>>976 Yeah, but this thread could've been about Touhou official manga in general so we can discuss Satori manga too. Regarding this chapter, looks like it's really build up to be about youkai gang solving issues related to Geidontei while Reimu intervene here and there, which means we're gonna see more Mamizou, Suika, Aya, and possibly more in the future. I wonder if Komachi is going to be another regular soon.
>>977 Not particularly fond of Cheating Detective Satori, to be honest. The plot moves at a snail's pace, half of the chapters seem like filler material, and while the eyes are amazingly done, everything else isn't overly impressive in terms of artistic quality. I think the series is basically ZUN going back to his fondness for Agatha Christie-style crime novels, except the sheer amount of detail you need to cram into those for a convincing plot would be more suitable for something text-only like Curiosities of Lotus Asia.
>>978 This review is incredibly based and just about matches my opinions on the topic.
>>978 >half of the chapters seem like filler material Isn't that the case for all Touhou manga beside SSiB? At least every chapter in Satori manga so far has always been relevant to the main plot and almost each chapter gives progression whether it's about who's the next suspect or uncovering a little bit about the ghost. It's just that we're probably still nowhere near closure as it keeps jumping around because, well, I assume it's the main plot that's only been few chapters instead of typical filler incidents in other Touhou manga.

Goddamn, i've been seeing komachi everywhere. She's just some minor underling though, what made her so prominent?
(226.12 KB 1000x1435 x21.jpeg)

>>1070 She like to stroll about and even putting himself in other's business just to avoid work. It's also what makes her a readily-available source for anything related to souls and lifespan, compared to Yuyuko. If you notice some of the parties shown in manga, she seems to be one of the shrine regulars. I still love how she had influence in taking down oni Kasen (which only involved 4 people) and had important role in the epilogue.
(938.44 KB 768x1024 ClipboardImage.png)

>>1070 Undoubtedly some underhanded tactics were involved in this slacker's sudden raise to prominence! This calls for an investigation by The Supreme Prosecutor Yamaxanadu!
>>1070 She's the pet girl of Aya Azuma, who (I think) also illustrates Lotus Eaters. Furthermore, her ability to communicate with/control/destroy spirits makes her a good plot device.
>>1074 >who (I think) also illustrates Lotus Eaters. Their artstyle don't look like each other.
>>1078 Right. The illustrator for Lotus Eaters is Mitzutaki. My point of her being a conveniet plot device for communicating with the dead still stands.
>>1081 >My point of her being a convenient plot device for communicating with the dead still stands. Are we forgetting the other reasons why she's popular? Also, other hus can talk to the dead as well you know, like Rin.
(92.36 KB 767x1016 El8yZ_aUcAAFce3.jpeg)

>>1083 Rin is an outcast from underground so I doubt she come to the surface often. Komachi to Rin is like comparing your friendly neighboor to a country hick from another state. Definitely the only time we prominently see Rin is helping her shut-in master solving a case.

>>1111 I too am butthurt about Elizabeth. But mostly because she's a shit tier character from a normalfag spin-off, and daughteru from 2 is better than her in every way save for not having enough screen-time. But mentioning BS made me wonder. If Andrew Ryan's hyper-individualistic ideology began to pass into fantasy as most of it's followers are rotting on the seafloor, what would the implications for Gensokyou be? IRL most political ideologies are very slow to fall into oblivion, hanging around in public consciousness for generations upon generations if not getting rekindled decades down the line. But if a formidably sized society built around a single ideology and completely isolated from the outside world comes to ruin in about a decade with less than ten surviving witnesses worldwide. That's just about as "forgotten" as an ideology can get without being completely erased. I would imagine Rapture would be travelling mach 5 speed on a trajectory towards the Barrier be it in Gensokyou's sphere of influence.
>>1104 >>1105 These kind of people make me upset and I don't want to get upset today
(1.38 MB 1400x840 ClipboardImage.png)

>>1116 Sorry. Have a plush whale.
>>1115 >If Andrew Ryan's hyper-individualistic ideology began to pass into fantasy I don't remember much about Bioshock's lore, wasn't that just Ayn Rand for gamers ? If so then aren't most non-humans with a noticeable level of power already living like that ? The only rules they must follow can be summed up by, don't make world threatening waves and don't create humanitarian or environnmental crises. That's as liberal as you can get in a territory meant to hold gods and oddities. Hell look at what caused the incidents, large scale weather and seismic manipulations, hostile religious takeover, nuclear testing, the incident resolvers attempting robbery on newcomers, large scale necromancy etc...
>>1120 >Ayn Rand for gamers Kind of like that, except he was absolutely turned on individualism. Audio logs reveal that he renounced all and any forms of altruism, equating them to "parasitism", and was planning to build an individualist utopia by completely removing it from society, making the whole education system his propaganda platform, punishing kids for as much as sharing toys, etc, etc. >The only rules... Those are Gensokyou's global rules. Basically don't destroy the place and don't fuck with the local faith supply. Actual sociopolitical system differs from place to place. Tengu-kappa society, for example, is allegedly deeply traditional and has a rigid caste system, much to Hatate's disdain, which is the main reason for her being a such a NEET.
>>1115 >>1121 >If Andrew Ryan's hyper-individualistic ideology began to pass into fantasy as most of it's followers are rotting on the seafloor, what would the implications for Gensokyou be? I don't see it being too big of a deal, an empty city popping out of nowhere and a surge of ANCAP behaviours would just start another treasure race. Make that Phantasmagoria game n°3.
>>1122 Metaphysical concepts tend to turn into palpable embodiment of themselves in Gensokyo, so if a dying ideology was to find it's way there I doubt it would manifest (only) in changes to people's mood. More likely the remnants of Rapture's residents' ideas would gather together and give birth to a new deity that looks like a hatted girl version of Ryan. She'd probably be some weak stuff though, considering how there are six to maybe fifteen people left in the whole world who are even aware of the concepts she's embodying. Also, I for some reason find it funny to imagine the whole city falling out of the sky right into the biggest body of water it could find in Gensokyo, sweeping SDM with a wave of water it displaced as you would expect from a real Touhou manga. Well, anyway. It's not like gaijin shit like that would have a reason to be picked up by Gensokyo. Thus far the only representatives of western mythos to inhabit it are Remilia & co., who traveled there on their own volition. And maybe Marisa's dad. Which raises question of whether there is a Western wonderland in existence somewhere. In SaBND Remilia cheers for uncle Satan to raise his morning star before the dawn-break on new year to curse the world into being reigned by creatures of the night, which confirms that Touhou world has western deities besides Japanese girls wearing engrish t-shirts. Yet we have only one moon, and it is inhabited exclusively by Japanese gods. Maybe western religions always considered Earth to be the center of the universe and Moon to be a simple decoration, so western fantasy creatures never left the earth, but I personally don't buy it. And if there was a western wonderland, then why would SDM bother going all the way to Japan? Maybe they are just weebs, or maybe there is no gaijin Gensokyo and western mythical creatures use different methods to preserve their existence in modern times.
>>1118 Since Miyoi is a house-spirit, does that mean that her appearance is based on the house she. inhabits?
(2.12 MB 1050x2450 ClipboardImage.png)

>>1124 Zashiki-warashi were already introduced in WaHH and have nothing in common with her. I think we have another Kasen-type situation here and she is something else entirely. What other yokai hang around bars and can possess cramped spaces?
(64.35 KB 750x783 Zashiki_warashi.jpg)

>>1123 I'm kinda curious if Hecatia actually a) came from the Greek pantheon for real (probably tired by the rest of her family, and if you give Greek gods/titans a good look, it's fairly obvious why), or whether she b) simply embodies a certain divine concept, and humans merely have used different names for the same gods across varying times and cultures. As for other western myths - we do have the Hobgoblins and the chupacabras living at the SDM. >>1125 To be fair, her powers certainly seem strange for a youkai that basically is meant for domestic duties only. On the other hand, she's clearly linked to Geidontai somehow - considering she supposedly can't leave it unless she possesses Suika's gourd.
>>1124 Yes. Geidontei is whale-themed bar which Miyoi's design clearly took from.
>>1126 >chupacabra Remilia's pet, so counts for SDM crew who willingly went to japan because weebs. >hobgoblins Originally plucked by Yukari from wherever, they neither got sucked in by Gensokyo's powers, nor willingly escaped there to preserve their existence. Also, what is it about japanese treating (hob)goblins and to lesser extent kobolds as if they were their idea? Every second anime, rpg or porn game featuring goblins treats them more like youkai compared to let's say dwarves or gnomes, who have basically the same origin. Not the best example, but what came to mind is how in MGQ out of four loli-bandits Gob is the only one that hails from Yamatai (local japan self-insert), in fact, she specifically left it and went west to see the world. And later she also turns into an oni. I've specifically tried looking up "japanese goblin", assuming that nips are unifying some similar green midget yokai with the original european creature, but all I could find is that tengu are apparently goblins (which is interesting in and of itself).
>>1132 Dunno, might be from an early D&D japanese translation. That and dragon quest are the usual suspects when it comes to weird japanese ideas about western folk tales and creatures.
(1013.46 KB 740x940 ClipboardImage.png)

>>1134 Pretty much this, IIRC. That's also the main reason why Orcs are frequently portrayed as being pig-like in Mongolian horse drawing shows -- they actually looked like pic related in the actual first edition, and that in turn might have been Japan's first broad encounter with these "western" oni.
>>1137 >the actual first edition I could have sworn the pig versions were from the 3rd edition or something.

>Convenient lady in the land of the oni. So, Konngara's windows debut?
Also, didn't expect gourd's sake to be shit. I guess alcohol content is the only measure of quality as far as oni are concerned. And wasn't bug sake advertised to be real good in fairy manga? And also love how Suika explains Miyoi her own plan on page 8.
>>1221 If only. With Kanako and what's almost guaranteed to be Yuugi in the picture, I have a feeling this entire mess with lead up straight to Touhou 17.5. >>1222 Might be that it tastes bad because it has to be watered down so regular human customers don't immediately drop dead from liver failure. But it's equally possible that the sake from her gourd basically is to her what regular old water is to humans - necessary for your survival, but not impressive from a perspective of its taste.
>>1225 She specifically says it's not a real sake because it's just water turned alcohol (or whatever magically-get-drunk liquid) by sake-bug's secretions as opposed to actual spit-fermented rice.

>>1230 >>1241 This is what happens when you cancel the fairy manga.
>>1247 You get pranked? Though, maybe if the two will be out of commission for long enough ZUN will start another fairymanga to fill the void.
>>1220 Now I'm convinced that this manga is just SoL that revolves around alcohol, bar and getting drunk in Gensokyo with maybe a little bit of supranatural stuff slipped in. The whole thing about memory manipulation and Miyoi scheme at the beginning was just an unintentional red herring.
>>1257 I dunno. Could imagine they're going to take it easy for the most part, until you suddenly get a hefty mood shift at the end - just like with Forbidden Scrollery and Wild and Horned Hermit.
>>1264 Doesn't that apply to like, all of Windows Towhow games as well?
>>1276 Sort of, but the slice of life stuff usually starts out far more harmless. Because by the time Reimu can be arsed to take care of an accident, shit usually has hit the fan already.
>>1281 I think Legacy of the Lunatic Kingdom is the outlier of this since it started off pretty wack compared to the rest.
>>1353 LoLK is pretty far out there in general. You've got the threat of Gensokyo being wiped off the map (as in, literally obliterated as opposed to the usual inadvertent threat), Junko quite explicitly announces her intent to kill you (as opposed to happy danmaku games), and Hecatia supposedly is league above everyone else in terms of power. I think part of why Hidden Star in Four Season isn't that popular is because it had a relatively "normal" Touhou plot when compared to the bombastic one from LoLK.
>>1357 I thought HSiFS was actually kind of liked a lot out of most of the hus past 12.
>>1358 Dunno. Okina gets all the popularity as a Stage 6/Extra Stage Boss, and through connection to her, a little also rains down on Satono and Mai. Meanwhile, Eternity, Narumi, and Nemuno have been getting the short end of the stick. Even though Eternity showed up in the manga and Narumi appeared in Curiosities of Lotus Asia.
>>1357 I think the reason HSiFS isn't popular is because it's a worse version of PCB down to the blonde portal-abusing OP extra stage boss with two servants.
>>1371 So WaWB is basically PoFV but with farmgirls? Did ZUN finally run out after making Touhou 15 IN SPACE! and start recycling ideas?
>>1382 To be fair, he's been doing this for 20 years by now. And we're well above a hundred different girls. If there's anything to blame him for, it's that he never bothered to recyle the PC-98 games in a way that would make their plot consistent with the Windows Era.
>>1382 There's no similiarities between PoFV and WBaWC other than visiting Sanzu River at one time. If anything it's more like MoF where you fight a newcomer god arose above different factions whose notable members are shelled sly creature and FAST black birb. Still, animal realm and yakuza plot are fresh concept compared to another moon or season incident, even if the core theme of power struggle IS similiar to MoF-TD era plot.
>>1425 If anything, WBaWC could be likened to LoLK - in the sense that the heroines are goaded into eliminating a threat the manipulators (Lunarians/Animal Yakuza) can't handle themselves. Then again, this also is the case with SA - given that the evil spirits rising from Old Hell were only released thanks to Orin needing someone to punch some sense back into Okuu. Business suit Yachie is stupidly sexy.

(376.81 KB 1536x2048 EpK5198VoAIqnBN.jpeg)

Kanako got vore'd? That's not nice at all. Also, Reimu has canonically terrifying a regular old man in this manga.
>>1981 God fucking dammit, can ZUN decide between villagers living isolated lives in the village, being ignorant and afraid of mysterious creatures all around them and fucking casually going out to buy shit from kappas/fairies at a shrine festival?
>>2008 They are wary of dangerous/nasty youkai but fine with generally-known safe ones like fairies, kappa, tengu, etc. Regardless, they probably still see them as different species (obviously) with various associated behaviour that they rather not have them mix too much with humans and stay on their social boundaries. I mean, I think it's pretty clear from print works like PMiSS and SoPM in villager witnesses section on Akyuu's character database. They are afraid of some youkai but can greet some like the Prismrivers.
>>2009 Aren't shrines supposed to be the top 1 place youkai shouldn't ever be allowed into and shit is bad if they are?
>>2013 Technically yes. Practically, Reimu couldn't keep them away even if she wanted to because she doesn't know her own patron god and the latter is starved of faith. And the Moriya shrine is a special affair because Kanako collects faith from both humans and the mountain youkai - even if her dealings with the youkai are pretty business-like.
>>2013 Doesn't seem to be the case in Touhou but hey, Reimu tamed those youkai and only ever let the human-friendly ones into the shrine grounds, and the humans don't have to worry because they know Reimu will beat the shit out of any youkai who would cause trouble.
>>2015 Their presence itself is supposed to be a sign that the shrine maiden is either completely incompetent or coerces with them and I think villagers have more reason to assume the latter.
>>2068 I don't think you can call it coercing when Reimu (and presumably all of her Hakurei predecessors) are unwitting pawns to Yukari. Her job explicitly is to protect the stability of Gensokyo. That she also protects the humans living inside it solely boils down to them being integral to aforementioned stability. I'd honestly imagine Reimu is slightly awkward around regular humans because she's simply not used to dealing with them outside of her role as a religious symbol.
(48.25 KB 453x508 bakedanuki endgame.jpg)

>>2078 > Her job explicitly is to protect the stability of Gensokyo. That she also protects the humans living inside it solely boils down to them being integral to aforementioned stability. You make her sound like a misanthrope. Might be the other way around and she's doing her best to keep things calm in order to prevent youkai from going globally berserk and turning the human village into KFC. Or taking hold of it and ruling humans directly and overtly.
>>2081 >You make her sound like a misanthrope. Not necessarily. Again, she's an unwitting pawn. Reimu might as well think she's there to protect humans, but ultimately, the Hakurei bloodline is only kept alive in order to maintain the fragile balance required for continued existence of Gensokyo.
>>2083 Not only that, they also do some Border work. And I think you underestimate the girl or overestimate the youkai sage. I need to re-read SSiB someday.
>>2015 >And the Moriya shrine is a special affair because Kanako collects faith from both humans and the mountain youkai - even if her dealings with the youkai are pretty business-like. Didn't Kanako just used the Youkai as some sort of paid thugs to make them appear stronger to their believers? The Wolf Tengus and Crow Tengus like to keep to themselves without filthy humans stepping into their mountain, so they're more than willing to scare off Kanako's believers.
>>2169 How do you even collect faith from a youkai? What would a youkai even pray for? Can a god have it's own god? Couldn't youkai just circlejerk spook each other indefinitely instead of having to farm human village?
>>2169 It was a mutually beneficial affair. She had the Tengu "attack" the rope railway leading up to her shrine (thus increasing the human fear of youkai) while then "chasing them off" (thus increasing the human faith in her). >>2177 Fundamentally, Shinto gods are like an extortion racket. If you don't worship them they get pissy and bad things happen. In a way, you could even say they live of fear just like youkai do because being afraid of what might happen if you displease a god is one of the chief reasons why they're being worshiped in the first place. >She didn't know that among the youkai of Gensokyo, there existed a number of powers. Nevertheless, she collected the faith of the mountain youkai, and attained great divine virtue. (From her MoF omake.txt) So while youkai may lack the honest "fear of god" found in humans, the knowledge that Kanako will scratch their back if they scratch hers seems to suffice when it comes to generating faith. >Can a god have it's own god? Probably? If, again, mostly in reverence to a superior force. >Couldn't youkai just circlejerk spook each other indefinitely instead of having to farm human village? Youkai are explicitly created from *human* fear and superstition. Although they could probably switch to human faith if they wanted to (looking at Shou turning from youkai to avatar)

New Chapter https://dynasty-scans.com/chapters/touhou_drunken_butterfly_flower_lotus_eaters_sobering_ch17 What do you think about Aya and Byakuren this chapter?
(905.19 KB 1113x744 youkai jesus.png)

>>2676 Byakuren did nothing wrong !
>>2676 Wait, so Myouren Temple was secretly a heretical youkai den?
>>2678 I find that difficult to believe. Shou, Ichirin, and Murasa could easily pass off as human, but Kyoko, Nazin, and Nue would stand out as youkai immediately. Rather, I'd expect people trust the youkai will not attack them so long as they're on the grounds of the Myouren temple, much as they don't expect youkai to attack them during the festivals at the Hakurei shrine. So the "secretive" part is just Aya being the usual clickbait whore.
>>2679 Takes a lot of dedication to be a clickbate whore even in your own head. I respect that.
>>2680 Yeah, that's the kind of vibe I've been somewhat getting lately from Aya. She take her particular method of exaggerating news pretty seriously.
By the way, Ayaya's note to self on p10 matches what Byakuren's dream self says in 15.5.
>>2677 >Began to fear death after her brother died, which goes against Buddhist teachings >Feared it so much she became immortal using "black magic" to keep her youth, becoming a magician similar to Patchouli or Alice >Protected Youkai initially to sustain her power rather than actually caring for them >Tries to convert both humans and youkai, despite youkai only able to exist by the fears and desires of humans and themselves, which Buddhism tries to remove >Was sealed away when her secret was found out >Continues to do all of this after being released, taking advantage of the ignorance of the current generation of Gensokyo humans regarding her history >Still acts as a head priest despite breaking many of it's rules still. Given the choice between Buddhism or Shintoism, I'd pick Shintoism, but I respect some of the teachings from Buddhism. I can't say the same for Byakuren. She goes against many of Buddha's teachings, the biggest being her fear of death she still retains. Despite now genuinely caring for the well being of youkai (especially the ones of her temple), she shows no sign of letting go of her magical abilities and immortality, which still relies on the existence of Youkai. Even with her changed attitude to the well being of youkai, she still needs youkai, and her underlings are like a renewable resource for her. It's hard to say if she's recruiting other Youkai out of religious duty or (subconsciously at least) to keep a fuel source for her abilities. She also tries to create harmony between humans and youkai, but the world of Gensokyo could already be considered that with how it works. If anything, her ideal way would end up ruining that balance. Aya is still exaggerating the situation in the current story, but she's not completely wrong about how things are at the temple. As dream Reisen says about her in 15.5, Byakuren's a huge hypocrite. I may be biased on this, as I'm not really a fan of her (and despite Aya's exaggerations, I chuckled at Byakuren's response to her article saying it was her that sent the ghost to try and keep people from drinking).
>>2687 Aside from their rampant complexes dreamworld selves basically just more honest and perceptive, all-around better versions of 2hus. I wonder if dream Koishi is just her conscious mind.
>>2688 What if Koishi actually is her own dreamworld self? From what I gather, dream souls basically are the underlying desires of each character with all form of self-restraint removed from them - so basically someone stripped of Freud's Super-Ego. Koishi sort of fits that role, given that the only remaining part of her is the Id.
>>2687 I'm not sure if it's stated that current Byakuren still fear death and deliberately try to maintain her youth/power and keeping youkai partly for that purpose. The way I see it her immortality and power just stick with her and it's no longer need maintaining as she is in Gensokyo (the reason she need to maintain this power in the past was because she was in outside world at the time and magic/youkai were slowly dying). There is also a possibility that her power is already become kind of a curse that she can't get rid easily, and even if that's not the case, I don't think there is anything wrong with keeping her powers as long she no longer hurt anyone. I mean, looking at some buddhist deity/figures some of them used to be demonic in nature. That being said, I agree that her goal in trying to further "equalize" youkai and human in Gensokyo could be harmful, but same could be said to other religious leaders which has just as much radical views, which you could see as common theme between them. (Miko want humans to rule and Kanako want to industralize Gensokyo). I just assume they know what they are doing, for better or worse.
>>2691 Magic/youkai weren't slowly dying 1200 years ago.
>>2698 Well, more like she feared so but it did end up happen eventually anyway so I guess it's still makes sense that she did what she did, but in Gensokyo she doesn't have to worry about losing her powers. Not that it matters at this point, I believe.

>>3018 Yukari hired an unseen, anothet suima to prank Miyoi just to tell her who the boss Typical. It's amazing but feels kinda weird that she just pulled out a being similiar to Miyoi out of the blue, and with same ability nonetheless.
>>3023 Isn't Miyoi a confirmed not-suima now?
>>3026 Or wait, was it her that vored Kanako with a dream salamander or was it a hangover from Suika sake? Fuck reading manga not in batches.
>>2687 Speaking of Dream Reisen, i'm surprised that her dreamworld self is all her bottled-up emotions blown up to just pure anger towards everybody that stood in her way. I wonder if this is all a result of a coping mechanism she uses when she worked her ass off for Eirin or maybe it's just her fantasy of going postal to everyone.

>>3152 >What surprised me was that the fan translation ceased, when other manga that have fan translations didn't stop due to an official translation (correct me if I'm wrong on this), especially one based on a niche series outside of Japan. It's true. Dungeon Meshi fell victim to the same worse translation when compared to the scanlation version. For example, the official version felt very formal and too business-like when compared to the lax, and comfortable fan translation of the series. Yet, the translations kept on going because it's one of the most popular ones on the site. And honestly, they shouldn't stop because i wouldn't have bought all the books if it weren't for them. Fan translations are akin to those missionaries in uncharted lands, you'd get more people to read (win-win) by sheer exposure and accessibility compared to just stopping when someone decided to license it officially.

I can't believe I thought ch.22 just came out this month even though it was a month ago, but I remember we were just discussing ch.21 back then. I perceived the chapter release 1 month late thanks to shitty official translation fiasco. By the way, the whole heavy rain plot turn out to be coincidence where Reimu get to fool the masses and Aya being bitch again is pretty lackluster even by Touhou manga standard, I feel. There's nothing much to get in the past three months other than....even youkai can get superstitious over natural disaster and the shrine maidens doing their job (though in Reimu's case it's like a scam).
