How should gamers fight problems with modern games? Anonymous 01/16/2025 (Thu) 06:30:01 Id: 30b9b2 No. 1061372 [Reply] [Last]
Greentext at least one problem and find solutions to the problem. 1) Bland "brown and bloom" colors and graphics, uncreative, uninviting, and visually unstimulating, that reduce atmosphere, emotional impact, and uniqueness 2) Crunch culture where employees work long hours under intense pressure to meet deadlines and deliver products, causing burnout and decreased product quaality 3) Degradation of the hobby as gaming became international and developers adapted design to cater to broader demographics 4) Digital rights management that requires online server authentication, or negatively impacts game performance, or limits how you can use the game 5) Diversity, equity, and inclusion biasing hiring processes at the expense of skills which reduces studio performance, competence, and morale 6) Excessive DLC that fragments the gaming experience, locking content behind additional purchases instead of including it in the initial release 7) Exploiting, cheating, and hacking online like aimbots and wallhacks, offline players usually know each other which discouraged local cheating due to social consequences 8) Game-as-a-service models, subscription and cloud services for gaming where you (((own nothing and be happy))) 9) Hyper-realism instead of artistic and aesthetic style, making games look generic as they strive for similar fidelity and lose unique artistic identity 10) Input lag making games feel more unresponsive, particularly in genres like fighting games, first-person shooters, or platformers needing precise movements or combos 11) Kernel-level anticheat that violate privacy and increases the risk malicious actors exploit security vulnerabiltiies to infect gamers with malware 12) Limited physical releases where many modern games are digital-only, and companies assume digital distribution, the PS5 Pro even lacks a disc drive 13) Loading screen saturation that frequently interrupts gameplay, wastes time, and breaks immersion 14) Monetization, microtransactions, loot boxes, and gambling mechanics and how developers design games around compulsive spending of players instead of delivering quality content 15) Movie games requiring significant "Triple A" budgets and minimizing player agency by sidelining gameplay and how they interact with the game world 16) Pay-to-win mechanics that let players gain advantages by purchasing powerful items or upgrades, undermining fair competition

How do we fix the horror genre?
32 posts and 12 images omitted.
>>1107500 Horror is the game dev genre of easy money, since people don't want new experiences. They either want to fuck around with friends, or something short they can watch on youtube.
I've heard loop games like PT are starting to become more popular.

Does anybody else find "meta" horror games, or "meta" horror mods for existing games, really stupid conceptually? These games are generally built around the vague idea that the game is self-aware, or something in the game is self-aware and trying to create some kind of dialogue/interaction between it and (You), the player, and that the game is glitching out/not working as "intended" as if the game in question was somehow supposed to not be a horror game but your download is special for some reason. The entire fucking purpose and point of these games/mods is completely nullified by the fact that I willingly purchased this game off of Steam/downloaded this mod off of wherever, which was advertised on its page as a horror game with the very same features happening in my game, and these features are happening to everybody else who bought and downloaded it. This kind of horror is only practical if you don't advertise your game as a horror game, but at that point most storefronts and modpages will not actually allow your game to be uploaded under the pretense of it being falsely advertised.

If you want a great VR experience, play Outer Wilds. Its VR is provided through a high-quality mod that is easy to install. Outer Wilds is one of the best games ever made. Its DLC elevates it even further. I highly recommend just going into the game blind. One suggestion though: maybe do the tutorial outside of VR first. I say this only because the tutorial shows you an essential mechanic that a friend missed due to the means of interaction being different in VR.

>>1153623 >its like an inbetween of Visual Novels and their natural evolution, the missing link between them and... i don't know, maybe something generated by AI on the spot but that's not dogshit? It's the equivalent of a black isle styled rpg (fallout 1&2, planscape torment, arcanum etc), with the combat stripped out of it, and really focused on the non-combat skill checks. Not implying it's a bad thing. Honestly I'm just surprised that it hasn't happened more, it would make VNs be more of an rpg than jrpgs. >>1153809 I agree with you but that ship has already sailed in japan over 2 decades ago.
>>1156596 Except Evrart and his brother genuinely are trying to make things better, just in the scummiest and worst-looking way possible. Conversely Joyce is a very charismatic and empathetic character, yet she doesn't do anything to change the world for the better even once until the very end of the game, when it's implied she goes back to fight the board on just sending more armed mercenaries because she now values Martinaise over her job and position. She's hopeless and feels like she can't do anything even as a board member of the largest shipping ompany on Earth, while Evrart and Edgar start from the bottom and do anything it takes, no matter how slimy, to make their home town better, and fuck everybody else.

2d animated games Anonymous 03/07/2025 (Fri) 19:28:42 Id: 7c8eab No. 1078025 [Reply] [Last]
No pixel art. I am sick of it. I want 2d animation but the only people that do that are vanillaware, ubisoft and the occasional indie. Why aren't big companies making 2d games anymore? Don't even try to tell me that is is to expensive. Studios are wasting 200 million and more per game nowadays. They can afford 2d animation. I also hate that out of all the big companies the only one doing 2d is fucking Ubisoft. The company that I hate the most. Vanillaware is only AA at most and they are pretty much carrying 2d animation in gaming. Apparently George Kamitani was quite disappointed how the industry super focused on 3d. He therefore started focusing on 2d games, something about wanting to see how the industry would be like had we evolved from pixels to handdrawn instead of 3d. I want to see that as well. Hollow knight is another good one, and its indie as well. Has a very adorable artstyle and is one of few metroidvanias that isn't fucking pixels. Cuphead is/was an indie game that also has great animation. The artstyle is very unique as well. Never played it myself though, no reason in particular. I wish I had more examples but I already posted the UC examples in the thread about it and I can't find the gif of rayman blowing a fairys skirt up. Whatever opinion you might have on any of the games mentioned most of them were successes. UC sold a million, The rayman games sold great (I think?), Cuphead and hollow knight are selling fantastically. Clearly there is a demand for it and yet so little supply.

>>1078036 Is Metal Slug really pixel art? Like, the actual sprites looked fine on actual low res CRTs aren't you basically asking for high res 2D spriteS? Like from Blazblue
>>1175342 Yes. NeoGeo games all use 24 bit sprites. Slightly more good looking than 16 bit games, but it is still technically pixelshit.

Mechanics that turn you off games Anonymous 03/10/2025 (Mon) 01:32:49 Id: f77b31 No. 1078466 [Reply] [Last]
>Was going to buy Rise of the Ronin >Turns out it has color coded gear just like Nioh, the reason I dropped that game and never played the sequel I absolutely hate this garbage and I fucking hate Blizzard for making this lazy awful shit popular. What I love the most about this color coded RNG bullshit is the fact that not only are you getting the same weapon with different stats, which just waters down the weapon, instead of adding actual variety like a different weapon model with the same moveset, is the fact that you constantly get lower tier colored weapons that have higher DPS than top tier colored ones. Not even a skin to differentiate these weapons as well, absolutely immersion breaking and lazy to the very core.

I can't stand playing games with "player engagement" mechanics. >daily quests >limited "stamina" >rotating pay shops >FOMO gameplay events I can't be fucked. That shit is faggy as hell. I want to play a game, not play a lifestyle choice. Any time I load a game up and it shows me something I want and then shows me a list of dailies I have to farm for months, I drop it on the spot.
Not really a mechanic, but I hate isometric games. Why does everything have to be diagonal. It's annoying to look at this.
>>1078466 It's quite sad because the first Diablo did items like that right and then never again. Every single new implementation of this system in games these days means chests will drop 5 different items, bosses will drop 10, you'll have to sit your ass and manage all that shit either selling, reforging, smelting, whatever the fuck they want you to do busywork for rather than making equipment drops feel like an ACTUAL reward.

Can we have a Stalker thread? I've recently tried out what all the fuss around GAMMA is about and I must say it's quite a fun experience For people who don't know, it's a customizable modpack for Anomaly (a freeplay mod consiting all areas of the first 2 stalker games) and comes with its own updater and Mod organizer 2 config. You need the GAMMA launcher fiels wich can be downloaded from theri shitcord, but if you are a boomer like me who doesn't want to make an aacount you can just download this somewhat older build off mediafire and it will update itself upon lauch to the newest version. https://www.mediafire.com/folder/agyul0e6fbban/STALKER_GAMMA Then you need Anomaly itself which can be downlaoded here: https://www.moddb.com/mods/stalker-anomaly/downloads Unpack both into their seperate folders and then point the MO2 from the gamma folder towards the Anomaly folder and from there it will be basically autopilot. I enjoyed the A-life in this and how the best parts of the original trilogy are expanded upon, specifically the hobo phase. Weapon and armor upgrades feel siginifcant but you can even start out with some decent gear since you get a few points to spend on a new game. I'd recommend tweaking the MCM settings to your liking though, stuff like dropped ammo amount and gear condition based on rank for example. I also didn't like the brown and colorless look of the default install, reinstalling the grass and weater mods gives several options like spring, summer, autumn, winter etc.

>>1147974 I am, it's alright. Having to micromanage my inventory a lot less than Anomaly is a big plus, but like >>1148214 said I'm not a fan of the sleeping mechanic - or at least the decay rates, I can't even get a couple hours into the day without my character needing energy drinks like he's going through withdrawal. Anyone happen to know the values for vigor decay anyway? I tried sifting through the script files but I'm not deep enough into modding to know what to look for. Noticed a weird oddity where loading a save has a chance of spawning a fuckton of mutants on your position for some retarded reason, if I'm reloading a save to try and get an artefact unstuck the last think I want is for 4 bloodsuckers and 8 cats to appear out of thin fucking air - at least in Anomaly the bloodsucker fuckers had the decency of dying in one or two buckshot shells rather than tank 3 of them and run circles around me. Also NPCs are more retarded than even the original trilogy and will frequently throw grenades at themselves. All in all it's not bad, feels like a cross between CoC and Anomaly without going too far into inventoryautism, but personally it's not quite there as my go-to 'sandbox Zone' experience
>>1176487 That sounds pretty rough, in GAMMA sleep is not an issue. You won't get to the first stage of sleepiness until like 22:00 considering you got up at 8:00 and even if you do from taking too much medicine/food you can just take some caffeine tablets.

I fell for the meme and thought they just made movie games but after bingeing their catalog I think they might make some of the best third person shooters around. Amazingly paced with great arena and encounter design, especially in Uncharted where the scavenging around for different weapons was a big focus. If anything I got kinda sad after exhausting all the content in their games cause nothing else really scratches the same itch at all.
