, but that's basically the case for dinosaurs in cinema going back to the dawn of film. Few movies actually portrayed them particularly realistically. And even when they do, does that invalidate them? Gorosaurus is literally just the t-rex that King Kong rips the jaw off of. Does he not count? And if he does, then the T-rex from the original King Kong and the 2005 remake must count, right? But the original especially is clearly just intended to be a regular T-Rex. But it serves a very similar role to Kong (albeit a smaller role), and Kong is definitely a kaiju. And if the T-Rex counts, what about the other dinosaurs in the original King Kong? And then what about the dinosaurs in The Lost World? I think a big part of this is just how recent the discovery of dinosaurs, and gorillas for that matter, really is. When these movies were made, they were both recent discoveries, and not a lot was known about either, at least by the general public, hence why Cooper was so enthralled by a movie about a gorilla. They were new and they were cool. Real life gorillas are practically small kaiju. And real life dinosaurs are basically kaiju as well. Film dinosaurs, even if intended as realistic at the time, were portrayed as larger than life, because that's how people saw them, and still see them today. Couple that with how inaccurate our knowledge of them at the time was, and it makes film dinosaurs of the era seem even more monstrous compared to the real things.

Movie is very good. Not one of the Godzilla movies that has something it wants to say. Just a very straight forward heavy weight title fight with a surprised visit from MechaGodzilla. KotM was better but this one was still really entertaining.
